  • My great grand Father is at the right of her Majesty at 41:48. It was the jubilee of the tsar’s personal convoy. Lt. General Sergei Nikolaevich Fleischer , Ataman of the Tereck Cossacks , the other Chief at his left was the Ataman of the Kuban Cossacks. Great work. Very touching for me to see this.

  • VERY interesting, and I am only a couple of minutes into the lecture. If I understand it correctly, KOSSACK derives from a term that would be translated into AMERICAN English with the word "DRIFTER" or "FRONTIERSMAN." Am I on the right track here?

  • Once again I would like to thank the Russian History Museum for another great lecture. I am of Jewish Eastern European ancestry and the closest personal anecdote I have of the Cossacks is my grandma, who came from Western Ukraine, telling me how a Cossack chased her into the barn. Professor Boeck, I would appreciate your comment on the following: During the Russian Civil War, as I have read, the the Cossacks were less concerned with the national fate as they were more focused on their personal Cossack turf. In addition, they plundered so much they held up the rest of the troops. They also killed a lot of Jews. How devoted were they to Russia as a nation? Why did they hate Jews so much?

    • My assumption is that Jews were considered well off in Russian society at the time so it made sense to pillage people with wealth (who happened to be Jews) rather than your average serf, who had nothing of value. Other theory is that many of the proponents of communisms and Bolshevism were of Jewish heritage (Lenin, Trotsky etc). Likely generalisations were made about Jews being a threat to the Russian state.

      @publicenemy1212@publicenemy12122 жыл бұрын
    • @@publicenemy1212 Lenin was not Jewish. Although there were a number of Jews among the Bolsheviks, very few were and were not a threat to anyone. Most Jews were not people of wealth.

    • @@eleanorkett1129 Lenin was 1/2 Jewish (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Lenin#Childhood:_1870%E2%80%931887). His father was a convert to Christianity. Regardless, it seems like Jews have been the scapegoat for societal issues in alot of civilizations across time. Maybe it's because it is a unique identity group, being both religiously and racially defined? Or maybe it stems from the ways that Jews have integrated into society, due to the fact that they were frequently barred from traditional trade guilds?

    • @@manondanon4860 Lenin’s father was a Russian descendent of peasant stock, who worked his way up in life. His maternal grandfather was the convert. Society always scapegoats regardless of the reason.

    • No thanks. We don’t have, or need a State religion in the US. We welcome all religions, or none if you choose. This is why the U.S. has been the light of the world for over 200 years and Russia is, well we can all see what Russia is. Which is a shame because Americans love and respect the Russian people. We just wish they would rise up and get rid of these petty dictators they keep getting stuck with.
