Nearly one thousand Family Dollars across the country are closing up shop.
On March 13, parent company, Dollar Tree, announced in a press release it plans to shutter nearly 1,000 Family Dollar stores after seeing declining sales in 2023. According to the report, that includes roughly 600 locations that will close by June. After that, about 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores will follow suit once each lease term finishes.

  • I am the manager of a dollar store in Canada. The cost price that WE pay has increased, so that means we have to sometimes increase our price to make the same profit. So if we got in let's say a hair scrunchie, we would sell it for $2 and the cost price was .45. That same scrunchie is now .65 cost price, so to make the same profit we have to increase our price to the customer. It's the same story everywhere. The shipping costs are more, the gas prices are more now we have a carbon tax on top of our 13% tax. It all adds up, and no one is ever getting ahead. No company wants to see their profits decrease. Whether it's a multi billion dollar company like Walmart, or a little independant dollar store like mine. It's sad how greedy the world is or has become.

It irritates me that the employees don’t or can’t do anything so therefore we pay the cost or reason for store closing, even goodwill out here are selling donated items like they’re new😤

If we weren't needed on register, we would merchandise (which I always preferred 😉). Of course things are going to be messy and slow when there's only two people working! Theoretically that salary money is going towards keeping prices low - there has been inflation since 1998 - but we know how that goes...

But they are rebuilding more Dollar Trees in different locations.....the ones they are closing are the ones in "dangerous" areas as they have had 4 manager shootings in some of these areas. Real Americans are not voting Democrat enough to make a difference, therefore that is the only way that Democrats can stay in power, and believe me, the Dems definitely want to stay in power indefinitely. The non-Americans who see through the crap and corruption are consider sell outs and Uncle Toms, but our country is still worth saving, the U.S. is the last good empire on Earth and beacon of real freedom left.

They say dollar stores are one of the reasons there are so many food deserts. I know there are 4 Dollar Generals within a 5 mile radius where I live. Another reason why groceries are so high is there are only like 5 or 6 companies that control the food chain. That should have never been allowed IMHO.

    @OrganizeCreateDecorate@OrganizeCreateDecorateАй бұрын
    • They tried to do a hostile takeover of Dollar General, but Dollar General was able to fight Dollar Tree off. DT lost millions in the fight. Then, instead of recouping their losses, they made the incredibly foolish decision to purchase the Family Dollar chain, which at the time was failing. Their plan was to keep Dollar Tree more or less at the same price point and sell the more expensive stuff at Family Dollar, however they were not able to turn the decline of Family Dollar around and have been closing off stores pretty much from the moment they bought the company. With the creation of Dollar Tree plus there is no need to keep Family Dollar going and this is why they are phasing out the remaining stores. In my opinion Dollar Tree will not remain open much longer, I give it 5 years or less. Their price increase and their broken promises of better " bargains, have alienated a good section of their customer base. The fact that their products can be bought somewhere else for less is nother factor contributing to their downfall. Dolla Tree has not been able or willing to capitalize on the free advertising provided by countless KZheadrs using their products. They also have not made any improvements on their mail order policies and practices, such as forcing people to buy cases of products when they only need one or just a few pieces; other questionable practices I observed in ldr canceling orders without telling the customers; delivering the wrong product; delivering broken products and making it impossible to return. And on top of all that they also have dirty and unkempt stores, revolting bathrooms and rude employees.

They don't stand a chance against big name box stores. As soon as one pops up in a smaller area, family dollar is out of business anyhow

And then walking thru Walmart, I notice that maybe I had forgotten things on my list, so I buy more. At least at the dt if I forget something, they'll most likely have it, and I won't break the bank. My solution to this was on days that I do my shopping, I'll go to dt first and get as many things on my list. Then, I'll go to aldi to get things the dt didn't have, and then my last stop is at Walmart. I do it that way bc if I find it first cheaper, I'll go w that option instead. Where as if I go to Walmart first, I'll just end up buying it there. I hope I'm making sense, lol. But, it has helped.

Plus, very high prices to deliver to your home. If they would add more to the online store. I would be really happy and buy more. It so helps for disabled people like me. By the way great video!

  • The Family Dollars are closing as well because they are in high theft areas. When you are soft on crime, that is what happens. Many Walmarts and Walgreens have also done the same thing. If you can't make a profit because of smash and grabs and continual theft, you will eventually close your stores in those areas.

    • That’s most jobs in the U.S. Their pay certainly does NOT keep up or equal to inflation n cost of living. And by the time they do give a cost of living raise it’s a joke cuz the inflation n prices are SO much higher it doesn’t begin to do any good. Very sad the pay doesn’t equal the cost to live. No matter how many jobs you’ve got or incomes coming in to one home. I’ve found that to not be flat broke n be able to afford all the bills (we’re talking basic necessities) it takes at least 3 incomes three days. Utterly ridiculous!

  • Having experience in financial management planning, I am hoping that once they close these less than profitable Dollar Tree stores, they use what they were sinking expenses into there and invest now and focus on their other stores. They definitely need better management of the stores, that is a huge problem of their downfall. It is so evident when you walk into certain stores. Some stores are so understocked and dirty opposed to others. Also, a reflection that there is a slack on regional managers for consequence on this to check on follow up to shape up these mismanaged store. I support and love Dollar Tree and have been a long time shopper. I feel a lot of there products are unique and even better than items you can’t find in big box stores, and not just because they are a $1.25. The now current problem all comes down to poor management.. hence why prices are increasing.. and unfortunately, hate to be the bearer of bad news..they will continue to slowly increase at this rate for they can’t increase at such a huge jump for there would be a huge outburst and no one would shop there and they would shut down over night .. stop and think about it.... stores will continue to slowly close.. it’s just a pattern of slow financial instability..unfortunately, they have buried themselves when they bought out their sister store.. not a good business plan for they in their self already were THE TOP DOG.. once again Wal-Mart will prove they will be everyone’s one stop shop! … as Bethany has shown us, right now across the board.. all 3 stores all is basically the same.. you are really not saving anything, so people will probably choose Walmart only because at Walmart.. it is a one stop shop.. you can buy EVERYTHING and ANYTHING on your list there.. so why go to 2 or 3 stores if you can go to one.. especially if you need a ride.. there will be a lot of different opinions and some loyal customers, yet as in any situation, will it be enough to save our Dollar Tree 🌲??? I’m hoping so!! … just stock up while you can on your favorite deals…and hopefully they won’t be a thing of the past! Thanks for your lesson and shopping Bethany!! and your passion about Dollar Tree….and thanks to anyone who is reading my long comment on the topic 😊

It's a brand new building just setting in our view of the sunset now. It is truly sad for all the workers that are going to be losing their jobs. Some of them are probably single parents, struggling and there are some that are married and struggling as well. My heart goes out to all of them. It's so sad. Thanks for what you found. It seems to me with their higher price points they will eventually lose enough customers that they will have to close more and more stores.

One really has to watch the sizes at the dollar stores though, quite often they are smaller (Even the brand names) than at other stores. I was glad to see Bethany included that fact. It also has to do with weather here as well. If it is -50° and if I am already at a store, I am not likely to want to have to drive to yet another store, park and walk. I'll pay the extra loonie or toonie to just get home quicker!!

    • -50 degrees!? That could definitely have something to do with the high prices in your area😮😊.. but I'll trade you your $4 rice for my $900 a month health insurance coverage fee and that doesn't count the $25 for each doctor visit $50 if it's a specialist, 500 just to get into the emergency room, and each different medication has a different co-payment it can be from $0 to a couple hundred dollars so. I hate to say it but the older I get the more I want to move to Canada. However I'm in Miami sweating my tushy off

    • @bonnieg3403 Yes Dollarama sure had upped their prices haven't they? You really have to be careful to check their shelf tags these days. Our Dollar Tree was $1.25 right from the time they opened here in Saskatchewan, and that hasn't changed so far.

      @dellahicks7231@dellahicks7231Ай бұрын
    • @Dani-ICU-RN Yes, we can experience -50° for weeks on end from December to February here in my province. We have snow by Hall🎃ween that stays, we parents are proud we can maneuver Halloween costumes around snowsuits! 😃 I can not imagine paying that much for healthcare. My husband retired almost a year ago from a union job that had an excellent health plan, we were given the option of taking over the premiums at $235/month, so we did. Between our government coverage and the healthcare plan, we rarely, if ever, pay for our prescriptions. We never enter or leave a doctor's office nor ER owing anything. There are some items. For example, I needed an arm sling a couple of years ago, and I was charged $20 by the hospital. I could have submitted that though through our extended plan for reimbursement. My husband and I were hit head-on by an impaired driver 40 years ago, his leg was amputated as a result, so he has gone through numerous legs in those years, and we pay nothing for them. The foot he currently has would be approx $5000 to purchase if there wasn't coverage by our government. He has a friend with the same amputation in California that needed a new leg desperately. They wanted to charge him in the area of $20,000 for it. He & his wife couldn't afford it. He was at risk of losing his job and was becoming depressed. My husband sent him a bunch of pieces & parts he didn't need, (And the facility that makes his legs cannot take back), so the American friend was able to craft together a leg, and get back to work! We do pay for our healthcare via our taxes, but what I tell people is that when I was taken by ambulance to the ER last November as a reaction to a medication, the last thing I would have wanted hanging over my head, was a bill I couldn't afford! When people are at their most vulnerable, they are having to worry about paying for the emergency surgery they just had, or the Blessing of a baby is followed by a nice bill. We have plenty of room up in my province Dani, you would love it! We have three large cities, the biggest is 300,000, it's approx 90 miles away, our son lives there. The next largest is 250,000, that is the capital, then my city of 36,000. We have a population in our province of 1.25 million, spread out over 251,000 Sq miles, so lots of room to live large as they say!! Lots of blue skies, beautiful northern lights, and 94,000 lakes to choose from, in case you miss water ... mind you it does freeze at -50°, then you go ice fishing! ❄️ 🐟

    • One of their warehouses had a huge rodent infestation and was in deplorable condition that affected food stock. Apparently they didn’t do anything to remedy it and so they got nailed during a government inspection. All because of laziness and corporate greed. I think one reason sales are down because their stores stay a perpetual state of a mess (which could be overlooked by the $1 prices), the lack of unique diverse inventory that they used to have (they promised more of with the price raise but failed to deliver), and the price increases have put many off, including my self. I used to go in and easily drop $100 every couple of weeks. Now I go months without shopping there and if I do, I may spend $50-$60, tops.

As you know, in 🇨🇦 we have been paying $1.50 for some time now and even with some prices increasing to$1.75 -$2.00, I am baffled that you are actually paying more than us for items! What's more surprising is that our Dollarama ($1-$5) is actually carrying makeup and other items that our 🇨🇦DT's have never gotten nor will they. Even items are coming from Hobby Lobby which we don't have in 🇨🇦🤔 Love your vids and energy ❤️👍💕

That said, the thin mint cookie dupes are freaking AWESOME and taste better than Krogs equivalent and are much cheaper than buying Girl Scout. I also get starkist salmon packets which are same or cheaper than Krogs. And then of course I have my crafting list which I always hope I can fill at least 3/4 of the items but that’s definitely hit or miss. 😉🤨

    • @@charmaineskaggs9193 yeah this used to be a super safe area just 5 yrs ago but then they built all these high priced subdivisions, which btw are built on swamp lands, and the crime rate spiked. These subdivisions are $350k ranged homes... But it seems like they advertised them at the county jail, because ever since they were built, we've had an officer murdered on his way home from picking up dinner for his family, stores closing due to constant shoplifting, assaults, car thefts, burglaries, etc... This used to be one of the higher class communities not very long ago and now it's to the point I don't let my mother go shopping alone and when I take her I wear her purse so they don't think she's an easy target and hurt her trying to take it. The saddest part is most of them are teens. 😧 A few years back our teens were preppy Sperry wearing kids that worked hard to get college credits at the prestigious high schools. The teens now are constantly being recorded having jail house riots at the schools.
