Want: write an interesting story Need: stop procrastination
up next: How to write a good meta screenplay
Want: write a beautiful story Need: somehow shoot it, but it is not clear how
The truth has been spoken
Sleep. Stop lookin at porn and shit. Eat better. Go for a jog every once in a while. Achieve mental clarity.
same!
The lie the character tells themselves. The more I learn about writing, the more I learn about life in general.

Well stories are based on the real life

How is it a lie though?
I find a lot of novice writers just dive head first into writing without knowing these simple basics. Even if you've been writing for a while, it's always beneficial to revisit these to make sure the core of your story is strong.
Completely agree!
Have we met? lol, a few years ago i started writing a story, i just let it flew for a couple dozen pages before i realize i had no idea where i was going with my plot and main characters, just writing scenes that followed each other quite logically but with no global plan for it. This was really bad cause i had no notion of strucure what so ever, this channel will help a lot! And it's also useful for non-writers out there to have better understanding of movies and stories!Thank you Tyler for this clear and quality content, you just got a suscriber!
Glad finally someone said this. I am learning to write a screenplay. Got this bug only 6 months ago. Till now I didn't pen a single line on paper wrt story. Last 6 months has been a great research and I discovered so many techniques ,information and tools that are needed to write a great story. This also includes music, sound, Lighting etc.. I think many people are writing stories as they write a love letter for their young girl friend in school lollllllllllllllllllllllll .. Realize that Screenwriting is a game on the minds of audience not about your taste. Its not what you know its about what audience know.
When he said, "whether you want to write a detailed outline, or immediately sit down and start writing" he was talking about the difference between outliners & pantsers. He wasn't referring to the novice writer, that do not know what they are doing. That would make no sense.
I am that type of guy, until now, i have written so many things, and deleted all of them before even finishing it
"Your character spends most of the story pursuing their outer goal; The Thing they Want. But what the story is really about, on a deeper level, is their growth into a place where they (first subconsciously, then consciously) recognize and pursue their inner goal; The Thing they Need." -K.M. Weiland
LET'S GO. Building a story at the moment with an anti-hero - this is perfect.
Awesome! Next week Part Two should be out, which should help even more!
Are you done now? Will we be able to read it now?
im still confused with the definition of anti hero
@@khs_fan it's the fella who's got some twisted morals, but is the good guy in a story
@@khs_fan maybe anti hero is a character who wants something like hero does, like saving the world or bring peace to the world, BUT the way they do to achieve that goal is bad and horrible like murdering innocent people or something...
understanding the dark side of your 09:53 audience will make your character 09:54 stronger empathy is all about 09:57 understanding why characters do what 09:59 they do and getting an audience to stay 10:01 engaged even if they don't agree with 10:03 every decision the character makes
THANK YOU
Are any of y'all here writers too? I'm new and I don't know how to start :(
That's okay! One place to start may be the Facebook group! There's a lot of encouraging, helpful writers in there willing to help you get started and read your work when you're ready for that!
Just start writing! I’m new to writing & have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m having fun!
Watch Stephen King
I’m about half way through a novel and have hit a bit of a writers block. I’m now revising my technique to find a new direction.
don’t know if you’ll see this or not, but i had no idea how to start my story-so i skipped the first chapter. i went to the part i knew how to write then went back once i finished my book and wrote it in
Best tip for creating a character: Don’t follow anything, day dream and imagine different scenes and characters until you have one that YOU love. If its new to you its new. Follow your intuition for the character despite what others think. If you love the character then the writing for that character will be good!
Gingamin Productions whoa, never saw it that way. Thanks.
I always find inspiration from films etc, i should be more creative
this is an old comment but I just want to say that I daydream a lot about my stories and frequently do things that you have said. The characters are already fleshed out and have their own identity, so much so that sometimes I forget that I created them and I cherish them to bits. That being said videos like this are still helpful for me and other people who have a hard time organizing or structuring their characters and stories in their writing. For me imagining a new scene feels exciting and fun but laying them out like this in a more structured manner helps a ton in navigating the world I created, otherwise I would get nothing done! Anyway, that's just my two cents. I do agree though that amateur writers should not get caught up following strict 'imaginary' guidelines but rather utilize these types of tools as an assistance to their world and character building.
Dude, you've been killing it recently. These videos really do educate.
Thanks! Good to hear that they've been helpful
I was always confused by the WANTs and NEEDs of a character. This helped me so much! Thank you! Can't wait for part 2
Glad it was helpful!
From a psychological perspective a want derives from a need. Kinda like you _need_ food in order to survive, but maybe you _want_ to eat a specific meal like pizza.
I have found that creating an engaging character that resonates with the audience through want and need is to reveal their WOUND. In 'Finding Nemo" who doesn't identify with Marlin or with Carl in 'Up', immediately? My favourite wounded hero is Montgomery Clift in., 'A Place in the sun.' I really enjoy your insights and downloads, Tyler. You have a subscriber.
You're right for the most part, but having a wound won't always keep the audience engaged. The worst example of a wound not being done right is the orphan villain; a one-dimensional villain that does terrible things for terrible reasons and given one scene of exposition that goes "wah I had a bad childhood" TL;DR I agree with you, with a few extra
Isn't this the same thing or at least directly related to their lie?
My favorite is Zuko from Avatar the last airbender. But they reveled what happenned to him slowly. As soon as you see him, you see his scar and you know he was vanished. But you never know why and the fact that he is got little moments when he seems pretty decent keeps you wondering "what could he have done that was so bad". Until is finally revelled in eposode 12, but he is not the one that explains it. He never talks about it or give excuses. He is blindly driven by his "want" and keep doing bad things because of it. But you also see him doing good things so you know he is a very conflicted character. As the show advance you just want to see more of him and can't help cheering for him even if he is the antagonist.
They don’t have to be relatable though
The simple distinction made between "Likeable" and "Engaging" was worth the price of admission alone. Thanks for such a measured analysis of the subject!
Tyler - Not only is the content excellent, your presentation of information (called instructional design) is bar none the best I've seen in the industry. Your style of teaching is on point.
Thanks for the kind words!
One of the main reasons we 'like' the Joker, is because his pro-activity within the plot
the joker is a plot driven character he doesn't change but changes the world around him he just moves along with it without any change in his core
I’ve gained so much from this, thank you. I’m writing a graphic novel and this translated perfectly.
I've started writing something not a screenplay but I was intended that way, later I decided to turn it to a novel and after a while, even I know the outline and story, I somehow stuck in a place without knowing what was the problem. Now I have to sit down and write every character's desires and needs. They will act on these eventually, so the story will continue. Thanks so much!
love this so much. great job
After watching this I found many faults and things that were missing in my characters. My characters are somewhat surface level with nothing really intriguing about them. Thanks for the advice!
This helped me a lot to broaden my spectrum when it comes to character development. It also helped me compare one of my favorite characters to these tips and tricks. Thank you for this, it is much appreciated!
SO grateful this ended up in my suggested. Despite the fact that I have no interest in releasing any books or anything written at all, writing is probably my greatest passion, and I swear, your channel is correcting my mistakes one by one. I'm already learning so much from you, and I have a feeling finding your channel just leveled up my writing skill. Thank you SO much.
Just watched both videos. This channel is extremely underrated. This really helped me develope my current D&D character and understand exactly what my character is.
This reminds me of the video "Writing Strong Characters" by Think Story. I like how y'all both describe the want and need. Very helpful!
Dude, your channel is amazing. I've learned so much about building my story, planning it, writing it, and creating compelling characters. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
I have watched this video three times and come out learning something new each time! I wish I had seen this when I first started writing 13 years ago. This is a great beginner video to writing character. It should be shown to every English teachers’ student. Well done Tyler. 👏
I highly recommend the Screenwriting book "Inside the Power of the Transformation Arc Story" by Dara Marks. I wish luck.
You helped me muster up a great character for a screenplay 5 years in the making. Thank you.
Hoping to be an executive coach I got an accreditation for myself. This is the first time I am able to appreciate the distinction between personality and character. You have done well by illustrating each building block with examples from movie characters. That helps immensely. When I introspect on the clients I engaged with in the past , I am able to realise the aspects I had overlooked like their false beliefs, endearing traits, towering strengths and fatal flaws. Hoping to look at part 2. Thank you very much.
I have learnt some of this by writing characters before but I have reached some points in writing a story with sitcom-like characters (heavy focus on characters) where I don't exactly know how the characters will behave. This video really learnt me to focus on some essentials to the characters I was missing or had forgotten. Thank you
thank you so much!! This helped me out a lot while writing my 2nd story :D Instead of internally cringing, I'm actually happy with the progress!!
Now I feel a little more comfortable with my characters. Can't wait for part 2
Glad it was helpful!
Well done, Tyler! This was extremely helpful for my current film analysis. I was trying to figure out why a protagonist wasn't resonating and I think it's because the screenwriters didn't give them a "need" lol
Thank you so much man everything is so much easier to understand as far as creating good characters for film in which for a long time I’ve struggled to figure out why my scripts/stories weren’t working as a whole but now I understand. Thank you so much really🙌🏽
Thank you, something felt missing from my character but this should help. I’ll use this advice to add layers to my characters.
This is literally the best writing video I have ever watched. It really helped me upgrade my storytelling
I’ve been having Gr8 concepts and ideas for a screenplay, but have no idea on how to get started. I have dreams and when I dream it comes out perfect, then I wake up and try to begin to write it and that is when I get stuck. Nothing comes out! This video has given me some kind of clue of how to look at the vision. Thank you so much!!
Congratulations, very well explained. Looking forward to the 2nd part.
Thank you so much for breaking this down this way it was so simple to clearly understand
Lemme just say that your channel is one I have needed for a long time but have only found just now. Awesome content man!
I was looking for information about acting characters and this video expended my mind to how writing can be marvelous!
Great stuff man. Keep it up. Really enjoy your videos and the knowledge that comes with it.
Tyler, this is really intelligent theory you got going on here. Until I saw this video, I couldn't understand how to write interesting characters. Now, I have some framework to build around.
You honestly deserve more subscribers, these videos are so well made!
Amazing video! Thanks for the amazing content 😱 I don’t even write but I love analyzing characters, this gives much more perspective 👏
Great! I feel grateful to have found someone with such a good understanding of the subject matter and a true intention of spreading the knowledge! When's the second part coming??.!!
Hopefully Thursday!
Want: For my movie to be a masterpiece in the future Need: Get the hell to work In all honesty though, great video. ;)

This is really helpful specially right know i'm a film college student right know. it makes me more understanding about how to make a characters in story.
Hey Tyler I'm loving the videos so far - really helpful, can you do a video based on created a "Villain" that works with the screenplay structure you've done videos on? That would be awesome!
I'm struggling with the first draft of a shorfilm and this has been VERY useful. Can't wait to see the second part!
Glad it was helpful!
I love how your profile picture is the eye image after the Star Gate Sequence in 2001.

Great movies great character's Great plots Thank you for sharing
So since the bug started, I took the opportunity to take a crack at writing that story I'm mulling over for quite a while now. I go back to this series every now and then for guidance. Absolutely helpful together with the eBook I bought at Tyler's website
Your channel is soooo helpful. Thank you.
This is a great synopsis about the core principles that make up for great characters. I like it how you also explains the interrelationships between the Want, Need, and the Lie, and not only approaches them in the big picture (the whole story) but on a scene level as well.
That's all you need to create a character , thank u Tyler!!
You're welcome!
This was great! Thanks for all your hard work and I'm looking forward to your next video.
Thanks so much!
this content is so valuable!
Keep it up mate. The videos are class
Thanks, you explained, perfectly!
Thank you LEN AGA ROSSI for sending me this link and SHARING this info. Nice!
This is good life advice. We need to find our want, and find out how to do this
"Negative emotions are just as powerful a way to attach an audience to a character as positive emotions." Love this. 9:44
Another great video!
Every second of this video is absolutely useful
Glad to hear it!
Oh thank you! I recently discovered your channel and started using your videos as real lessons. One question: are you attending a university of cinema or are your videos the result of pure passion?
Thanks for you're golden advice! I been entertaining the thought of writing! My idea for a mini series is a "Wild West Horror" based on mythology and Vampires who turn ppl into zombies when they have been fed on enough with a rare chance of becoming a blood sucker themselfs! Have the town's rely on the Law working with Outlaws because it's the only option they got! But I want it as a fantasy ruled by realism.. have them only have to deal with the zombies in the day giving us time to get to like the characters who will be morally bothered ppl because these would be the most likely ppl to step up! Plus the lack of technology ads even more of a doomed vibe!
Thanks so much for this insightful video. May God bless you all
Very good video for upcoming writers
Very powerful lessons.
Great vid, headed to join the writer's room now 👌
One way to create a view about the character in the eyes of the audience is to show how people feel and feel about that character around him/her. This can be used to tell directly the motives of the character or to show the audience that what the world thinks about the character is rather different than his actual motives so even though your character is an anti-hero in the story but is connecting with the audience because the audience starts to empathize with the character.
Fantastic work on this video, truly.
Thank you!
Great explanation!
this is incredible thankyou !!
Gracias, muy buen análisis!!!
This is so good, thank you!
Is there any content (anywhere) where someone breaks down movies like this to fundamentally? I'm super intrigued by how you break down characters from other movies, as well as when you break down stories to their basics.
This is a great video. Thanks so much
Great video. I want the part II
this was so helpful thank you!
