Dead Space 3 got a pretty bad wrap when it launched 10 years ago. While most agreed that it is a good game, the numerous changes that EA demanded resulted in a less scary experience. It also received a lot of backlash for how microtransactions were implemented, and overall, there just isn't much love for the third and final game in the trilogy.
Is it really that bad though? A lot of people will tell you that it killed the franchise. I’m not so sure. There are things it doesn't do so well but overall this is a big and beautiful game that's worth your time!

In a recent interview with Chuck Beaver (Dead Space 3 producer), he said given the chance they "would redo it almost completely". Man, I'd love to see a remake that "keep the lore beat it's predicated on" but completely re-writes the main story. www.eurogamer.net/dead-space-3-producer-would-redo-it-almost-completely
I couldn't agree more! I didn't care much about the story past the original Dead Space, but I really enjoyed the gameplay and the more varied locations in Dead Space 3. I remember having tons of fun and finishing it in only a few days. That being said, I admit that when it comes to the balance between action and horror in games, I enjoy them more when the scale leans towards action. And Dead Space 3 was the perfect mix.
I really love 3, i started on the OG, the space parts are great and the icy planet and the freedom they give are great
IMHO I do feel that Isaac's personal journey had wrapped up by the end of the second game, so by the time we got to the third one, it was like "Well, what's left to do with the character? Why, put him in a daytime soap love storyline, of course!" I mean, at this stage, he's been through everything else. Also, I kind of like the idea of discovering the secret origin of the Markers, and it kind of brings the Marker storyline from the previous games to a full circle. So, is Dead Space 3 a downgrade from its predecessors? Yes, sadly it is, but that in no way makes it a terrible game; it's not the best entry in the franchise, but it's still very playable.
I think it's worth playing just for the final chapter and the origins of the markers.
@@goukigod That's what I mean about the origins bringing the Marker story full circle.
The setting was great, the gun combo sux. But it's a good game 👍, waiting for a 2,3 remake. Great video
I almost wanna say the setting is my favourite of the three games. Almost, because it's not fully realised and had the game been tonally the same as the earlier games it totally could have.
Dead Space 3 is incredible! It's not claustrophobic like 1+2. And slightly less gore... OK alot less crige and body gore. I did miss the psychosis and mental breakdown. But still, it's a fantastic game.
I’m so glad I went back to this game. I haven’t had this much fun in a long time.
Played this co-op with a friend and it was such a good time.
I loved going around with a seeker rifle that had an under barrel rocket launcher.
There are some pretty insane combos you can make. The stasis mod is a must though.
@@goukigod Oh absolutely, I always put the stasis modifiers on my weapons, especially since the other modifiers barely even add anything.
I'm playing right now through backwards compat with hdr at 60fps and it's been great.
I would think 60 FPS would be an ideal way to play it given how action focused it is and how fast some of the enemies are.
I'm gonna give the video a shot, but i'm probably not going to be convinced because i played this game shortly after its release and a few times since, and i've been further and further convinced in my experience of the games weakness. I enjoyed the gameplay a fair bit, but the game ultimately changed WAY too much in terms of the story and its characters, who all feel ultimately like husks of their original selves if they were present before (Isaac and ellie) and everyone else was super.... bland. So much potential, but it was bad. I'm also not sure if EA is to blame for this, or at least how much of it really IS just EA, because of Calisto Protocol which managed to make this game look golden in comparison.
For sure EA had a big hand in changing the game but Visceral weren’t blameless for its faults. I think ultimately if EA had let them do their own thing it would have turned out very different.
@@goukigod For sure. Think i'm just glad that another studio has it that does care about making it true to itself (i'm pretty convinced dead space 2 remake is going to be a thing).
I just think things in the gaming landscape have changed a lot since the original came out and EA was willing to take a gamble on a real survival horror again. It sounded like Visceral really wanted to take the series back to its roots but weren’t given the creative freedom or budget to do so. From what I’ve read, EA we’re once again disappointed with the remake’s sales despite topping the charts at launch. I think the issue is they compare it to RE numbers and it’s just never going to be that successful. I really hope they remaster the whole trilogy but I wouldn’t bank on it.
Can you still play this online coop ?
Yes
RE5, RE6, and Dead Space 3 had amazing co-op.
Playing through it with my brother atm. Thoroughly enjoying it. I get that its not like the first 2 games and fans hate it for that reason, but I've played a lot of coop games on pc and this is without a doubt one of the best available. Its not the game the fans wanted, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it at all.
Perfectly sums up how I feel about it!
Still my favorite game trilogy of all time. I had an absolute blast playing co-op. Best co-op game I’ve ever played.
I'm yet to hear a bad thing about it and very bummed that I haven't managed to play it yet.
@@goukigod People hated the micro transactions which you didn’t have to do. You could earn it all in game without spending a cent. The game itself was flawless.
to me, this is still the biggest disappointment probably in my entire life. one of my favorite series growing up was completely drowned by EA. the biggest tragedy is dead space didnt have momentum to the level RE did when they pulled that BS with RE6. capcom is a titan and knew they could bounce back and they did. so here's hoping EA doing that remake of dead space will spark the idea of doing this 3rd game the way it was supposed to be like did you know that in co op they wanted to impliment a feature where one screen would show this and the other person would see something different in hopes that it would cause both players to lose trust in eachother and the game and add a psychological aspect to it. that sounds fucking incredible and is where the glow comes from on my what dead space 3 was supposed to be shrine with all that said, its a fun game. like its not trash at all. but it is NOT dead space man. if gears of war took a hard turn into horror it wouldve pissed alotta fans off even if it was a good game, just like dead space 3 which is the polar opposite of that situation
Yes, I read all about "Shadow Issac" and the co-op they had originally planned. It sounded really awesome. I have no doubt in my mind that this could have been the best game in the trilogy. It gets very close on a couple of occasions to being scary, weapon-building is a clever idea and I think if you took the grinding out of collecting resources it could have been a superior system too. Hopefully, they remake all three games and reinvent this as it was originally planned.
I don't think gears of war going deep into the horror would be entirely unwelcome.
Too contradicting. Can't say it's the biggest disappointment of your life but then say it's still fun and not trash. Can't be both..
@@onepunchman4444 Don't think that's true. Something that isn't necessarily bad can still be dissapointing because it didn't meet expectations.
@@mrjtfang2 absolutely true but not the biggest disappointment on your life..
Im convinced people who trash this game havent played it, anyome who has played a dead space game would love this
I understand why people don't love it from a narrative perspective. 2 did such a great job of expanding the universe just enough whereas this feels like it shit the bed despite having some great ideas. From a gameplay standpoint though I think it's solid. Not as good as 2 but again, some great ideas that deepen the combat and allow for a ton of player expression.
I love carver
Yea I just started to play this game after having it for couple years lol 😅
hope you enjoy it
It really is true that Dead Space 3 doesn't get the respect it deserves, it's a great game (in some ways) warts and all. While it doesn't come close to the first 2, Dead Space 3 does do a lot of things right despite EA's meddling with the core franchise formula. Personally I enjoy the game quite a bit, call me crazy but I even enjoyed the next few games Visceral did Army of Two The Devil's Cartel and Battlefield Hardline. I miss Visceral, it's a shame what happened to them but hey they gave us Dead Space. EA can't take that away.
I reckon they'd try given have the chance 😂
@@goukigod Oh absolutely, considering they cancelled the Dead Space 2 Remake recently, because this remake didn't make enough money to satisfy them. Now Motive studios are being split up part of the team is going to help develop the next Battlefield game and the other part are going to be added to the development team working the forthcoming Iron Man game. It sucks but at least we got this remake so that's something.
For sure. Kind of a miracle we got a remake at all.
@@goukigod Indeed.
Dead Space 1 and 2 were great. I hate 3. I hope when they get to 3 with remakes, they have a complete story and setting do over and go back to survival horror. 3 Redux should be a fresh start and a way to kick on and do a fourth game also.
If they take the same approach as they did with the first remake and change/update the things that need attention, I think the third game could be amazing. I'm not convinced we're getting more remakes though.
@goukigod I hope we get more. The game sold well. They would be leaving money on the table if they didn't
Ds 3 is definitely underrated. The entire series is an ACTION horror not survival horror so that criticism makes no sense. Mtx are avoidable and had no impact on the game whatsoever. Got way too much hate. 💯
I Love it . May be the weakest part of the series, because its not so claustrophobic and to stay alive was not that hard - but it is still full of the best features , gameplay and design. - The weapon system sucked a little
Agreed. I dunno about the weapon system. I think it definitely sucks during the first play-through but it opens up heaps with new game + and it ends up being fun experimenting with different builds.
I dunno... staying alive was BLOODY HARD in places. I played solo, and I could totally tell that some swarms were made for 2 people. And that part waiting for the tram with 2 unkillable monsters.... nearly unservivable solo on anything harder than casual 😂
DS 3 has so much potential to be the scariest game of them all. Sadly EA was EA. I hope they continue with the remakes and do DS3 in the way Visceral studio wanted to.
I have a bad feeling EA is going to be EA again.
it's weird how corporations think sometimes. I agree, I can see history repeating itself. Incredible success on the first game that's pure horror, then lukewarming it in the sequels to attract new players. To me, that's like a restaurant offering a fantastic super spicy meal that's so good it attracts spice fans from everywhere. But the restaurants sees that people who dislike spicy food, but would want to like it because it's cool to like spicy food. So they water down the spice in it. Firstly, like DS2 for a bit, just enough to attract new players, but not so much to disappoint the fans of the original. But that didn't work (obviously), so instead of reverting to horror, they cranked up the action to 11. It's sad because I honestly think that meeting a moon made out of flesh should have been done way better than an action sequence and jabbing it in the eye. The whole story is a real lackluster, and what I hate the most is that Ellies and Issac relationship is entirely off-screen. You just met her in DS2, and immediately in the third, it's "we just got divorced" type of energy. It felt kind of like being robbed, and their entire relationship in the third felt all over the damn place. I really like the lore of the third and seeing the success od RE4 and DS remake could make EA realize all three should have been horror from the start. But like you said, will see.
Well the remake was full of gore and psycho stuff. So maybe EA are OK with stomping on babies now...
It's mechanically superior to the first and second, it's just got a weak story.
That's a pretty fair assessment.
It was an ok game, but story was complete trash.
Try it again. It’s part of an era where amazing games were looked over because we didn’t know what we had. I can’t believe how good the graphics hold up.
@@shaggymcdaniel3216 I went through the game twice - both in coop, and on my own, and I had a good time. However, better games came out in the same year so DS3 was quickly forgotten.
@shaggymcdaniel3216 Agree. We were so spoiled back then. But this game beats most stuff released in the decade that followed it.
First 2 were successful I dont get why they dumbed down the 3rd one ...
I guess EA has a policy against ripping the heads off exploding zombie-babies. 😂 They certainly blocked any psychosis in DS3, which was the biggest problem for Isaacs character, since being messed up is what made him different. Still love him. But I miss his mental illness.
Naw this game shiii
It's not the best Dead Space game by a long shot but it's far from shii
@@goukigod nah they ruined it by trying to change the old gameplay (which didn't come out far as good as they expected) and god the micro transactions
I didn't find the micro-transactions themselves that pervasive. You definitely feel the resource grind which leads you to them but I don't think the idea of searching for resources and parts to craft weapons is inherently a bad idea. I love how it ties into Issac's skillset and had it not been undermined by the monetisation and removal of weapon-specific ammo, it could have added a new level of strategy to the combat.
It's not
I didn't feel like I needed any micro transactions. I wander around looting and stomping anyway, and there was enough stuff without paying for more.
nuh uh ur wrong
Impossible
Nope he's right and you're wrong little sheep! Love live dead space 3!!!!
Long live DS3! Not as good as DSR or DS2, but still better than 99% of games released in the decade+ since!
I honestly think its horrid. Everything about it seems a step backward. Taken on its own it might be ok. But the previous two must be considered and this weighed against each. As such I can't see this as anything more than a dreadful failure. It is nothing like the previous two and seems very much a generic console title of it's time. Wholly disappointing. It also looks horrible imo. Lipstick on a pick. In 2023 this looks considerably more dated than the first two imo. It just looks cartoonish. Your review is very kind and extremely generous to say the least.
Each to their own. I can totally understand your perspective.
What shxt show of a game. Will never compare to 1 & 2. Don’t even try putting it on that pedestal.
Oh, I'm putting it there
Definitely comparable and you're just a blind sheep contrarian who doesn't like fun things. Long live dead space 3..oh and dead space was never survival horror it's always been action horror.. 💯
Me too. I have played all DS games. Including the remake. DSR and DS2 are tied first place in my heart. But I love DS3 more than almost every other game out there, even a decade+ later. Actually, the only game released after DS3 that I liked more was ME:LE. 3 was different, yes, but an outstanding game. No one makes games like this anymore.
Dead Space 3 is not Dead Space. It’s completely disrespectful to the franchise. Which you clearly must not love all that much.
@@jaysony8587 I disagree. I think it's you who don't love the franchise that much. A real fan would persevere through the good and the bad and be able to find something to love about it 😅
