  • If you go with tiles, you can install heating under the tiles which would be a bonus in the cold winter months. If you go with wood, just make sure it’s sealed and waxed. There are tiles that look like wood as well. Good luck with everything 😍😘

  • I'm an interior designer, and specialise in bathrooms. Yes, you can heat both tiles and timber floors, even carpeted floors. It's easier to maintain a tiled floor in a bathroom, but if you seal the timber, you can also use it in the bathroom. It really just depends on if you are happy with more maintenance. Personally, I think because this is a ensuite for the main bedroom, I would look at natural stone, which would give it a feeling of opulence. A nice limestone or travertine in a light cream colour would really suit the chateau. It would require sealing, but it will last decades and never go out of fashion.

    • Yep. When the toilet overflows you don't want the wood absorbing that! Even when you seal the wood there are always crevices on the edges that accumulate germs. Tiles, or real stone tiles you can clean... even marble hexagonal parquetry which I did in black and white in an old Craftsman-style bungalow in St. Paul, Mn.

    • Here in the states new hardwood floors aren’t really hard. They’re crap that dent easily, warp easily and require sanding and refinishing every 10 years and they aren’t thick enough to take multiple sandings. I had a previous home in Virginia built in the 1980’s which had really hard hardwood floors. The ones I have now are beautiful crap.

    • You need to buy solid wood flooring, not engineered hardwood. I live in the USA & bought genuine oak floors that should last a lifetime. They tell you if you buy engineered hardwoods that you can only sand them once or twice. They’re only 3/8 of an inch thick- just “pretty” wood on the surface. Solid hardwoods are “solid” and typically 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Totally different type of product with a totally different result.

  • Cork is the perfect floor; it's anti microbial, doesn't absorb water (why we use it to plug wine bottles) and has memory, which means it can't be damaged. It's renewable, meaning, it grows back, and it can be stained any colour. It's also warm on the feet, and it absorbs sound. I'd do cork floor in bath and kitchen. It's a bit pricey, but you cry only once. And in time, if you tire of it, it's super easy to remove. Cork can be had as a 'floating floor' too.

  • Anna for the Master BR use either Porcelain tile that looks like Carrera or Carrera Gold marble or just use the marble . Today unless you are a professional its very hard to tell the difference between the two once installed. But with the Marble you must seal it at least once a year which is not hard to do. If you use either of those your Master Bathroom will be outstanding and experiment with the cuts of either one for walls and flooring and inside the Shower walls and floor . For the floor you will generally need smaller tiles and often something with some texture to prevent slipping.Hardwood floors do not do well in Bathrooms and if you use them be prepared to seal the finish well to prevent water damage. Basically they are not practical for Bathrooms but do fine in Kitchens but again must be sealed well with the proper varnish or laquer..Also painted wood floors give interest to Kitchens..You could also use Travetine but it must be very well sealed as its more porous than Marble..

FYI my husband and I built a house overlooking the water on Mt Desert Island in Maine in 1993 and, looking for the same feeling of warmth that you expressed, we put down hardwood floors in all the bathrooms. They are still beautiful. Admittedly, they were treated wood planks, made to be used everywhere, even in the kitchen. And we were careful of them, wiping water spills when they happened. After 27 years there were a few places in the kitchen that needed a little care, but not in the bathrooms - and we loved those floors. Good Luck!

  • I'd go wood. Refinished original pine floors in my bathroom. Looks great. Adds warmth to the room.

  • Tiles, plus floor heating is what I suggest. Previously had a subfloor in 2 out of 3 bathrooms. They were small bathroom and the contractor did a great job. Had to make room near the door for the electrical floor box terminal. Was a blessing during winters in Colorado, USA. Good luck. Enjoy the videos over the last 2 years. Peace

  • Im definitely team tiles! One of the things I love in our bathroom (apart from underfloor heating), is the fact that our shower doesnt have a door or curtain - we have a wet room, so no need for a seperate shower tray, and the lack of barrier means that once you've finished showering there's little temperature difference between the shower cubicle and the rest of the bathroom. Obviously, if you tend to splash a lot, this isn't so practical.

  • For the Master Suite bath, go with large tiles or better yet marble on the angle with an outside border pattern to make it look like an area rug. Use the coordinating tiles in the shower. .You can purchase tiles that have wood grain appearance. Anna glad you are wearing protective gear. Philip, call the company President back. Tell them what happened with the Customer Service guy instructing you to do the wrong thing. Make them correct their problem with the motor by giving you a new one and having a professional company come out and remove and install the old one. Best to get a warranty on the mechanicals through a certified dealer - that way the onerous is on them and their pocketbook.

  • Definitely tiles in the bathroom. There’s some amazing product out there that actually replicates wood, but is ceramic and it looks great. Check it out!

  • You look fabulous in red Philip. I strongly suggest a new subfloor in the new bath & in-floor heating. Whatever you decide will look amazing.

  • WOOD! I've had wood floors in my old house for decades (in the bathrooms) with no issues. It will give you that scandi look I think you like Anna. When you asked about the colour of your entryway you trusted your instincts about the light colour...trust your instincts here too.

  • I lived in an old home and had wooden floors in my bathrooms and kitchen. They held up extremely well. Like you Anna I too believe they add real warmth.

  • I’m so out numbered but I love the look and the feel of wood…tile is so cold, sterile, and loud ….just my opinion…you always (both) make the best choices that way if something happens, it will be easier your taste and aesthetic are always right on❤😮😮😮😮

  • I needed some floor-scraping, electric-frying, waste-pipe-installing energy in my life today. Thanks for the giggles! I'm team wood floors btw. My mom has them in her house and they're doing just great 10 years on!

  • How about both tile and wood? Tile that looks like wood is amazing and would hold up for years and years without the constant worry of water damage. Love your content. You are both absolute gems!
