Altra Torin 6 Review after 185 Miles // Lackluster

Full performance review of the @altrarunning Torin 6 after 185 miles! Overall the Torin 6 is a good shoe but that's not to say it's without flaws. While the build is great, I would describe it's performance as "lackluster" but for a daily trainer maybe that's OK. This said, I will continue to use the Torin 6 shoe for those easy miles and treadmill runs. In this video, I also discuss the build, comfort, performance, and value. What is your experience in Altra shoes? Thank you for checking out the video!

  • Amazon is selling them for $75 in select sizes right now. Ordered myself a pair. Been running in the 5s and enjoy them. Looking forward to the 6s.

  • Great video. Torin 6 and Escalante 3 is all I wear.

  • Many thanks for the review, very valuable! Especially hearing that the midsole turned flat after only 50 miles, contrary to another, positive review after 400 miles. Possibly the weight of a runner, position of the strike / gait influencing? There are also some mixed reviews on EgoMax in general, e.g. Via Olympus considered hardish, but then, I have not yet experienced such nonresponsiveness with TIMP4 and 130 miles, am though using those on mixed terrain, mostly gravel and forest trails.

  • Great video! I have 2 pair of Torin 6's in my rotation and love them. I thought the 6 was a big improvement over the 5, but that might have been because my 5s had almost 300 miles on them when I started wearing the 6s. I've been using Altra Torins since the Torin 2. Since switching to only using Altra, I haven't had any issues with plantar fasciitis so I'm a big fan, despite applying for the Altra Red team 2 or 3 times and not being selected.

    • That's great feedback! Not sure it really came out in the video well but I do feel that runners can benefit by having Altra's in the shoe rotation. I'll continue to use my pair of Torin 6, probably until they are completely worn out!

  • Thanks for the vid. I just picked these up on sale and they're my third Torin after the 4 and 5. Hated the 4 due to the internal plastic straps, found the 5 to be much better. If the 6 shows further improvement, I'm game. I only run in Altras and have also used Escalates and Racers. Like the current Escalante 3s, but they seem a touch narrow, which is where the Torin usually comes through. Racers are pretty amazing, but there's a hard stop at about 300 miles. With over 300 on my Escalante 3s, it's time to start to alternate with a new pair, look forward to seeing how the 6s work out.

  • Well I ordered two different Hokas from Zappos and returned them the next day because the toe box are ridiculously narrow and so running over 100 miles in my Altra Escalante 2 im working my way to sticking with Altra indefinitely i mean indefinitely beautiful Altra Torin 6 soft denim color 🤩 thanks a lot for your amazing review stunning footage there’s another youtuber who also mentions the tounge rubbing on his skin like you but you have a scab already oh wow hopefully on the 7s coming they listen to your experiences and should be inspired by Sketchers like you say and wow their not good for continual longterm midsole support 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • Great feedback and I really appreciate you sharing and for watching the video! I don't mind a more narrow fitting shoe but the Altras are nice for those recovery runs, I just have to be careful not to wear short socks 🙂

  • Whohoo! Knock on door at 10;26 minute make of this video and its delivery of my own Torin 6's!!! I use Altras exclusively now. Everything else makes me feel a bit Closter phobic. Current favorites have been the Torin 4s (taking over from my old Kayano 22 lite shows) with the Riveras the go to for 5km runs. Hoping the Torin 5s are the right show to train for a half I'm hoping to do. Currently injured meniscus but did a quick 10yd performance review on the new shoes and they fit like a glove. 😃

  • Just bought a pair of these at Ross for $48. Put them on the ground today for a 9 mile run. First time with a zero drop shoe. I really feel the ground under me, and the street I ran on was crowned, but the shoe was stable enough where my foot wasn't wobbly like some others I have run in. That being said, i wouldnt use this shoe other than in a rotation, due to the performance issue mentioned in the video. No foot pain afterwards.

    • Great bye! And I agree that the shoe is good but probably best if part of your shoe rotation (as you mentioned) vs your dedicated road trainer.

  • Hey New to the channel and new to Altra’s. Thanks for the review. I’ve already invested in some Torin 6’s here in the UK in a sale. A few questions; so what zero drop / balanced shoe do you like? One that is versatile for those of us who can’t afford loads of pairs? What is the traction like in the wet? If/when you transitioned would you / do you still run in a mid drop shoe for races? I’m caught in wanting to transition carefully but also have some races signed up to that I won’t be ready to do in my Altras. Also they by the sound of it won’t have enough pop! I have some Kinvara’s (4mm drop) but the midsole is v firm. I seem to suit a rocker style, lowish stack (hate being high off the ground) but do need some cushioning. Any ideas welcome - should I just pull out of races and focus on lower miles to allow the transition.

    • Thanks for being here and for the comment! You've got some great questions here! First off, the Torin 6 was my first go at a zero drop shoe. I have run in a handful of 4mm drop shoes (and many more 6mm to 10mm drop shoes). The Torin 6 traction is better than expected and will do great when wet. If you are use to running in a 10mm drop shoe then jumping right into a zero drop will likely be felt after the first handful of runs. That said, everyone is different. I've heard that others get tight calves for the first while when starting to run in zero drop shoes. That didn't happen to me but that could have been because I also ran in other shoes. I also message my calves and hamstrings nearly daily which can help keep your muscles from getting too tight. The Torin 6 is not a "poppy" shoe. A decent daily trainer but not one that I ever felt fast in. That said, I've really been enjoying the Skechers Razor 4, which has a 4mm drop (30mm heal, 26mm forefoot). It's a faster shoe with an inspiring and springy midsole which also feels nice for those easy and long runs. I just published a full review on that shoe. Hope this helps! Oh, and I'd run the races, even if just for the experience of it.

    • Altra Vanish Tempo is a great shoe with slight less stress on the calves compared to the other Altras

  • Good thoughts overall. I'd consider myself still a beginning runner (3 yrs) and I use the Altra Torin as my daily trainer (2-3x week, 12 mi max). I agree on the tongue. Better than the 5, but still a risk. I've read in early previews that the 7 coming out this June will have a much better tongue and slightly taller stack height. Might be worth a review then? For my race/distance runs I use the Paradigm 6. I like the better stack (30mm) and the slight stability adds even though I'm a neutral runner. Enjoyed the review with some solid miles on them.
