This years minecraft mob vote had a lot of drama, but one thing we weren't expecting was for it to have been botted. I was skeptical, but got in contact with a few individuals who gave me evidence I just couldn't ignore...

Honestly the fact that China was included in the mob vote for the first time explains it well enough for me. Chinese players who don't speak much English probably never saw much of the English speaking community's discussion, so if on average they preferred the armadillo, it's not like we'd know or consider their votes. I think saying there was more mob votes than last year is ignoring a crucial fact is that the voting servers were open for 48 hours compared to 1 hour. It allowed people who couldn't attend Minecraft live to actually vote too
This ^ Take in how much more of the casual/outside of the minecraft internet community could have easy access to vote means the internet polls are just polling a select demographic from minecraft My nephew is young enough that his response when I tols him Armadillo won was "tell mine craft to add it already. We need that armour for our dogs" He didnt care about the other options I mentioned that lost. He was just excited when he heard dog armour 🤷♀️

Still doesnt make sense that all other polls ever had the armadillo win, it was always the crab.
@@ToxicMothBoiAcknowledge that Minecraft isn't only available on English speaking countries, on polls from Brazil, the Armadillo was winning, and i heard from others it also was a favorite in China. Also, maybe a bunch of crab voters were trying to add all 3 by not voting on the actual vote, but polls aren't the actual vote, and therefore they voted the polls and not the actual vote.

Another consideration is that I have a suspicion younger players are most likely to vote for the armadillo (the assumption is that younger players play more casually and care more about having pets within the game). In which case these players are less likely to have a voice on social media/take part in twitter polls, meaning there were a lot more players who preferred the armadillo than we thought.
I can verify this. my younger brother (10) voted for it because he thought it would be cool for pets to have armor
I was about to comment the same thing, well said
This is exactly my thinking. It also explains why there were more votes, because the mob vote took place on twitter last year and was most likely unable to reach many players, so putting the vote in the game would increase the number of votes, especially from younger players
Yeah my younger bro voted armadillo i voted crab
Yes my younger siblings voted for the Armadillo because of the dog armor being cool
I don't think they were botted in the end. A lot of Latin America votes were for the armadillo, while the American votes were for the crab. Also, most votes were on Twitter anyway, and a lot of kids who aren't on Twitter might vote for the armadillo because they want dog armor more than a reach extension.

I know a bunch of people who voted armadillo but just, arent that active on social media. Im thinking that the silent majority wanted armadillo while the vocal few wanted crab.
Another thing, people who posted polls, normally have their own fanbase that will be the majority voters. I've seen polls with the penguin winning or the armadillo. What about kids? A lot of them may not have youtube. I believe that the armadillo could have easily won.
The Chinese vote inclusion could maybe also explain why all the polls on Twitter didn't show the same result, as maybe China limits/blocks access to Twitter from inside China, so Chinese Minecrafters aren't included in the Twitter polls.
And since the crab rave meme presumably has no presence in China, it’s not like the crab has any pop culture edge in China like it does in the West
Or maybe they also just don't watch the same KZheadrs as us which I find to also be highly likely.

I've seen tons of foreign people hard advocate for the armadillo. Which is something a lot of people don't take into consideration. US isn't the only country voting. A lot of people across the globe simply preferred different mobs. For example, I've seen a lot of Brazilian fans and influencers rooting for the armadillo because it's Brazil's national animal. And Brazil isn't exactly a small country. I'm not saying there wasn't rigging, but Armadillo's victory could be a 100% legit.
It's exposed for if you say "armadillo" "armadillo" it counts as two votes for armadillo in one vote
You raise a good point. Another thing to consider is that these poles were taken on youtube, and likely only older players might have seen them. We don't know how many kids are just playing on their moms phone and just voted for the armadillo because it was described with the words "cute" and "dog"
@TheHatManCole older players also voted armadillo because mojang are notorious for not adding what the community expected from the mob vote. So maybe more than half a block placement distance vs guaranteed dog armour ( will become pvp meta ) is a lot more favourable.
I totally agree! And polls on twitter or even youtube are not great data, considering that not everyone has these platforms.

Minecraft doesn't have to do the mob vote, they could simply just not have put it in place in the first place which would have prevented people from getting pissed off about it when it doesn't go their way. Hell they could still do the mob vote, but just do it internally among the company instead of externally, that way the people who actually have to code the stuff would be doing the one they're most interested in anyways and it could be this cool little bonus to an update. Except if you were playing for awhile how would the claw help you? You're standing next to a 3 block tall wall, are you going to make it 4 with the claw? Not unless you climb it. This is not true. The amount of people who used that hashtag and DIDN’T vote is so small and far from significant.
The main reason why people are getting more and more worked up about this is that in the beginning Mojang promised to gradually add the losing mobs later on and never did. We haven’t seen a single mob vote mob added (except the frog because it was to add another mob for the wild update)
The frog was part of a Biome Vote which is different from mob vote. So they haven't even added a single mob vote loser.

I feel like the discussion I see online regarding the mob vote often fails to account for the fact that an inconceivable amount of children (who don't interact with Reddit posts and KZhead polls) play Minecraft. Especially since the mob vote was heavily integrated into the bedrock client itself this time, I'm sure most of these kids clicked on it, voted the armadillo because they thought it was cuter than the other two (and it protects their doggies) and moved on.

From the description of the hack, it really sounds like microsoft could do a data warehouse query to join the tokens with xbox logins, then filter and do a unique/most recent per user. Its pretty standard backend engineering to store everything, so you can slice and dice it later. Every vote request can go through, but that doesnt mean it will end up counted
I had first thought before I clicked on the video that Mojang had botted the Minecraft Mob Vote to try and ignore the ongoing outrage about stopping the Mob Votes, and bot the Mob Vote so it would seem legit. But this makes much more sense now
I think the botting theory fails to recognize the sheer quantity of casual minecraft players. The previous mob votes didn’t offer a catered feature for casual players (wolf armor would appeal very heavily to casual players, whereas the crab claw feels too technical to understand as an unknowledgeable player) and thus a much larger demographic of minecraft users had a reason to vote this year. Casual players are the VAST majority of minecraft players, so it makes sense a feature more casually oriented would win by default.

Microsoft is extremely lazy, we get a update a year yet Notch updated it a week or a month. We get 1 new mob almost each update when what we should get is multiple new mobs. This is why Minecraft needed to stay indie, because Minecraft would be way better than this.

I think there was just more casual players participating in the vote than usual, since you could vote directly via bedrock edition. The armadillo looks really cute and casual players tend to like dogs a lot, but most probably don't go voting on KZhead polls.

Yeah like 90% of people I’ve heard said they wanted the armadillos, the ONLY times I saw a majority for crabs was KZheadrs or KZhead polls. And most of the polls are people just picking a random thing, and is nowhere near proof that people wanted the crab more
If the votes would be tied to accounts that own the game, then maybe the vote servers simply tossed those bots, because while they are new users, they aren't valid users.
It unfortunately doesn't work like that, you have to have a minecraft account to get the token, and because they discovered a method for tokens, they were able to skip the account identification completely Also, fyi the (java) system (they're rather similar) works like that: You open minecraft with a token (a string of characters), which you get when you authenticate to microsoft servers by opening the launcher and logging in. Then, the token is used in a parameter for the jar command launching the game (like -Xmx or -Xms - assigning memory for the java virtual machine) Then, when you join a server, the token gets sent to the server, which then authenticates you with the microsoft servers. This is on by default, and is used for most private servers/smp's, and also some servers like Hypixel. Bedrock's token is probably also requested when the game starts, or when you log in, and because it makes a new token everytime, they could vote infinitely.
If that happened, then all iphone users who voted, wouldve had their votes thrown out, which is also bad

It's also sus that last update the ancient mob sniffer got added on the archeology update. And now the dog armor for the combat adventure update... 🤔
Also not to be controversial but voter ID would be the solution for this. You have to log into your account and you only get one per account
Fun fact: in 2017 only 2680 people voted in mob vote. If there were 40 more votes for The Great Hunger, it would be added to Minecraft instead of phantom

I agree. But think about how long that would take to code, and they don't want to overload us with tons of stuff all at once, they want it to be spread out over time so we keep playing until the next update, effectively giving them more money.

When talking about the polls on KZhead and Twitter, keep in mind that this year's vote had specific features designed to get the younger MC audience voting. First of all, the voting window was more than DOUBLE the length of last year (24 hrs in 2022 vs 48 hrs & 15 minutes in 2023), to make sure everyone had a chance to vote. Second, they made sure to emphasize that you could vote in the bedrock server (highly accessible to kids on phones/tablets), and had it highlighted in the main menu of Bedrock edition. Finally, the entire Chinese MC playerbase was able to vote this year. Granted, not all of them will be kids, but this still adds a bunch of votes to the total. TL;DR: I don't think the vote was bottled. The evidence just isn't there, and there are reasonable and probable explanations to all the points made in this video.
The only reason is it is hacked
Exactly
This year was the very first time Minecraft rewrote their user guidelines to explicitly define the game as a "children's game", meant to be safe for those 10 and under. Microsoft does not care that the average age is 24-27. Even how the employees act in the videos, super hyper and fake smiles, it's all pandering to kids. They don't care about US anymore.
bro did not watch the video
Imagine ignoring all the evidence
Abnormal API usage would definitely look obviously different compared to normal use. From the bedrock mob vote server: The player would have at least claimed the cape and potentially walked into some block position triggers on the way to the vote levers. From the website and Java launcher: The browser would have at least loaded all the images and the browser headers need to make sense. And of course, thousands of API usages coming from the same IP when only 1 or few is expected can add to the obviousness. That would be why they say it didn't impact the results.
@@IDrankALavaLamp IP address spoofing can't complete a 3-way handshake in TCP.

I haven't watched the video yet, but as someone from Poland, I can tell you that in the polls our big youtubers made, the armadillo was the one with most votes, just looking at the start, it seems like you'll be talking about US centred stuff
I saw memes about how mojang should just add all 3 mobs(seen in places outside the minecraft bubble). and I believe that there seemed to be some agreement that all mobs where good which got some more people to vote 1. because they where reminded of the mob vote (which many who don't consume minecraft content don't get) 2. because they would feel more like they could make a difference in case of a close call.
I think it's also important to realize population skew in Community polls. A large portion of the polls (especially as documented in this video) were done on the platform previously known as Twitter. Twitter user demographics could be substantially different from average Minecraft demographics and thus skew the polls. A general theory goes that since Twitter caters more towards adults (not specifically excluding teens but definitely not the key demographic), a large portion of votes would be utility skewed. Older players would see the utility of the crab claw as more valuable than Wolf Armor (niche use in adventuring and combat, made less necessary as player skill increases), and also more valuable than whatever speed a penguin may give boats (especially given their tendencies to be found closer to icy oceans which are notoriously bad to travel with boats). Again just a theory but something to consider when looking at this purely statistically.
you're assuming a majority of people make decisions logically
1 block reach is totally more useful than making dogs viable in-game 🤡
@ARandomEliatrope lava:(no really it is one of the most common death reasons for these little shits)

I think going by polls is a bit inaccurate, since those polls were only polling a specific portion of the playerbase. Polls with more casual players leaned far towards the Armadillo, as a poll on Eyecraft MCs channel showed
There were many polls like that
I voted armadillo because xenarthrans are really fucking cool and are super underrepresented in games. Plenty of games have crabs or penguins, not many have sloths, anteaters, or armadillos.

I think something else potentially relevant is all the polls you showed were in english. As you mentioned, Chinese players were able to vote this year. And its possible that specific mobs might be more or less popular in regions where they are familiar. Thus the english polls might not be representative of non-english speaking opinion.
Yeah. If social media says so it doesn't mean the real players choose it. Lots of my friend who didn't even buy Minecraft took the votes in many of their social account and talk about it.

As a developer myself, I assume that they can probably view a history of the Auth tokens (MCToken), which are coupled to the Xbox account. When they see that the Xbox account field is empty or very recently created they can invalidate the vote. Note that I am not saying with 100% certainty that this is how they did it, but it is likely very similar. It could be that they are still looking into it, because development/patches take time. But if a Minecraft employee publicly states that it is solved, i’d believe them, since the invalidation process could be quite easy.
