Panantukan Tutorial | 7 Entries from Filipino Boxing

PANANTUKAN - also known as Filipino Boxing - is an empty hand art with many of its techniques based on the movements of the knife, stick & sword.
The purpose of this video is to share 7 entries from the Panantukan that I like to teach.
Disclaimer (3 pointers about this video):
1. First off, for this particular set of material, it would help if the student already has good boxing skills. And what that means is: clean punches, strong striking skills, good footwork & live sparring. Also, of equal importance, the student should have some skill and understanding of the weaponry from the FMA.
2. Secondly, I think a student should have an understanding of the history of the Art. Unfortunately, this is beyond the scope of this video. But I think it’s really important. If you’re interested, personally I would recommend Guro Dan Inosanto’s Panantukan video. It’s volume 4 in his Definitive Collection. In it, he covers the history, lineage, and several techniques. I think it’s really great overview and would definitely assist in your understanding of the Art of Panantukan. Visit inosanto.com/ to purchase.
3. And lastly, you should be aware that not all FMA systems have Panantukan. There are several different styles, systems, methods out there ...and this can be really confusing if you’re a new student looking to study the Art.
Now with that being said, let's look at the techniques taught in this video:
Entries:
Trap Gun / Split / Gunting / Songab / Dalineus / Hand Destruction /Adlaw
Striking Combination:
Cross → Slap → Elbow → Knee
Balance Disruption:
Offset 45 Degrees
Finish:
Overhand Punch or Slap or Forearm
**Note that we did not show every variation, nor all the intricacies that go along with each entry.
Chapters
00:00 Intro
01:05 Description
04:05 Overview
07:00 Trap Gun
08:10 Split Entry
10:00 Gunting
11:03 Songab
12:02 Dalineus
13:26 Knuckle Cruncher
14:36 Adlaw
15:46 Conclusion
In order to fully grasp the concepts exemplified by Panantukan, you have to understand the historical context. Many of the empty hand motions come from the weaponry methods. Therefore, to make a good video (this is my opinion of course), the weaponry tactics should be shown in relation to the empty hand motions.
The problem is much of the true blade work is lethal. Therefore, I feel most of that knowledge is not for public consumption. As an instructor, you have to have what's called - ‘Morality in Transmission of the Art.’
Now, of course, not all the techniques come from the weaponry. In fact, to the untrained eye, much of the Art of Panantukan may actually look like a dirty version of western boxing. That’s because there are actually two versions of the Art: There’s the original historical combative version / Then there’s a version that became a Sport around the year 1905. This is why understanding the history is so important.
What is Kali?
“Kali” is the ancient indigenous martial art form from the Philippine Archipelago (formerly Maharlika) that pre-dates the Spanish conquest of the island nation and is largely based on the use of the sword & other weaponry.

  • We had a great time making this tutorial video. Though truth be told, the editing process proved to be very challenging. There was a lot of extra footage we wanted to include, but decided 17 minutes and 30 seconds was long enough 😄. Having said that, we are quite pleased with the end result. We hope you enjoy the footage and find value in the material covered.

  • Though it turned out I had world class foot speed and athletic talent, after studying with Inosantos I ended up up kicking a lot of world class butt. That included some rather large "specimens" if you know what I mean. Panantukan rules.For elbows go with southeast Indo-China styles if you want to save time and get valid usage. Plus the stick is really the only legally relevant modern weapon.

  • Kali is the empty handed version of doce pares using very sharp bolos of pilipino during colonial era in the Philippines.althoug silat nowadays is rising popular not knowing that it's just indonesian Kali by using animal form from tiger claws.the core technique of silat is the heaven six of Arnis and the gunting technique.you just quadruple the speed of Kali ang it became silat that also came from stick fighting substituted as bolo from practicing the deadly art of bolo and the cal 45 is born because of that fearsome. Very sharp bolo.

    • Thank you for your comment. Though I must admit I don't understand what you are saying. Doce Pare is a style that was formed in Cebu City in 1932 by 12 masters of different styles from the greater Cebu area. The Martial Arts of this archipelago predate the Spanish conquest of the island nation. There are hundreds, if not thousands of different styles with strong similarities found all across Southeast Asia. The terms "Heaven 6, Standard 6, & Earth 6" were coined by Guro Dan Inosanto's mother to help organize the many siniwali patterns from the Filipino Martial Arts that he was learning from several different teachers. These names have since become standardized across most FMA styles. Thank you again for commenting. I find the history of these arts to be quite fascinating.

      @DaytonKaliAcademy@DaytonKaliAcademy Жыл бұрын
    • Kali is so much more than empty hand. In fact, most people think of stick fighting when you mention words like kali, escrima or arnis. But today most of these different masters will teach a combination of stick, knife, sword, boxing, trapping, standup grappling etc. The amount of focus ob each part of Filipino martial arts will vary a lot. Some Doce Pares practitioners are almost pure stick fighters, even though they also work on other arts.

      @Ytterdahls@Ytterdahls Жыл бұрын
    • WOW That's ancient theory and before it was codified for Western influence. There were essentially basic concepts that any and all combat systems required. For example in this case entry 1/3 used to be simply the first concept of closing for ease of comprehension. The southeast Asian Martial arts are all intertwined by basic concepts then each one adds it's own flavor determined by what influenced it. There's probably over a thousand separate art styles in the region. It's purely weapons. Even the original empty hands are supposed to be done as if one has a palm stick knife for example. Things changed with Western influence. It actually lost a great deal because Western influence added rules where there were none to stifle the arts. After altering it's original format to mimic the southeast Asian Martial arts. Used to be that gentleman boxing style remember? They won't admit it but the Southeast Asian Martial arts is why that changed over time. I get what you're saying but most folks don't see past the after Western influence days. This is why you'll see comments from Pinoy people that they just realized about their own arts. They're not lying. Even things within my lifetime they know nothing about solely because of western influence. I'm a history nerd and martial arts is a thing with me. With a particular passion for SEMA. Yaw yan or Filipino kickboxing came about late 60's early 70's and it got zero coverage for what it was created for. People don't know why it was even called the dance of death but soldiers who were there know what it was created for and why it earned the moniker. Two of them were my original instructors. They told me a lotta things

    • You're pointing out the most basic of boxing strategies ....which I agree with. This is why I said in the video and wrote in the description that one should already have good boxing skills before coming to this particular material. Every offensive move obviously has it's counter and so on.... Of course, it's not just about you. It's also about the caliber of opponent in front of you. Just because something is available doesn't mean you can pull it off. Counter point to that - anything is possible if you can pull it off. There are many elements to fighting (and sparring), such as timing, distance, rhythm, accuracy, toughness, speed, strength, skill.... and the list goes on. So yes, I agree with your comment - but I also sincerely think it is a bit short sighted. As a lifelong student of the game, I hope you understand. Thanks for commenting.

Also, when the opponent jabs high to your face, couldn't you simultaneously execute your lead hand jab underneath his incoming jabbing arm as an entry like a boxing counter punch????

    @TonyqTNT@TonyqTNTАй бұрын
    • Thanks for commenting. I personally do not use Gunting & Cruzada as interchangeable terms. Of course, this is probably just a style thing. I've studied several FMA styles and 3 of those styles have very specific techniques (or group of techniques) that they term Cruzada. Philosophically, I see no problem using these terms interchangeably. As far as your question about entries, the systems I teach have a total of 44 different entries. This video only covered 7 of those entries. Check out the write up that accompanies this video.

    • Panantukan is a contraction of the Tagalog term pananantukan, according to Dan Inosanto. It is generally attributed to the empty hands and boxing system infused by FMA pioneers Juan "Johnny" Lacoste, Leodoro "Lucky" Lucaylucay and Floro Villabrille into the Filipino martial arts component of the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts located on the West Coast of the United States. Pananantukan, which Inosanto picked up from his Visayan elder instructors, is a corruption of panununtukan. It is said that originally, Lucaylucay wanted to call his art Suntukan, but he was concerned that it would be confused with Shotokan Karate, so he used the term Panantukan instead.

      @DaytonKaliAcademy@DaytonKaliAcademy Жыл бұрын
    • @@DaytonKaliAcademy nope. with all due respect to Mr. Inosanto, the correct term is panuntukan but probably because of the American accent the correct term got lost. If we even look at the word panuntukan, it was taken from the root word suntok which means punch. Panununtok is the act of punching. And panuntukan is the art of punching. Maybe its time that this terms are corrected. Anyways, thanks for learning Filipino Martial Arts. Mabuhay!

    • @@quincyfeliscuzo602 Thank you for your comment. As I understand it, this is not the black & white issue you are making the spelling variances to be. Here is the beginning of a write up from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suntukan: Suntukan is the fist-related striking component of Filipino martial arts. In the central Philippine island region of Visayas, it is known as Pangamot or Pakamot and Sumbagay. It is also known as Mano-mano and often referred to in Western martial arts circles of Inosanto lineage as Panantukan. Although it is also called Filipino Boxing, this article pertains to the Filipino martial art and should not be confused with the Western sport of boxing as practiced in the Philippines. In recent times, suntukan has become a generalized term for any brawls in the Philippines, with the term panantukan becoming more frequently used to denote the actual martial art.[1]

      @DaytonKaliAcademy@DaytonKaliAcademy Жыл бұрын
  • 😢original called Suntukan NOT Panantukan-Panuntukan. Inosanto made up the name, might mix with shotokan or westerner don’t know how to pronounce it. It’s a form of street fighting in the Philippines, Inosanto learn from lucay lucay. It was created during Spanish rules. Use in America-Philippines war, WW2 guerilla warfare. Art been practiced for over 100yrs, started from Saaverdra Eskrima. Mixing with western boxing is NOT the real suntukan, we as practitioners use basics strikes number as guidelines of hits.

    @denden01161@denden01161Ай бұрын
    • Your facts are mixed up. Dan Inosanto did not make up the name Panantukan / Panuntukan. His instructors Juan "Johnny" Lacoste, Leodoro "Lucky" Lucaylucay, and Floro Villabrille were using the term. You are correct about them using the term instead of Suntukan so westerns wouldn't confuse it with Shotokan Karate. Also, your claim the Art came from Saavedra Eskrima is strange, considering Lorenzo “Tatay Ensong” Saavedra lived from 1852 - 1944. The Art is much older than this. It seems Panantukan, Panuntukan, and Suntukan are ultimately interchangeable terms. I think this is fine considering that all these terms pay homage to their indigenous origin. I think your crying face emoji 😥 would be better spent complaining about the continued use of the name "Philippines" - considering that this name pays homage to King Phillip II of Spain with disregard for the island nation's pre-Spanish history.

The art was pass down to father n son thru generations but diluted with westerners boxing. Dad and my teacher told me keep the art simple don’t diluted it. • @@denden01161 You're passionate about your Art. That's good. But your description of FMA history seems way off. The Art was not established in 1521. 1521 is the date of when Ferdinand Magellan was killed on the island of Mactan. The Art predates the coming of the Spanish. You seem to be describing the history of the Cebu people and the FMA that came out Cebu. I don't understand how you can discount the hundreds of other styles that exist throughout the Philippines.

The art spread to 3 main island which have their own version Visayan call it Eskrima, Manilas(Luzon)call it Arnis, Mindanaowan call it Kali(Kalistas means Eskrimador)have their own flavor or translation, which it’s kool.
