Fatal high speed police chase - Unmarked SAAB 9-5 Aero vs Kawasaki ZX-10R *Translated*

***EDIT This video doesn´t show the crash! At 47:57 the chopper report the bike has wrecked. There is no pics of the bike after the crash in this video. Subtitles is only availible first 20 minutes.
This guy did only have license to drive cars, caught riding a bike can result in a 6 month ban. Speeding at 81 km/h over the limit (and more) will revoke your license for 8 month. Bottom line, many riders going fast on 1000cc sportbikes will run. Choppers are used rarely to catch speeders***
Stockholm, Sweden.
A Kawasaki ZX-10R fly by an unmarked SAAB. The biker has no mirrors and ain´t aware of he is being followed by the police.
At 14.30 the bike starts to pick up the pace.
At 17.10 he looks back and guns it. Soon he is gone and this unit doesn´t have the bike insight again. Although the bike is far away this unit continues to chase him for 30 minutes. More than 20 unites including a chopper were involved in this chase.
A heating debate started in Sweden if police acting appropriate due to the fact this was only a traffic violation. The biker died in the end when he slammed into a road barrier, the passenger didn´t suffer any injuries. The rider was just a regular chap going out for a ride on his ZX-10R equipped with a Racefit Growler
Nothing happens in the last 20 minutes, just radio traffic

Sure, it took me a minute or 2 more to get from A to B sometimes. And sometimes it took 10 minutes more. Totally worth the wait. I drive without stress. I want to go from A to B safely, without stress. And even in today's traffic this is still possible. It is not worth dying on the roads while trying to get from A to B. And so it is very worth it to drive defensively. And anticipate. And solve mistakes others make. Etc. Etc. @@Ryan.Kooper PS; it may cost a brake pad or 2 more than it should,. but totally worth the 25 bucks.

  • I´m swedish so I can understand what is said on the police radio. And I know the roads that is shown in this vid. We have a son living very close to where it all ended, so I drive there frequently. The chase with patrol cars was aborted long before the biker hit the roadblock and died. The chase was led from a police helicopter. The first patrol car arrived almost one minute after the crash, so they were a couple of kilometers behind. The biker stressed himself - he had no drivers licence for the bike ... Sometimes the road is blocked right at the entrance to Södra Länken, which is a system of road tunnels, due to heavy traffic/congestions/accidents in the tunnel. If so, the orange lights that is seen right before the patrol car at the crash site is flashing. Biker didn´t see the warning ligth? Natural selection ...

I kept my racing style where it belonged on the track, mainly Oulton park U.K. I've had many off's on the road due to oil and diesel. only time I have ever been injured was when stationary and hit from behind by stupid car drivers I now walk with a limp. • hahaha... and that's why I'm an ex-biker! I was always nervous prior to every ride. Extreme butterflies. I was fine the second I was riding. Everyone I rode with had an accident. I didn't, but I was sure my time would come soon enough. Having had a couple of near incidents because drivers are blind, I eventually decided I was literally riding my luck. Oddly enough the one make of car my actual riding instructor warned me as being the worst actually turned out to be the closest I came to being driven into as they changed lanes (and no I actually never cared for speed; just loved the sensation of riding). I don't think anyone should get a drivers licence until they've passed a bike test; it's the only way to teach drivers. Sure, some bikers are irresponsible but few drivers can be trusted.

    • Apart from the tragedy to the bike rider, don't forget that for the car-driver, even when physically unharmed, it can be a traumatic experience too. Those superbikes are very very tempting. It takes a lot of discipline and luck to not get hurt in the long run. A friend of me bought a new streetbike many years ago. A few days later his brother (also a friend of me) borrowed it for a short ride of maybe an hour, crashed, and has been in a wheelchair ever since.

  • When I began riding while in h.s. (1957) , it was on a new lightweight with a top speed of about 70mph and our speed limits were in the area of 45 to 50 in semi-rural areas leading to where my job was at a grocery store. Many excursions were passed with a break-in speed of 35mph and I had some small accidents that lead me to learn what it was about. Fast forward to today and the environment and attitudes are both inflated to the point that driver ability isn't broad based and riding carries more serious risks. I spent about 20 years as a bike mechanic and now retired but when I even think of blending with today's traffic on a motorcycle, it actually scares me.

  • Swedish law demands that speeders be clocked over a set distance and their speed averaged by the on board computer. This is why these cops had to follow him until he got back on the open road, at which time his speed was averaged at 127 Km/h (135 mph). At that point, they became the arresting officers; so, although the bike was being tracked from the sky and road blocks were being erected, the arresting cops had to be there when the bike was stopped. In Sweden, it is not sufficient to simply identify the bike; its offending driver must also be identified at the scene to prove he was the one driving it. Thus, these cops were not trying to overtake the bike once the violation was verified; and the driver of this cruiser was an incredible pro who waltzed through traffic at 125 mph with no lurching, swerving, heavy-footed braking, or close calls: poetry in motion. Compare this to the local cop we got stuck behind at one point.

    @letrebuchet6098@letrebuchet609810 жыл бұрын
    • That matches with what I read about Sweden's laws about having to catch the very driver, not just identify the vehicle. It's a loophole for the crazy and just madness. In my native Germany, you may get away once or twice by denying to be the driver - but you'll soon be obliged by court order to document every single trip made with any vehicle registered in your name - including the driver's identity. I wonder how long the Swedish government and parliament have allowed this to go on...

So when a pursuit starts the driver increases the risk - swerve at oncomming traffic, swerve at pedestrians and drive on the wrong side of the highway - and the pursuit gets cancelled, rewarding the crook. In a way the safety policy causes much more danger than anything else.

  • Been looking through comments. Basically, what most people think is that the driver deserved to die cause he put everyone at danger. Then the counter argument was that the cops should have just stopped chasing. Cause he was just doing a tiny traffic violation. First, of course he doesn't deserve to die and especially not the passenger. Second, I am no expert or anything but a police chase for over an hour is not a tiny traffic violation. Also, the police did announce who they were, you can hear the sirens. When the police was just behind the motorcycle with sirens on, what they got was the finger. It was obvious that this driver was not going to stop and continue to drive recklessly and in high speeds thus putting everyone at risk and not just themselves. It is unfortunate that it ended with his life but it was fortunate no one else got injured.

The officers who saw the event live made another judgement. The point is he was well over the limit to lose his licence and put others (his passanger) in harms way. Would you like people to drive in 170km/h outside a school?

      @martuxzx@martuxzx10 жыл бұрын
    • Krumple Themal since I am German I can perfectly answer onto your statement. Yes we have the Autobahn, with parts which don't have any speed limit at all, but just like that we also have many many parts on the Autobahn which do have speed limits like e.g. 100, 80 or 60 km/h (62, 50 or 37 mph) simply for the reason of a potentially hiher crash rate, like in/nearby citys, highway intersections, slippery or windy bridges, hard curves etc., in Sweden things like (real) roadtrains are to be added. There are also Autobahn exits with a speed limit of 40 km/h (25 mph) - and that's exactly because drivers CAN'T always determine the hazard in an unknown road section or the curve. The task of the police services, the Autobahn / or in general highway maintenance authorities, the planning authorities etc is actually to prevent crashes before they happen, not just act when they have happend and then sue the guilty driver (or the weather, ...).
