Chaeryeong is a member of ITZY. She became a trainee under JYP in 2013 before debuting in 2019. Since debut she has struggled o lose weight and deal with online hate about her looks.

Makes me sad that her story is another example of how people really do treat you differently based on how you look. She deserves love now but she also deserved it from the start. She was always pretty.

No matter how thick skinned you are this stuff can affect you, especially at the age of 19. Not to mention that the time her mum posted it, she recently debuted so I’m sure being a new idol and receiving this much hate can be overwhelming to anyone.
and then to have those same losers reply to her saying "mother, it's a fact your kid is ugly." that's so uncalled for and heartbreaking. everyone knows that criticism will inevitably happen. to this extent? where does that get anyone? hasn't anyone learned from the sulli situation to keep your negative opinions on subjective topics to yourself? you can simply say you don't like her visual and move on, to sit there and say "she looks like a japanese monkey with a long nose" is fucked up and says more about you than her. she's been putting up with those comments since before she even debuted. she could have easily ended herself over that, she easily could have snapped and said some things that would've ended her career, she easily could've ended up with worse mental health issues. but she's putting up with it and hasn't caved in to the point where she's getting plastic surgery. and then the moment she gets plastic surgery y'all haters would STILL give her shit because now she's "not natural" and she's "fake". let the girl fucking breathe for crying out loud. she isn't ugly. the only ugliness i see are from the haters who feel so entitled to vocalize their shitty opinions and only little b*tch asses with that same toddler mentality will agree with them. she endured all of that and yet she is still a successful idol. at the end of the day she's the one on stage raking in cash and the haters are the ones crying behind a screen hating her for the most ridiculous shit. this type of hate will lead her to deal with severe mental health issues. we're already seeing it with how sensitive she gets over the topic of her looks, and the way she's starving herself. i genuinely can't understand how people can hate someone to this extent when we don't even know them personally. it sounds like a huge waste of time and energy. karma always finds a way. i truly hope karma kicks their asses. i don't find a lot of idols attractive but i can at least appreciate their talents and efforts, and congratulate them when they get a win or still support them through a debut if i enjoy their group. visuals aren't everything. stop thinking with your dicks and pussies and use your eyes and ears to watch and listen to their talents. she's an AMAZING dancer and has some decent vocals. that's literally all i care about in a group because i don't sit there watching music videos all day long, i listen to their music and envision the dancing. i couldn't care less if she was stick thin or morbidly obese. as long as shes happy that's all i want. she can't be happy when appeasing to the haters because she's losing herself along the way.

I literally cried while reading that letter. I can’t imagine being so excited that your daughter can achieve her dreams and then seeing hundreds of horrible comments about her appearance. That has to be so painful for her mother.
Chaeryeong is one of the few idols who have really stuck it out despite all the hate from debut. She's finally getting the recognition she deserves and it seems to reflect how outgoing and happy she appears on TV these days. Unfortunately it came at the cost of her trying to change herself physically to meet more conventional beauty standards. I can't imagine what being told I'm ugly from my childhood into adulthood would do to my mental state. Chaeryeong really fought through a lot.

i was made fun of in middle school and i'm 23 now and i still have insecurity issues even though i don't look the same i did 10 years ago. that stuff sticks for a long time, i can't imagine how badly it hurt her

There’s something really sad about a girl group based around the concept of empowerment and independence, being yourself and not caring what other people think, where all the members have had plastic surgery and almost all of them have had drastic weight fluctuations. At the end of the day they’re still victims of the K-pop industry and Korean culture in general.
Yes in the end it's just marketing. Suddenly more girl groups are having girl boss concepts but in reality nothing really has changed. They sing about empowerment but they are still held to the same beauty standards, are in a male dominated industry and were choosen because they are pretty. It's just that empowerment is "in" and sells well
thank you for pointing that out, it's the one thing that bothers me so much with ITZY. I started to like them for exactly those messages and the way they seemed to not conform to the standart for a bit (I mean the sliiiiiiiightly healthier look the members supported) and then that all got thrown out of the window and they changed themselves a lot. Obviously, the members are not to blame here, it's the fucking shitty industry. But it makes me sad ☹ It's harder for me to support them since I'm not a fan of a lot of their new releases, but I hope that will change in the future again. Kpop is really awful about these things.
I feel like she’s grown confident in her idol image over the years- and her “glow up” definetly contributed to that. I don't know of she saw them as a meal. More like other itzy members skipped breakfast and she did the same plus took some vitamins instead.
she definitely got her nutrients in since she knew she probably wouldn’t have time to eat but you definitely need some substance to keep you going which she does. she’s okay nutrient wise but the lack of fat in her meals doesn’t really give her muscles anything to eat so it just eats the fat on her body making her skinnier. the shaming definitely didn’t help in making her eat, obviously, netizens have no idea what they do.
I hope she is just getting more confident and not just eating the fake love from fans who are only praising her because she is bending to their toxic will and ideals. I also don't think she has had plastic surgery, the face and features stick out more when you are thinner.

Chaeryeong has always been beautiful and extremely hardworking. It's so sad how she finally got the recognition she's always deserved after undergoing plastic surgery and following such a strict diet. It breaks my heart how, after an idol changes physically and becomes more popular, they feel pressured to keep that image no matter the cost, just for the "fans" sake (such as what happened to Somi, Jimin, Felix, Rosé, Xiumin, IU, Wonyoung and many more). Everyone loves to say that JYP is a company that doesn't force their idols to diet or to get plastic surgery, and that might be the case. However, when they debut "natural looking" idols, or idols who are not a size 0, they get bodyshamed, they get the worst outfits and they're constantly told they're ugly by the korean public. No matter how strong and confident you think these idols are, most of them debut in their early teens, so they're extremely vulnerable and prone to developing anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc. If we want future idols to succeed without getting broken by the industry in the process, we need to stop praising literal children being debuted and we need to stop putting companies on a pedestal when they're all just looking to profit from teen audiences and teen workers. Once you stop seeing SK through pink coloured glasses, you'll realize how in desperate need of change the whole kpop industry is.
Excuse me, she didn't have any plastic surgery. It's in their contract not to undergo any of those procedures. She just lost weight and do some contouring without undergoing the knife. You do know face contouring is a thing, right?

Are you also going to tell me none of them had double eyelid surgery? The literal most popular procedure in their country? However, you can see how her nose became thinner and faces upwards ever since the mafia in the morning era (i think she got it retouched for sneakers + she got a chin shave or a jaw definition). Chaeryeong is incredibly beautiful, no one is denying that. Still, it's clear she started to get even more praise for her visuals ever since the mafia era. Don't you think that has a lot to do with the fact that it was around that time when she became thinner than ever, plus her facial features changed noticeably? It's sad but it's the truth, the korean public will always praise plastic visuals over natural ones.

It makes me so sad that people thought she was unattractive. She was the reason I got into kpop at all, I thought she was so gorgeous and compelling in not shy era, and she had this captivating unique look I hadn’t seen in a kpop idol before. She’s one of my favorite idols and she’s just so insanely talented too, she’s probably one of the best 4th gen dancers. but all of that gets thrown to the side when you aren’t conventionally pretty and adhere to societal standards.
Honestly I wish unique beauties were valued in kpop. It seems companies don’t want idols who stand out, they want idols that fit in to ridiculous beauty standards.

I love and adore the Lee sisters. Chaeryeong and Lia where the first members I noticed in ITZY. They've gone through a lot. I remember her mum defending her, people are so carelessly cruel. Kindness is free.

Chaeryeong has to be one of the few idols that looks amazing regardless of gaining or losing weight . Her proportions are insane. About her not being pretty, maybe is a cultural thing, but I always found her really pretty.

Uhmm... Ryujin maintain her hourglass figure until mafia in the morning era. The pandemic restrictions lose a bit and they had their first fanmeet during pandemic. Many Midzy was shock on her weight loss and went viral. Her thigh is slimmer and her waist is about 2-4 inch smaller that MITM Era but her hips width is maintained. It fits the KBS more so general Kpop fans like it same as I. 2 or 3 weeks after the fanmeeting they released the Loco. Ofc they praise her figure, small waight, small thigh and maintained wide hips. Sneakers era, many international fans was worried about her weight loss but for Koreans that's pretty normal. She looks like her Dalla dalla Era but with ant waist and smaller hips and bust than Dalla Dalla Era. Tbh, she looks healthier than Wonyoung.

We live in a society where talent isn't important anymore unless you're pretty. But this is the sad reality: your abilities doesn't count anymore after all the hardwork. I am so happy to see that chaeryeong is now happier and confident as before. She's been confident before till all the hate and mean words. Unfortunately, people always cared about looks. Always, in ancient times as well as in prehistory. It's just like humans biologically work. That's why I'm mad people shame others for wanting to look their best or getting surgeries.

She has always been beautiful :( I always liked her since sixteen. People never gave her a chance, so many of us were stumpy kids until we grow up. She just grew into her features, her face looks balanced because she's an adult now. Plus natural black hair always looks the best on idols.

chaeryeong was literally THE member than shined. she always caught my eye because she was an amazing performer. she has the most unique look. i loved her for who she is. those people are so cruel. she is amazing and will keep shining.
I think the reason for Chaeryeong's weight gain during Icy era was probably a result of the intense dieting the Group had to do in preparation for their debut, because everyone was super skinny during Dalla Dalla era while, Icy was the era where they all gained weight. I remember a lot of international fans praised her body for looking like a dancer's body and at first, she didn't seem to have a huge issue with it but like always, "fans" came for her and Lia's looks and it just got worse from there. I'm glad to see she has a some confidence nowadays but it's so horrible to think it was all taken away,at the beginning of her career, just because so many people disliked her for no logical reason😭
What's really sad is that most of her "unflattering" features were a result of unflattering makeup/style. In the Vlives which she wears little to no makeup, she looked much better than on stage with makeup. In the later comebacks where she get styled with more natural colors, her beauty is truly highlighted. It was the clash of colors between her orange-ish hair, and bright pink lipsticks in the early days of ITZY. Bight pink lipstick in general tends to make people's features look very flat in comparison to the lips, and it usually clashes with the natural tone of the person's skin. I personally think bright pink lipstick should be a crime because of numerous cases like this. For short, really bad color palettes. Now in the most recent comebacks, she has darker hair, which matches with practically any makeup and colors. They aren't giving her a full lip of bright pink lipstick, and now she also has much more confidence as the change is colors is finally not clashing, which just adds to highlighting her natural beauty. To think theoretically a lot of harassment could've been avoided if the stylist just knew color theory better.

It out shines the rest of the face’s features, making it look flat. Similarly with pink lipstick. Very bright colors in general do this without a full bright eyeshadow look.

It seems like they did a personal color analysis on her at some point post-debut then started implementing the results. I’ve thought the same as you for many years - she’s such a beautiful girl cursed with unflattering makeup and a vengeful makeup artist. The camera is incredibly unforgiving and all that flat bright pink lipstick was doing her no favors. I liked the reddish hair color she had back then, but they really needed to adjust their makeup & outfit coloring to flatter it; sometimes it felt like they were intentionally clashing but it just never hit right. Her current styling is so much more flattering and finally showcases her natural beauty. Btw, if you ever submit a petition for laws against bright pink lipstick crimes - hit me up, I’ll sign in a heartbeat. These makeup artists must pay for their crimes against beauty & humanity.
Never thought I'd get sad at seeing Chaeryeong on one of these videos. At this point Yeji is the only member of Itzy that stayed consistent from debut until now since Yuna was seen as "too skinny", Ryujin was seen as "thick thighs" but lost weight as well and Lia also was at her lowest during the Wannabe era. Anyway, this just comes to show that netizens will never be happy with any idol.
i personally liked that itzy has unique features. it's good to see not every idol fitting the same mold in terms of beauty standard. it makes itzy feel more relatable which fits their teen crush concept.

Korean obsession with looks according to their narrow standards is vile, I swear. I've been listening to k-pop for more than a decade, and the amount of hate I've seen being thrown at their singers for not having a certain look is insane, and it shows no signs of stopping. So k-netizens really thought that attacking Chaeryeong's mom for asking, honestly too kindly, humanity towards her child, was a good look? Disgusting behaviour. What's even worse is that in their eyes, their hate is justified because they don't like her looks... too vile. Chaeryeong has become my bias wrecker because I really admire her as a dancer, singer (which i don’t think enough people talk about how good she is at singing because of how much of a perfectionist she is at dancing) and she’s just an all around sweetheart who to me has always been beautiful. She reminds me of key from shinee. They don’t always catch your eyes at first glance but their personality will make you remember them. I don’t think she needed to lose weight. I think most of it was baby fat and just toning an already good body.
Her moms message makes me tear up honestly. I can’t imagine how hard that was for them

Chae is my bias, along with Lia (coincidently the two who's been most hated) . She has such natural charm and charisma, many probably got intrested in her through the youngi collab, and she's a very captivating performer. I'm happy she's starting to get the love she deserves, as she's been through so so much...

After looking at pics I think she did do plastic surgery but it was very subtle around her nose. But if you compare her face from around 15:55 and 18:35 her face is almost the same. I think the biggest factor was the weight loss and her maybe losing more around her cheek area as she's transitioned out of being a teenager. But like 95% still her face. Netizens are so annoying, how can you go from "visual hole" to "real life snow-white" so easily? How about she was always pretty but they insisted on putting her down because "reasons"? Do y'all know what I hated the most about ITZY's debut? Yeji's crop top that looked like a goddamn baseball had been cut up. That's it. They all looked stunning. I hope Chaeryeong enjoys her career more now and I'm glad that the debut hate (that I had no idea till today had existed) did not chase her out of the industry. Let's be honest here no one that gets to debut as a kpop idol will be "truly" ugly. An "ugly" idol is still like probably in the top 10% of looks. Netizen standards are cray.

Ngl as a person with anorexia, this is exactly it. Always worrying about calories, looking at the shape of your stomach after eating ( or just regular bloating ), picking at food, and even not realizing you're eating and accidentally eating too much. I hate to see her go through this, but its like this for so many idols. I wish she'd treat herself better, we all love her sm.

Chaeryeong is really beautiful. She is my favorite idol. I am sure that I will always support her because she is a good person and will not behave badly. I hate it when people praise Chaeryeong's visuals after she lost weight. She was always beautiful. I met her in the itzy not shy era and damn she was perfect. I don't understand those who call her ugly. She's not ugly and even if she were she wouldn't change that, she was born with this body. Looks aren't the only reason to become an idol. She can sing, she dances great, she can write songs, she can rap and her voice is soft and soothing.

It’s crazy that out of all the ITZY members, it’s Yuna who had a huge weight loss scandal! When Chaeryeong and Ryujin clearly have the most inconsistent relationship with food/dieting. It just goes to show, people judge “health” only on outward appearances and not on lifestyle or actions. Yuna is thinner so they just assumed she must be st@rving herself… anyway I hope you’ll do one for Ryujin too

personally, i think she is a case of a nose job done right. a good nose job should be subtle and avoid disturbing facial balance, accentuating the other features of the face, which has clearly been achieved here. it's clear how her face changes with weight gain/loss; you definitely cannot attribute her glow up in sneakers era to weight loss alone. she might have gotten something else worked on too, but her nose is the most obvious. she was stunning both before and after surgery, but the biggest change has been her confidence, and that makes a huge positive impact on her public persona. i hope she was able to eliminate any complex she may have had about her looks through this and, if not, can get the counseling she needs, since there are often many underlying psychological issues that come with being criticized so cruelly by the public. that is, of course, assuming this is a procedure she wanted and that her company didn't force it upon her (which is an assumption i'm making mostly due to her confidence boost).
speaking from experience, Chaeryeong gets prettier the more you look at her. she has that special charm about her and once ICY came out I was totally smitten with her. knowing her personality mixed with her looks makes her absolutely stunning to me. she's so beautiful both inside and out, I started crying watching this video bc I followed her suffering. she definitely has gained a lot of confidence, which I want to thank MIDZY for. also, I don't see any ps on her. her nose is the same, so are her eyes. she lost a lot of weight so her face is slimmer but I don't know where people think she's gotten surgery.

i got crying watching the video. having seen how much struggle these little girls had in the past is really sad. i noticed Chaeryoung in 2019 and very liked her among other members(im not saying that i hate them or smtg) she really stood out to me by her dance skills, strong and fit dancer’s body and appearance and her whole sweet and kind but at the same time hardworking personality. i really love and respect this girl for everything she does and wish her the best.
I sincerely hope that she can find a way to completely detach her self-worth from what kpop stans think. I think only very few kpop idols are able to do this, obviously through no fault of their own, but those are usually the more happier ones. And I really wish Chaeryeong happiness. Seeing Chae get absolutely TORN apart for years for the way she looks and then people suddenly LOVING her this year after she lost weight ( and most likely had some plastic surgery procedures) makes my blood boil. I struggled with my weight and look so much when I was younger. She’s undeniably pretty and beautiful, but I can tell that her mindset is I-am-not-good-enough. People react to energy. She doesn’t have to try to improve her look any more, but instead she should work on her self-image/self-esteem. Having been compared with her sister so much when such a young age, I understand why she ended up having not-very-confident personality． Been there, done that. I just want to give her a big hug．😢

It's absolutely deplorable that Chearyeong had to get a new face and go from having an amazing, athletic body to walking around looking emaciated for Koreans to consider her pretty. I never paid attention to Itzy until Not Shy, and I remember immediately being drawn to her because of how different her body was compared to the other members....she had such amazing thighs, and as a gymnast, I definitely appreciated seeing the main dancer actually be built like one. There's no way that she's not suffering from some severe mental health issues as a result of all the stress surrounding her lack of self-esteem, dieting struggles, and her trying to appease the brain-dead masses based on their twisted standard of beauty. I really hope she doesn't change herself anymore than she already has..
