I use mine daily!!! I can catch a swarm in mid air if I can get the bucket in the middle of the swarm with a little Swarm Commander. I can’t thank you enough for this idea!!!

The day after seeing this, I had a swarm in a tree in my backyard! I used an empty, black plastic, nursery pot. It’s very lightweight. I duct taped it to a telescoping painters stick. I whacked the limb with the swarm and they fell directly into the bucket. So easy and quick. I held the bucket near the limb for about 5-15 minutes, for the bees that were flying around, and they went into the bucket. Thank you so much for such an informative and well done video. Also, Since then I had another swarm in the same tree. So the throne was used twice.

Finally- finally some ingenuity. I’ve been watching these bee removal videos for one week now, first person to utilize creativity. I think when e hit the limb, the bees dropped a small amount of distance. The mesh provides familiarity. They don’t even know what happened. As long as the queen stays in there he’s good to go.
I am planning on changing to the wire basket like you used. The swarm arrived before I could get it! You have a real gift for teaching. God Bless You.

I just caught a swarm today using the same method but my bucket was on a swinging arm so that when it’s brought down to dump you can swing it like a pail. A fellow lady beekeeper welded the arm to fit around the bucket and a bit deeper than the 5 gallon bucket so that it could freely swing.
Nice work! I'm a big fan of things that make work safer, and not having to climb a ladder for a high swarm is a major improvement!

Yay, I made one like this a couple of years ago and have saved me a lot of dangerous, sweaty climbing. Great tip from you is to keep the bucket up to attract all those bees scattered around after knocking the swarm down - I'll try that next time for sure, thanks! Greetings from Norway.

first part "yeah we get it." Once you started the demonstration it got better and the basket thing got was really good.
I was a bit dubious at first but after seeing how good the bees were in your catcher i must admit its simplicity in design makes it truly genius. The bees dont get agrivated because they stay in a neat little ball. Have seen some bee keepers use a veiled straw hat on low hanging limbs in the past and that worked very well too so I should not have been a doubter. Sorry about that. Great video too. Thank you. This set up is a game changer for catching swarms. I have a subscriber that will stand in his be yard whil swarm is issueing and he stands pole up with swarm commander on can and swarms will settle on it. He has caught about 5 this way.

@randallcarter-carterhillho2277 so the swarm I caught and put in the hive left and went back into the tree. So I used this idea the next time. They are now safe and at my house. One question, it was easier to get them, but it was much harder to get them out. They clung to the mesh. Any suggestions?

Fascinating. I remember your video when you showed how this device was made. I immediately collected all the parts to put one together. I haven’t needed it yet but it’s ready for when I do. I’ve caught two swarms since that time but they were both on low branches. The first about a foot off the ground and the second about four feet. The second was just last Sunday. It was very cold and they spent Saturday night outside. I’m not sure if they will make it but at least I got them in a box before it started snowing Sunday night. Monday morning I put a feeder on them. Fingers crossed they will be okay. Time will tell.
I got down to the bee yard today. They have consumed half a quart of feed and they were bringing in full pollen baskets. I think they’re going to be fine.

Great catch. I have a 5 gallon bucket made the same way with parts of it cut out and i have screen around it. If you get them in the bucket the rest will fly to it. But I do like the one you have better. ❤️🐝

Wow! You can HEAR the difference as the bees returned to the bucket!
I love the mesh garbage can idea but I don't think you need the paint roller section. Just fasten the pole directly to the side of the can (or bucket). This is what I do with my current bucket using some small ratchet straps and zip ties. It makes the reach a foot or two shorter and makes transporting a little more cumbersome, but the strength of the whole thing is way better.
Another option, you cut some holes in the top & bottom sides of the bucket, you can feed a hoop clamp through it, and just tighten the rod to the bucket with a screwdriver.
Took your advise a while back and have the same setup. I've used it several times this year and it works great!!! The last extension is pretty useless unless working almost vertical. The leverage gets the best of you without some support as you said. Another great common sense video. Thanks Randall!!

I made one using 2 pieces of pictures type, one lightly smaller than the other that telescopes. Bolted to a 5 gallon bucket but I really like the lighter weight mesh bucket. I'll be looking for one! Thanks.

what you've shared will make a real difference in peoples attempts to successfully mine for honey and remain respectful of the bees that make it...not to mention all the time saved . more time to spend enjoying the process and the product.. I buy my honey and I don't dance with bees but I appreciate you and frankly the bees here in southern California would too..I read lately they are starving and pissed off...the fancy flowers people are planting in the yards are primarily for adorment..and not nutritious enough to sustain a hive.. plus... it's not legal to keep bees in most the cities that allow you to water non native plants .. funny cause the golfers seem to stay liquidated.. and they all call the girls honey

Excellent video. Discovered yours in searching for blue green horizons queen throne bucket for a new bee keeper. I do like you design. My question is why do you think there may be a virgin queen in that swarm. I thought conventional wisdom says the original queen leaves with the swarm. The queen excluder on the the bottom board is a trick I’d not heard of in my mere 12 years. I caught 3 swarms in one days but 2 left and I wish I had known of the queen excluder trick.
The queen in this swarm was not a virgin. The same colony swarmed about 9 days later and I caught The swarm 30 feet up. It likely had a virgin queen.
I wish I had seen this a couple of weeks ago. Caught a swarm last week just outside my apiary. Took me half an hour to carefully cut the branches around the swarm and get them into the box while crawling under the hedgerow. Annoyingly, I have one of these waste bins in the shed and moved it to get the box. Just never thought to use it.
Hey man, a lot of good ideas here. One word of caution, if you are using a plastic outer cover, you might want to put the ratchet strap under it. I broke an outer cover before I realized this to be a problem. I strap the inner cover and carry the outer cover home separately (if it is plastic). Good video, thanks.

Great instructions…..I have never been able to find an equivalent wire mess basket like that….I’ve tried the internet….and even flea markets….but I’ve not found anyone that makes them anymore….
They are on amazon. I just searched metal mesh garbage cans. I say some at menards last summer as well. They might not have them any more though.

There where still bees coming into land as you walked away to show the camera, You have the Queen before 12 minutes for sure. That is way kinder and safer to catch the bees. Hardly any stress at all. My grandad uses Dark Brood Comb on a pole for high ups that he cannot reach. Your idea might even be better. I do a lot of swarm rescues so I am going to make one of these and compare it to some of our contraptions. The only thing I would do different is have that bucket on strong light weight tripod just for stability in difficult to reach places like if you had an angle to reach out etc Great video! and great job there.

Randall is that bucket about the same size as a 5 gallon bucket?
It is slightly smaller. I would guess it would hold apx 3.5- 4 gallons. Search metal mesh garbage can on amazon and you should see them.

Goodday sir. You're opinion on a few aspects will be appreciated. 1. The queen excluder at the bottom. Is it to prevent the swarm leaving,because the queen can't get through? 2. I would have liked to see the broad you're using. I am of the opinion in an attempt to prevent pests I use wax foundation and then feeding the bees within the box to make up for the lack of broad. For this I use the " Genius lid" With this lid I can see the proceedings in the hive without opening it. 3. You take the hive away before dark. What about the bees returning from scouting to find nothing. Thanks for this demonstration. Cobus🐋
1. Yes 2. I am not sure what broad is. Please clarify. 3. Overall I find it best to move about 45 mins to an hour after swarm capture. Sure there will be 20-30 bees left but they will find a place to go. If I waited til dark to move it they would have oriented and worked about 7 hours that day and then the field force would want to go back to where I left the hive til dark.
Thanks for the response. By "broad" I am referring to the foundation you use and the comb build by other bees. 3. You're explanation makes sense. How for did you take the hive from where you caught it? If you take it a few kilometers away, then the bees will orientate again and stay there. If not far from where you caught it, then you are quite right. The way you handled the bees is an eye opener. I am from South Africa and I am sure the local swarms will not take this in their stride. @@jljjoubert3611 3. I moved the colony about 30 meters. If I was going to move them more more than about 3 kiloneters away I would have waited til dark and moved them. I started years ago using wax doundations but I now use plastic for the durability and ease of assembly.
