The Pacific Ghost - Conserving Black-Tailed Deer in Oregon
The Pacific Ghost showcases how The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) and Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) take on the challenges of conserving black-tailed deer in Oregon.
In 2022, Leupold partnered with MDF to host the first-ever Black-Tailed Deer Summit at Leupold's headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. The Summit allowed an extensive group of biologists, state fish and game department employees, key non-profit organizations, and regional Federal program leads from across the region to visit typical black-tailed deer habitat, see an active habitat project, and observe new techniques in deer population management. Attendees shared information important to their own work but also explored opportunities for better collaboration. The event concluded with a discussion of the next steps that MDF can implement to help address the most pressing needs of black-tailed deer in specific regions.

Having met Don and DeWaine, and worked with Brian with ODFW, I can tell you these professionals are working hard to create the best outcomes for wildlife in Oregon. I'm glad to see OHA and MDF working with them to learn about black-tailed deer and modern challenges to a thriving population. This is one example of why I'm a member of both organizations. Great film, content and message. We all need to come together to help this cause. As a lifetime Oregonian; hunter, fisherman and general recreationalist; the habitat for the black tail has changed drastically since the 80’s. Some point fingers at politics, environmentalist, private land owners, urban growth and many other factors but it all comes down to each us individually and what we are willing to do or are not do. It’s time to step up and do our part in this process. Join, let your voice be heard and participate in your local favorite organization: OHA, RMEF, Mule deer foundation, Oregon steel headers, ducks unlimited, etc.. The list is long and they need you and we need them!

Great video! There is nothing more I enjoy thank hunting blacktail they are an amazing animal. Every year I hunt them and scout for them I learn something new about them. The way they get around in the forest where I hunt here in oregon is absolutely amazing.
As a volunteer for a non-profit (NDA) I certainly appreciate all the help from MDF along with ODFW to look at these conservation and research efforts of the beautiful Blacktail. Leupold has been my glass of choice the last 6-7 years or so and so glad I made the move. Glad to see them collaborating on a grassroots level for such a great cause. I’ve had the pleasure of hunting Black-Tailed deer in SE Alaska several times, and what an incredible experience and animal! These deer have to be one of the most resilient and adaptable species of creatures on the planet given the topography and elements they deal with and ultimately thrive in. Great film, Black tail are a unique species of mule deer. When I lived in Lake Wildwood in Northern California we had a lot of them wandering around our house. Beautiful Deer.

My first big game animal was a black tail deer on my youth first time hunter tag and that is the reason why I love hunting and the outdoors. So everyone’s conservation efforts to help sustain the deer and elk populations is a huge deal to me so that others may experience what I did and become so passionate about hunting and the outdoors.

Inspirational message from you all to this PNW transplant who grew up chasing Western Pennsylvania Whitetails and dreaming of hunting the first deer season with dad's mid 1960's Savage Model 110 mounted with a fine Leupold scope on top! Still the sharpest tool in the family my little brother says... Western Habitat has changed since the early 1990s.

Thanks Leupold for this telling video. I'm still rather new to hunting myself and have really only learned of Leupold in the last three years. Went on my first hunt ever just three days ago, turkey with one of my favorite people. We didn't get anything, but had managed to successfully call in three birds, two Jake's and a hen to around 50-ish yards, before our decoy blew over and spooked them. Not bad for two turkey rookies. We had a blast and are definitely heading back out next week for another chance till we either tag out or the tags expire. Y'all have built yourselves a great company and I love your gear. I'm proud to represent and help sell people on what y'all make. Looking forward to hunting more and more species in the coming years.
