Check out my day time job☝️
So….. hello and welcome to my Austin project! I absolutely love pre war cars and have wanted one for such a long time and now I finally have one! I’m really looking forward to going through the process with you the viewer and passing on my knowledge of metalwork as well as asking you for your help in return!
Stick around it’s going to be a good one 👨🏭
As an owner of two 1930 specials and a 1933 saloon, I will follow your build. When I built my wooden bodied boat tail special in the 70s I used the film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" as inspiration. Plus being a carpenter helped with the decision! My other special has a simple two seater body built in the 50s. The student who built it sold it to a late friend of mine. He told her that he used aluminium from a spitfire, the WW2 fighter, not the car. She bought the car in 1958, her first car. She bought the 1933 saloon in 1961, her second car. She left them to me in her will. I have subscribed.
What a lovely story. Thank you for subscribing
Here's me casually looking for Austin 7 Special content and this bloke starts the first video in his series with some Professor Kliq! 10/10 music choice, have subscribed as a result.
Haven’t got a clue what professor Kliq is 😂
@@Metal_shaper_tomHe's the musician that did your intro song! That specific song is Pangea, his stuff from that albumn and a few others from the 2010s are wicked.
Thanks for sharing your build Tom, I have the popcorn and beers at the ready, bring it on chap
Sounds like a plan!! Wish I could get the videos out quicker!
@@Metal_shaper_tom quality over quantity Tom
Great start, I love the wooden bits already, nice and clean. 😅
May have to redesign them bit as they’re not bloody comfortable 😂
One of the first things you need to do is change the rake of the steering column for special building. See if you can get a copy of Austin 7 Companion published by 750 Motor Club, the Austin 7 builders bible. I have built 2 specials, one of which was a Roach RTC which featured on the Roach brochure. The publication has also articles on fitting the Reliant power train.
Hello john. Thank you for the advice . Silly question are you John gloved the well known coach builder?
@@Metal_shaper_tom Afraid not. I have built two A7 specials over the years. One of which was a Roach RTC which they featured on their brochure for sometime
Just what I need, some body fab inspiration for my Austin project!
Hopefully it helps 👍
New subscriber. I love these British cars! Looking forward to this build.
Welcome aboard 👍
Indeed, Good Luck on this build. I’ll be following with great interest.. with a name like mine, how could I not?!😃 Les
Interesting you have a 36 ruby chassis. Same year as my ruby, I've just finished all the moving items. However the body is more that a little tired. Looking forward to this build. All the best!
Hi Colin sorry for the late response I’ve only just seen your comment 👍 36 was obviously a quality year 👌
Looking forward to following this process..I'm in the same boat so be interesting to watch mate
Just got a reliant frame to start my trike build..hopefully...Will follow this build for sure
Thanks Steven. Hopefully I can start this very soon
What no vroom vroom noises ? cmon Tom. Good luck buddy looking forward to this one.
Ha 😂 a golden opportunity missed!
Looking forward to it all!
Cheers bob . I can’t wait to start it.
Good Luck, it will be an interesting journey
Cheers Jim 👍
Ok I’ll subscribe I’m curious what it going to look like. Your other work is amazing. Thanks
Glad to see a new project in the works! This is going to be epic! 🤙
Hopefully 🤞. I’ve got some cool ideas
Good luck ! 🙂
Thank you👍
Cool project. Can't wait to see what sort of body style you are going for. Look forward to future episodes.
Think 1930’s Grand Prix car 🤔🤔🤔
Hi Tom. I’d happily help you with the mechanicals if needed
Very kind of you Jamie. Thanks 👍
Looking forward to watching this project come together. Too cool.
Thanks Paul.
nice make sure I get all my notifications
Thanks bill. Hopefully once I get going on it I can make them on a regular basis
Power to weight, keep it as LIGHT as POSSIBLE!!!!!! The Austin is Not known for HP!!
It will be very light and with the reliant engine tuned to 50hp+ it’s better that the standard 10 the Austin comes with. Should be pretty nippy 🤞
Oooo, a new Binky
Lol 😂 I wish!!!
Brilliant project! Can’t wait to see it develop. One thing I’d do early on is get the right tyres on it so that they don’t mislead your thinking about mudguard size, diameter and form. Good luck! Cheers Will
Thanks for the advice. My plan is to have it open wheeled
Good luck be great to see how you tackle this. I have been building my A7 for a while, also with an 850 Reliant engine and box. Took me a long while to position them. The biggest challenge I've found was getting the pedals to move through a sensible sweep. Happy to share that with you. Cliff
Hey cliff I’ve sent you a message on Facebook 👍
Looking forward to seeing this, I'm sure it's going to be special and elegant. There will be plenty of advice along the way, not all of it welcome! A few things to keep in mind, when those points are reached, that can get forgotten about. Consider the travel limits of your suspension when positioning the engine and transmission, particularly with respect to the propshaft angles. Keep in the back of your mind how you will carry out maintenance, access to filters, carburetor, plugs etc. Airflow within the engine compartment is important, cooling air has to have somewhere to go after it passes over the radiator / oil cooler and carburetors prefer a clean cool flow. Leave enough "slack" in your wiring to allow for movement and disconnecting components, secure the loom to minimise any chance of road debris catching it and add extra protection at the securing points. Plan your fuel lines as straight as possible, it's always tempting to bend it around an obstacle and air locks are a pain to clear. That's plenty to be going on with.
Thank you Niall. I real appreciate your message. You’ve raised some great points that I’ll definitely take on board . This is the type of help I was after . Thank you 👍
Really looking forward to seeing this come together Tom, amazing talent that you have will, I'm sure make this epic!
Thank you. I cant wait to start it and show some of my skills off on the body. Do got a really nice design ( in my head) that I want to achieve.
Good luck! Am in the middle of trying to put a Reliant 850 into an Austin 7 special that was Austin 7 powered. Getting that steering lower is your first task.
Great to see the project getting started and with your skill, it will doubtless be an amazing build!
Thanks Chris. I’ve got a goo feeling about this. Hopefully the viewers like my idea 🤞
Good luck. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Thank you . Can’t wait to start making it
This is going to be a fun project to follow!
Hopefully Sean 👍
Hi Tom, this is great news, I’m going to start my own Austin seven project in the winter so it’ll be great to follow along and hopefully pinch a few ideas.👍
I forgot to mention I’ll be charging for every idea pinched 😂 good luck with your build!! 👍
Good luck Tom - no doubt you’ve reached out to the A7 clubs; I’m sure that my buddy who has made a few bodies has said they are very helpful. Looking forward to seeing this one develop - thanks for sharing the journey with us 👍
Hi ian. I haven’t reached out to any yet. I’ve got a friend who’s in a a7 club advising me at the moment but I definitely will reach out when I get stuck
Talent and time, this will be amazing!
Thanks Richard. Hopefully it will turn out as good as i imagine it.
Hi Tom - might be worth bouncing a few ideas around with Trev from Trev's Blog, as you're both into the intricancies of metal fettling. 👍👍
I know him well and he’s only lives 2 minute walk away from me. We chat quite often about it all.
this should be fun! if you're open to suggestions, you might consider a decent bike engine. or anything really (alfa boxer four? V4 ford/saab? both nice & compact), reliant engines seem to be the bog standard go-to for a lot of austin 7 builds. whatever bakes your cake, it'll all be fun.
Personally a bike engine in this with the look I’m after doesn’t go and in my opinion a bit chav. From what I know the engines you have suggested would still be quite big and require chopping quite a bit of the chassis and in this build I don’t won’t to go down that road . May do in the future of another build. I think the reliant is Just a proven formula. 65hp on something that’s about 350kg will still be pretty nippy and with my mechanical knowledge this is all I can handle to start with.
@@Metal_shaper_tom chav, lol. all makes sense, it'll be great whatever you do.
good luck mush 😎
I am shure you have the right contacts to ask for help on the mechanics! It will all work out!
Thanks . Yeah I’ve got a good group who I work with that can help if I get stuck and for everything else there’s google and KZhead! 😃
Looking forward to this! Good luck!
Thank you ray!
Good luck my friend, I've wanted to build a pre war special for years and one day I must scratch that itch but in the meantime I'll watch you doing it first!
Watch me struggle more like 😂 Thanks 👍
@@Metal_shaper_tom struggle or smash it, either will be great to see! Though the body shouldn't be an issue for you! Can't wait to see which way you go with the styling, seen many sevens, some that look very beautiful and others that are more functional!
Thinking of building something with a more affordable concept.. like a Robin chassis
All the best on this project!!!
Thank you 👍
man you got the talent..go the austin 7 special
Thank you 👍
Best of luck, Tom. I saw your cameo on Trev's channel. ;) I hope you have a fun time with this.
Thanks . Yeah I know trev well and my mate wanted to meet him so I took him over .still can’t believe it I made it on trevs blog 😂
All you big stars gather together. :)
@@Joe.Doucette I’ve know him for about 9 years. Lives 2 minutes away from me . Small world
Good luck with the project.
Thank you Gerry
Really looking forward to your design for the body - and how you approach it. Will you make sketches or go straight to mocking things up with card etc?
I have a few sketches but need to do one to scale and a bit more accurate.I’ll then make a wire form buck and tweak it to suit visually. …. Well that the plan 😬
Is there an ep2 yet ?
Hopefully Friday 🤞🤞🤞I’ve already started filming episodes 3 so now I’m on it more there be a lot more regular
Does the chassis have a V5 or are you going to have to register it with the DVLA? Looking forward to watching this.
I have a v5 so a special body should ok 👍
@@Metal_shaper_tom well that's good news, it should make getting it road legal so much easier.
so looking forward to seeing your design, if you need any help with mechanical advice dont hesitate to drop me a msg and if you want later in the build ill happily come down and give you a hand make sure everything is spot on
Thanks Danny that’s really appreciated. Yeah that would make a good episode you coming down and doing a few bits
@@Metal_shaper_tom just let me know when buddy
Have you seen Oak swamp he may have an engine All the best peter
I speak to Bryan quite often. Nice bloke
Have you considered a BMW brick engine or Suzuki 16v?
I haven’t no but that’s not to say I wouldn’t use something different on the next project 👍
Good luck take a look at my build here on youtube to give you some ideas ..
Thanks . Yeah I’ve watched a couple of your videos already 👍
Should put a Motorcycle Engine in it.
Not my type of thing that.
@@Metal_shaper_tom , fair enough, i just thought room wise it was a good alternative, looking forward to the build.
@@65cj55 room wise it’s great but I just find it a bit cheesy where as a reliant engine is kind of the done thing
@@Metal_shaper_tom Oh right, i don't know a lot about them, didn't reliant build those 3 Wheel Cars ? i thought they were basically Motorcycles...
Yeah you can drive them on a bike licence. The original reliant Engine was a copy of the Austin engine so they have a connection and a lot of hillcimb car use them because you can get 60+hp from them instigated 10hp from the original
How is it going 2 months down the road.
Just about to start it this week! Been really busy finishing something off.
Think my previous comment got deleted. I have a Reliant 850 motor and box I don't need, from another A7 special. Drop me a line if you like
Oh wow 😯 I haven’t had a comment pop up for you so I’m not sure what’s happened. My number is 07540744405 if you want to send me a message and we can chat about it . Thanks 👍
Talk to alba austins
Thanks . Just looked them up!
Why 850 reliant? Austin 7 engines much more common and much more authentic! (btw… check my latest vid on Austin 7 special…)
Down to money. I can buy a running 850 with gearbox for £500. I could spend that and more on a non working Austin engine and the then spend at least 2k having it built. I’m not bothered by authenticity or competing in vscc. I’d rather a good looking car with a reliable more modern engine that I can go and enjoy. Just my opinion. My mods will be reversible in case I’m fortunate enough to get an Austin engine later on .
@@Metal_shaper_tom that's fair enough Tom 🙂. Looking forward to following the build!
