4 NOMADS Tell: What They WISH THEY KNEW Before Hitting the Road. RV and vanlife fear, safety, & solo
Before I hit the road as a full-time RV solo female traveler, I had a TON of questions! Today, I'll ask FOUR nomads my top questions and they each give a very different answer.
We talk about:
BOONDOCKING
RV AND VAN TRIP PLANNING
FEAR
FAMILY AND FRIENDS OPINIOINS
ABOUT THE JOY THEY'VE FOUND
& their ADVICE for anyone else who wants to experience this kind of life.

THANK YOU. I am supposed to be out of my house May 1. I need everything moved into my coach by then. Plus I need a tow bar and I want to make sure I have enough solar for AC. (I have 1000 on the roof so far.) Because I'm taking all seven fur babies with me. So every once in awhile I think I'll regret doing this, or I won't be able to do this. Immediately I think, "Yes I can! Robin's doing it!" So thank you and ❤.
im starting in a few weeks. I really needed this. you're real AF. When I tell you I needed to hear these women speak. I really hope I get to meet you some day. im not sure why but I have tears in my eyes. im truly inspired and maybe I'm ready!!!! YOU'RE NOT HOMELESS YOUR FREE AMEN!!! Every single woman this are FN ROCKSTARS!!!
I'm so excited and happy for you.
Enjoy your journey!!
I feel exactly the same way. I NEEDED this video!
HAPPY TRAVELING!😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
Congratulations ‼️👏🏼🥰
Leaving April 15th Tax Day LOL = Full time at 68. ❤ Excited!
👏🍻
Are you ready? Exciting time, I'm jealous 😊
I've just watched your video, I thought the questions you asked were just right, and the answers you got from the four ladies were excellent. I'm an 80 yr old man who has camped all my life, but never as a full timer. I have a 1978 Chevy van that was sold new as a built out camper, which I have remodeled so that it now fits my requirements. It has been totally rebuilt mechanically. New engine, and completely new everything under the vehicle, from exhaust, to tie rod ends. As soon as the weather warms up here in NM, I'll be hitting the road. Not as a full timer, but with the blessings of my wife of 52 years. mike
So happy for the both of you. May husband and I have 1 more year to go and then we're out of here too; in a totally rebuilt 1962 GMC 1 ton 4x4 pickup that we had our 1st date in 42 years ago :).
You’re not homeless, you’re houseless 😉👍. I’ve been doing this since 2004. Did it and never looked back. Nice post. Great info!
Would love to see a tour of all 4 rigs!
One of my favorite movies is The Long Long Trailer a comedy with Lucy and Ricky ( Desi Arnez and Lucile Ball. A must watch for laughs before during and after their road trip ...
All those family members telling him how to back up was hilarious!
I remember it - so funny - just watched it within the last year!
I had one of those long trailers. Had to have a guy haul it off cause wildlife had moved in as it was parked at a high elevation and not accessible in the winter. 😢........
Me too! I have friends bring me rocks instead of gifts.
"...kinda looks like a hostage video..." 🤣 Well, the ladies all look happy to me! Thanks Everyone.
Robin, this week's video really resonated with me because my partner and I sold our home 2 years ago and took off in a 10-year-old class C for full-time adventuring as I began my retirement. It's a life that is a dream fulfillment for both of us. We're beginning our 3rd year and still loving it. Anyway, these ladies' experiences mirrored ours. This was a good one! Thank you!
Lesson #11,420 that the world feels safer to a man. I love that y'all overcome the fears, find workarounds, hate that the fears are legit.
Not necessarily. I have fears but my husband also has his own fears.
Do men look into the back of their car before they get in?
@@user-ff8vo1se8v I used to own a car that I purposefully junked up in back. Ain't no one wanted to go into that car and hide out! I only did that because I couldn't afford parking where I worked and had to park my car nearer a not so good neighbourhood. 🤣 I don't do that anymore.
I plan on renting a few different kinds of trailers before buying one.
One of the best, most informative videos I’ve ever watched. These folks have definitely discovered the ultimate adventure.
I am ridiculously beyond excited to see Robin interview another KZheadr I follow, Deb! Poor Deb, I just stalked her at FMCA so she could autograph my hat! 🤗 Thanks for a great video everyone --Eileen
lol! Hi Eileen! It was so nice to meet you!!
Each one of these women was a gem. I'd like to see more of them when you cross paths again.
I going to do this once I retire. My family has been helping me collect things to help.
"Shop at home first." Good job
I just started out Saturday 3-23-24 and there is no overnight parking in my rural area, no water, and the rest areas are far apart. First day my trailer was way overloaded and swayed at 30 mph, then I off loaded alot, it then swayed at 42mph, I just off loaded more so hoping it's better, also I changed hitch recievers and instead of a straight which made the back too low, I switched back to the original, even though the back sits higher off the ground than the front it seems ok at 30mph, I won't know until tonight when I go back to the rest area I'm close too. I may have to buy a shallow drop reciever. Monday I get a free gym membership with my medical advantage plan. I found my first 24 hr laundry and an open day use area I'm hanging at. But I want to go fishing at different places throughout washington state over years. But I wanted to cry 20 minutes after I left.
Sounds like u need sway bars, if you're swaying that easily. 🍻
Hang in there - you will figure it out! ❤
yay, you got started. That is always the hardest thing to do is take the original leap. You can buy a few 1 gallon water jugs and re fill them at your day use park or gas station. Great to hear that you got a free gym membership. That sounds fun I need to do that myself. How long is your trailer? Congratulations on your new adventure.
@@tennesseeterri I bought 5-1 gallon jugs of water over 1 week time, I keep refilling 2 T a time when I go to the gym for my shower and workout. I've been sleeping at a rest area and spend days in day use areas, I've started listing stuff from my storage for sale,. My biggest $$$ is gas and laundry.
I wish I could get over needing a base to rest, relax, not feel out in public, fear of being pulled over by overzealous cops, or brake checked by insurance scammers. Also, my Straight talk phone has just plain died twice. Lost all my photos Google, FB, lost my PIN. DON'T LOSE YOUR INFO AND WRITE ALL CONTACTS NUMBERS DOWN!
This was great! I wanted to go do this at retirement but had changed my mind due to pets. I bought a condo & overextended myself $ wise & have had unexpected repairs. Possibly needing flood insurance. I feel tied down. Rethinking my retirement. Thank you again for such a great interview.
Sell your condo ASAP while you still can. If it is putting you under water, it will not get better with time. HOA fees always got up.
@@Roobah I just spent more than I should have.
I took all my pets with me when I began fulltime RVing 17 years ago. My 80 yr. young camping friend has been fulltime in her minivan for yrs with her 3 dogs.
I travel in a 25’ motor home with four parrots and two small dogs.
This is me - got my 🚐 down sizing AGAIN Now; I need whole catalytic converter. - $ 2,800.00 😮 Mom in nursing 🏠 June will be "101" I still have her dog which I could take her with me -- Great Watch Dog I also still have my Horse "CISCO" ----- It is so Hard to leave this all behind Mom wants to go with me BUT ; her health is declining Maybe by time I get to Go I will really have my stuff dwindled down to nothing :
Wow that was great and so informative. Robin that group has such a span of ages it was just great thank you ever so much.
👍🏻 mountain safety … two paperback books : Eastern Mountain Directory & Western Mountain Directory. Detailed information about all mountain roads from BOTH directions. Saved my butt.
Thank you I will purchase them ..
@islandwitt1 How did they help you?
I loved this conversation! Thank you all for sharing your stories, experiences and wisdom. Safe travels. ❤️
Thanks for this, Robin! Your content, over the years, has inspired me and given me the confidence to live my dreams. I live and travel in a truck camper and have also started a KZhead channel. Thank you for all that you do!
I follow you, your videos are great!!!
my nomad dreams are for now a pipe dream...my hubby does not like traveling so we just go camping in short spirts, but I can guarantee that when he passes, I am traveling to places I never seen no matter how old I am if it happens. :)
My best friend’s mother did that, when her husband died she started traveling. My mother’s idea of a summer vacation was sitting on a beach & a cabin. She married my dad who liked to travel, & she went tent camping with him & us girls (5) until we stopped going as teens then they bought a Bolar trailer & continued until they were in their 70s then did hotels. Because she went, she got to see most of North America, New Zealand & a highlight for her was watching a Formula 1 race in Monaco. But more spouses are like your’s & my friend’s father.
One of your best. Each lady has such wisdom. Thank you. I'm temporarily grounded because of mechanical issues. But I've got my eye on being back on the road living the life I love very, very soon.
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen. I smiled through the whole thing. Knowledge is one of the best gifts one could give. Thanks so much for putting this out there and thanks to the ladies who took the time to answer your great questions. 😊
We've road tripped all our adult lives. I can list on 2 hands the states I've not been to. Frequently nervous and fearful before the trip. Always, 40 miles down the road, all fears and nervousness disappear. The mind can play havoc on a person's peace and serenity. Once on the road, all worries disappear. The USA and Canada have an infinite amount of interesting and scenic locations to explore.
Great video! The amount of time for planning and chores cannot be understated. I am in the pre-planning stage of car camping. Fortunately I quickly realized how much of my days would be dedicated to searching for parking spots, planning stops for food/cooking, bathing, and other chores. Drive time between places reduced from 4-6 hours to 2-3 hours.
Great interview. Thanks for letting them talk without interrupting.
Just Wow! This was so informative. Thank you to all of the ladies that took the time for an HONEST SHARE! Robin, as usual, you are Point On with your videos. It will take me a while to soak up all of this information and use it to my advantage. Just great, all of you! xoxoxo
Driving the highways - dodging semis, pickup trucks & hellcats is the worst part!
I'm a little bit of a fraidy-cat, so if I'm driving I'm trying to take more of the back roads and less of the super highways.
So real and SO INSPIRING!! I'm putting my house on the market in May and hitting the road in Wanda, my C class RV. I've been nervous with most of the same fears you ladies mentioned. If you can do this then so can I! Thank you for doing this video!🥰
I admire your creative trend, this was so much fun, informative and encouraging. Great gathering of ladies.
I had a smile on my face the whole time! Loved hearing from all of you rambling roses!
Well shucks, that went by way too quick!!! I could have listened for another couple of hours!! Thanks That was enlightening information and very helpful dialogue. Sometimes I feel like it’s just never going to happen for me, but listening to to each lady’s perspective encouraged me not to give up on my dreams. Thanks for sharing this with us, Robin! Looking forward to next time. Happy Travels!!! 👋😃
The fear in my head was exaggerated. The freedom is incredible
I’m so envious! I’m in full time year #4 but work full time to pay the bills. Not many work skills but a lot of debt. Don’t get to meet many others & I’m a widow so life gets lonely. Been to 1 small gathering so far. Haven’t gotten to many places. Not giving up! I love this so much more than sticks & bricks. Wish I could boondock. Have no solar, no generator, no fresh water tank in my travel trailer. Thanks for some inspiration gals!
I really enjoyed this video. Great info from varying perspectives is good to hear. We’re onto the 8th right now for us. Different rigs have different pro/cons. We’ve had off-grid property, tent camped, truck camped, hotel/motel traveled! We’ve converted a cargo trailer and traveled cross country with 3 dogs… not small dogs! Too cramped… I’ve had a converted ambulance with 7.3l diesel, hubs couldn’t handle diesel smell when he was along and complained about space. Had a 28 ft tow behind which was good, but hubs wasn’t good towing something so large. We’ve converted Uhaul v10 truck into a basic camper, I want bathroom/toilet and shower option… plus need to use premium gas, costly. But I LOVE that truck! Have a 33ft class A, I do the driving, size isn’t an issue for me. Miss having vehicle to drive. I decided I want a small tow behind with bath facilities to tow behind my daily driver van. Just closing on a rig and I’m anxious to hit the road again!!!
Great video. After being on the road, full time, for three years, in my LTV - towing my Jeep….it was fun to compare my answers to your questions along with the gals in the video.
Ashley has a perfect perspective and enunciates it perfectly. This is wonderful! And the ladies are incredible! So inspiring and gives me strength to keep going and doing.
I love this video. I just started my Nomad life a few months ago. And I agree with everything these ladies are saying. For me it is so freeing and if I don't like the weather I can move, safe travel ladies
This is great. Thanks for taking time to talk with these thoughtful women. I’ve been ‘practicing’ with a layout in my living room at home. I think I’ll have a more successful transition when I finally sell my home and move into some tins of rig.
As a man close to starting my own nomadic lifestyle. I have to say that I found this particular video very stress relieving!. Thank you, ladies. Your comments and insights are much appreciated by this novice nomad. Please know that as a man, I worry about the same issues and fears as were expressed in the video. Safety, breakdowns, being alone in strange places, etc.. Your opinions and thoughts help smooth the waters in my mind about choosing to pursue the nomadic lifestyle. Thank you. P.S. I'll be watching more of your videos!.
Thanks Ladies! Great information! Happy and safe trails to all!
Awesome video. Loved that all the people have been able to find their happy place. Safe travels ladies!
Thumbs UP! Excellent video...I'm trying to make this my get on the road year for some part time travels and to see if I can make this lifestyle work. Thank you!
This was great! I just bought my first little RV and I'm already dealing with having to make some big adjustments and changes... Still ready! Taking off in it this fall from Oregon!😊
Well, that was totally delightful!! Thanks, Robin, for the format and finding the wonderful travelin' women.
I have a bad fear of heights. The last time I had to drive on a mountain road with sheer drops. I cried when I realized I had drive back down the same way. However, some of the greatest views are on those roads. I hate to miss out on them.
Well done. Thank you for sharing.
Great conversation! Thank you, Ladies!
Great content!!! Absolutely enjoyed it. ❤❤
Thank you! Great content here. Very helpful 🎉
Love this!! Great information!
This is definitely a fave! Thanks for such great content - always!
I allowed my sister to talk me out of it for far too long but I was so depressed after my son died that she finally realized it would be the best for me. I have stayed at the the LTVA for the winters but plan on changing that this year.
You ladies Rock!
Love this video! Thank you ladies!!
Great information. Thank you ❤
Thank you for doing this Robin! I loved it!
Loved this. Thanks, Ladies!
Great video and most helpful. So glad to see you Robin doing these great interviews.
Great discussion! ❤
We’re getting everything in place right now so we can hit the road in the next 6 months. This was perfect! Thank you. We’re kind of afraid and anxious but so excited. Our quote is “On the other side of fear is FREEDOM!”
I loved this! Thanks for sharing.
Love this video! Thank you all so much ❤
Thank you for doing this broadcast. I needed this!!
I plan to start travelling soon. I'm glad to hear the conversations and answers from each ladies. I'm enjoying the questions that are asked by them. It helps reassure me and educate me when I get on the road. Thank you.
Excellent questions Robyn❤

Thanks for being so honest ladies! Great video!❤
Great video and content, Robin! Your friends are terrific! Thanks for sharing it!
this was really helpful and it was so enjoyable! I liked the fact that you can join clubs, get your feet wet, learn from the other and....The mountain roads made me think of "The Long Long Trailer"!!!

Aawweeee I loved this video!! These women really had a lot of helpful things to say
This was a great video!
So fun. Can't wait. Getting ready to take off soon.
Excellent video! Thank you.
Great video. Valuable info. Awesome women!
That was fun, thank you
Thank you, Robin & ladies! Good information! Wondering if you ever come across travelers that may have slight physical disabilities. Strength mobility would be my main concern.. A person that has limitations, needs moderate assistance to bend & stoop , but can use a scooter or cane? (physical abilities have some limitations in doing Hook-up chores or fix & repair issues ). Are there groups of travelers that travel together? Hubby is a cancer survivor who can walk with his cane, but no longer able to lift heavy things, crawl under a vehicle or other physical challenges. But definitely has the heart to travel in a safe and manageable environment. Thought’s & references appreciated! Happy travels everyone!
