  • Boerboels can be super clingy to their owners and will follow them everywhere. My boy was socialized from the day after we got him. Out in public with lots of people, noises and smells. Now just 8 months old and has always loved being out and meeting people, loves kids and is a flirt with the ladies. Lets hope this breed doesn't go the road of pitties and bullies and get over popular, over breed and dumped when ignorant lazy owners don't train and socialize them properly. You can still have a well trained and socialized dog who will defend their family and house.

The Boerboel is a wonderful breed , I was first introduced to the breed when I was in South Africa. My first one was born in the states but his mother “bitch” was Imported when she was pregnant.

    • I doubt if boerboels would ever go the road of pitbulls. There are completely different mindset. They were bred to make decisions on their own without any guidance at all. These dogs are very methodical and intelligent they seem to know a real threat from a benign threat they also seem to know small animals and children are of no threat. I've owned many dogs in my life at 59 years and this dog blows my mind how strong smart intelligent and yet almost self-controlled she is.

  • Good job with the puppy , this breed is being destroyed by most breeders that only focus on beauty contests , this breed is very sensitive and needs experienced trainers like you , it’s not a breed for everyone but when you do find a proper boerboel this dogs are the best in the world . Again good Job and the puppy is gorgeous I’m pretty sure it have some dogs that are on most of our dogs pedigrees as I know that type of head well ;)

The crazy thing about animals that are 120 lbs+ and muscular is that they don't even need to open their mouths to do serious damage, a good tackle or lunge and you will be seeing stars and possibly breaking a few bones. The shining light about mastiff breeds and other "scary" dog breeds(German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman) is that they are all highly intelligent and they have a love for learning. Good training makes all the difference in the world.

  • Boerboel literally means farmer's dog (Dutch and Afrikaans origin). They were used by farmers (boers) in South Africa for protection from lions. It would take a pack of four to six boerboels to take down a lion. By way of comparison a lion has a bite force of 650 psi and a Boerboel's is 800 psi. They are extremely powerful, strong low centre of gravity, so it's hard to move or control them and they are cut like body builders. When threatened they spread both hind legs back as far back as possible to plant themselves and it's almost impossible to move them when they are in this position. As protectors they instinctively put themselves between you and any danger. You don't have to train them to do this, it is all basic instinct. Wonderful with families and look after children. They are very gentle around kids, but they are totally unaware of their own power and size and can knock a kid over by accident. They certainly do not lack in the confidence area. They are scared of nothing. They do need lots of socialising because you don't want them seeing everything as a threat to the owner and they need a fair amount of exercise and space. Please make sure you have a big garden and don't leave them alone for long periods of time. Give them jobs to do in play and take them on long walks off the leash so they can run and explore and experience new smells and surroundings for stimulation. Definitely needs an alpha male owner to understand his order in the family pack. They respond to rewards, love, trust and respect, not threats. But a strong tug on the collar is often needed during training. Stunning dogs.

    • Where did you get that super high bite force number of 800psi? The turkish dogs(kangal, malakli etc) have the strongest bite force, then second comes the cane corso, neither of which are listed over 750psi

    • No dogs can take on Lions, it's been proven over hundreds of years of blood sports and baiting. They used to send packs of bulldogs in through the bars and bet how long the lion took to kill/cripple them because lions don't always kill they mostly cripple/maim then leave it to bleed out on the floor thus not risking further injury, lions only kill to eat. Baiting is also how we know that bears kill lions every single time because the lions skull is too weak. The only dogs used to hunt lions were Ridgeback Hounds, a large pack of hounds will hound a lion into bushes they will then circle it so it cannot go anywhere while the hunter comes and shoots it, exactly the same way they hunt foxes or any other animal. Boerboels are for protecting farmland from smaller animals. The lowest average weight for a lion is 180kg and a Boerboel weighs 50-60kg, one swipe from a lion and the dog dies you do realise that right? Lions kill, eat and fight off gangs of Hyenas that are bigger than Boerboels, Hyenas weigh 70-100kg which is almost double a Boerboel, have a bigger bite PSI than anything around and move in clans of up to 100 individuals, 5 Hyenas will kill and eat 5 Boerboels in a fight, Hyenas run from Lions.

Every breed of dog in this world descends from the mastiff, even the pug a breed from antiquity (been around for thousands of years) is a descendant of the mastiff it's why they come sandy with a black face, where do you think a Kangal (black face) Anatolian shepherd comes from? I never used the e-collar back in the day during my training and competition . But then again all my dogs were shepherds. With that being said, I know the e collar isn’t used specifically for one particular breed. I now have a rescue Am Staff. He’s a whole different story and I’ve started using the e-collar, however because I had never used one before, I studied your videos intently so I could have that skill in my head before I started using it on Koda. Not training for competition, so if he’s a little sloppy because of me, that’s ok as long as he listens and he focuses on me and we have that connection. Thanks again for sharing your skills with people especially ones that are just starting out. I’ve referred a granddaughter of mine to your KZhead channel. I don't think I'm ever going to have a any other kind of dog again except for a boerboel. She's so incredibly intelligent and a fierce guard dog and yet gentle and loving as a lamb she's also very human-like the way that she just stares in my eyes when I'm talking to her as if she understands every word I'm saying. It took me 9 months before I could handle her on a leash. They truly are unaware of their own strength she dragged me at least three times it took a lot of time spent with her in order to manage her on a leash. I've had many dogs over the years but I am absolutely sold on boerboels they're awesome amazing guard dogs companion dogs. They're also very keen when it comes to recognizing benign threats versus real threats. They are built for guard dogs and their Spirit should never be broken just guided. I am totally against over socializing a good guard dog. Also my dog is not allowed to take treats from anyone unless I give her the okay first the same goes for petting I don't allow any stranger to pet her unless I give my dog the ok first

  • People think you can get some training techniques and obedience practices to try at home obedience practices and the dog will be trained. Not with these breeds. They’re too smart and when you train one thing they’ll try another behavior and another until they find a weakness where there is a lack of structure, you don’t hold them accountable, and they are allowed to make the decisions instead of looking to you. It’s like trying to squeeze a ballon into the ball of your hand when you have a 5yo sized hand. It’s gonna pop out somewhere. They just know whether you know what they’re trying to do, and once they recognize you do, they follow and are chill unless you tell them not to be. I adore that cheekiness and the fact EVERY interaction in the first couple of years is training, but not everyone enjoys it, especially if they’re not earning the dog’s respect. I’ve seen so many dogs come back from a board & train and they go straight back to the way they were because the owner has no idea. I’d rather tell the owner to take 2 weeks off and train him. He can then deal with the dog onwards. No point training a dog like this and then giving it to an owner who doesn’t even understand the fundamentals of obedience, socialization, the breed characteristics, or structure.

    @ryanmalone2681@ryanmalone2681 Жыл бұрын
    • Well said...! 👍I like your analogy of squeezing the balloon in the hand cuz the dog is going to try every single way to get out of your hand so to speak. and maybe try to dominate.. It does take about 2 years of living with the dog and studying each other extremely studying each other cuz I tell people that's what the puppy they get is going to do, it's going to study you it's going to record every single thing you say or do in its mind every tone of voice body gesture everything they can remember about you and will use it against you LOL. It's not so tough if you have any easy going little breed. But big dogs that can kill me or someone else out on the breaks. My puppies go to experienced people. I almost try to scare potential customers off. I'm very interested in seeing how the situation with this dog turns out and while the trainer didn't ask him why did you buy such a big dog you need to take it back LOL. But on the other hand the trainer may have a two or three year long job training this dog so that would be good for the trainer

  • Having raised an intact male boerboel, training 24/7 is so important. And if you want them to be good with random people /dogs... Extensively socialization is needed. Some folks want the aloofness and guardian in them moreso so you won't socialize as much. People say these guys are not for first time people with such a powerful breed. But i can refute that.... I never had any experience with this type of breed. I did extensive research and talked to many people who own them. Learning, the best method that worked for me was NILF... Nothing.. In.. Life... Is free... Meaning your dog must work for everything.

    • The important thing is you researched the breed, properly trained, and socialized him. You also sound like you have a strong work ethic. The problems come when people get a Boerboel expectation a Golden Retriever. They do not understand how to work with a Guardian breed. They get intimidated and isolate the dog, causing big problems with the dog.. that's why they are not for beginners or people that are not dedicated.

  • I never knew what a Boerboel dog was until I went to adopt some kind of a Mastiff after having two mastiff mixes. In my life I’ve just found my dogs keep getting bigger and bigger. I went to Arizona mastiff rescue after filling out a very long form for adoption. I lived in the LA area so it was a drive. They had a Boerboel for adoption that was about 2 1/2 years old. Due to my application they were really hoping that I would be the right adopter. The dog would always be inside with me and I needed to be able to take him to my office (I am a therapist) I had never never thought that I would get such an incredible dog. When I got him home I discovered that he had already been to Boot Camp because when I walked him I found that he was healing to the left side and because I was walking later at night at CSUN (i used to live across the street from the campus) I decided to let him off leash and he never left my left side. I thought I was gonna have to take him to Boot Camp but I knew right away he’d already been there. I can’t imagine who or why anybody would’ve given up this incredible dog. He is now starting to slow down and I probably won’t have him for too much longer. I have absolutely love this dog and I’m an older lady I’m about to turn 70. The only problem that I had with him is that he would not let other dogs around me. I managed to get it so that a dog could get within 4 feet and so I would tell an owner that my dog is not really dog friendly but if you keep them at a 4 foot distance everything will be fine. I guess he decided I was a sheep and he needed to guard me😂 because this is not a well-known breed I couldn’t seem to find a trainer that knew how to help him get along with other dogs which apparently he’s been able to do at the adoption center. I had read up on their training and everybody that I ran into had a more harsh way of training them to be OK around other dogs. I knew from my reading that this was wrong. Probably like all mastiffs they need a firm hand that is also a kind hand. He was standoffish of people in the beginning but I would take him to outdoor malls to walk him around sometimes and people would want to pet him. So what I did was to make him sit and I could tell he had a business face on😅 So I would tell him he’s OK he’s OK until I saw the wrinkles and Guarding business Drop off. Then I would tell the person that it was OK to pet him. After a few months of doing that he began to become more relaxed in public. I can say you never have to worry about them losing their guarding instinct by making them friendly to people outside. I don’t even think you could get the guarding instinct out without actually killing him😮 i’m going to miss Bruno very very much when he goes and I’m not looking forward to it. I’ve already thought about what kind of dog I would get next. I live by myself in the mountains in a small community, and I would love to have another Boerboel because I fell in love with the breed. My only concern is this ,we jokingly call this place Dog Holler because there’s about 35 people in the neighborhood along with tons of animals and about 45 dogs. For those of you who owned Boerboels or know more about them I’m wondering if there’s any way that I could guarantee he would get along with other dogs. Literally it would be the only drawback I could see to getting another one. Because of my age I would probably take him to Boot Camp at the same time I would not mind adopting again. I can’t imagine how a Boerboel feels that gets dumped. I have never had a dog as loyal and to be dumped it’s just inconceivable to me.

Having this level of dog takes having master's degree in dog psychology and behavior. As for being a liability, definitely, he is sitting on a powder keg. I wanted to add that if it was an option to leave the pup longer with his mother and whatever puppies are left still just to get some basics. I'm betting this puppy left at 2 months or younger. • It does not have to be another handler. If you can appropriately hold your dog accountable and provide the structure that they need to be confident then you will succeed just as much as a trainer. The problem is when the owner/handler allows the dog to escape the situation by whatever means whether it be aggression reactiveness or just trying to escape. You have to hold them accountable and give them a job to do so that they can just get through it and learn that they're going to be okay

That's how much we e spent on ours and mine isn't even a pedigree show dog he's African import lines, so probably not even close to some people's expense.

    • These dog get very suspicious with age and they are easily as tall as a grown man on their hind legs, they are naturally wary, and they are guardian breed, not a guard dog breed, they originally worked the farms in South Africa and defended against trespassers, baboons, leopards etc. They are naturally wary and make decisions very fast, you want a Boerbol to be very open minded because they can send you to the hospital without trying, much less a stranger. You raise a dog with good judgement and they are perfectly capable of common sense while being friendly, they are incredibly smart and very eager to learn. My boy is a absolute love bug, wants hugs and cuddles 24/7 that being said, if we get injured, impaired or he finds something suspicious he will be right Infront of us tail up keeping a lookout, they are just as clever as any malinois with 10 times the power, you do not give these dogs any leeway in the behavior department because they can and have killed people, you do not want anything but a eager and happy to please Boerbol.

  • Why would you train a puppy, for the first time, at a fucking shopping mall?! That’s not fair. That dog is beyond stressed out an the guy knows it! Waaaaay to much stimulation for a dog to listen or interpret… PLUS you train a puppy like 3-5 minutes at a time. MAX.

  • This is an average trainer at best. Lays it on real thick. Bit of a blowhard IMO. This owner is a tool too. Tribal tats, pickup truck and a big dog. Classic. Guy doesn’t have the intellect to read a dog I own a Boerboel. Don’t get one. 99% of people don’t want the responsibility to work a dog that still wants to work. Most breeds have been so watered down. Not true for a Boerboel. Amazing dogs, but they need daily work/stimulation. If I don’t work w my dog for two days he’s unruly as hell. Need to do something w this dog every day to drain his energy.

    • Ooh, man it’s the keyboard warrior sigma male Mike freakin’ Goolsby! Calling a literal police dog trainer “average” Mike Goolsby’s should really be known as Mike “Coolsby”. He has two perfectly well trained Cani Corsi himself. Word of advice: go back to volunteering at your local SPCA instead of criticizing people who actually train Cani Corsi, Malinois, GSDs, Presa Canarios, etc. on a daily basis.
