Hammond has a plethora of vehicles at his disposal, and with The Smallest Cog workshop up and running, the logistical side of having cars where they need to be has gone through the roof. In this instance, the Jaguar XK150 needs to go in for some work, but Richard's beloved Defender also needs to make the journey. A helper is needed...

When will it air in the U.S.???
why not on amazon prime?
I can't. this is not available in DKK

My first proper Defender experience, cheers for throwing me the keys Richard!
At least with you driving and not Richard, there's a far less chance of having a crash. ;-) Would you like to drive his XK? Would he ever let you?
Did the drive give you the Land Rover bug?
I was seriously hoping for Lucy to drive the Land Rover!
I drove a military Defender from Naples to Munich and back. Your assessment of the steering was spot on.
I wouldnt trust you to look at a picture of a landrover mike
"If my insurer's are watching..." They would be relieved for having another driver.
Richard's insurance agent picks up the phone "Hello, it's Richard Hamm..." *click* "For... Richard Hammond I need help, send an emergency team, press one. For Richard Hammond, help is on the way but I need to start a claim, press two. For Richard Hammond, I'm fine but I will need a crane sent to my present location, press three (press 3 star if a diving team is also required). For Richard Hammond, I'mhavingcartroublebutwait.... press 4."
I'd ask May to drive it, is careful with cars. Jeremy would have ripped it apart with "speed and power!".
He'd also magically fix it with his infinite wisdom and a hammer
@@codemy666 His genius is sometimes frightening. Imagine him as a villain…
Nah but James would intentionally drive it vilonently to annoy Hammond. They would both destroy it just to make Hammond angry hahaha
@@codemy666 “it’s nuclear”
Speed and POWER! And then seconds later the next phrase, Nothing to see here! XD
3:17 "How hard can it be?" I've heard that catch phrase somewhere before... Can't put my finger on where. Pretty sure it triggers Hammond though.
Don’t say thaat!
yeah i heard that and i was like… oh no😂
Still, could be worse
What could possibly go wrong!?
That's not gone well
Hammond transformed from TG/GT's local American, to easily the most British of them all.
True
*He still adores Americana though
Well, I think he still retains his old persona.
And the fact that james may is the most modern of em finishes em al
and jeremy turning green. ish
Richard has overpovered his Landy to crush the gearbox in any second. Is he Tim Taylor? 😂
No. He’s Tim’s British cousin.
"MORE POWER...grunt,grunt" in a British accent
@@davidtuttle7556 Well, The Stig does have an American cousin, so ......
Love that show. Had an autograph picture from the cast in 8th grade....loooong time ago.
I'm certain the transfer case issue could be easily rectified with a call to Yukon Gear & Axle or The Driveshaft Shop (DSS). If it's been that fragile, it's really not worth the headache. Just upgrade it and move on.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
@@RichyJFilms plenty of time for zzzzzzzzz's with a car you cant drive
Why would Bowler not upgrade everything so those issues don't arise.
‘Move on’ to the next weak link in the chain
It doesn't say much for Bowler's expertise if they turn out a vehicle like that.
Even the standard Defender driveline eats output shafts. Somehow LR managed to design that "feature" into three entirely different drivelines! LT77, R380 and Puma. Amazing recreation of heritage
The chemistry between Hammond and Mike is awesome to see in video! The way Hammond just keeps fretting about the Defender and Mike just jokingly teasing him about it is fantastic lol. Makes the video way better.
Well, with the crashes of Duke Hammond in mind, I'm very surprised he's acting so suspisious towards other drivers and careful with his Range Rover...
Kind of a Hypocrit
@@kinosgelatos103 no just a pillock
That's always how it is... the person who crashes/drinks/gets in trouble most is the most suspicious of others because they know more than anyone else how easy it is to do those things.
I expect he's like me. If I bend my car, then it's my fault and my issue. I can live with that. Can be a royal pain when someone else bends your car! And it's NOT a Range Rover!
@@garethreece, does he think the same thing when he is on a rally-course with a car of someone else? Or when he was or is taping for Top Gear or The Grand Tour? Land Rover, Range Rover. Potato potato, both are SUV's. Yes, I watched the shows because of their chemistry, not because I like cars that much.
Richard; put your Redex in BEFORE the petrol. That way it mixes with the fuel straight away, and you get the benefit instantly!
Dang, you beat me to the draw on this one. Whole heartedley agree, I always add it first when putting go-juice in the kit car.
But that is dependent on how much fuel he puts in and doesnt know that till he's fuelled up! Classic cars aren't exactly accurate at allowing you to know beforehand how much you can put in...besides, the agitation from driving will mix it up sufficiently 🤡😉
Just demonstrates what a classic pillock he is.
the XK150 is stellar, when I see Hammonds, I'm at a loss for words. Every detail is beautiful ! Glad Mike got to drive the rig! (my '63 wagon has a door like his that doesn't close quite right, I've learned to adore that)
Richard Hammond celebrating free fuel is the most down to earth thing I’ve ever seen.
Well. He's paying for it somehow. DriveTribe is his company, after all. Partly, anyway...
he's worth nearly £40 million quid
@@leenevin8451 How do you know that? Some imaginary number from the internet probably...
@@benn8793 I bet it’s not far off

When hasn't hamster had trouble with a car, whether it's going forwards, backwards, left, right, or even just not moving at all he'll find a way to break it
You forgot upside down!
@@mikehipperson I knew we were missing something important... Do Hamsters do that often?
@@InteloPL Usually when they're dead!
The joys of having a Transit engine and gearbox in a Landy with the addition of a transfer box...
well isent it also a mustang gearbox? or i know mustangs use or used the MT82 and so did the puma defenders. but if they are internally the same, i have no clue
It’s also a Ranger engine.
@@IamNasman I replaced a gearbox in a Ranger last week, albeit a 3.2 five cylinder and if the 2.2 Ranger is the same, for some reason they use a different box...
"Due to a unique combination of incompetency and logistics." Might be the greatest sentence ever uttered. I am stealing it.
As soon as he says, "I am an engineer after all.." is when I knew something is going to happen.
What did i miss?
He's never been an engineer. Never not one iota. He's a local radio DJ.
@@handlesarefeckinstupid Why would he say it then? Surely he's done some sort of engineering before.
"How hard can it be?"... The one phrase you never want to hear when dealing with Richard, James or Jeremy
But don’t you wish he’d get a new script?
@@G58 Nah. That phrase always means something amusing is going to happen. Amusing to us watching anyway
"Don't say that!" - Richard Hammond
Hammond should detune that Defender so that it can be driven, without walking on egg shells, or else beef up the component that fails...
It is not a fragile component, it breaks because it is not lubricated from new. I have changed a lot in the last 10 years, and they dont come back broken if lubricated with correct grease..
The Deffender is now my all time favorite car!
You need it made out of titanium- you can't baby a clutch. That Jaguar is gorgeous
Well what's the splined shaft and cup made of now? If steel then that's stronger than titanium. Titanium is used in strength-to-weight applications, or ultra low corrosion, rather than ultimate strength. Maybe it would need redesigning.
When you upgrade the engine spec you need to also upgrade the transmission otherwise your asking for trouble. It’s kind of like fitting turbo’s on the engine and then destroying the gearbox , clutch or dropping a rod.
Loving your new show Richard, I wish you all the best!
The Jag is absolutely fantastic.... sooo beautiful.👍🇬🇧
Why didn't you put the Jag on a trailer, then you could have taken both vehicles in one.
Wouldn't have used enough fuel :-P
If that output shaft is that weak using it to tow the jag would most likely trash it.
Assuming he has a trailer.
Then they wouldn't have another episode to film.
No content
Hammond drives his Land Rover like first love, take ur time and be gentle 🤣
Made some upgrades to the Defender, now totally undrivable. Awesome.
I mean, if you're going to have a two car garage as a bloke from Birmingham I'd say a Defender and an XK150 is probably right up there!
I bet Hammond is immensely glad that Clarkson is not around when he's doing these episodes.
Goodness mate, worry much lol. That's the Hammond dynamic in full force we know and love. The Jag would sit nicely in my driveway.
The XK150 is a work of art.
Had my defender gearbox and splines rewelded and ground with less play. Never had a problem again. Problem wass to mutch play between gear and splines. Also blew my clutch so put in a bigger one.
You should be on Top gear
I will have to ask him to make certain, but I think the Chauffeur puts the additive in before the fuel to obtain a better mix. I shall have my secretary advise Hamster of such.
Do.
Bond Bug...... I was a kid in the 70s and loved the look of them..
as a fellow brit the only thing I'd wish for is some friends like you guys. I'll be watching your show hamster. you guys are so wholesome and make my day.
Haven’t seen these in so long cause of schoolwork, great to watch again, am I right guys? 😁
"I am an engineer after all." And that's when I got worried.
This is the first time I have seen Hammond since his BBC2 days and Top Gear on Sunday. How many years ago is that ? So much was lost because of Clarkson throwing a right hander. Still love Hammond and still desperaty miss the 3 of them. This is the first I have seen of DriveTribe and Hammonds workshop. My 7yr old boy Nelson used to laugh out loud when Hammond drove in the back of James May and May would shout "HAMMOND".
Great wood collection 🔥
The restored RS 2000 would be epic to own.
Have a word with Ashcroft - they have the bits to make it last. I like that the actual people who built the 150 got the credit. Be nice to put the fuel treatment in before you put the fuel in...
I was going to say the same thing!
It all mixes in the tank....
Who can forget the first appearance of Bowler on top gear and Hammond screaming… awesome!
The new restoration show is keeping me on the edge of my seat. Can't wait for episode 3!
Yes, it’ll be fixing a broken Defender.
I have to ask if the 150 has had an engine rebuild, why wasn’t the valves and seats modified to accept unleaded fuel?
and the fuel system made to accept E10 as well if economic or possible to do..
The XK engine has always been able to run with unleaded. I never use additives in my 1960 mk2.
Because you may as well wait until the unleaded has knackered the old valve seats before you put new valve seats in.
Send the Landy over to us, we'll soon sort it out for you with a Tesla drive unit conversion and not flaky LR transfer box in sight. 😆👍
He'll find some other way to break then.
Defender, fave car hands down. Nice vid
I love the Defender! what a car.
So, basically, Hamster has upgraded his Land Rover ‘el cheapo’. The entire drivetrain should have been beefed up. This is just an operational and a mechanical nightmare.
was thinking this myself, after breaking it once I would have upgraded it
@Mck Idyl It's not the power, it's the torque and it's upgrade from factory. My IIA transmission was designed for a 77bhp 2.25 petrol engine... It's now putting out 111bhp and a load more torque from a 200TDi. The transmission will take it, as long as I'm careful
@Mck Idyl It’s the nearly 500 Newton meters of torque that does the damage.
@Mck Idyl You don't understand torque, do you.
It makes me more impressed that steam cars of the 1920s like the Double had 1000Nm of torque with about 100 horsepower without exploding drivetrains. Should have been a lorry, but was capable of land speed of about 130 mph in a trial. It did 7 mpg, which was normal for the day. Mathematically inefficient by today's standards, but still very impressive. Jay Leno has one. Just sharing.
The irony, Hammond getting excited that DriveTribe is paying for the fuel, a company he is part owner of haha
I love the defender, I absolutely need one
Just watched the first two episodes of the show and it was fantastic!
I find it doesn't have the laughs or humour of Jeremy's or James's shows but it also doesn't need it. It's a great show without that, an insightful look into starting a business up and how it really isn't easy. I'm looking forward to the rest.
well… i had hope. but then i heard “how hard can it be” and uh yeah i lost all faith😂
Odd to hear Richard Hammond talking about mechanical sympathy. I could imagine a hundred press fleet managers screaming “drop the clutch, do it, do it” at the screen.
3:17 I was fully expecting a jump cut to *BOOM*..."uuuh, Hammond???"
Saw the first programme in New Zealand this evening.
That Landy seems over delicate. Use high strength steel
Or a Corvette box and rear end in it. Then he could thrash it. Wait one...this is Hamster we're talking about, right? Never mind.
@@deltavee2 it's the interface to the engine that's the problem. So I guess he would have to change the uprated landy engine and replace it with the Corvette. Yeh, that'll work
with that glasses seems tony stark
Mike, you're doing a fanastic job, keep up the great work
Great show looking forward to more,oh jenson please can’t wait
Dump the 6 speed, fit an LT 95. Five gears totally unbreakable.
Its not the trans its the driveshaft/diff.
"I never let anyone else drive it". Episode 2, Neil driving it...😒
I'm from the US so I never actually seen one in person but ABSOLUTELY the Jensen 😍
Enjoying the show, looking forward to EP 3. Sadly can't get it in Canada though, so I had to go through other methods....
Should have recruited his old mate Jeremy Clarkson to drive his landie…. POWWWEEERRRRRRRRRRR
would have broken down before reaching the gates of the estate
@@stiprus_garsas ha ha…yes
Wouldn’t a Lanchester make a more reliable daily driver?
To Richard hammond I like your program .I wish all the best . With your new venture in car restoration from jeremy ..mellor england
Brilliant 👍
How's Oliver?
At this point get a modded uprated driveshaft
And then he still can't drive it fast because the steering is dangerous. It is all just fixing problems he created himself
Jenson. And well driven in the Defender!
The color of Jaguar is beautiful!
So Hammond increased the power, but now he can't use it because it will break. He ruined his own car to 'scare hot hatches'.
Really hope we will see Oliver slightly* modified one day. *I mean heavenly modified. Like a Jag V8 and a rally gearbox and suspension. Just keep the "Skin" the same. That has so much character. It just deserves to be a absolute laugh to drive.
hammon asked youtube and they said keep it stock.
Having watched the show, I would love the Jensen once it’s finished
Love the new show Hammond. Suitably nail biting too..
I was hoping when mike got in he would just rev to the limiter and dump the clutch
Bowler can’t be that clever if they built this non viable conversion- or did Hammond push them to it??
Seems like a half baked effort to me.
I think few normal people would have the idea to tune up a Land Rover. Especially if they bought it new
Richard you are living the dream of every young boy and old man, in my opinion. All hail the mighty little man.
Cheers for the video mate 😎 👌
I love Hammond, I hate the guy he handed his keys to, skipped all the parts with him in them.
got to love hamster, what a legend
From America and watched Hammond for a long time along with May and Clarkson-hate old cars/motors but would love to have Hammonds E-type.
I find I just HAVE to love a "Silent But Deadly" license tag.
Defender in my experience a BEASTTTT...
I'm a new guy...Have watched Richard on Top Gear for years. Great content Thanks
I'd have the XK150 as I already have an E-type. Both wonderful.
We definitely need more Hammond on drivetribe
I’ve just had a new clutch, coupling kit, various bushes, new gear stick on my Defender 90. It’s like a new car. No more clunks.
4:04 Thanks Mike I'm glad I'm not the only one looking at the sheet of paper that says what I am, in my case being a cyber security major. XD
For me it's the RS, thanks for the entertaining shows guys
Wow... That was about as exciting as watching grass grow. 😨
Richard's car trouble that doesn't involve crash! Great!
I bought a defender new in 2013. It was towed 7 times in 2 years. It was a total PoS . Hammonds made one even less reliable. Wouldnt have thought it possible.
Love the Jag, but Defenders stole my heart.
i'd have loved the restored mini ,had one many years ago ,oh to re live that again would be great
Mindy's Merc that she was working on in EP 3 was the best car yet.
Mr Hammond has a nice castle, seriously!!
My friend Alastair has 2 of those Jags. Rebuilt by the Sports car factory in Hallville Ontario .
Hammond's new show should have been on Amazon Prime...
