Johan had a Great White Shark come in to attack him. Read the story below
JOHAN POTGIETER: Cameraman and Writer
We went out on Thursday the 27 August to one of our favorite diving spots in Arniston, Cape Town, South Africa.
The divers who were with me were Francios Smuts, Rene' Nel and Erik Fourie.
The main reason that we have decided to go to Arniston on that day was because we wanted to go look for some good eating reef fish. We watched the weather for more than a week to get a small chance at getting out to sea, we were looking for good flat sea conditions to be able to launch the boat at this specific launching site. On the 27th it was an awesome day, absolutely no wind with about a 1,4m swell running, the sea was amazingly flat, which is not common for this part of the world. We decided that we would get going early in the morning and drive strait out to one of our well know reefs at Skipskop we would then work our way back to Saxon reef later in the day. When you have a perfect day like this you have to make sure to be well prepared to maximize the opportunity. We got to Skipskop, Rene' said he would man the boat first, the water looked like it was quit milky, not great viability for diving, but in the early morning there was a bit of cloud cover so it was hard to decide what the viability was actually like. Francios, Erik and myself got in the water just to check if was dive-able. We got of the boat on a pinnacle that comes up to 15m and drops down on its sides to 19m. I dived down on the edge down to 19m and when I leveled out on the bottom I looked first to my right, and then as I looked to my left the Great White shark was right next to me, that could quit easily been the end of me. I just managed to prod him with my spear, before he turned his nose he was only an arm's length away from my head..he seemed not to like my defensive prod to much, sped off, made a sharp turn, dropped his pectoral fins (very aggressive behavior) made a sharp 180 degree turn and came to attack me. At this point the situation turned from a close encounter to life threatening. The Shark was clearly now in attack mode. I had to show some dominance back to him to avoid being bitten, I thrust my speargun forward with all my might and managed to give him a good prod causing him to veer off again and disappeared into the gloom. At this point I was out of air and made my assent as fast as i could, trying not to display any signs of panic. When I got to the surface I was more worried about Francios and Erik than anything else. I shouted to warn them, stuck my head back in the water and the White was right underneath me. I could not believe this shark had followed me up to the surface, I have seen many Great White sharks and never see aggressive behavior like this. All I could think was get to the boat and get the heck out of the water. At this point I had no idea what my dive buddies where going through, I was seriously stressed about their safety. It felt like a lifetime before the boat got to me, I jumped on and at the same time Eric jumped on the other side. Now the panic set in, Francios was no were to be seen, Rene' said he was still on the bottom and we didn't know if he was okay. I kept my mask and fins on just encase he needed any help. Couple of seconds later his head popped out in front of us, we all were hugely revealed but now we had to get to him fast and get him onto the boat ASAP. Francios didn't know about a thing..haha he said he only heard a loud noise close to him which was probably the shark making a sharp turn and swimming away. The water was so murky, even the thought of this sent shivers down my spine. We all had a good laugh and a huge sigh of relieve, went and picked up our marker bouy and moved to a new spot about 13 km away, far far away, from that place. We dived for the rest of the day but quit uncomfortable to say the least. It was a day I'll remember for the rest of my days and one I'll not only tell my children about but also show them.

    • Powder. Well yeah I think the shark was a combination of curious and testing. I think it wasn't familiar with humans so the first approach was seeing what it was and whether it was something good for eating. Then the second approach was about testing to see whether the human is a defenseless thing that will turn it's back in flight response. The third approach on the surface was the same, curious and testing the human's level of defense. At that stage it was still testing, not sure what the go is with the human. If the shark was familiar with humans, it very much would have attacked from the start, if it liked human flesh that is. If the shark was committed from the start, it would have mauled on that first approach when it snuck up on him. Luckily the shark was in curious mode. Not harmless curious mode though, it was curious in regards to 'can I kill this strange thing I've never seen before'. It was a fairly dangerous situation, it really was. But peter's comment is still funny XD I don't think it was a sociable curiousity though, it was in prospective hunting mode. Good call about the weed but!

You can tell by the cloudiness that it was low-visibility, combined with it being an overcast day, that is seriously the dinner bell call for sharks worldwide. They love being able to ambush their prey in those conditions, clearly why it practically sideswiped him out of nowhere. Thankfully, this guy was lucky, although I truly believe the sharks aren't out to get us, they just simply have to swim, eat and make little sharks. Sometimes we get in the way....

    • Hey ian, do you know how well sharks can see in the sea water compared to humans? Like are we within their visual range while they are out of ours? I heard that bullsharks have bad eyesight and rely a lot on smell. Would that mean that they see worse than humans in the sea or still better? Also also heard that great whites are more visual, a large percentage of their brain is dedicated sight.

It was a juvenile shark, probably not as confident as an adult but still very dangerous. Mistaken identity is the cause for all white shark attacks, this murky water is perfect conditions for that. • I see it like this, the shark is simply a hunter. It does not think as much as us, it's entire survival is based on knowing how to catch victims. as you can tell, it was doing just that. however, it did not commit, possibly because it didn't want to risk it's life over something it isn't sure about. sharks typically only pick on things that they think are weaker, if it were a dolphin or an Orca whale, the shark would likely attempt to book it. maybe it sensed danger when the human reacted with the weapon, so it disengaged briefly, and then it lost it's opportunity to strike when the human was ready and alert. i think the shark was actually trying to bite him, it just didn't expect the amount of resistance. you have to remember, human's react very differently than fish when they're in danger, fish just swim away, human's have defensive skills. something that sharks are not used to seeing from weaker\smaller prey. plus, the bubbles might had done something to the sharks senses.

But this was a much larger shark and that diver didn't have a speargun to protect himself. He was attacked and taken underwater by the shark when trying to swim back to his boat, never to be seen again. They later only found a flipper and diving gear. A scene straight from the movie Jaws.

    • @@candyman9798I'm 100% positive the fatal Great Shark attack which Incognito mentioned did happen, but I think he has the year wrong. It was around 20th September 1987, not 1989. I remember because I was on my honeymoon, sunbathing on a Corfu beach, reading a British newspaper called The Sun, detailing the attack from the day before. It took place in the Adriatic Sea, northern area of the Med. It will always stick in my mind because as I was reading about it I noticed my husband had swam out too far from the shore and I panicked, thinking he might become sharkbait too!

Well that is a strange one🤔 as I'm absolutely adamant on the date ('cos I'm still married to my husband) and I can remember it was The Sun newspaper from the day before, which we bought in the little town of Kassiopi on the way down to the beach. We stayed there between the 14th to the 28th of Sept and we'd been there about 6 days or so when it happened. The Sun rag said the young man died from the Great White Attack in the Adriatic. He was in his early 20's. Sorry I can't help with a Link as I've no idea. I should imagine The Sun would have the news piece in their archive, but that won't be much help to you! I must admit I looked for the attack within the last year myself but had no luck either. I hope you find out about it as I remember reading it as if it was yesterday.👍😊

I don't think there was any chance of a full blown attack here, if the the shark had senced something he wanted, it would have attacked from underneath as the diver was resurfacing.

    • The truth is that one great white at that size could attack and kill a diver from any angle in few seconds. They can move over 50 km/h and their prey-recognition hability is far better than people think. Humans are not a target for them, and that's the only reason why you can see hundreds of shark videos interacting with humans and no real attacks in them (maybe one day, they are wild animals after all). It's the same reason why other big sea predators don't attack us. Thousands of years of evolution determine that if you swim with a shark, probably nothing gonna happen. If you walk next to a wild land predator (big enought) you probably will be attacked, killed or eaten. Maybe all at once...

  • I have enough respect for the ocean 'not to go near it'. the water is so damn deep, it is denser than a forest with the volume of camouflage, and it is a place where most creatures and predators have grown senses that allow them to hunt without visually seeing something. you're naive to think that the ocean is free for us to find food in, the shark was there to remind you that you're not in a playground buddy. these are hunting grounds, the only place that humans cannot dominate and multiply. sharks are as lethal as one of those prehistoric dinosaurs, they're very exceptional predators with pure instinct to eat just about anything. it is just so careless to wonder into these places, as soon as you get into that deep dense ocean you're back in an older world. the ocean has hardly changed since the dinosaurs, it still has very scary apex predators that humans don't dare go near.

Most animals when hunting a larger prey will not all in attack the animal, but test it's movement with near passes, nips, and endurance chasing. It is possible since it's a great white it could have gone for an extreme bite. But that's pretty rare in deep water.

    • +Kudo That is really not true. I do shark fishing for recreation/tagging for research and have gotten to watch sharks a decent bit. You only see a quick first pass strike now and again. A lot of the time you will see them pass the bait once or twice, or do a close pass, before hitting. More alpha predator sharks seem to investigate more. The most I've seen a shark prepare to strike was a mako, and it actually tried to get the bird near my bait instead of the bait... after almost 1.5 hours of circling and preparing.
