    • I think Russia targeted both of the nord streams for two reasons. 1. A show of force. Now, no matter how nasty the winter gets and no matter how an utter emergency might allow for payment of gas in rubles to be made despite the sanctions it cannot happen now. 2. And more importantly, they have targeted essential infrastructure as a way to provoke the other side into war. Notice how the choice was made to do this in Denmark's territorial waters? Denmark isn't in Nato, so Russia can do their damage without immediate retribution but do it in a manner that threatens Europeans enough it might be provoked. Putin is itching for a fight, any justification and since what he's done so far isn't getting a rise out of Nato that he'd hoped for he's targeting non nato members in hopes they'll need to be defended anyway.

    • @@xzaviayifu3581 Except there is one massive logical hole in your argument. Why would Russia blow up it's own pipeline when it can just close the shutoff valves indefinitely and achieve the same result? Also it's just too convenient that a competing pipeline under NATO control serving the SAME AREAS NS1 and 2 serve opened the very same day NS1 and 2 were destroyed. I think the US did it. And i believe this because it's something Biden said he would do, and the US had two different opportunities to plant explosives on the pipes before the day they exploded. The first would've been during a naval exercise in the area earlier this year and the second would've been just a couple of weeks ago when the USS Kearsarge sailed through the area.

  • The use by Russia of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine is unlikely: (1) they are most effective against massed units of personnel and armour, and the Ukrainian Army follows NATO doctrine in keeping its forces dispersed, only concentrating them for attack 'punches' through enemy lines - although the consequences of a nuclear attack would be severe, the Ukrainians have prepared for this eventuality and they will not be cowed by Russian threats; (2) Russia would lose the support of a key ally, China, and India would no longer remain neutral in its attitude towards the war - Russia would be left with few, if any, friends; (3) NATO would launch a massive non-nuclear response, for example it is quite capable of destroying the Russian Black Sea fleet; (4) Putin could not be certain that his senior commanders would obey such an order - it could even precipitate a Kremlin coup; (5) It would take time to organise a nuclear attack and the preparations would be difficult to conceal, and, as far as we can be aware, Western intelligence have picked up no signs of Russian weapons being readied and a target zone(s) being cleared of Russian forces. When a man says he's not bluffing, it usually means he is.

    @johndean4998@johndean4998 Жыл бұрын
    • Bluff or not… the REAL question 🙋‍♀️ is… CAN PUTIN WIN without using NUKES… A) if YES then no need for nukes. B) if NO then … will NUKES 💣 MAKE HIM WIN ??? … MAYBE 🤔. So far the MISSILE TECH OF THE WEST is just too powerful for Russia 🇷🇺 infantry, armor, artillery, and air force… EVERYTHING is killed by MISSILES… Personally, PUTIN CAN WIN economically via gas ⛽️ and food 🍱 supplies… This WINTER 🥶 will be the deciding FACTOR if NUKE IS NECESSARY. @volo7877@volo7877 Жыл бұрын
  • As accuracy has increased nuclear warhead sizes have decreased. Back in the 80s a megaton warhead strike (and possibly several) would be required to destroy a target due to low accuracy. Nowadays with pinpoint targeting, a drastically smaller, single warhead is preferable. The total worldwide warhead size available is now far,far lower than it was back then. It is therefore highly unlikely that any nuclear winter scenario would develop following a modern atomic exchange. Most worryingly this has led some milittarists to believe that a nuclear war is actually a winnable scenario with an acceptable level of home destruction.

  • Russia can now use nuclear weapons in defence if ukraine tries to take back these areas because technically it's Russian soil now and its a great tactic militarily as it gives him cause to do so and will show the world how much ukraine will risk for a few km of land

    @GregoryMcStevens@GregoryMcStevens Жыл бұрын
    • It is a good strategy. Any territory Ukraine loses and can't take back immediately essentially becomes lost forever to them lest they get erased from existence for trying to retake it.
