You were right on the money for an estimate of a comparable gas pick up truck at 20 miles per gallon, which is what I got Camping the last few weeks over 4300 miles in my F150 hybrid. And I sure paid a whole lot more per thousand miles than you did ! Am waiting for my Lightning to be built, and planning how to use it for camping and long drives by watching your vids. So ‘thanks’ and I hope you keep on paving the Lightning way!
Do you have Pro Power on Board in your hybrid? That system in and of itself is so nice for camping.
Bad power at campgrounds is pretty common. I expect the onboard charger is smart enough to prevent connecting bad power. You can get a tester from a camping store that will show basic things like open neutrals and grounds. You probably had one or both hot legs below voltage, which a basic tester won’t show. Back when we had a camper, this was common on hot days at full campgrounds (like a brown out). The truck probably protects itself. Last week I had a sub panel installed for my Tesla wall connector and the new 100 amp circuit breaker only passed 80 volts on one leg. The wall connector knew it and wouldn’t power up. The electrician had never seen that before. Replaced the breaker and it worked fine. Loving your adventure videos.
Thank you for your thoughts. I was thinking low voltage as it was very hot in a pretty rural area. Either low overall or perhaps unbalanced between the two hots.
Your videos on the F-150 Lightning have gone a very long way to help calm my ‘charging anxiety’. My F-150 Lightning is in production as I type this out and hope to have it by the time I go camping in PA in July. I too ordered the antimatter blue Lariat and your videos have given me an incredible view into what I’m going to get very soon. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words. As long as you can have a 50 Amp, 240 volt outlet in your garage or outside your house to charge from, you should have zero concerns. By far most charging occurs at home (every night). Unless you go to north western upper Michigan or North Dakota, or through West Virginia, you should have no concerns about charging on the road either.
Came for the truck, stayed for the dam jokes!
Glad I could entertain you, lol.
This makes me want the car even more. Thanks for the video. Would love to do what you are doing some day.
Thank you for these great videos.
Thank you for watching!
loving the videos man! keep em coming! my build date was 6/20 for my Lightning Lariat ER... now pushed back to 7/11. I cannot wait to finally get it!
Good luck getting your Lightning. It is definitely worth the wait. We are going off into the wilderness this afternoon to highlight the Pro Power on Board. Look for that video to drop towards the end of next week after I get the editing done.
That is such a cool truck, absolutely love it! I put the 100 dollars down on a Ram Rev hopefully I can get one!
I love my Lightning. Why are you waiting for the RAM versus lining up for a Lighting or Rivian R1-T?
Dublin GA is right up the road from me! Glad to see they have charging stations around there!
Much less stress getting through WV than your last video. That one even had me on the edge. Nice video!
Thanks!
Electrify America seems to be closing more stations than they are opening. Heard the keep your eyes on the road warning a few times 😂
That keep your eyes on the road warning doesn't mess around, lol.
@@EHermes that thing keeps me in check lol
Thanks so much for the charging info, the great scenery and also your thoughts regarding when, where and how much to charge. You’re doing a great job, I hope I get my turn to get a lightning. Thanks again!
Thank you. Good luck getting your Lightning.
That's not camping , you have to plug in your truck every time you stop . we camp in the back woods in the mountains, no plug ins. So I would have to take a generator with use everytime we go camping ?
@@nicholascurrie264 There are several types of camping. This is more what is useful when we are traveling. Our next video is off into the wilderness with no power, no hookups, not even a picnic table. Stay tuned for that video in about a week.
@@nicholascurrie264 solar panels for mobile charging is coming.
I live in Mercer County where Pipestem park is located... fished there and hiked many times. FYI Wytheville is pronounced "Withville". My favorite pumpkin patch is located there.
Thank you for the pronunciation tip. It was a tossup and guessed wrong, lol.
Thanks for this. Overall, it didn’t look like charging got in the way at all for this trip.I’d be inclined to carry a small generator as a backup plan, just in case. Especially getting through VA.
Campground charging overnight is a really good deal. There are enough other chargers around that you don't need a generator.
So you use existing plugs at RV sites? That’s very useful information that I haven’t seen elsewhere.

sounds like a 20 hr charging trip. a complete day of the 8 lol
You can check your driving log in the Ford Pass App and it gives you details for each trip you take in the truck, like literally for every time the truck is driven and has mi/KWH details included. I would be interested in seeing your average mi/KWH for the trip. I have had my F150 Lightning for a week and am typically seeing 2.4-2.8 mi/KWH in my daily 25-30 mile trip to work and back. I also am interested to hear if your bed cover improved efficiency at all from what you can tell. Great Video!
Thank you for that information. I will check and see what I can find out. I put the bed cover on the day after I picked up the truck, so I do not have a good base to compare against. I really wanted the cover to cover and protect the camping gear in the truck. I am guessing your trip to work is not all highway because if you are getting 2.4 to 2.8 at 70 mph or so you are very fortunate.
@@EHermes oh no! My trip to work is 55 mph easy drive. Definitely not 70 mph
Great video thank you. I noticed that on a full charge the range estimate was 270 miles. is that because the truck was taking into account grade and elevation changes? Has this read the actual 320nmiles on a full charge while in the city?
The 270 (another day it was 290) is based on your prior driving habits, speed, acceleration, temperature, etc. I live in a rural area with general high speeds so I have never seen a 320 range estimate but I am sure others have and even more than 320 I believe.
this is actually the same on my current 2022 ICE lariat F150.. I've topped the tank off and showed 540 miles of range... drove 35 miles home from work at very conservative speeds in some light traffic, and arrived home with now 565 showing on the range estimator ... and that's on top of the 35 mile drive home!! so it added 60 miles to my range based on that slower (50-55 instead of 70+) driving habit
How would you rate the overall trip? Looked pretty flawless minus the EVSE issues at the one campsite.
We really enjoyed it. I wish we would have had even more time. We wanted to go to the Biltmore Estate and we would have liked to spend time in the Smoky Mountains, but you can only do so much in any one trip.
Okay just a couple of questions, when you first bought the truck, with a full charge what was your max range? And is there something on your touch screen? I noticed a line through it. Throughouly impressed with this road trip though
I'd like to know more info on what he's getting for the overall range too. It looks like the computer is estimating 270 or less most of the time for total range even though he has been hitting 2.4mi/kWh on some of the trip. How accurate is the rage estimate and are you ever getting close to the 320mi EPA range?
When I first picked up the truck it was 308 miles at 100%. It adjusts based on your driving style (hard acceleration and high speeds reduce range). I just did a bunch of city driving and I was amazed at how little battery I used. Yes, that is the original factory screen protector on it with some glue residue from another sticker. I am waiting for an aftermarket screen protector, then I will remove the dirty one.
I noticed you have a tonneau cover on your f150 lightning and I was curious did you notice any extra range with cutting out some of the drag?
I put it on the day I got the truck for secure storage. I am told it has a small positive impact on range.
I have the SR Lightning and I am concerned with taking it camping overnight, now after watching this video, I am not. Did you use an adapter to charge, or did the camp ground have a NEMA 14-50? Also, I noticed you slept in the cabin. Were you able to use your air conditioner while charging all night?
Richard, The campgrounds we chose all had 50 amp/240 volt outlets. We only slept in the cab once (although I have since slept in it one other night) and yes, by keeping the truck "ON", you are able to keep the climate control on all night. It works really well while you are plugged in, but it takes about 5% of the battery if not plugged in.
How’s the sound system in this truck? My dad and I have a couple of lightning Pros deposited on
I believe the Lariat has an upgraded sound system from the Pro but the Lariat sounds better than my Tesla Model Y and the Tesla system was far and away better than any other vehicle I had ever owned. Short answer: Really good.
Did you need any adaptors at the campgrounds ⛺️ to plug the truck in?
You get a 240 volt, 50 amp plug with your Ford mobile connector. You also get a 120 volt, 15 amp plug. Those are two of the three most common outlets at campgrounds. The third is a TT30 which is 120 volts, 30 amps. You would need an adapter for that. I have one for my Tesla mobile connector but I have not gotten one for the Lightning yet. This is for the Tesla, but mostly applies to the Ford as well. kzhead.info/sun/lsd8ndOcoJOkfGg/bejne.html
Due many campgrounds meter the electric now or is it fixed rate for the sight
At almost all campgrounds it is included in the nightly fee. Some do charge more (about $5) for a site with electric over one with no electric.
How did your cover impact your range?
I put the cover on the second day I had the truck so I do not know for sure. I suspect it provides a minor increase
Can the charger using a TT-30 outlet? TT-30 = level1, 30amp, 120v. Why use TT-30: 15 amp (house outlet) vs 30 amp (TT-30)
The truck certainly can; the mobile connector cannot. The solution may be to use the Tesla mobile connector and adapter to J-1772
low voltage issues and open grounds are classic campground power problems. i am willing to bet it was low voltage for you.
That was my assumption as well.
Why are you limiting the charge % when you are at the campsites? I understand limiting it at the DC fast charging stations to help with battery longevity and costs, but it seems like you should take advantage of the free power at the campground.
While charging to 100% regularly at DC fast chargers degrades the batteries somewhat, even at 240 volts over and over may also have some negative effect on the battery pack. That said, when I needed 100% I charged to 100%. When I didn't need the full charge, I charged to less than 100%.
@@EHermes Thanks for the reply, I'm not an EV owner and wasn't aware that the 240v charging should be limited.
@@jdsullivan21 First of all, even when charging to 100% you are not really charging to 100% because the vehicles Battery Management System holds part of the battery capacity in reserve. That said, it is best for battery longevity to limit the number of times you charge to 100%. When you need to, you definitely go ahead do so, but not on a daily basis. Doing so at a DC fast charger is harder on the battery than at a 120 volt or 240 volt outlet.
who is "WE" you and the camera?
My wife is with me
Power is expensive during the day .
Most, but not all, public chargers charge the same amount no matter the time of day. However, that appears to be changing.
sleeping in 80k $ truck.. get a nice hotel..lol great informative vid tho
You keep saying charger, it's not. It's the power source. The charger is built into the truck.
I know that, you know that, but most people don't, so I use the term most people are most familiar with.
If from AC, that is correct, the charger is in the truck. Converts AC to DC in the truck. But from a DC fast charger, it is in fact a charger...it converts the AC to DC within the charger unit and delivers the DC to the truck.
Gas is $5 here
If you can park you vehicle that close to your tent, you're not really camping.
do you know that it takes more fossil fuel to make one ev battery than a gas car uses in its lifetime? and then after the life of the battery, it becomes hazadous waste. what to they do with them
Could of skipped JC home, not a fan…
naw man, a little history isn't bad. He didn't show that for to long.
Need a place to stay.
Dublin GA is right up the road from me! Glad to see they have charging stations around there!
That one was a nice surprise. 62.5 kWh isn't super fast but it beats level 2 chargers at 7 or 8 kWh.
