During this video I’ll take you step-by-step through a tutorial of how to make your very own paracord cobra braid dog collar 🐾
Check out my blog for step-by-step instructions with pictures: www.diypetaccessories.com 💕
Materials:
✨ 550/Type 3 Paracord (1ft for every inch of braid)
✨ Side-release buckle (plastic or metal)
✨ Welded d-ring*
✨ Lighter
✨ Paracord fid or needle nose pliers
✨ Scissors
*Make sure you use welded d-rings as unwelded are much weaker and prone to coming off if the dog pulls, welded are much stronger. Make sure you are using a size appropriate for your dog!

This is the best video I have come across to create this type of dog collar! Thank you very much. You’ve explained everything so well from the beginning right until the end!
Love it!! The colors are perfect for my little Gracie girl 🐶 thanks for sharing 😊
This is the best video I have found on this. I had no idea about the ft to braid measurement.
I’m so happy I came across your video - thank you so much for your simple instructions 🥰.
This was so helpful! I’ve already made one each for my two dogs in just an hour 🥰🙏🏼 thank you so much!!
I agree! Best video I have seen! Thank you so much
Thank you!! There are tips in here that no one else mentions!
This is the best video I've found for collars by far! You explain everything so clearly! Thank you 🙌
Excellent video. Very clear. Many thanks.
oh i love these so much, i suck at braiding, but this made me understand❤❤
Thank you so much for the detailed video... I made my first dog collar.
hi! I've just watched your video and it was actually really helpful, I didn't know how to even start! I saw that you didn't get enough recognition that you deserve so I decided to comment on you're video to tell you to keep up the good work! thank you so so much
Thank you so much! I keep meaning to make another but life has been super hectic. Will definitely be coming soon though!
Thank you so much for a fantastic video. I was able to make a dog collar with my daughter. Easy to listen to and follow along. Would love to see more tutorials, especially a dog leash if possible, please. Keep up the amazing work! 😍
The best video! Thank you sooo much.
Thank-you very much for this video especially the way you finished up so much neater then many others.
Thank you so much for your account I wanna start a small business but I dont know anything about it and now I have a start for training
This is the best video for a paracord dog collar tutorial! 😄 You explain everything so clearly! Thank you so very much! This is so easy to make for my future Etsy store! Thank you 👍😁
Finally found someone who actually shows each step clearly!😅 would love to see more collar tutorials! 🥰
shes great isnt she! me too x
Omg just made this with reflective cord for my cat. It looks stunning on him. First one I have ever made. Thank you for such a clear and informative video xxx
So glad I could help! I’m actually going to do another type of braid that can be done for dog and cat collars which is also cute 🥰
@@d.i.ypetaccessories I can't wait xxx
Hi Sheila 👋 where did you purchase reflective cord from ? I’d love to make the same for my cats
@@daniellejrivers I got it from amazon I do believe xx
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! you are so clear in telling me what to do. I was almost shouting before I found your video, because all the others were so hard and confusing. Thx so much!!
Thank you so much for showing me how to do the double cow hitch on each side. It took me a few tries, but I finally got it and I understand it now. All of my stuff looks so much better and more professional. Thank you.❤
I thank you for showing me the perfect paracord tutorial. I have looked long and far for the perfect look. I'm starting my own business, and after watching this tutorial its perfect for me.
Thank you very much! You are the only person who said what length of the paracord is needed for what girth. I have a German Shepherd, I bought 10 meters of paracord, and I didn't know if it would be enough.❤
Hi! This is best and clearest video I have watched, can I ask what size buckle do you recommend for these? I want to have a go at making my dogs one but don’t want to get the buckle side wrong! Thank you🙂
Hi, thank you so much! I used 20mm in this video as that's the size I use for Poirot's collars. You can use a 25mm buckle there would just be a tiny bit extra space where the knots are and I have squeezed it onto a 15mm too! Any smaller and you would just need to get a different size paracord such as type 1 or 2, they usually put mm width of cord in product descriptions. Buckle size mostly depends on your dog breed; 25mm for labs and bigger, 15mm for small breeds such as dachshunds, cavaliers etc and 20mm for everything in between.
It depends on your dogs’ breeds. I would use 10-15mm for toy and small dogs, 20mm for medium and 25mm for large breeds. My dog is small but fluffy so I use 20mm on him as the width looks better
I have never done any paracording was thinking of making my dog a collar this is very clearly demonstrated thanks for the share but I am confused at the point you put the male end on where it was attached or how you then continued. I understand you wanted a certain length but I was then baffled which end you attached to the table you took it off to measure and next thing one end was stuck to the table what was 13 inches the distance between the ends? Am I correct that the central cords just go between the buckles and the others are continously tied I couldnt figure out where the other end was when you stuck the one down or even in fact which you had attached to the table until the second end came in view.
Hi there, sorry for the confusion. Yes it would be 13 inches from the female clip end to the base of the male clip (where the two clips would meet) as I want the collar to be 13 inches long in total. After I had attached the cord to the male end it was that end I taped down as the loose cords (for braiding) are on that side. You don’t need to tape it down it was just easier for me on camera to stop it moving around. To attach the cords to the male end I put the ends of the cord through the buckle from the top of the buckle down and then measured my 13 inches so I know how long the centre cords would be (and you’re right these are there the whole time as this is what you braid around). I then take the loose long cord through the middle of these two centre cords (from the back to the front if that makes sense). From there I repeated the cow hitch knots I did on the female end. I’ll try to explain using the cord colours as it might be easier. Take the pink long cord over the centre pink piece to the side. Then take the end of the pink cord up through the buckle from the bottom up. You’ll have created a big pink loop with that long cord. You don’t want to move your centre cord pieces at all these are keeping the length of your collar. Take the pink end through the loop and pull to tighten. It should look like a single cow hitch. The back of this will look slightly different to the female end as we attached it differently. You’ll then repeat that step with the green side. I really hope this helps! If you’re still a but stuck I have another video on my channel showing a couple different ways of attaching the cord. I show this attaching method using a much shorter piece of cord to make it a bit easier to see, so that might make it a clearer too.
Do you have a video on how you connected or burned the 2 colors like you did in this video?
Hi, I’m just editing a couple of videos I have so that one will be up soon. If you’re needing one quickly though there are a few on joining paracord on youtube already, hopefully they’ll be able to help!
Thank you so much for sharing! Your video is great and gave me the inspiration to make some for my four frenchies!! What size are the d-rings? 3/4??
I usually use hardware that fits my dog so these will be 20mm. I’d use the same for frenchies or smaller if you prefer thinner collars. If you go down to 15mm you’d be better getting type 2 paracord as it’s slightly thinner so will fit the buckle better
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Thank you again - I'll be using the same size as in your video 20mm. I like that size :). I just couldn't tell what size d-ring you used in your video to match the 20mm clasp. :)
Благодарю Вас за интересный, обучающий материал! Прекрасная работа!❤
Hello I have made two beautiful collars with the help of your great video , One question where do you buy all your supplies from i’ve just bought the first lot of eBay but would like to know if you could recommend somewhere better thanks
Hi, that’s so great to hear! Yes I have 2 go to places. I’m in the UK so it might be different if you’re elsewhere, but I use petbitsonline for hardware (make sure to get welded d-rings) and I use paracord emporium on etsy for regular 4mm and 2mm paracord.
I can't get the second side that ypu start braiding from to look like yours I tried for nearly 40 mins I have 2 strands that aren't knotted in the middle with a single hitch either side I know I must be missing something (probably simple misstep) but it's driving me bonkers lol
Hi, if you're able to, could you post a picture? I'm a visual person! If you're using one colour of cord you'll just need the one long strand (1 foot for every inch of collar), if you're using 2 colours they need to be joined in the middle so you're still ending up with one long strand.
@@d.i.ypetaccessories it won't let me post a picture sadly I know I must be missing something basic as your video is an easy tutorial to follow I do the first double hitch just fine but can't seem to do the second double hitch on the male side of the clip I'm not making to sell just for my own puppy so my dodgy failed attempts aren't to bad but it drives me nutty as I'm a perfectionist. Thanks for replying 🙂
I can't get it either in the second side the knot is going over making the double knot just a single
Bring your loose cords through the center of the two middle ones. I hope that makes sense. I had trouble with it too.
I can’t get the second buckle! I’ve tried for three days. 😂 really m frustrated and sad 😢
Awesome to cover a prong collar☝️
Glad you like it!
Hi, very good tutorial. The only things that scared my is that melt toghether the 2 color. There is another way?
Hi, yes there is another way. I can do a video on it soon. It will use a paracord fid but I will also see if you can do it without one.
Wow mam I just watched the video it was very useful ... It's really awesome where did u get the buckle
So glad you liked it! Most of my buckles at the moment are from paracord.eu but they have quite a high shipping rate unless you're in the netherlands. In the UK there is petbitsonline. I'm not sure about anywhere outside of the UK but if it's just for your own pet you can find decent buckles on ebay or etsy.
Is it possible to make them for larger dogs? I love your videos but I've got a Siberian husky so the collar kinda dissapears in her coat XD Can't wait to learn more techniques!
Hi! You can make them any size and just use a larger buckle. I’m the same, my dog is small but he’s very fluffy which is why I never show the collars on him as you can’t see them! I’ll be doing a video shortly on set ups for larger buckles and another on cord size but you can definitely still make these for your husky, you just might not see them under all the floof!
Where do you get the side release buckle? Can't wait to try this.
I get mine from paracord.eu but you can usually get them from ebay/etsy/amazon depending on where you are. If you’re doing it for your own pets then I’d suggest there, if it’s a business I would do some online research about collar hardware as there’s bound to be a wholesaler about somewhere! I can also get them from petsbitsonline in the UK but they are a different shape.
Do you have a specific brand that you use and where you buy from. I'm looking at paracord on Amazon to buy the bundle.
I actually use Etsy for my paracord as I find price per foot is sometimes better or at least equal to other companies. I’m in Scotland though so this may differ depending on where you are. If you’re in Europe then I can highly recommend paracord.eu (delivery charges are high for me thanks to Brexit!) I’m not sure of any specific company across the water, sorry!
Thanks
I've got a question, Where I live I can't find paracord, can I use climbing rope? I love this tutorial❤️
Hi, you can honestly use anything as long as it’s sturdy. I’ve seen people use macrame cord. The current cord I have is 4mm but you can also use thinner or thicker depending on the type of climbing rope available. It’ll have a high breaking point which is the main thing
Could I ask where you get your buckles and D-rings from please, I just can’t seem to find the right ones x
Of course! Buckles I get from paracord.eu and d-rings I either get from there or petsbitsonline. I’m not sure of recommendations outside of Britain or Europe unfortunately, but hopefully that helps! Occasionally I try to find new places and just search 20mm quick release buckles or similar (but I find most now come from a 3rd party)
Great, thank you!
How did you connect the two colors? Did you light them and use the needles nose Pilars to bond it together ?
Yes that’s exactly what I did! I don’t worry about it being too pretty as it’s hidden in the braid. I remove some of the inner cord to make joining easier.
What mm size is your paracord? Any suggestions or links where to buy multipack of different colors ?? Fantastic tutorial 🙏🙏🙏
It’s 550 or type 3 which is about 4mm thick. If you’re in the UK I get mine from paracord emporium on Etsy or if I’m doing a big stock order from paracord.eu (although their delivery prices to the UK are quite high as they’re in the Netherlands)
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Thankyou 🙏. I’m actually in spain so Il have to check. I’ve been making these a while but with a slightly different method and they come out looking exactly the same , but I’m going to try your method to see which I prefer . Very clear video . All my best to you 😻🐶🥰
Love this video! Question. If I need a 20inch collar would I need 20ft of each color or would it be 20ft total between the 2 colors?
You would need 10ft of each colour. Although I always do a couple inches more of one so it’s tucked in the braid and the join isn’t in the starter knot or you risk it coming apart with the pressure!
May I enquire as to where you purchase your Metal buckles and D rings from? Also what size are they? 😊
I have a variety from different places. If you’re UK based I would recommend petsbitsonline as they are in the UK. Otherwise I mostly get them from paracord.eu Size-wise it entirely depends on your dog but I usually go 10mm for xs or cats, ~15mm for small dogs, 20mm for medium dogs (or small but stocky breeds like staffies or working cocker spaniels) and 25mm for large dogs. If you use 25mm I wouldn’t pull the cord so tight as it will look weirdly skinny compared to the buckle! And I would do 1.5ft of cord to every inch of braid to account for the extra width (ie 10” collar would need 15ft of cord) Hope this helps!
@@d.i.ypetaccessories thank you 🙏
How do you 'connect' the 2 colors? Using a lighter to melt the ends, but how do you keep the ends steady to melt them together?
I either melt them very well and then use both hands or I use a candle so I don’t have to hold a lighter. Either way I press them together until they have completely cooled
Where do you get the metal clips? I love this video and want to make it for me dog!
Sorry for the long wait! I get mine either from petbitsonline or paracord.eu as I’m in Scotland. You can get side release clips anywhere, I try to look out for people who put breaking loads on their sites but metal clips are usually super sturdy with very high breaking loads.
Thank you!!
I bough them on aliexpress:)
Hey! Could you also show how to make a harness? 🙏🏼
Yes of course I can. I’m very behind with my videos but I’m aiming to set a day aside soon to power through some and get them going regularly again!
I've already made 2 of these and love them! I used the Manny Method for joining my 2 colors so that it's a much stronger join and didn't have to off-center them. 😉
It’s like you’re a mind reader! I was going to do a video on both methods for those asking about it. I still like to off centre it just so you can’t see the join, but that’s just a personal preference
pls more diy pet accessories :)
My most recent video went up last week! ☺️ a different braid for January. My next video will be out the first week in February in preparation for Valentine’s day
Perfect :) @@d.i.ypetaccessories
Great video! Could you please let me know what colors you used? I would like to know their exact names. Thank you!
This particular paracord I bought from Etsy, unfortunately the names are just ‘mint’ and ‘baby pink’!
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Thank you!
I made a 2 color bracelet for my son and after a few weeks of wearing it, it broke where I joined the 2 colors. What am I doing wrong?
Did you use paracord for the bracelet? I’m only asking as different materials react differently. I’ll try to get a video up about joining two sections but the manny method might be the best to ensure it stays. I’ll aim to get that up this week (I am so behind with videos!)
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Yes, I used black 550 and green 550 paracord and burned them together. Is there a possibility I’m making my cobra braid too tight? Looking forward to seeing your tutorial! Also, if I burn the 2 ends together, do I hide that place I burned it inside the bracelet or up by the buckle?
Como se llama ese tipo de hilo
How much should these sell for , also how much should the leads sell for? I have no idea what people are willing to pay x
Hi, honestly it really depends on where you are and what platforms you sell on. Bare in mind fees on certain platforms, Etsy takes about 15% and websites are pricey. For a basic price work out the cost of materials and any postage/packaging materials and delivery costs. Make sure to charge for your time too. I usually think how much I would want to make per hour and divide it by how many I can make in an hour. Then it would be fees on top of that. It’s not too tricky once you get into the habit, and don’t be dissuaded by bigger companies selling for cheaper (they have the equipment to speed up and cheapen the process) or sellers on platforms like Etsy selling for cheap, these are usually drop-shippers or they haven’t accounted for additional costs over the materials. Good luck!
How do you count it in centimeters? I am so lost when it comes to converting this :)
Honestly I don’t I just stick to inches and feet as it converts easier in my head (1 inch = 1 foot of cord). We use the metric system here but for this the imperial system is just easier. Otherwise I’d put the inches you need into a converter and you’d have to do the same for feet! It doesn’t convert as easily x
How do you know what sizes to make to sell since dogs are all different?
I have a personalisation box on my shop for customers to put in their pet’s measurements. I make sure to state that they’re made to measure o accurate measuring is vital.
What size buckle and d ring did you use
Hi, that all depends on the size of your dog. Typically I use 20mm for my dog and small/medium dogs. 15mm for xs dogs and 25mm for big dogs
If the cords go apart this can causes accidents while the dog is walking?
Hi, yes if you have the cords where the buckle attaches and they come apart then the collar likely won’t stay together, you might catch it before it comes away completely, this is another reason I put the join in the braid, as this won’t happen. There is another method to join cord which I will aim to video soon that is much stronger and won’t come apart.
What size rope do you use I want a thick collar for my German shepherd with a at least a one inch clasp…
Hi, my current videos are using 550 or type 3 (4mm) cord. I use this on my 1 inch collar too but a thicker cord would be better if you can get it. 550 seems to be the thickest before you go into ropes. You can do what’s called a king cobra braid which is a cobra braid over a cobra braid. I’ll do a video on that soon. It is thicker though so I would add extra length for it to be comfortable
I use 6mm & always find I get some shrinkage on the overall length by the time I’m finished. Is adding 1.5” a general rule for adding to the overall length? Xxx
Hi! Is this double cobra knot or regular cobra knot?😁
Hi, this is the regular cobra knot, I’ll try to get a video up with the bigger version (work life is crazy right now, I’m so behind!!)
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Thank you so much!
Hi where did you get your paracord from?
If I just need a small amount there is someone on Etsy I use, but usually paracord.eu for larger amounts.
Hi what size d ring is best
It depends on the size of your buckle but you want it to match. If you’re using a 20mm buckle you’ll want a 20mm d ring. Buckle size will depend on your dog’s size, a rough guideline is 15mm for small dogs like chihuahuas, 20mm for medium dogs like staffies, spaniels etc and 25mm for bigger dogs like labradors.
What size paracord are you using?
For these I use 550 or type 3 (same thing) cord but for cat collars I’ll either use type 1
How do u join 2 colors together?
I’ll be doing a video on this shortly x
Is it 13 ft of cord x's 2?
Hi! Sorry for taking so long to respond. If the collar is 13" in length the total amount of cord will be 13ft. If you're using 2 colours like I did here then it will be 6.5ft of each colour (although I like to round up a little to give me extra to work with).
Is it 13' total or 13' of each color?
13 feet total. It’s a foot for every inch of braid regardless of the number of colours so I would just half it (or make one colour slightly longer so the join is hidden in the braid)
How thick is the cord? 1mm?
Hi, the cord in this video is 4mm thick. If you search for type 3 or 550 paracord it will bring up the right size ✨
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Thank you so much! I am from Europe so I find it difficult to unterstand how much rope we need. How many meters of rope did you use for the collar?
Hi. Just seen your video. I have some 1 inch buckle clasps. I had to use 4 strings to fit across at the first buckle, I ended up with 8 on male clip. I can't figure out how to do the knots on that end. I tried what you've done but isn't working for me. Could you please help? Lol
Hi, if you’re trying to do what I think you are then yes! I’ll try and get a video up before I scurry off on holiday x
@@d.i.ypetaccessories Thank You so much. Yes I didn't connect the strings together at the first and that's how I started with 4.

I think names will depend on sellers, but commonly they’re called baby pink and mint green (I hope this translates well for you!)

Español por favor
Very nice tutorial and one of the best I’ve seen so far. Liked every step of it except the finishing part. A bit to bulky for my liking.
Slowwwwwwly
As in you’d like me to go slower in the instructions? I’ll keep that in mind for future videos! With the video if it helps you could slow the playback speed. I do that when I watch crochet videos as they’re always too quick! I’ll make sure to make my steps slower in future.
Am I the only one who finds to have a lot left over if the do 1 foot for every inch
I usually have about a foot of each strand left over at the end, but not much more. If you find you have way too much you can always experiment with smaller measurements (eg 8” of cord per 1” of braid or similar)
