Aside from all the love/hate for BB or john. The drummer for this did a fantastic job, he gave both players what they needed to jam like this, everyone needs a backup like this, blues didn't happen without a little rhythm

I'm glad someone pointed it out, the backing band read every little clue that was given to them by the B.B. and John. They gave the guitarists exactly what they wanted around every corner, and sometimes even gave them the twist they weren't expecting but was exactly right for the flow of the song

1:05 - the line by BB and Johns "awkward" line in response, followed by his giddy, almost embarrassed yearning for approval from BB IS the most priceless moment of John's Career. BB is so fucking classy. He seems short and crass at first, almost as if he doesn't like john but it quickly becomes apparent that he appreciates his talent and youth, even if he has no patience for johns ego.

One thing I'm being aware of, is that, when you're playing the blues, sometimes your own style and your essence tells you what to play, when you try to do more than what you're musicality is telling you, sometimes the blues kicks you back and you sound awful 😂 I can tell that BB has a style much more melodic and calm, and that's what makes him so interesting, not too much notes, just the right feel. Others like srv and Albert king, they're own style tells them to be that fast, and that's what we sometimes don't understand 😅 I'm starting to learn that I have to flow with the blues, talk with the music, feel my own rhythm and style. And man, that a hard way to go! Greetings, blessings and what a good comment!! 🔥🎶🌀🏞️

Been reading some comments underneath and it seems like most people thinks it`s all about speed and technique, John Mayer holding back or trying to outshine BB, etc. To be honest I`m pretty shocked. My advice: stop listening and start really listening. Of course, when it comes to mastering a guitar, there is no hidden fact that John Mayer is on another level. However, when it comes to making music, finding the right connections of notes and most of all feeling it, BB is simply outstanding. Just listen to the fantastic licks by The King. Do people think he became the king by being the most technical player 60 years ago? Stop looking at the guitar like it`s just a piece of materiel and start listening to what comes out of it. Think about it this way. If you listening to one song compared to another, would you say that the fastest and most technical song was the best? No, because music is about getting touched, whether it`s rock or a soft song. The point is that it doesn't matter. And what do we do with a guitar? We make music and that`s what it`s all about. What is the point of playing 10 notes if 1 note can show you so much more?
@1234268blablabla9 жыл бұрын
Smartman Additionally, the semi-hollow body guitar that BB plays (Gibson ES-335) has a deeper and richer tone than John's Strat. It's really perfect for blues. It's not as EASY to play as a thinner bodied, solid wood guitar but BB isn't concerned with "easy". BB's mindset is QUALITY just as you're stating here.
@VitalityMassage9 жыл бұрын
Smartman look at buddy guy his style is pretty fast but he can make u feel things ! i think like you that music if for expressing before every thing but it doesn't mean that slow gonna express more than fast is juste that if u do it with soul you gonna have your own style and gonna express and unique message and how you do it is juste up to you.Like a mirror for your soul
@AstralGamingStyle9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Rodrigues And how exactly does that make you disagree with me? Just because I think BB King expresses more than John Mayer doesn't mean that I necessarily think that a fast guitar lick or solo is less soulful than a slow. Read carefully to what I wrote about music. "It doesn't matter" as long as the music reaches you. However a good guitar solo is like a good speech and most times you don't need that many words to express yourself. You gave me buddy guy as an example which by the way is one of my great favorites, I give you SRV.
@1234268blablabla9 жыл бұрын
Smartman because you were saying that slow express more than fast and that's not the problem fast or slow, it's what the solos mean

mattsucksatmusic same reason I am watching this but JM should have just relaxed. The way to prove your greatness when you’re so privileged enough to play next to the greatest is to do as if you have nothing to prove and just enjoy the moment. That is greatness in itself. Technically couldn’t shine for itself because he was busy trying to outdo the master. Take Clapton on the other hand. He is technically a blues master in his own right, yet he treats King as blues royalty. There’s a difference in that.

0:33 BB keeps hearing John repeating his major thirds he loves to throw in. BB knows this musical theme all to well, he knows why John likes it, he throws a lick that maybe Coltrane and Sonny and even Milt Jackson used to do, an inverted arpeggio that sings 5 - 8 - 3 -4 and trills between the 3 and 4, teetering between sustain and resolving, and he can resolve to the 3, or to the dominant 5 and land on a resounding 1. Where's he gonna go? Beautiful phrase that I remember playing many times on tenor.

Aside from all the love/hate for BB or john. The drummer for this did a fantastic job, he gave both players what they needed to jam like this, everyone needs a backup like this, blues didn't happen without a little rhythm
Drummer was on point. Thanks for pointing that out.
I'm glad someone pointed it out, the backing band read every little clue that was given to them by the B.B. and John. They gave the guitarists exactly what they wanted around every corner, and sometimes even gave them the twist they weren't expecting but was exactly right for the flow of the song
*squidward voice* nobody ever thinks about the drummer
You don't play with BB King unless you are top of the class
Pretty sure I can hear some keys in there as well
John Mayer is there like he is really appreciating being baptized by the King of Blues guitar. So glad he had that special time with BB before he passed away. And BB seems like he is really enjoying the influence he has had on John and is really digging John's playing. What a joy to have come across this piece of musical history!

You articulated that very well
Wow!! Your comment is so on point, it made the video this much better. Thanks a lot pal!

BB's timing is unbelievable and his minimalist approach is almost unattainable. The true master of less is more but yet saying something so emotional. And John is my favorite singer-songwriter guitar player of his generation.

Chris Parisot it’s all about the soul....
Smartman Additionally, the semi-hollow body guitar that BB plays (Gibson ES-335) has a deeper and richer tone than John's Strat. It's really perfect for blues. It's not as EASY to play as a thinner bodied, solid wood guitar but BB isn't concerned with "easy". BB's mindset is QUALITY just as you're stating here.
Smartman because you were saying that slow express more than fast and that's not the problem fast or slow, it's what the solos mean
Daniel Rodrigues WTF. I did just give you the answer above, and then you just write the same thing all over again. This discussion was over in my last sentence. Didn't you understand me? End of discussion man.
Merciful God, I pray for your provision to overflow in the lives of this cherished friend and their household. May they lack no good thing, and may your abundant blessings empower them to be a blessing to others, spreading your love and kindness wherever they go.

John is good but when BB get on I just feel it way more
5:47 hahahahha john just fell in love, it's great to see the admiration on his face and real respect for those that came before him. edit/ I just realised something very interesting about this performance and their body language. Notice how BB is facing forwards playing for the crowd, playing the show, while john is almost always facing BB. John is playing for BB trying to earn his respect. It's almost like a master/servant relationship playing out on stage.
I think you're almost spot on. John idolizes BB. He's a legend in the Blues community. He's getting to play alongside him and just bask in the moment. I can't blame him. If I got to jam with my guitar idol, I'd probably act similar. It's awesome to see him looking like a little kid in some moments.
Agreed. John absolutely loves and respects BB, and it's obvious by his playing and the look on his face. He didn't want to miss a moment of watching his hero play right in front of him.
Fuck me, that was absolutely incredible. The duel (might have been in part 1) seriously brought tears. And the band: Best of the best, I'm thinking. Never missed a change, always right there. An incredible set, one of my absolute favorites.

BB King was quite simply a giant. He was in his late 70s when this was filmed. I'm not a huge Blues fan but you can just tell the man was a genius. John Mayer is a good guitarist. I think he deserves credit for having the balls for performing alongside the maestro.

5:45 JOHN MAYER FALLING IN LOVE

BB King and John Mayer is an epic combination.
All I can say playing guitar is like riding a skateboard you develop style effortless style , when I first watched this video my ego was telling me, Mayer I love you and you have created pure magic but don’t be disrespected the king like that and then I felt like bb was being rude in return but now I have come to the conclusion that this is pure love, a clash of beauty and extreme skill between 2 musicians this must of been a true dream realised by John and bb loved the beauty of a younger outstanding guitar player, would love to see these two play together again . Sadly that will never happen RIP bb’s beautiful soul ❤️ iv enjoyed this for years
Without even telling him BB KING was teaching John Mayer live on stage the way of the Jedi! #MasterYodaKing
the blues is strong wih you young padawan
I feel like the whole video is about BB giving blues lessons to John Mayer. And the best part is it's awesome👍😍
7:15 I like Mayer's aknowledgement of BB's little flourish there. They look like they are having blast and who could blame them. They're both playing with one of the greats.
To sit there and resonate with the King... I bet that was a vision he saw since he was young.
It’s one of those sleepless nights and I finally found the video I never knew I needed
mattsucksatmusic same reason I am watching this but JM should have just relaxed.
I don't know whats cooler, watching Mayer vs BB, or watching the Strat Vs the Gibson.
Bb is overwhelmed cause he never knew he would influence somebody so great or even generations in the past and to come. I saw John live he is amazing. He can play the blues. The blues is aboutta feeling. We all as blues players feel that sincere feeling. If you Hate on John you are not a true blues player. Blues guys love othe blues guys cause only we understand what eachother feel.
Jack R. BB influenced SRV himself what you talking about
BB looks annoyed to me. John is just wanking like a dork.
There are 2 really different slices of the truth, what is actually going on in BB's head is another slice, and everyone else has their own slice. I don't really read Mayer's soul, in his playing here but I love his technique and touch.
BB is not 'overwhelmed'. He thought JM a very good guitarist but didn't like him personally...thought he needed a little more humility.
@@tootz1950 did bb tell u that?
Two legends of music in their own rights from their respective generations, came together to create something monumentally soul piercing. This is absolutely magical!
I almost "came" listening to this! Life can be good. Thank you to all the musicians that make our lives better.
Both virtuosos in their own right, but even virtuosos have masters. BB King is the King of Blues!
Obviously BB and John are both great guitar players and musicians, but the thing that makes this performance so impactful is the connection that all five musicians are making with each other as BB and John have their conversation. Just phenomenal!
They just fed off of each other's energies, it's so wholesome
JM is hella cute being around one of his idols. Can't help but smile!
this is like the feeling you get when you seriously jam for the first time with your guitar teacher.
I never get bored no matter how many times i listen to this masterpiece, get goosebumps every time !
I love watching musicians visibly feeling every note they play.
mayers solo after he said this is my last go around was the best.... his last chance to show bb what he had inside him... and he nailed it.
This is incredible. Mayor is a master but understands he is still the student here. Love when Mayer reacts to BB's lick at 0:27.
And Mayer reaction at 7:16 shows the respect he has for BB Kings feel.
i hope i get to have a guitar conversation like that with someone one day. just swapping licks and having a damn good time.
Brilliant. Merci BB KING for your Patience… i love John Mayer also. :) From Paris! Bless YOU All GUYS.
They are not playing music, they are music ❤
John's nervous in front of BB. He usually plays with much more soul, but who could blame him haha.
Both are Great
Mayer's great, but I have never heard him playing so tight and really out of sync with the rhythm section. You can say what you want but he caved that night. Couldn't handle the pressure. It's so obvious when you compare it to any of his other playing. He's drunk and or way too high also. Talking so much utter Bullshit.
