Taran seems like the kind of guy who gives perfectly good feedback, but shouldn't be let anywhere near the solution design.
He's a power power user, putting normal power users to shame. He'll squeeze every drop of blood from the stone and if there's anything standing in the way, he'll become very annoyed about that. So he's a good consultant for making sure the extreme customization is available, but his advice is not good for designing the standard use case.
I totally agree. As a software developer I can see why they don't really listen to him that much. But I also understand most of his points are somehow valid. And oh boy that GUI is terrible.
No, his ranting makes his complaints look outsized and a wee bit insane, but they're COMPLETELY valid. Like the most simple actions - changing brush size, hardness, and zoom, jogging around on a timeline, selecting different clips at will, changing color settings - just DO. NOT. WORK. The latency, granularity, and ease of use are all absolutely dogshit. I would be incredibly pissed off if I had paid $800 plus tax and the menu system was completely unusable.

More likely UX designers that accidentally got close to it during development got serious PTSD.
It kind of reminds me of Asprite (but less usable). I'll always find it weird when a program comes with a menu style that deviates strongly from the operating systems art style.

As a frontend dev, this software just screams we made our devs come up with the design. They are in desperate need if a good professional ui designer.
ikr, I am not even professional but this is my thought. What's the target market? It is a niche market that aims the professionals especially with $800 price tag. Most of professionals that I know have little to none care about design interface, even if you ask them, it would be at the end of the list. Top 3 of the answers from professionals might be: Functionality as in do the job perfectly as intended Reliability Ease of use A designer do not care about the beauty of the software as long as rhe software can produce the beauty.
I genuinely think its one of the worst user interfaces I've ever seen
When you sell a tool it should be functionality first then they should focus on design/look Even just looking at That small menu was so annoying

It honestly looks like it was designed in a week or two. I think they also need a good product manager, since a good one would have likely caught a lot of the things that were covered here, especially in regards to UI usability.

y’all gotta review your ui/ux, maybe run it through user testing or open up a forum for users to discuss different areas of improvement/what you got right. Run through your target audiences, and maybe user interviews to fully grasp what your users want to solve the problems your product aims to solve. Your product seem really interesting and appealing, just gotta push the UI/UX teams just as much as your engineering and development teams. It would be a waste of your investment and your employees hard work to let your product not succeed because the UI/UX bottlenecks it/dissuades customers from purchasing your items in the future.

you are consulting targeted audience in "finishing UI" stage huh? If the input delay comes from something else than translating your JSON (or whatever format) map to actual command, your hardware is far from perfect.

Despite how disorganized this was I really appreciate the style of Taran videos. His frustration, but reasonable understanding of why things are frustrating is extremely relatable. I am not biased at all as a developer....
this is exactly the kind of video I need when thinking about this stuff. Someone that's there doing it for real with tonnes of experience at all levels from user to developer. If the Verge covered this you'd learn whether it aesthetically blends in with Ikea furniture and where the on/off switch is after lots of aimless prodding. I just wish Taran made more videos.

Linus have been very clear about his need to have something educative in every video. So any product review that don't have that no-longer go there. I understand, it's how it work best and they have people to pay, but i am a bit sad to see good content dumped or compressed on a sub channel.

That was one of the best usability reviews from a customer I could ever wish for. It's clear that they don't have any UX resources or don't care about it and it's not a part of their production/design process. Huuuuge shoutout to Taran for being so passionate about it and giving all his thoughts - UX designers around the world wish they'd have users like you :D

I'd love it if my customers sent me such detailed feedback, though. There's obviously a discrepancy between Taran's expectations and the real-life development lifecycle, but customer feedback is extremely helpful most of the time.

@@Syrinx222 you'd think but when I provided feedback on a sound effects pack I bought from a certain creator (merely to support them), they apparently didn't appreciate my professional and courteous criticism of charging $xx for recordings of them literally blowing into a microphone and calling it various "wind noises". Not a single sound was usable from this very reputable KZheadr. Formerly reputable to me, I guess.
As someone who builds UIs for a living, i would kill for that level of feedback
It's a huge strength of this channel that you have so many different presenters. This video and Taran's experience is a great example of this. Because of his work you can tell he needed to get into the nitty gritty of this device, and it resulted in a really informative video. As opposed to having everything dumped on one person who has to do their best to care, this yields really strong content.
Honestly, I could have watched the hour long or more version of this. Watching someone who is passionate about their work talk about things is fascinating to me. I watch stuff I have no interest in just to broaden my views on things. Keep up the fantastic work Taran!
Really looks like the hardware team did a good job, but nobody really cared about the software. So if they made the software open source, I think there would be a lot of potential, because then we could at least make our own software for it (and have Linux support :p).
Not having Linux support is a dumb idea. I want more competition because BlackMagic asks for a ridiculous ammount for their interface (not that it isnt't worth it, its just a bokers price point).
I think it's more that they have so much to do that they lack the manpower to do it, but yeah open source might've been a good idea

Like he said in the video. A lot of it is on Adobe. Which means it'll never be as good as it could and should be. They're notoriously bad at... well... most things. Apart from market lock in lol.

Taran's videos are amazing. The expertise is great to watch, and the finicky expectations / feedback are completely justified when working with these products. Love it.
I'm a big input guy also, mostly gathered over time to improve ergonomics for drafting work. Tracker ball & 3D mice, wacom pen and pad, wireless x-pen hand held 10 key/dial combo. This is too much for me but I just really enjoy the in depth thoroughness and earnest relay of as much information as possible. Great video.

It's cool to see a manufacturer/Dev so willing to receive feedback and improve, even if the end product isn't at the level Taran wanted.
Your passion is incredible bro!!! I could feel it through this video!!! I honestly think that LTT should work with a company and you can consult in developing the control surface of dreams. If LTT can get an open source project out of this using 3D printing, Arduino or RPi then that would be even more epic!

Taran always reminds me of Lt. Barkley in that TNG episode where he gets super smart and ends up using his brain to interface directly with the ship's computer because using the regular controls was too slow

I think that a customizable macro control surface is an absolutely amazing idea! This seems to be a little bit early in development, but if they can get some of those efficiency issues all worked out with the software, this would absolutely be something I'd consider buying.
I love Taran, he's so passionate, particular and pedantic. Please have him do more reviews of interface devices, I don't care about them but his passion is captivating.

In SC I'm sure the host are scriptless that's why Taran is basically just ranting the whole video not reviewing the pros and cons because that's not the content for SC. I do wish this is featured on LTT so Taran could order his thoughts into a script and details the actual good and bad experience of the product eventhough I would never buy or need this product.
