  • you sense the Magnus era is coming to an end - it started with his choice not to overtake Kasparov for years as World Champion - his motivation is waning and this World Cup win is likely to accelerate that sense of accomplishment being fulfilled - it is likely he will soon sit at the table one of these days and simply lose his will to win - the burden of having to uphold the standard of being "Magnus Carlsen" every time he plays is HEAVY - he is expected to win every tournament he enters - news that he won is met mostly with indifference - certainly not surprise - it is only when he loses that the media becomes attentive - 2nd place is seen as a failure - think about that - you can ONLY be considered to have had a good tournament if you win each and every time - but who does that? - most players can at least be satisfied with playing well and coming in 2nd or 3rd - you can almost sense his passion for chess is dissipating within him - I would not be too surprised at all if he simply stops playing in the middle of a game - sits up - smiles - stands - shakes hands with his opponent and walks out of the room having played his last move ... it happens like that

  • Great interview. I love how Magnus is respectful and also very careful with his words. How he doesn't just slide over questions when there's more than one topic packaged into the question. Great interviewer allowing him to speak and at the same time specific and interesting questions. The one thing I'd be really curious to know (and I'm not sure if Magnus has said this in other interviews either) is when Magnus says that he's not a fan of the World Championship (or the candidates) in it's "current format" -- what does he mean by that? What about the current format isn't appealing to him anymore? Or conversely, what about the current format, if changed, would see him be enthusiastic and interested in playing the match/tournament? Anyone know?

    @burner918@burner9188 ай бұрын
    • He doesn't enjoy the classical games anymore. He prefers a much larger number of rapid games, like 24-30 of them, with 2 games per day over many days. I think I heard this in his podcast with Lex Fridman, but I'm not sure.

      @SharatS@SharatS8 ай бұрын
    • Current format is more time & less matches (2+2;1+1 with 30 sec increment ; then 30 min each for rest of games ; first 40 moves , then 20, then rest) magnus wants less time like 1+1 with increment & more matches 24/30 etc

      @dr.utkarshshaha1978@dr.utkarshshaha19788 ай бұрын
    • He's already said it a couple of times: he prefers shorter time controls, and more games. He likes the idea of two games per day for these big classical tournaments.

    • 12:12 "ok, this is nerves" - this is when the shark smells blood in the water. I've never heard Magnus talk like this before. I mean he let us into his truly chess professional thinking. maybe when he was talking to lex fridman he allowed himself to be so revealing. and then 13:13 "this is youth". this interview is pure gold.
