  • If you are a single guy, a Lab will be better than any lady you will ever meet! They are loyal, playful, kind, and couldn't care less about how you dress, money, status, or anything. Just feed them and give some attention.

    • i do little an my labs are happy and there 5 month old pups they love the rope toy i hold it and they try to take it. i throw a ball down the hallway they get it and i do it again maybe 20times and thats enough to tucker them out. i just crate train them for night time im not going to do what i did last time wake up to messes or biting thing like wires so its for there safety. i only had them a month and the are making great progress for rescue pups. i like to off leash train them and have the one sister overcome lud sounds outside i had chokers but she panic's over a trash bin or car door slam, ambulance that she will hurt herself so i got a leash that pull there heads down killing all there pull power its night and day difference and it not near there airway. i just had to try new things see what works and doesnt and they are learning.

I’ve had dogs my whole adult life in various sizes such as German Shepherd, Malinois, West Highland White Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Shih Tzu and Chihuahua. Our Chihuahua was by far the most challenging one next to our children 😂. Our little black lab is now 6 weeks old and is coming home to us in just 2 weeks ❤️. It will be our first Labrador but I think we can handle her 😉.

During his lifespan we covered over 15,000 miles; strolling in the neighborhood, hiking in the woods or walking on the C&O Canal path. Everybody loved Loki. He had a fanbase wherever we went. • It's ridiculous to say that. The breed -- actually all "retriever" breeds come with these issues. They were bred to be active, comfortable with humans, and part of a social group. That's why they need exercise and companionship. The shedding results from the double coat, which all labs have.

We just had to put down our oldest due to larangeal paralysis which is common in labs and horses. I'm still going to be looking for another or two or three when the time is right. Wonderful dogs!!!

  • Labradors are heaven sent to make life better. They are eternal toddlers that melt your heart on a daily basis with only a requirement of food and love. They are the best workers, beggars, foot warmers, and arm rests. Train them early and consistently and integrate them as family. I have been fortunate to have had female black labs that spanned decades of companionship and I hope to see them again one day when everything is all said and done in this life. There are differences between male and female in behavior and labs are basically 30 years old at the end of their first birthday, not 7. Fortunately, they are one of the easiest and cutest to train up. When it comes to labs, they don’t do things wrong. It’s always going to be because you aren’t doing something right and you need to figure it out and communicate that to them more clearly. Remember, they’re heaven sent to love you! Best Regards.

  • I put my 12 year old black lab (Voldemort) down three weeks ago and have done my share of crying since then. In my over half century on this planet I've always had a dog in the family and he was the best: friendly, loyal, just a great companion all around and boy was he smart. If the back door was not closed all the way he taught himself how to let himself out with his snout and would use his paws to let himself back in. Yes he did shed a lot - So muich so that we had to pay hundreds to get the hairs out of the HVAC coils even if we changed the filters monthly. Also, he often wake me up in the middle of the night and not because he had to go out but because he was lonely. What really hurt was that if I had been asked a month ago how long he had to go I would have said a year at least, maybe two. He stopped eating on Thanksgiving Day so I took him to the vet on that Friday. On Saturday they callled and said it was cancer and at his age nothing really to do but say goodbye. A heavy price to pay for joyous years.

  • My earliest memory. We were at the animal shelter, we wanted a black lab. I couldnt have been older than 3 at this point. First, we are brought a nice gentle lab, already trained, the perfect family pet. Then, my father asks to see the other one ‘Dustin’. The vet had a look of fear on her face. “Dustin? Are you sure?” My father insisted. She went to get him. Suddenly, a dog, who was covered in his own shit bursts through the door, sees me, and pounces. I start screaming. Dustin is quickly taken away. Later, my father says to my mom “I think I wanna get Dustin”. We had him for about 10 years before he passed, and it was one of the best decisions my father ever made.

  • Black labs are true companions and must be trained properly. Everything in this video is accurate, but I feel like this video is solidifying why you should get one if youre willing to commit. overall it comes down to just being a good dog owner. The issues presented in the video are common across many breeds, and it's probably a zero sum game because every breed has different negatives, BUT every dog is trainable. My experience is coming from about 23 years of having black labs. Like most dogs, proper taining, love and excersise is what's needed.

  • We have a 5 yr old black lab male. We are in the process of adopting an 18 week female. Ive owned many different breeds of dogs and colors. These dogs are by far the best mannered, intellegent and affectionate dogs ever. Black dogs are most commonly surrendered to shelters because people are morons if they think a dogs color defines them as good or bad. The stupidest thing Ive ever heard. Its like putting a kid up for adoption because their eyes are brown instead of blue. This infuriates me.

He learned so fast that I didn't train him, handled all situations with perfect aplomb. Him and my old horse were great friends. The second was a chow mix, and she was the opposite! • Adopted Sherlock from Broward Humane Society in November of 2021. He was flown in with 60 other rescues from Baton Rouge LA. He was a handsome and sweet black lab that appeared healthy. The vet said he had 3 intestinal parasites that he treated him for and would gain 15 lbs which he did. A year later he seemed fine but tested positive for heart worm. Apparently with a negative test initially and put on heartworm preventative immediately there is a window where the dog tests negative but will turn positive and should be rechecked in 90 days.Today he is a happy, healthy but very energetic dog. He needs to play and run a lot as the video talks about. If you adopt a black lab you will have a loyal and loving companion. Just make sure you are ready to get up and out to exercise every day!😎👍

  • I watched this video because I just acquired a black lab mix and was curious about the negative connotation in the title. While watching I realized this is really a pro-black lab video! It explains what you need to be willing to do to make your black lab a happy and healthy addition to your family! If you're not able to provide the time, attention, and energy that this wonderful breed needs, then that would be totally unfair to him/her! And you need to consider another breed altogether. My new rescue Lila, was gifted to me (they knew I wanted a dog after losing my beloved Schipperke) by amazing friends and coworkers and after months of screening shelter dogs, they knew she was just perfect for me!! After meeting her at the shelter with my family, we quickly knew she was the one, and we brought her home. She is sweet, loving, and amazing with other dogs. 🥰💗🐕🦮 Someone is home often to play with and shower her with the love and attention she needs and deserves! We love her and will happily provide her with all that she needs to be happy, healthy and well adjusted. Thank you for sharing this informative video! 💖

  • I just lost my 13yr old black lab/border collie (best guess) rescue. She was all black lab with a white patch on her chest though. She had a rough start to life. Seized from a home w/32 other dogs and cats, went to a vet training clinic, then to a rescue. With patients, redirecting behaviors, and love, she became a once in a lifetime amazing best friend. She lived in our 3 cats world. A 60lb dog bowing to our 12lb cat that owns the house, ignoring the 10lb Princess Kitty, and belonged to 13lb cat Bass. 3 months after Bass passed she just wasn’t healing from him passing, so we got her a kitty, who came w/a crazy sister that is now my shadow. Once Marlin got used to B (the big scary dog) they became buddies, and our B was back to her happy self. When we’re ready, we will get another black lab mix. My husband and I while growing up just had better dogs of mix breed. My dream in life is to run a black dog&cat rescue, as they are the least likely to be adopted. BBD syndrome, big black dog. When I learned the statistics of all black/mostly black dogs and cats rescue rates it broke my heart. 🤞🏼 I win the lottery one day.

  • Your video, and comments below, are excellent and true to this great breed. I'm glad that you present it as instructional not criticisms. All dogs require attention and good care. I have had wonderful dogs of high breeding and some off the street. But Labs are amazing. Anyone of good heart who brings a lab into their life will be inspired by the affection (and laughs) they provide.

I think it is shameful to single out a dog by its color. I have had a couple chocolate labs and they were no different than my black ones. • I don’t have a black labs but I do have two chocolate labs. I started with one and then a year later got a second. Full disclosure I live in an apartment in Houston. I did TONS of research before getting a dog and labs were on the list of “apartment friendly” as long as you are active. I will say my two labs could not be more different, my first one (male) is very calm attentive, self sufficient and brilliant. My second (girl) is a Tasmanian Devil lol and tons of energy but loves to cuddle. Oh my boy never barks while my girl barks at everything with even her own reflection. Now my first was with me every single day as I worked from home when I got him he was the EASIEST dog to train! Literally potty trained in two days and so easy with any thing! My girl dog I got for company for the first when I went back to office life, in the beginning I thought I may have made a mistake as her training experience was SOOOO different. She took 4-5month to fully potty train, I had to crate train her as she is quite destructive (where as my boy is the opposite and gets free roam when I’m not home) what got me through her training was constantly remembering it was a different tracing experience lol. Now FULL disclosure, like I said they are GREAT apartment dogs IF (and it’s a HUGE if) you are willing to tailor your life around having Labs. I take them for a MINIMUM of 3 walks a day but it’s usually 4, they go to the dog park at least 4-5 times a week! Pros, they become so socialized with other people and other dogs you could literally take them anywhere. Cons, the commitment is NO JOKE! Lol my friends get annoyed “oh I can’t because of the pups, or oh I have to be home by this time” and ALOT of exercise. Also HAIR, sooooo much hair! It’s ALL year round! I could vacuum my house 12 times and their would still be hair everywhere! I’ve literally gotten a fresh apple from the fridge, but into it…hair lol.All that said, my dogs have unlocked a part in my heart I never knew I had. I couldn’t imagine my life with out them! Love them soooooo much! The best part of my day is coming home and seeing their beautiful faces!

    • black labs and chocolate labs are the same dog with a color mutation they are all Labrador retrievers they are the same bread of dog only with different coats. some say that they have different temperaments and for a long time were not regarded has equal but two black labs can have a chocolate lab pups. two chocolate labs can have a black lab pup and both black and chocolate labs can have a white/golden labs. Labradors unlike what most people think can have many coats not exclusively black. they range from solid black, black with some white markings, black with some dark brown mixed in (my Labrador was like this it had brown streaks on its back almost like a panther), dark brown, light brown, yellow or gold and finally white it is not actually white it is a very pale shade of yellow that resembles white. my grand father had a kennel and he bread dogs i have seen many puppies and it is rare for a Labrador to have exclusively black babies but they come out black, yellow or brown when it is two black labs their is more chance that the puppies will have the same coat has its parents but you can get 3 black labs and one chocolate lab even when both the parents are black labs it does not work like humans were mom his white dad his white baby will be white you increase the chances with dogs but the gene is still there and the puppies can come out not the same color has his siblings or parents.

  • Maybe title this "7 things to consider before getting a black lab". They are the best, most sweet tempered dogs ever.

    @GeniusByBirth411@GeniusByBirth4116 ай бұрын
  • The title is misleading. It’s not about the colour of the lab but about the elements to consider when adopting a highly energetic dog such as Labrador (of any colour). It’s not applicable just to black Labs. I also find some information questionable. Not all labs have separation anxiety and a dominant leader nature. As a mum of a black lab, all I can tell you is that they are amazing in all colours and sizes. They can be quite independent and get along with other dogs, cats and other animals. It all depends of the environment in which they grew up and how they were trained. All thy need is a caring, loving and responsible human, as all the pets do.

  • After having a black lab for months now, (got her as a puppy) I can definitely say every point up here is true if it is a purebred. My wife and I didn't move around much - until now. I wound up with a rotator cuff tear, she pulled me out the door and onto the ground at 7 months and I'm 310 pounds - when they aren't sleeping they are getting into EVERYTHING, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING IN THEIR MOUTH. PERIOD. She will eat things that I can't believe like plastic, rocks, you name it we have pulled it out of her mouth at least 10 times or more a day. She will get angry and bark at me if I don't take her to the dog park or something, CONSTANTLY BORED she doesn't like laying around unless she has run in circles for an hour. If Me or my wife leave for even 3 minutes, when we come back she acts like we were gone all day, she follows my wife everywhere and goes berserk if she leaves, lucky for us she works at home now and I am home as well so the dog has us constantly. And this is a FEMALE. You must be a strong person who can train or at least direct like a leader, like it says. Anyone who disagrees has a mixed dog or got really lucky lol. The funniest thing was her two favorite toys, first was a plastic lawn dart with the heavy end missing, she went nuts over it because of how it moved, next was a rubber ducky old school squeaker style. She preferred these to almost every other dog toy ever made. If you want to relax, get a great dane or something, this dog will make you move whether you like it or not. I can definitely see it being a great dog to someone who exercises outside, awaiting the 1-3 year mark when they finally calm down. I am not saying it was a mistake to get a black lab, and I wouldn't dare try to separate "Eclipse" from mommie at this point, I am just saying, be ready lol.

But when I'd leave for work he was so heartbroken he would tear up the blinds, coach, and howl & yodel until I was home. He would steal, hoard, and chew my things into a nest so he could feel closer to me.

  • After reading many of the comments, I can't help wondering if I'm the only one who noticed most of the dogs in the video were NOT black Labrador Retrievers. Most of them definitely had other breeds mixed in - one looked like it had maybe dachshund, and more than a few had the long ears of hounds! Also, those with white chests are also not purebred. Sadly, like a lot of other pure breed dogs, popularity has led to many poorly bred animals with an increasing number of health issues. You rarely used to hear of these dogs having any issues at all. Having said that, my aunt used to have a lovely boy, who was 21 when he passed away. When I met him, he was 18 years old, and still enjoying swimming and running around! Back then, they were much better bred for the purpose they were meant for!

  • Have my sister's rescue female black lab. She had her for a year no problems, very high energy though and hard to control with rippling muscles. Sister gave birth to her daughter and first walk out the dog immediately tried to kill a small dog with no warning. Figured out former owner trained her to kill small animals. So dog was sent to her parents for "retirement" but the dog still attempts to attack small dogs even with a muzzle and can almost pull my parents over, myself am barely strong to hold her back sometimes. It's gotten better as she's aged and calmed down a bit but can never let your guard down. She also has massive separation anxiety and 0 independence.

  • This video is pretty silly: The only "bad thing" specifically about a BLACK Lab was that you can see the shed fur in your house. Maybe you can't see the shed fur from a Yellow Lab or a Chocolate Lab so easily, but that's actually a bad thing. Because you should keep your house clean even if you can't see the shed fur. So the real "disadvantages" are actually about all labs. But to most people who want a big strong dog, none of these things are disadvantages. It's good to get an AKC Lab who comes from parents without any of those health problems. It's good if they have a large yard to run around in. It's good they are highly intelligent, easily trained, are sociable, loyal, and polite. Brushing them cuts way down on shedding and it keeps them clean. Maybe best of all, is they have very good instincts: My lab puppies learned to chase balls and retrieve them in a single training session.
