Let's teach for mastery -- not test scores | Sal Khan
Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation? Of course not. Why, then, do we rush students through education when they haven't always grasped the basics? Yes, it's complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace.

Andrew Rodriguez underrated comment
Andrew Rodriguez schools (specially public ones) are too set in their way and won’t loosen their grip. They don’t put the students first.
In India, everyeone sets a target first. Then does everything to achieve that target. No one cares if you have your base clear or not. Just the target. As a result, The people who are able to hit the target, they fail seriously in professionalism. Those who can't achieve the goal, loses his ability to persue for something other. That's a massive flaw in our educational system.
Yup as a result students are after after goals rather than learning
So true. In high schools my teachers always told me that I am bad at Math because my concepts aren't clear but nobody bothered to help out
I just started jee prep, and that is very true. But honestly I've decided that my goal is not the 3000 odd seats for IIT, but rather learning for my passion for science.
@@livethefuture2492 hope you pursue your passion for science. In Bangladesh I have to study in a inhuman way ( like studying 13 hours a day ) just to get into KUET (one of the engineering unis in Bangladesh) . can we all just take a moment to appreciate how much this man has helped us all not only not fail our classes but also inspire us to actually try
Currently during this coronavirus outbreak when we are participating in distance learning, I’ve been enjoying it quite a lot, because I’m truly learning for the love of learning. One thing that was difficult for me, especially in math class, was having to keep up with the quick pace without fully understanding bits and pieces of the content(therefore creating gaps in my knowledge). However, now, I can watch videos of lessons at my own pace, and if I don’t get something, pause and think about it until I understand and figure it out, then continue. This means I’m able to fully fathom concepts instead of memorizing, and that’s been so enjoyable! It’s also making me so much more self-directed and independent, which is so helpful in life!
Hopefully some of these changes in online learning will stick after the pandemic as well.
I feel like im stupid for not being able to learn anything during online learning... I just cant seem to focus. Even without distractions I literally fall asleep during lectures... And I’m also really bad at teaching myself. Used to be valedictorian now I’m barely getting passing grades. I just want to go back to school

I need every one of my teachers to watch this.
Unfortunately, if you're in a public school, you're teacher's hands are bound to uphold the status quo. Private school teachers might be able to do something about it. Really, it is the administrators who need to watch it.
you can do this in your own time, study any subject you didnt master using the tools he speaks of in the video.
This is very correct. The teacher's cannot change the system. It's the people who administer this system; it's the district boards. I'm quite sure 80% of teacher's acknowledge the fundamental issue in the system. Private school is sadly the only option that can change this issue because they are the ADMINISTRATORS of the system. Coming from a background of terrible math skills (ave. low 70s and I worked VERY hard for that) to accessing a private school teacher who tutored on the side changed my entire life. He filled all the gaps of knowledge that I had in mathematics. I saw an improvement of low 70s to high 80s in the matter of a semester. I entered my undergraduate degree in physics and I have the highest GPA in my year. All of this happened due to someone understanding the flaws in the educational system and helping students that have been affected by this system. The educational system fails to allow all students to tap into their potential and thus dwarfs the intellectual capital of society.
This is very true. I'm a maths teacher but I have a limited time to get through all of the content, I can't ask the exam board to move the exam because students are struggling with fractions or ratios. We need to move to online testing that can take place at any time. That way whenever a student is ready they can take the assessment and they can take as long as they need to get there.
How did nobody point out that if all of OPs teachers are doing things wrong then maybe he's the one with the problem?

Our educational system is about 200 years old. It was built as an industrial factory for building workers who are just well enough educated to work in industrial factories (but not well enough to get funny ideas). It's just not fit for our time.
What do you suggest?
+Berlin Lincoln modular learning + modular courses
what are those?
Berlin Lincoln My personal ideal would be some kind of open learning center, where everyone can select from a variety of courses, regardless of age and income, fitting his/her personal interest or enabling to find new places of interest. Simple grades in the current environment are horrible, because they are just "quality of product" stamps designed for employers to better select their workforce. For children they serve better to DE-motivate than motivate. Surely you need quality standards, but they should be independent of age. You see I have no clear idea of what to do, I'm no educational scientist or smth. I just see the current form schools tend to have as dehumanizing and creativity killing.
haha i love that "funny ideas"

Beautiful!! As a self taught musician I relate to this immensely. I had all these gaps in my educational learning that I ended up dropping out of school at my junior year. As it turns out I was using mastery learning in my guitar playing. I used this realization to go back and graduate from high school with honors and on to an associates degree with honors as well. The world needs this. We need everyone’s participation on this to push our limits. Creatively and otherwise.
I’m also a musician who dropped out junior year. When you went back, did you do community college or online? I want to go back too. Congratulations btw. The public school environment is not for everyone. Clearly there are more people who fail in that environment yet who are more than capable of mastering the material.
This makes so much sense to me. The way the education system works in NZ the biology courses are built on top of each other. Basically the definitions of terms get hugger as you go through school. This does mean that people don't understand why things work the way they do in level one or two. People learn for the topic and what it requires rather than actually learning it. I found, when I struggled I actually went forwards and learnt the next years concept I had a better understanding of my currently topic. This was because I was actually understanding rather than regurgitating information for an exam.

When I hear Sal (or anyone involved in radical education systems really) speak about the field, I get this intense urge to track down college deans grab them by the shoulders and shake them. I want to ask them what objection or roadblock could possibly keep ideas like flipping the classroom and mastery based learning from being implemented tomorrow. I know that roadblocks exist but the concepts seem so self-evident and powerful that I struggle to see anything being a reasonable excuse.
Could not agree more.
gotta be a lot sooner than college, go with grade school. by college many people already fell through their cracks, disregarded majors they could have been successful in, or chose not to continue their education because learning new/challenging things weren't for them.
David Li Oh I know, colleges just tend to be the first to make changes like this.
I am currently a public school teacher who is part of group attempting to put this type of program into place. Trust me when I say that lots of people believe that it is the right direction for education, but the implementation of such a program is difficult because it is difficult to track results. There are lots of books on how it can be done, and there are lots of schools already doing it. Lots of obstacles, but in the end, I believe that it is what is best for the students in my classroom.
It makes me happy, if teachers watch this and then go away and change something in their way of educating the next generation. My mother is a teacher, I think I should really show her the vid...

The first few videos I watched from him.... I had no idea this much bigger picture was the end goal. I admire people like this who are genuinely trying (and succeeding) in changing the world
My elementary school didn’t teach very much math, and when they did I was taken out of class for orchestra or gifted. I moved states in 5th grade and I had no idea what I was doing. This man taught me the fourth grade math I never learned and now I’m taking honors geometry this year (9th grade) with his help. Bless this man.
One of the few videos where I am genuinely angry about the dislikes
inSanity753 most of those are from pissed off teachers that unfortunately have their hands tied😞
In order to thrive academically, one needs to enjoy learning. To enjoy learning, among other things, one needs to take pleasure from accumulating knowledge. This requires a curious mindset, and this mindset takes time to develop. For some people, school just passes by too quickly to fully grasp all the concepts to enjoy them. So, a lot of people think they are somehow genetically not suited for education, but the truth is that if you have a functioning brain, you can almost learn anything, as long as you have the desire.
This is exactly what every single learner and teacher needs to know. And over that, we would need this mastery based learning model to be implemented in order to bring 100% change.
EXACTLY
Jon Huh I
Sir, you're the next president
Well... i don't think anyone can learn anything it depends what they're naturally good at and we're all born better at some things than others we get some things MUCH better and it's because of a number of factors from upbringing, to genetic factors, to how we percieve things someone who is genetically 1 footed, slower and clumsy they can't be an athlete they'd be really bad at it and for other types of jobs it depends what we're all individually inept to, id love to believe we could learn ANYTHING but truth is if the parents don't even try to build on skills with them too and just leave it to the education system like they do now then it still hugely changes what we're good at but of course no... parents shouldn't have the right to choose what we should do either but even their influence, what they're good at themselves, the upbringing they make us live it's all variables in the equation. I'm good with computers and technology because my dads always taught me about these things i was at 5 i was playing the Snes and using TVs, at 6 using computers playing kids learning games, at 7 RPG games and already kind of experience internet through Dial Up even if it never worked lol and i learned how to use Windows, i'm good at singing and with some aspects of music because my dad is good with music too (although hugely neglected), he used to play the guiltar and sing and a few people on my dads they can play the guiltar and sing too so that came from genes i'm just a natural singer, i'm not athletic or good at sports but i think i move better for Martial Arts i have the right personality for it too and again my dad used to do Judo when i was younger so again genes :P so it shows that we can't at all do ANYTHING it's not at all a negative mind set it's just fact for SO many reasons.
I taught children who had gone through kindergarten, were not ready for first grade but another year of kindergarten wouldn't help them. Some of the children were bussed to me from other schools. I tested them a lot as I was teaching them but the tests were for ME to show me what I hadn't taught them. If the were making "mistakes" those were MY mistakes. I had to back to what they could do and build from there. I have heard teachers say, "I taught it to them but they didn't learn it." If you teach somebody something but the student(s) didn't learn it THEN YOU DIDN'T TEACH IT! Being the teacher of these children was wonderful and challenging. But they learned! I am retired but I miss my job dreadfully. I wake myself up in the night talking with the children in my dreams.
THIS MAN IS THE SAVIOR OF ALL STUDENTS SAL, THANK YOU
I love this. It all starts with realizing that a 100% should be attainable on EVERY TEST. I think that's a concept most students don't understand. They somehow think that even if you "get" the material, a 100% should be for the birthright gods of the subject. But no, the questions on the test are from the material taught. If you understand the material taught, you should be able to answer every single question correctly. Once people realize that mastery is possible, this mastery-based learning will work wonders, I really really hope.
makes me laugh when I realize that I had an art teacher that never gave 100s no matter how good the drawing was. She said "no one draws perfect."
Ok well the arts (visual, performing, etc.) are different because there is no objective sense of accuracy. But you know what I mean :^)
But is 100% on a 12-year-olds test proof of mastery, or proof that they're adept at memorizing information and ticking the right boxes?
Sarah Harvey That is, in my opinion, up to the teaching style. If you ask the students memorizable questions and only teach them enough to memorize and don't go in depth at all and don't test critical application, then that's what you'll get.
it's just the fear of failure tht stops us thinking like tht but really these Khan academy and stuff really helps us going over tht fear and lets us know how beautiful those things are which are taught to use . this can revolutionize human learning

I totally agree with Sal, almost all of us have a lot of potential to learn. Thanks for your contribution to the world of Education, Sal. A big hug for you from Venezuela.
this man is my greatest teacher ever. I learned more from than anyone else.
He gets it right by implying hard work is more important than intelligence.
Most of the people whom I praised for being 'smart' or a 'genius' always turn it down and explained that they are just recalling the concepts that they have learnt. These individuals find more content over projects and collaborative work where they get the opportunity to create!
'Hard work' is misleading, I used to get ~50% in school, and now in collage I get 90%-100% on average, why? because I'm doing things that I enjoy. is it sometimes a bit of work? sure, but 'hard work' makes it sound arduous, which it definitely does not have to be.
He probably means mastering intelligence is better than having lots of intelligence.
I agree. As Scrooge McDuck's father said, "Work smarter, not harder."
I would like your comment a thousand times if I could
I owe 99% of my math skills to this legend!
sal khan is just one of the best examples of what a devout and brilliant educator is. :) thanks for all the help sal!
Thank you Sal for your hard work and your commitment to the cause, I admire you!
I've always felt that something like this was true due to my education being kinda weak, I felt uncomfortable going to college because of these 'gaps' he is talking about but now I love my job using mathematics everyday and I struggled with the basics for a very long time.
What's your job?
I work for Dell, you are not getting anymore than that lol.
No, I meant to ask what your job is.
Cleaning toilets at Dell. 1 toiletpaper roll times 4 times toilet.
datFloyd lol
*Some people are born with an innate gift for a subject, and they have a relatively easier job building skyscrapers on their already solid ground floor. But I believe the process of laying your very first foundation, putting every single brick together one by one, and watching your works growing day by day... is truly rewarding in itself. It may be laborious, but being part of it is glorious.*
I totally agree!😊
your text is so white , it gives a headache
k let’s change the word white and tell me how that sounds
*WOW*
I'm motivated ty
This man is getting me through college... and he has a very calming voice. He is a nation treasure. All teachers should be like this man.
I'm using Sal's Khan Academy to teach my maths lessons during the COVID -19 Lockdown and it's absolutely invaluable. My students who really want to improve their owm mastery are several lessons ahead of my tasking. Thank you Sal - your time will definitely come, despite all the obstacles that are put in the way by all the educational leadership around the World.
This guy has helped me master basic calculus and CHEMISTRY. I despise chemistry but for the first time in my life, I found myself answering chemistry questions with ease during my first year university exam because of this guy.
Nice to put a face to the voice of all the khan tutorials 😭
leah hogans hahaha... also, hearing that voice you instantly and subconsciously go in learning mode :)

His words. Omg! I don't know about others but Sal really inspires me to study. I honestly like calculus and organic chemistry because of him. I am able to understand whatever he teaches. So if u ever see this Sal THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
When Life gives you Salman , be Sal and not Sallu.
