Let's teach for mastery -- not test scores | Sal Khan

Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation? Of course not. Why, then, do we rush students through education when they haven't always grasped the basics? Yes, it's complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace.

  • In India, everyeone sets a target first. Then does everything to achieve that target. No one cares if you have your base clear or not. Just the target. As a result, The people who are able to hit the target, they fail seriously in professionalism. Those who can't achieve the goal, loses his ability to persue for something other. • Currently during this coronavirus outbreak when we are participating in distance learning, I’ve been enjoying it quite a lot, because I’m truly learning for the love of learning. One thing that was difficult for me, especially in math class, was having to keep up with the quick pace without fully understanding bits and pieces of the content(therefore creating gaps in my knowledge). However, now, I can watch videos of lessons at my own pace, and if I don’t get something, pause and think about it until I understand and figure it out, then continue. This means I’m able to fully fathom concepts instead of memorizing, and that’s been so enjoyable! It’s also making me so much more self-directed and independent, which is so helpful in life!

    • This is very correct. The teacher's cannot change the system. It's the people who administer this system; it's the district boards. I'm quite sure 80% of teacher's acknowledge the fundamental issue in the system. Private school is sadly the only option that can change this issue because they are the ADMINISTRATORS of the system. Coming from a background of terrible math skills (ave. low 70s and I worked VERY hard for that) to accessing a private school teacher who tutored on the side changed my entire life. He filled all the gaps of knowledge that I had in mathematics. I saw an improvement of low 70s to high 80s in the matter of a semester. I entered my undergraduate degree in physics and I have the highest GPA in my year. All of this happened due to someone understanding the flaws in the educational system and helping students that have been affected by this system. The educational system fails to allow all students to tap into their potential and thus dwarfs the intellectual capital of society.

    • This is very true. I'm a maths teacher but I have a limited time to get through all of the content, I can't ask the exam board to move the exam because students are struggling with fractions or ratios. We need to move to online testing that can take place at any time. That way whenever a student is ready they can take the assessment and they can take as long as they need to get there.

Simple grades in the current environment are horrible, because they are just "quality of product" stamps designed for employers to better select their workforce. For children they serve better to DE-motivate than motivate. Surely you need quality standards, but they should be independent of age. You see I have no clear idea of what to do, I'm no educational scientist or smth. I just see the current form schools tend to have as dehumanizing and creativity killing.

As it turns out I was using mastery learning in my guitar playing. I used this realization to go back and graduate from high school with honors and on to an associates degree with honors as well. The world needs this. We need everyone’s participation on this to push our limits. Creatively and otherwise.

  • This makes so much sense to me. The way the education system works in NZ the biology courses are built on top of each other. Basically the definitions of terms get hugger as you go through school. This does mean that people don't understand why things work the way they do in level one or two. People learn for the topic and what it requires rather than actually learning it. I found, when I struggled I actually went forwards and learnt the next years concept I had a better understanding of my currently topic. This was because I was actually understanding rather than regurgitating information for an exam.

This requires a curious mindset, and this mindset takes time to develop. For some people, school just passes by too quickly to fully grasp all the concepts to enjoy them. So, a lot of people think they are somehow genetically not suited for education, but the truth is that if you have a functioning brain, you can almost learn anything, as long as you have the desire.

    • Well... i don't think anyone can learn anything it depends what they're naturally good at and we're all born better at some things than others we get some things MUCH better and it's because of a number of factors from upbringing, to genetic factors, to how we percieve things someone who is genetically 1 footed, slower and clumsy they can't be an athlete they'd be really bad at it and for other types of jobs it depends what we're all individually inept to, id love to believe we could learn ANYTHING but truth is if the parents don't even try to build on skills with them too and just leave it to the education system like they do now then it still hugely changes what we're good at but of course no... parents shouldn't have the right to choose what we should do either but even their influence, what they're good at themselves, the upbringing they make us live it's all variables in the equation. I'm good with computers and technology because my dads always taught me about these things i was at 5 i was playing the Snes and using TVs, at 6 using computers playing kids learning games, at 7 RPG games and already kind of experience internet through Dial Up even if it never worked lol and i learned how to use Windows, i'm good at singing and with some aspects of music because my dad is good with music too (although hugely neglected), he used to play the guiltar and sing and a few people on my dads they can play the guiltar and sing too so that came from genes i'm just a natural singer, i'm not athletic or good at sports but i think i move better for Martial Arts i have the right personality for it too and again my dad used to do Judo when i was younger so again genes :P so it shows that we can't at all do ANYTHING it's not at all a negative mind set it's just fact for SO many reasons.

I tested them a lot as I was teaching them but the tests were for ME to show me what I hadn't taught them. If the were making "mistakes" those were MY mistakes. I had to back to what they could do and build from there. I have heard teachers say, "I taught it to them but they didn't learn it." If you teach somebody something but the student(s) didn't learn it THEN YOU DIDN'T TEACH IT! Being the teacher of these children was wonderful and challenging. But they learned! I am retired but I miss my job dreadfully. I wake myself up in the night talking with the children in my dreams.

  • I love this. It all starts with realizing that a 100% should be attainable on EVERY TEST. I think that's a concept most students don't understand. They somehow think that even if you "get" the material, a 100% should be for the birthright gods of the subject. But no, the questions on the test are from the material taught. If you understand the material taught, you should be able to answer every single question correctly. Once people realize that mastery is possible, this mastery-based learning will work wonders, I really really hope.

    • But is 100% on a 12-year-olds test proof of mastery, or proof that they're adept at memorizing information and ticking the right boxes?

      @SarahHarveyExpatOfTheWorld@SarahHarveyExpatOfTheWorld7 жыл бұрын
    • Sarah Harvey That is, in my opinion, up to the teaching style. If you ask the students memorizable questions and only teach them enough to memorize and don't go in depth at all and don't test critical application, then that's what you'll get.

    • Most of the people whom I praised for being 'smart' or a 'genius' always turn it down and explained that they are just recalling the concepts that they have learnt. These individuals find more content over projects and collaborative work where they get the opportunity to create!

      @h0tie@h0tie7 жыл бұрын
    • 'Hard work' is misleading, I used to get ~50% in school, and now in collage I get 90%-100% on average, why? because I'm doing things that I enjoy. is it sometimes a bit of work? sure, but 'hard work' makes it sound arduous, which it definitely does not have to be.

  • *Some people are born with an innate gift for a subject, and they have a relatively easier job building skyscrapers on their already solid ground floor. But I believe the process of laying your very first foundation, putting every single brick together one by one, and watching your works growing day by day... is truly rewarding in itself. It may be laborious, but being part of it is glorious.*
