8 Reasons Why You SHOULD NOT Get a Bichon Frise
Bichon Frise is a cute, cheerful, and small breed that gained many fans all over the world because of their white, fluffy coat and black eyes and nose. These dogs are so adorable that they almost look like a child’s stuffed toy! While they will surely make great companions, this breed is not for everyone. So, for today’s video, we’ll talk about the 8 reasons why you should not get a Bichon Frise!
Despite their small figure, Bichon Frises have a lot of love to give! Enthusiastic and affectionate, these dogs are the happiest when they get to spend time with their families. Because they are easy to care for, even novice, first-time pet parents, and apartment dwellers would appreciate this breed. However, like all dogs, they have their own needs which will determine if they are the right dog for your home, or not. Later on this video, we’ll get to know more about these dogs so make sure to stay with us until the end.

Hi fellow dog lover!🐶 My dog Billie had so many behavior problems… she was jumping, peeing inappropriately, overly aggressive, pulling on the leash… she was just crazy…🤪 Then I found this one solution that stopped all the problems!🙌 The sad fact was…The training I first tried with my dog was a complete fai...lure.😔 I went through the average cookie-cutter training programs. These programs used outdated and ‘mean’ dominance techniques. It turns out those programs had no qualifications and were developed by complete phonies.😱 So this is what I did to stop my dog’s behavior problems... In a few simple words… I discovered my dog’s hidden intelligence!🧠
Let me explain… In my years as a dog owner…this is the one big lesson I have learned. More intelligent dogs are better behaved.👍 A more intelligent dog takes commands easier…and understands what you need from them. What I found out was… No matter how clever I thought my dog was. I could still unlock my dog’s hidden intelligence quickly and easily!😄 Don’t waste a second longer putting up with your dog's behavior problem! I’ll explain everything you need to know in the link!😁

  • I was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer three years ago. I wanted a comfort dog. The shelters web site said George was a five year old rescued stray mini poodle. Turns out he's probably more like a three year old BICHON frise. Perfect. I'm no longer very active and I need Lots of company and Love. My George is perfect for me! He is exquisitely sensitive, which I'm leARning. "Keeping up with" his grooming is a soothing practice for me. I am immEASURABly happier now that I have my GEORGIE!

    • I’m so very sorry for your diagnosis, but happy you have a Bichon with you! My Bichon is 15. 14 years ago, a woman was diagnosed with cancer and had to find a new home for her puppy. I wasn’t ready for a dog, as I was so focused on my young son. But I promised my son a dog. They were instant friends! Our new pup helped him make friends in our new neighborhood! He was such a blessing and attracted other kids/friends! My son is in college, and during Covid, I fell madly in love with my Bichon! I had NO idea this was possible, thought he was just a dog at first, and didn’t even think about the woman who had to give him up. So many years and so much love later, I wish I could tell the woman what a blessing and joy this dog has been to me, my son and family, the residents in my grandmothers nursing home and just everyone. And I wish I could thank her more for this beautiful gift she gave us. At the time, I just had no idea. I hope you and your dog continue keeping each other company! Best wishes to you!

  • Our first Bichon lived to be 16. She passed almost 3 years ago and we still miss her dearly. She was the sweetest dog either of us had ever had. To find a Bichon, expect to be on a private breeder list for up to 2 years or more. We choose a smaller breeder and it still took 15 months to get our new female baby. Male's are easier to find. Bichon's are best for a stay at home owners as they get very attached and extremely protective of their people. We try to make sure that one of us is at home. Our Bichon is groomed every 4 weeks and we bathe her every 7-10 days. Expect to spend $100 a month in caring for your Bichon and another $500-$600 a year for normal Vet visits. Every time you look at your adorable Bichon, the pure joy they give you will be well worth the money.🤗💗

    • I second that - DON'T listen to this! We have an adorable 10 year old male Bichon we adopted 3 yrs ago this May from an elderly woman (almost 90), and the same for us. He was already trained in basic commands. Pretty smart - communicates well his needs and wants. Not been picky with food or treats. Funny though, I think his previous mom allowed him to have human food along with his dog food sometimes. He let his temptations get the best of him a few times the first year we had him lol. Now that was a little costly going to the ER for for getting into chocolate and raisins. Very sweet and affectionate. Free alarm and security. Anyone at or messing with the door, he's on it! Grooming isn't that expensive. A visit every 2.5mos ($75-85 tip included). A couple weeks after he's groomed, a little brushing and combing to help prevent matting 1x a wk or every other wk. I use short grooming scissors to trim around his eyes, bum, and his little one in between grooming to keep those areas clean and free from build up of things. We live in N.E. (MA) - in the winter he wears clothing and boots just like other pups and is more than fine. In summertime his hairdo is cut shorter. Neck coolers/cooling bandanas help for 90~+ temps for everyone. He loves being outside for walks. I'm a Pet Sitter so he gets to come along with me for visits with other pups and kitties. He's Mr. Sociable! Super friendly with everyone, people, sociable with every breed of dog, no matter the size, male or female. He walks with a pack of sometimes up to 5 other pups at a time. He's usually the smallest one. A great leader too. No anxiety. He stays home alone for hours with no issues when we're not able (or we don't want to) to bring him along. Date night with hubby doesn't include the little one :) Just leave the tv on something good.

  • I just adopted a bichon from a kennel (puppy mill) in Nov at 7mo old. He just turned a year old🥰. He definitely has major separation anxiety even when being babysat🥴. Car rides are difficult for him so have to give him calming chews. I feel so blessed that he's attached to me. Oh my gosh Blake is a billy goat! I've tried every trick to get him to stop eating rabbit pellets on the ground but NOTHING works. I've had to take him to the vet 3 times but I have peace of mind that Blake's needs are being met. He deals with allergies. Most definitely stubborn. Hates the word "No!" Becomes even more feisty to corrective behavior, the stinker. Training is challenging but loves to play with all toys including destroying 3 of my shoes lol. Have had to baby proof my home lol. So freaking energetic and keeps me active (on my toes). He LOVES water especially when I take my showers lol. I fully groom him myself, so patient and accepting of it. Currently training him as my medical service dog. Helps my PTSD and type 1 diabetes. He alerts me, which is amazing!😀. I believe God pairs us with the fur babies meant to be. We're their pets for sure.🥰.

  • I have a Bichon and she is PERFECT. Yes, she does need attention. She came to me at six years old and had been socially neglected after she came out of the show ring. She was used for breading but is on the small side and couldn't produce enough puppies so I was blessed and received her as a gift from a breeder who gave her to my daughter for me. I also have a Yorkie something. His vet calls him a Yorkie mix but I think he's really something. They just love each other. I had her spayed after she got used being here and I got the Yorkie neutered after he came to me from being dumped in the desert. I have had fur babies as long as I can remember and the two I have right now are awesome. I live in Las Vegas, NV. and in case you don't know, it's hotter than blue blazes here in the summer but my Bichon does just fine. She and my Yorkie are allowed to go out to do their business but they are timed because of the heat. In the winter, they have little jackets and can run and play as much as they want. Of course they are inside VERY high walls so they are safe. Just love your Bichon, enjoy your time together, I work from home, and your fur baby will return your love 10 times over.

Never had problem with weather. Double coat guards from hot sun, have coat longer in winter, ours loved the snow! Sensitive stomachs yes but resilient too, ours never fussy. Would eat anything if had rhe chance, but we only ever fed healthy. We miss our little Bichon so much.

  • I had 2 Bichons Frise . One bichon was a son of 2 champions and was absolutely beautiful and so vey smart the other was as beautiful and smart as well. Both were a RESCUE dogs as all the animals I ever had . You need to walk them out every so often otherwise they will forget to ask to go out and there it goes another accident inside ; they are difficult to house train , but I was able to obtain that with a lot of patience and time . It is costly to groom them but I learn how to do it myself . They are very sweet and easy to train to the point of becoming a "CLOWN " . My were dancing , rolling over , jumping and walking on the hind legs. Absolutely loving dogs , but with a very sensitive stomach , so I cook for them myself and this way I knew exactly what they were eating and they were very healthy . I also brushed their teeth , cut their nails, cleaned their ears , walk them and LOVE them to pieces . I was staying at home , so I could afford to take care of them . One was an ALFA dog and he was 19 years old when he died in my arms . The other one was only 15 years old and he died also in my arms of a stroke . I miss them terribly but now I have Siberian Husky and Yorkie which are so completely different but as loving and as wonderful . Remember that not every dog suits your life style so choose the one which fits the best and I am sure you will have a BEST friend for many years to come.

  • They are the happiest dogs I’ve ever known. I’m in love with this breed and I’m on my second. It is very true about them barking at predators or dangerous animals. My first Bichon barked at a moose so much, that it crashed through my fence to get at her. Fortunately at that point she ran. Took her a dozen hours to stop shaking. Did she learn anything? Nope. She kept barking at everything. My current Bichon saw a black bear in our yard and ran at it, barking. The bear was on the fence and Clancy kept jumping up at it and the bear was swinging it’s arm at the dog and barely missing. I had to pick up the nearest thing I could use, a plastic push broom, and swung it at the bear until it left. I was never so scared for my dog. He also learned nothing. I absolutely adore him.

The only thing I don’t recommend is this huge age gap if you have more than 1. Gracie is not that interested in Sammy being she’s 10 years older, almost to the day. Same breeder. Didn’t have to wait long to get them. Gracie is attached to me and Sammy is attached to my sister. They are a lot of work, but they are worth it! ❤

  • As a bichon mix owner it is really difficult if you do not have a lot of time or work a lot. My Benji has extremely bad separation anxiety as well, but he does very well on hikes and has no known health issues (other than a posible wheat allergy). Overall tho he is my biggest supporter but will also attack me if i don’t throw the ball immediately

He is FULL of energy, will bark demanding that we throw his toy for him. Hes quite protective. He has nipped several ppl and we are trying to break that behaviour. Thia is thwmost loving little dog and very funny!

They are active but Napoleon exercised himself in the house between walks. All they need is a straight, unobstructed pathway to do their Bichon Zoom 😊. They love to be under you but that's true for everyone because he never met a stranger. My aunt used to babysit him during the day or he would go to doggy daycare. He would forget me as soon as they closed the gate...lol. He died in 2015 and yes I was gutted and still am so I want three more😊

On Sunday I will be getting a 2yr old female 'Bella" .A lady just decided she does not want her she was dropped off at a Kennel. How you do that ,just throw them away. A Bichon is not a dog you drop at a kennel .How could I say know. My Gypsy was a very special dog. I will need to remind myself this is Bella not Gypsy Rose Lee.

  • I have a Bichon/toy poodle mix, otherwise called a Bichon-poodle. Yeah, definitely has issues with separation anxiety and also food sensitivities. He can't digest kibble. I give him rotisserie chicken, roast beef, beef tenderloin, cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, and mix that usually with some "wet" dog food (but never kibble). He's 7 now, almost 8 years old. Has slowed down somewhat, but when Chochki (his name is Chochki) was about 4 years old and younger, we could easily walk like 2 or 3 miles, TWO TIMES A DAY!!!! After the walk, he would come home and want to play for like 30 minutes!!!! He had a huge amount of energy back then. These days I usually give him one nice walk every day (half-mile to a mile) and two other trips to the backyard or around the block. He's a happy little guy, but yeah, doesn't like to be left alone. I'm semi-retired, so it actually works out very well. On days when I'm working or have medical appointments, I put Chochki into Best Friends, a doggy daycare facility that is about 30 minutes away by car. That way he's not alone. He really doesn't handle being alone very well, especially since my mother and brother passed on last year. He's a happy little guy, and loves to play with me, but not the right dog for someone who works long hours or is enrolled in a very rigorous academic program. This breed needs a ton of hands-on attention! But they are very lovable dogs for the right owner. Very cuddly, and very protective of their owners. AND THEY DON'T SHED!!!!! Hooray!!!!! 😀

Luckily we were then able to find a friend of a friend who was having her first litter. So we got our Ivy. My baby. Being disabled she is a joy and comfort to me.

She lived to almost 15,She may have lived longer but she had doggie dementia and had gone from a healthy 12 pounds down to 6.9 lb because of forgetting to eat. We even fed her dog friendly people food after she started losing weight. We had to go on a cross country trip for our son's wedding and were concerned that something might happen while we were gone, so we had her put to sleep, surrounded by the people who loved her. I have the time to groom properly and would enjoy doing so. I've owned dogs before but they were larger. I believe owning a Bichon Frises would be a good fit for both of us.

    • Sounds perfect for everyone. Bichons don't like long walks 30mins is enough. I'm on my 3rd & have to carry her if it's longer than 45mins, I swear she can read the time. She's not spoiled I'm just very well trained. 😂 She's a young dog but on walks will always approach older people & is naturally very gentle, she just loves that age group. They are wonderful dogs & their level of affection, sense of joy & fun is off the charts, I groom her myself, good for you for planning on trying it, it's not as hard as groomers make it out to be. You will be addicted very quickly & one extremely happy & contented person having an angel like this in your life. Good luck I'm so happy for you sending love from Ireland 🇨🇮 👍 🐶

    • So then I'll conclude by stating that, if you got the time, and they need a lot of your time; these are extraordinarily smart dogs. That can be good or bad. You gotta find the right avenues to accentuate the positives and then it works beautifully. Yeah, I tell her at least twice a day, "It's a good thing you're cute..." and they never feel guilty, apologetic, or sorry. That's not in their DNA. One noteworthy aspect you don't hear about much; Bichon's have the ability to split connections to a man and wife 50/50. Each can have vastly different interactions and games, but having a pecking order in the house can be sidestepped. Oops, I just stumbled the greatest reason upon maybe the greatest to maybe not get a Bichon. Are you a couple and can you be sure you will be for the next 15 years? Yep, there it is, not applicable for me, wife and I been kicking it for 36 yrs.

When I leave for work he refuses to take a treat to show his unhappiness. Short walks are fine as he is smaller than average but he still wants to play when we get back, otherwise he will bug you until you give him attention. Absolutely adorable though, we feel so lucky.

  • Many years ago I helped my mother in law find a Bichon Frise that an acquaintance of a coworker was looking to re-home because their kids weren’t spending enough time with the dog, Milo was about two at the time and he ended up spending another 14 years or so with them. He was the most gentle dog, and never even so much growled at anyone. The only annoying tendency that he had was frequent whining and would steal food if you weren’t paying attention. When Milo passed away at 16 years old, I cried as if he were my own dog, although I only saw him once or twice a week on average.

  • 1. I’m so used to it now but the biggest issue is Bichon Frisés is high maintenance in terms of grooming : it’s a nightmare , time consuming and tiring. 4h-5h at least 😩 or very expensive at the groomer. You need to brush before the shampoo and after the shampoo. Needs specific high quality products for white coats, blue shampoo, conditioner, detangler sprays from the best brands, like Ladybel only sold in France or Chris Christensen from US. A lot of tools: combs, brush, tweezers, scissors of different sizes, nail clippers, mini and normal trimmer, trim the hair in the paws, pluck the hair inside the ears, product for the ears, product for tears stains… so on 2. One was prone to uncurable itchy eczema, the other one with Pedigree didn’t have eczema but she got kidney stones issues and surgery to remove them at 2, then feed her specific more expensive croquettes for life. I think white dogs ‘albino types’ they are like prone to health conditions. But she was never sick 3. Love to bark a lot ! Even during sleep 🙉 4. It broke my heart so much when they died, and the way they died that I can’t get over it so for now I don’t want another dog unless I’m ready to face all of this. Nonetheless, Bichon Frisé stays my favorite breed forever, I had 2 females for so long I don’t want no other race of dog. They’re happy, joyful, smart, playful, funny, affectuous, never can’t get enough of cuddles (yes clingy but you need to teach them to survive without you when you go out, so don’t spend too much time with them when puppy, put some distance, let them sleep in the living room, don’t greet them when you leave and come back home, otherwise they can become destructive and have separation anxiety everytime you go out : howl and cry all night, destruct in the house ), kind, overall very good temper, easy going. One was kind of “sporty” liked to run and jump on high tree trunks in the forest, the other one was bored with walks in the jungle like she didn’t want to go at all. None was picky eaters, they are very gourmand , obsessed with food, they loved any food or fruits in the world you can give, durian, even salad, soy sprouts or cucumber, as long as they’re used to eating their croquettes first, because if they are used to eat cooked meals with sauce, they will never accept processed foods. The last one - Daintree - was so smart she could find hidden money/weed/cigarettes/fruits in the house, anything with a smell she could find it and become police dog. She never caused any damages in the flat (like chewing shoes, furnitures… make the Bin fall to feed from it, things like that) but had her little rebellious character at times : if you let them take the upper hand and don’t know how to say no and dominate, you can get a spoiled dog. She could growl and snap bite my parents to rebel, follow them everywhere to beg for food because they always give her , bark non stop forever if you let her etc but she knows she cannot do that with me. You need to be firm and strict in small dogs education and letting know you are the boss, just like with kids: don’t give in that cute face and pamper them too much. I strictly followed a canine education program on book : Not allowed on sofa, not allowed in the bed, no jumping on anyone to greet. Then, they obey very well.

My boy will chew his paws off if I would let him get that bad. But he gets allergy shots every 6 weeks to help. They also need grooming often. Just make sure you get them into a groomer every 4 to 6 weeks or brush them daily to help with their coat, not matting. Other than those things, he is the sweetest, cuddly, curly headed cutie I've ever had. They are truly one of the best breeds. ❤
