What’s behind the Iranian protest chant of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’? - BBC Newsnight

2022 ж. 12 Қаз.
177 566 Рет қаралды

On September 16, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of Iranian morality police for allegedly breaking strict hijab rules. What followed were protests that’ve become the biggest threat to the country's theocracy in more than a decade.
The Iran Human Rights' group latest estimate suggests 201 people have been killed in the protests, including 23 children.
Many videos show people chanting the slogan of the rebellion, "Woman, Life, Freedom." BBC Persian service’s Jiyar Gol explores the origins of that cry.

    • @Pigmen Ukraine Hmm, are you sure you have your facts right? You seem confused as to the difference between Taliban and Afghans. Plus you have not mentioned Al Qaeda. Perhaps you have forgotten the many, many other Islamic groups who based themselves in Afghanistan. Perhaps you were unaware these other groups were sponsored by Pakistan's security authorities for their own purposes? In short you haven't a clue about the political issues in that region of the "Stans". You might have researched the politics of the region, at that time, before you posted such drivel. The politics were and still are very complex and change all the time. The Taliban are not welcomed by some of these other Islamic and you might have noticed that suicide bombers are perfectly happy to try and destabilise the current Taliban regime. You should know too that Islam has more than one "faction", so to speak, and these factions are not above killing each other despite their common belief in Allah. Perhaps if you weren't so smug and blamed the West for all the issues in the region you wouldn't appear to be so ignorant. Top Tip: do some research before you post in future.

  • Don’t make this about a certain ethnic group. This is about Iran and all of it’s people. We’re all one and we’re all demanding freedom. We’re fighting the oppressing regime.

    @mehrdadg.ardehaei9049@mehrdadg.ardehaei9049 Жыл бұрын
    • Who made it about certain ethnic group only? Why do Iranians always insist of ignoring the problems ethnic minorities face and force us to shut up all the time? You could also say, why make these protest just about women. People in Iran face many layers of oppression. Being a woman you have layers men do not have. Being an ethnic minority, especially sunni and from border areas like Kurdistan and Balochistan, you have layers of oppression others don't have. Instead of ignoring it, freedom is only achieved by being inclusive of these problems. Besides, the video is about the origins of the slogan jin jiyan azadi. It's not just a slogan, but part of a wider philosophical framework in the kurdish movements for achieving free societies in the middle east. Kurds have been promoting these ideas for decades, played especially powerful role in the fight against ISIS in Syria, and it has now spread into the Iranian society, through Iranian Kurdistan. To not mention kurds when explaining this history, makes no sense. To say let's just say we are Iranians and forget everything else, is anti-unity. To make room for our differences, and acknowledge us all as who we are and not just white washed as 'generic Iranian' is when you have genuine unity.

      @element4element4@element4element4 Жыл бұрын
    • @@element4element4 Iranian regime uses these videos to prove themselves as the national glue that holds country together. Mentioning an certain group and praising their separatist aims in an subconscious way is only benefiting the bloody mullahs that crush innocent people on the streets now. Iran needs unity now. It is an struggle regardless of race or gender.

      @ALBERT-oj1vn@ALBERT-oj1vn Жыл бұрын
    • @@ALBERT-oj1vn All major kurdish groups are against separating from Iran, their political aim is a federal system with rights to ethnic minorities. And this has been their goal since long before the Islamic revolution. The "separatist" propaganda by the regime is just a trick to vilify the kurds and justify the current oppression against them. Whenever an Iranian mentions this, it just implies to me that they have the same fascist views as the regime does and do not seek a truly democratic system. Besides, even IF kurds were seeking to separate from Iran (which they are not), then a democratic minded person would respect this wish. As not doing so amounts to military occupation. If somebody in Khorasan buys the regime propaganda, and thinks that keeping Kurdistan under military occupation and keep kurds away from having a say, is more important than have freedom for themselves. Then these people aren't different from Islamic Republic, and don't deserve freedom for themselves. Regarding this being a struggle regardless of gender and race. All slogans are about women, it's called a feminist revolution etc. Why don't people complain about this? Why don't they say "it's a struggle regardless of gender, stop keep mentioning women"? Why is this logic only applied to Kurds? If one truly believes in unity, one will encourage mentioning all ethnic, religious etc minorities in Iran. If one demands nobody is mentioned, everybody must just call themselves "Iranian" because of unity. It's just a backhanded way to split us all, and destroy our unity against the regime.
