Welcome to Episode 7 of my Don't Starve - Reign of Giants Beginner's Guide Series! This episode is all about Combat, and will cover weapons and armor, kiting, and the B to W of how to fight ALL THE THINGS that live on the surface! Because mobs in Reign of Giants also exist in Don't Starve Together, this guide also applies to the multiplayer version of Don't Starve, with a few differences that are covered in the video.
NOTE: Be sure to check the pinned comment for a small addendum I learned about during an @JazzysGames livestream. Thanks Jazzy!! (And apparently I need to do even more personal testing of stuff on the wiki LOL).

  • Addendum to the Video: Apparently I didn't fully test the armor priority system as described on the wiki, and thanks to a clarification @JazzysGames made in a livestream, the body armor appears to always take a back seat to the helmet armor, meaning the helmet will always absorb damage first, regardless of the order they were equipped. Also, even with stacked armor and backups in your inventory, when a piece of armor breaks with less durability than the incoming hit, the excess will be applied to your HEALTH before it goes to either your second armor piece or the new on that gets hot-swapped in.

    @salendrak@salendrak2 жыл бұрын
    • I can't confirm that this is always the case, but last I checked it seemed to treat the headslot as the primary armor even when I equipped a body slot armor last.

      @JazzysGames@JazzysGames2 жыл бұрын
    • @@JazzysGames Yeah, I did a quick test earlier, and couldn't get a football helmet to break slower than a log suit no matter what I tried. Maybe at some point I'll get around to testing other armors. Also, thanks for stopping by! 😊

      @salendrak@salendrak2 жыл бұрын
    • Wiki is pretty unequivocal - it says "Primary armor, i.e. the armor that absorbs the most damage, is always the last equipped." (Order will change during battle if something breaks.) I know you found out a lot about thermal stones which wasn't in the wiki (and I think you should add your findings! :) but if this is wrong, it's pretty critical to the whole combat system so something doesn't add up...

      @Fledhyris@Fledhyris2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Fledhyris Yeah, after Jazzy mentioned it I double tested it, and no matter what order I equipped the armor, the helmet always took more damage. I wonder if they changed it at some point after that part of the wiki was written and nobody ever updated it. As for me updating the wiki - perhaps! I've never contributed to a wiki before, but maybe I'll give it a go at some point!

      @salendrak@salendrak2 жыл бұрын
    • Dunno if something changed or not, but I've at least found a solution that works. The key is that you need both equip slots completely empty to reset it. Then equip your secondary armor, and only then the primary. Unequipping one slot doesn't change anything, and it seems non-armor such as a backpack will still keep the secondary in place.

  • Picked up Don't Starve Together for myself and my girlfriend a little while ago during a steam sale because we love co-op games. Finally got around to playing it this past week, we went into it blind and had fun figuring stuff out for ourselves but quickly realized this game is pretty complicated and we were dying very quickly. I looked for guides on KZhead, and was disappointed to find that there were few that were comprehensive and tailored to new players that were any good. Then I stumbled across your channel and holy shit man your guides are top-notch. Clear, informative, pleasant to watch, and obviously have a ton of effort put in. I don't comment on KZhead vids much but I see that you actually do read comments quite a bit and I want to say you've helped us enjoy this game way more already, and I'm astonished you don't have more subs. Keep up the good work! Little additional tip for people playing DST: Turn off movement prediction in the settings. It is supposed to help with latency but doesn't work great and makes kiting nearly impossible. Thought I was just bad at the game until I turned it off lol

    • Wow - thanks! And that's totally awesome that you and your girlfriend are having fun playing this together! I get my wife to play with me every now and then. She's not much of a gamer, but she really enjoys Wendy and Abigail 😊 I'll cover DST specifically at some point, but yes - Lag Compensation is the WORST!! I remember the first time I played DST (after have played a TON of single player) I quickly found that I couldn't fight much of anything without getting hit, and had no idea why. Eventually I learned about this setting and once it was off, the game was SOOOO much more enjoyable! They really need to make it off by default!

  • I'm really thankful for your guides! I've heard about don't starve for many years but I never got around to playing it, I finally decided to play it in the start of November and I died almost immediately, but after watching your guides I was able to advance a lot farther, so much so that in my most recent playthrough I made it to my first summer and even though I died to dragonfly I now know enough about the game that I can hopefully survive my first year!

    @desiterdane4286@desiterdane42863 жыл бұрын
    • Awesome - and don't worry about dying to dragonfly. She's the hardest of the seasonal bosses in RoG. Good news though is that her loot isn't very useful, and she simply de-spawns if you get far enough away from her, so she can basically just be avoided. But I'll demonstrate a couple of ways to deal with her in my summer guide, and how knows - maybe Wagstaff will have a run-in with her!

  • I want to give you some detailed feedback this time :) ~ positive stuff I want to mention ~ - First of all what I really enjoy about your guide series is that you actually use time stamps and divide your video in sections as well as put a table of content with linked time stamps in your video description! I like that and unfortunately not much people do that (exept long OST vids) - I love that you write down/ show the numbers you are talking about (Damage Reduction Examples [DRE]) because I myself have problems working/ imagine numbers if I don't have them written down, therefore talking about numbers without actuall seeing them confuses me and this is just not happening with your guide which is absolutely great :) ~ minor "errors" that I noticed ~ - The numbering of the DRE was inconsistent. Instead of DRE 1 to DRE 4 the numbering was 1 - 2 - 1 - 4, which is no big deal per se but I still wanted to mention it :) - Every time before DRE 4 the shown calculation was: Damage(D) x Damage Absoption(DA) = Damage absorbed! But in the DRE 4 the shown calcutaion for the football helmet is different. There it's D x DA = Damage LEFT, which is a little inconsistent and confused me when I read it the first time ~ what I personally would like to have seen ~ - Since I already mentioned that I have problems imagine numbers it would have been great to also have the numbers of armor durability loss shown on screen as you were talking about it. ~ wishes for future guides ~ - A guide about connected DLCs and how the other worlds "react" when you world hop for the first time, as well as a proper protection against the waves that unfortunately don't start small like when you start a new world but stay the same as in the DLC you jumped from. - A detailed guide about the caves since I'm always very reluctant to go down there since the depth worm just fuck me every time. I really hope this feedback is somewhat helpful for you and I also just wanted to say again that I do enjoy watching your guides ever so much since they are really informative, detailed (and since they are new the stuff shown is correct for once and not outdated like old guides one can find on YT xD) as well as "at least somewhat entertaining" ;) One can clearly see how much time, love and dedication you put in your videos and that pays off with high quality guides which are absolutely recommandable! :) Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to see future guides and learn new stuff I never knew I didn't know :) Also lots of love and health for the christmas season

    @sera-chan8194@sera-chan81943 жыл бұрын
    • Wow - thanks so much for taking the time to write up that level of feedback. I really appreciate it!! GAH TYPOS!!! Bane of my existence! 😆 I'll be completely honest that on this video there was a night or two and at least one morning where I stayed up late or got up really early to work on it. My family has been stuck at home in quarantine due to a potential covid exposure (none of us have had any symptoms and wife tested negative), so they have been doing online school that requires me to monitor them a LOT more than when they are at school. But I really wanted to get the video out during the weekend, so a few rushed mistakes made their way into the final project. And unfortunately with KZhead, once it's posted, it's posted, and can't be fixed unless you delete the upload and do it over (which I've read is horrible for your analytics). Great point about the damage reduction slides though, particularly the last one. I think what I was really trying to do on the last one was show the progression of ultimate damage to the character, but I can see now how the lack of parallelism with the prior slides could be confusing. Future guides WILL include a detailed periodic hound attack guide that focus on just that - and per your suggestion I will try to include impact of world hopping even though I likely won't have started the DLCs at that point. But I think it makes sense to include that with the hound guide ahead of the DLC guides. I'll also do a detailed cave and ancient ruins guide before too much longer. I still have Spring and Summer that I would like to cover sooner rather than later to get that "first year" part taken care of, but after that will have Adventure Mode, Caves / Ruins, and maybe hounds and anything else I can think of that is really pertinent before moving on to Shipwrecked. Oh - and have you heard my plan for Hamlet? I've mentioned it here and there muaahahahah 😎 But yeah - thanks for the feedback - GREAT stuff, and very much appreciated!!!

For the most part though, everything is the same in mobile, so do your best to follow what I cover in the guides BUT - Be extra cautious about combat, as kiting is MUCH more difficult, so ALWAYS make sure you have good armor and at least one back-up armor, as well as healing items. Basically just take whatever tends to kill you and make extra preparations to shore you up in those areas.

This weapon is pretty unique, it durability goes down while hold, and it can be used as a light source as well. This weapon does eletric damage, so its 21 damage goes up to 43 damage, and when used in a wet mob, it can deals 72 damage, which is better than a Dark Sword. • The only thing I don't fully agree on is the idea that the Grass Suit isn't useful. The main use of the Grass Suit is that it's a one-step craft. All of the other armors require more valuable resources and take more time to make. I absolutely consider the Grass Suit to be a great option for when I'm going out without intending to start a fight, but encounter a low-to-mid-tier enemy I wasn't expecting but feel I should deal with. now, a lot of people like to just bring a suit of armor everywhere, but I'm a bit of a packrat, so I try to minimize what I keep on me so I have more room for storage on the go. Plus, the Grass Suit is a great thing to keep in mind even if you do have armor, since it's a good backup if the foe lasts a little longer than your outfit does. Just my two cents.

    • Logs are much cheaper but are also a much bulkier in terms of being able to make log suits them on the fly when you're out on a road trip. Pigskin on the other hand stacks up to 20 and each football helmet or ham bat only takes one. Also, in DST the football helmets are generally the armor of choice as they allow you to keep your backpack with you. All that said, I generally use a lot more log suits than I do football helmets for most day-to-day combat activities.

  • 20:28 - Hey, if you have a surplus of grass and twigs (i.e. it's not winter), this is a great method. Especially for someone as terrible at the combat as I am. Really though, the combat is where these games utterly lose me. I've watched so many videos about the combat that I can probably list off by heart how many hits you can safely get in a row on every mob, but even with 20 hours of practice I can't actually pull this stuff off. It's a pretty freakin' awkward system to try to come to grips with, especially when there's any lag at all to deal with.

    @MediaMunkee@MediaMunkee3 жыл бұрын
    • Hahah - fair enough! One of the great things about Don't Starve though is that there is more than one way to skin the cat! If combat really isn't your thing, you can totally get by completely without it, or just by tanking ALL THE THINGS with armor and backup armor as needed. You'll go through a lot more materials that way, but that is certainly preferable to an early grave!!

    • Yeah, combat in general on mobile and console seems like it would be quite a bit different than on PC. With tentacles it really is a matter of timing. The visual of the tentacle's attack is a bit misleading, as it hits an area around it, regardless of where visually it seems to be hitting. But once you get the range and timing down, they're not too bad. Or just hire a bunch of pigs, or find a good warzone and let the other natives of the swamp take them out for you!

So for example, if you're fighting a beefalo, CTRL F to hit it the first time, and after that you don't need to use CTRL any more. Also, in some situations it works well to use your mouse to move away from the target, then simply press F to move back to attack. • Well, a certain someone never sent me any beer, so whatdya expect?! 🤣 But never fear - more Wagstaff is on the way, and I'll be doing only Wagstaff through the end of the year. Definitely at least 2 episode, maybe 3, time permitting!

And I even used Wilson, whom I haven't played in over a year. I like my gal, Wigfrid, though. Her and the robot are great in the caves.

  • Can u do in don't starve pocket edition thanks

    • Honestly, I don't even know how to record gameplay footage off my phone LOL But even if I did I don't think I would do pocket edition. It's basically the same game, just not fully updated and has a LOT of bugs in it. But basically everything I cover in these guides applies to mobile, except for the more recent updated stuff that mobile doesn't have.

    • @@salendrak in mobile dropping only 1 item at time is time-consuming, then it's nearly impossible switching from walking cane to weapon and never trust tentacles without overloaded WX or fully belly Wolfgang and magiluminescience. No, roads are VERY rarely near the tentacles. Then it's also very difficult to kite and I often watch myself being brutally killed by mobs after accidentally hitting them. Only good things are: butterflies are easy to kill, you can stop the time by pressing the inventory or the crafting bar.

    • @@user-eg7xe7px4q Oh totally - fighting tentacles by any method is a pain in pocket edition! So is shaving beefalo lol - I've died a couple of times on mobile accidentally hitting one 😆

  • 18:50 - As a beginner I didn't know how to handle the birchnut trees. Best way I found was to run in & torch the tree👍 Also clearing out some of the surrounding trees helps prevent a massive forest fire.
