My name’s Ed Pratt and from March 2015 to July 2018 I pedalled a unicycle 22,000miles around the world. Over that time I crossed 4 continents and performed over 12 million pedal rotations on my 40kg, 36’’ touring unicycle. When I finally retuned home after 3 years I became the first person to ever officially ride a unicycle around the world. But actually, that last bit's not true… let me explain...

    • i dont have a problem with any "record" that can be reasonably proven to have happened. if Guinness wants its book to be written a certain way then so be it. but not being accepted by them does not remove even 1% of Ed's achievement. it sounds like Guinness wants there to be more of an athletic and luck based record for this category. making it tens of thousands of miles with no injury that downs you for more than 2 weeks requires considerable luck. taking breaks like Ed did lets your body heal and reduces chance of injury, waiting out the winter removes tons of risk. these things i am perfectly fine with. imho this record is more about mental toughness and less about athleticism and luck.

But the record isn't the be-all-end-all, Ed did ultimately opt to ignore 2 of their criteria to give the ride genuine meaning and ensure his safety, which is more important. While I think 2 weeks is short considering the scale of the journey, passing through the antipodal points for me would be the minimum criteria to really say you cycled around the world, otherwise you could just end up wobbling through a single hemisphere in a 'sort of' loop and miss out on so many precious sights.

That was like 10 years ago, and I can't remember what the numbers and formulas were. XD Just think about plotting 2 lines on a graph, unless they are parallel, they will cross at some point, and it is at that point where you get the right answer using the wrong formula.

He has tons of shots of him walking a ridge line or into the distance, and it was only after they showed a (timelapsed) shot of him coming back for the camera afterwards that I realized what he was actually having to do for those shots! • For those of you saying, "he got/deserved the record anyway"... you're completely missing the point! The point is that it's *better* that he didn't get the record because it means he lived his own life, made his own choices, and made the journey *for himself*. If you're stuck thinking "he deserves the record" you're stuck thinking "other people's metrics are more important than your own". Imagine if he followed the rules precisely and then at the end said, for example, "yeah, I did it... but I just wish I'd spent more time with that lovely girl I met ... I regretted that decision every single day of my last 630 days ... and for what? A record that no-one's ever going to look up?!" And then he'd give the advice, "If you ever consider doing such a thing, make sure you do it for you, not for the record. It's what I should have done".

    • Having a Guinness record is as valuable as you make it to be, their records are not "official", no such thing exists. I'm just not sure it's necessarily better, but I agree Guinness is just a private company and they don't owe you a record even if people think you deserve it. Same with stuff like the modern Olympics, some people spend a life time trying to achieve a medal, but is it worth it? And we agree, that's the actual question, indeed.
