The Adventure Zone - And You See Lup

Animatic number 2 from episode 67 of The Adventure Zone, a D&D podcast by the McElroys!
Art and sound design by me, story and audio by the McElroys
The first song is a pitched up version of The Chalice because Griffin didn't release the version that played under the flashback (and I didn't like the pacing of the dialogue, sorry Griffin).
Second song is Disrobed.

  • This is a beautiful example of show don't tell. I didn't think this scene could get more beautiful after the 2 dozen animatics I've seen. Not to discredit others' hard work, but I was wrong.

    • It _would_ be a beautiful example of 'show, don't tell' if it made any sense. I'm guessing I'll have to watch the original game session for me to know what's going on in this animatic.

      @KyrstOak@KyrstOak5 жыл бұрын
    • @@KyrstOak you could watch other animatic of this scene because they have Griffin's narration in them. Or spend like 80-ish hours listening to that entire arc of the podcast.

  • goddamn this made me happy all over again. i LOVE that you went through and put in the audio from the scenes that griffin was describing, just SUCH a good touch. every detail of this was perfect.

  • Ugh, this is FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC. I'm normally a little put off by animatics lacking the Griffin narration, but you did such a great job with the cinematic elements of these scenes that it came out beautifully. This is what I want from the eventual Adventure Zone movie that's totally gonna happen some day.

    • I know right!? This is so amazing. The music that tracked though, and the sound effects just all made it so great. I would be so down for a TAZ movie

    • They had better give it at least three movies. The richness of character and story deserve time at least as much as (and arguably much more than) The Lord of the Rings.

      @michaelbreis@michaelbreis6 жыл бұрын
    • theres over 80 hours of podcast, 3 movies woudn't cut anywhere close to enough. a movie PER ARC is the least that woudnt rush the story too much

      @solluxpesters3848@solluxpesters38486 жыл бұрын
    • Movie? Honey, no. 20-minute episodic TV series. 8 seasons (for each arc, to put it roughly) plus a couple specials for things that happened in bonus/live episodes. 20 minutes, I think, fits well with the pacing and humor of the show, although making an episode per actual episode of TAZ might be ill-advised, despite the amount of narration it would cut out. Like, fight scenes that took almost an entire episode of podcasting could easily be done in a minute of animated television. But then there might be things that take longer to explain while translating to a visual medium and cleaning up the story a bit. For starters, if you keep at least some of the OOC banter (and how could you not), you have to have a set with all the McElroys in a basement you can cut to at a moment's notice, but pick which times it's worth it for the flow of a polished TV show, like when was it funny, and when was it not funny enough to justify the break in tension? Making a TAZ animated TV show sounds like hella work, honestly, but when you think about, it, it's technically already halfway done compared to other shows built from the ground up. You've already got a completed masterpiece of a story and all the voice work you could need (unless you want some awkward lines re-dubbed), the animation and editing isn't easy, but neither is the other stuff, and that's taken care of.

  • Ok so normally I never comment on anything, but this animatic made me cry so now im OBLIGATED the emotion packed into this is just. on point. Lup's joy when she was released (and really all the emotions she shows, but THAT PART ESPECIALLY GOT ME), the sound effects, the EXCELLENT cuts and direction around griffin's narration. God this is just so good. Fucking stellar work.

  • And I also love the backround music for this moment, it starts off very calm and sort of depressing, much how the scene starts, but slowly picks up speed as lup is killed, then she's entrapped inside her umbrella, until she finally escapes and the music that seemed to have a panicked and impatient feel to it soon turns into a song relating to triumph and power as the waiting finally paid off, and she escapes, stronger then before.
