It shows that Knight is the weakest Rocksteady game especially in terms of writing (deliberately not bringing back Paul Dini) and boss battles. PS: AA is my least favorite. the only thing i love about it is the environment, music & superbatclaw.

    • I mean that’s just a poor design choice in between devs. But i agree it does make a difference though. The grappling animations seem pretty identical just in Knighhts it’s not as polished to not show the jarring Transition/in between motions as shown in the Arkham series. But past that you’d think folks(devs and producers)! would see a good idea and great execution and think to just repeat and replicate those results.

      @dertlash@dertlash Жыл бұрын
    • @@MrSquishy0 It's not about physical mass (both of these are just 3d shapes moving forward slowly), It's about the details. In Arkham Knight the camera dynamically moves with the subject (batman), bobbing with each step, adding emphasis to each footsteps. The animations are long, flowing, and seamless and the sound design also imparts more details that immerse you further; loud footsteps with multiple different sound effects that trigger, so each footfall sounds unique and close to what we experience in real life, also varied depending on the surface he makes contact with. Compare it to Batgirl who has a short, stiff walking animations with no variation or other visual flourishes, so you can clearly see the animation loops. The camera is fixed and doesn't emphasise anything, and the sound effects are muted and samey, you can hear the repetition. Hell even look at the pedestrian to the side, he doesn't even have shadows. Just in that one clip there's a WORLD of difference between the level of care that the Arkham Knight devs took to create an immersive, realistic world, and the Gotham Knights devs who I personally believe just did the bare minimum to meet their contractual obligations and get the game out on time. I just want to add that let's not forget that Arkham Knight had an absolutely terrible launch too. Performance issues across the board crippling the game's success that couldn't be addressed in a timely manner beacause they were dealing with their own pressures to release the game, but under rough edges you see a project filled with love and care. Nowadays, big open world games like this are formulaic as ever and created to tick boxes instead of providing an immersive experience.

The car always spawn just outside of your view so its not just magically appearing in front of you when though thats exactly what is happening. The witcher 3 does the same thing with the horse, it will spawn just slightly out of view and come running up to you. Even GTA would try spawn your personal cars where ever the player wasn't looking It seems these days the devs don't care enough to do that anymore

If you use the batmobile you can hit the fence it will destroy it board by board. If you drive slow. Which is unimportant but it shows attention to detail. Most of the scenic destruction is very well done.

The technology was very primitive but the guys who made it were industry veterans with decades of experience, they used all that knowledge and experience and then applied it to the new CGI technology. For example the guy that oversaw the animations had never done computer animations before but he was one of the best stop motion animators in the world. • The difference is art direction and aesthetics. Most normal people don't see art direction or aesthetics as separate from graphical fidelity. So as not to bore people, the simplified reason of why games "don't look/feel good" nowadays is because technology has become a lot more accessible and cheap compared to before. In the past, if you wanted to make a good game, you needed at least a certain minimum level of skill, knowledge and experience JUST to make everything work at all. Technology could not compensate for mistakes or oversights, and we had to get extremely creative and smart. Nowadays, technology can do a LOT of the heavy lifting so people don't need to do insane tricks to get things working. This is good, for the most part. Saves a lot of time and man hours. The issue is that some people (and you see this a lot with inexperienced UNREAL devs), just decide to let the tech handle it without giving it a second thought. So they just throw all their assets in without proper budget or optimization. And this results in increased hardware requirements for the players. The second big issue is that there are diminishing returns to realistic graphics. Beyond a certain point of realism, it just costs too much compared to the gains.

I've had clients ask me to design a scene of an apartment in Los Angeles with the golden gate bridge seen from the window.... People want realism but often forget that actual realism is boring. True artists know how to look at realsim as a spectrum and know when and how to exaggerate for the sake of appeal, this is something that suits or AI will never understand.

  • I'm 101% convinced Gotham Knights was supposed to be a live service game with all those amazing skins locked behind paywalls (or absolutely insane levels of grinding), but the devs backpedaled on it after seeing Avengers crash and burn. It's the only explanation why the skins look so good and there is so much customization options when everything else looks and feels so low effort.

  • I’ve played Arkham knight for every system and now the switch. Yea the graphics for the switch OLED aren’t as good as the other systems but having AK in your handheld system feels awesome. Getting those hours in to 100% every mission gives you a sense of accomplishment. I’m still looking for all of the riddler trophies to be able to capture him and activate the real protocol but whatever it’s fun and I haven’t gotten bored doing it

  • The major difference is one game was made with the tools that did not allow it to be rushed and still have a level of ""polish"". Due to modern engines doing all the "work" for devs, studios push more stupid deadlines which makes them rely more on the engine's own graphical "enhancements". Games like Arkham are prettier and more optimized because every single location you visit were carefully built within the limitations of the tools handed to the dev, which makes them both prettier, and more optimized. A concrete example of this is classic Fear's lighting fidelity. In short, game development has become a much more streamlined, automated system where productivity takes over product. Efficiency over efficacy. Think of it as a mass produced t-shirt compared to a finely crafted hand sown one. You'll miss out on a lot of the itty bitty quirks and details that makes the hand sown one so good, and really shows how low gaming has stooped lately.
