After gaining promotion to the Premier League, Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town have become the first team in more than a decade to gain back to back promotions from League One to reach the Premier League. In fact, since his appointment, McKenna has picked up more points than any other manager in England’s top 4 divisions. So how has the former Manchester United coach turned the Tractor Boys into one of the best teams in England?

Will Kieran McKenna keep Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season? 🤔
Depends on summer recruitment! Hopefully United will loan them a few youngsters, and maybe an Amad!
NO!
Definitely. I think the quality of the Prem is overstated and the teams up to including Man Utd as it currently stands are all beatable. So that's 13 teams to take 4 points from each giving us 52 points minimum.
Only if they get recruitment right. Plus translate their pressing principles to the epl
@@JTBCPFC😂
That was a brilliant breakdown of Ipswich. I'm a season ticket holder and you nailed it. Great job.
Agreed , nice to hear an accurate verdict of how we play , rather than the lazy , their lucky 😴
I'm an Ipswich season ticket holder and this analysis is spot on. Most detailed I've seen. One thing missing if I am being pedantic is the impact of subs (regular use of 3 subs at a time) and amount of late goals. Subs particularly in the no.10 position have been crucial (for much of first half of the season Omari was a super sub, and then second half of the season, Sarmiento adopted the role).
Your fighting spirit is incredible - 32 points gained from losing positions in the Championship is something else
The subs have been awesome. Also McKenna's awareness of the opposition's tactics is amazing and he acts so quickly to make tactical changes and regain control of the game. When the fans see something on the pitch that needs dealing with McKenna is already sorting it out. We trust that man without question.
@@johnsmith-es7zk100 per cent. Loved Chaplin going down after 20-30 mins in so many games to give Mckenna a chance to make tactical tweaks and relay to team.
So refreshing to hear someone from outside the club ‘get’ our style of play; this is the first time I’ve seen it. Also loved that you recognise that we do have a lot of quality players that can make the step up, main thing is improving on what’s already there and getting depth. Hoping KMc’s tricky blues can spring a few upsets!
"SOMETIMES MAYBE SH-" I can't be the only one who heard that lol 😅
I thought I was tripping 😂
Watched every minute of every game this season, one of the best breakdown’s I’ve seen. Hirst and Moore are generally central and actually very rarely drift out to the left side. Chaplin’s goal against Hull demonstrates that left hand side diamond perfectly with Luongo dropping in, combining with Harness and Davis.
You're right about Moore but Hirst definitely drifts into wide areas more frequently for knock-ons/wide runs - an example that springs to mind is the 3rd goal against Hull (H) as well as his assist for Aluko's goal against Bristol rovers in the cup
Great analysis. The Ipswich attack is incredible, proven by two seasons of being a top scoring side, even beating Leicester, Leeds, and Southampton tally who are recent prem teams. The only nervousness when entering the premier league is the shaky defence. Although good by championship standards, because Ipswich score so many goals, in the step up they will need a premier defence, at the moment they will be punished severely by top 6 teams, but McKenna is no fluke, so every faith he will sharpen all corners
I'm a Ipswich fan and you've got this spot on, great vid
This is spot on. The most consise and informative break down I've seen. Followed!
Its been 22 years since Ipswich was in the Premier League (all my life til this point in time)
i was in the same classroom in a tiny place called vilage called glassdrumond, aparatly me and him were good mates and the otnly 2 that played football at break time. my mum was a teacher there so i went for a year thenleft to go to the school a minutes walk away and he moved to fermanagh. my mum caught a glimpse of him when it was him and ole and said "holy shit thats liam mckenna from glassdrummond school, you him were good mstes. when i say small i mean reception to primary 3 all in the same roomk, i sat behind him and were constantly messing about. im a signed music producer and hes one of the best coaches in the world
This is more or less spot on although as others have said, Broadhead is also important. He usually plays in the left, can hold the ball, has good feet and scores. Glad to see you give Burns the credit he deserves. The other issue is the use of subs. There is little difference in the quality of subs and those they replace so there are always fresh legs in the second half. Finally there is the X factor- team spirit, cohesion and belief. They often recover from losing positions and score late. Happens regularly so it’s no fluke
Why are so many people talking about managerial replacements post Fergie era when back then, and NO ONE talked about Sir Alex himself had placed lower than 10th in his first 4 years at Man Utd THREE times? Believe in the Process of Ten Hag.
great tactical analysis Dave - as an itfc season ticket holder these past two seasons have been phenomenal after the dross of the previous 10 plus years - totally agree with your points about how the team needs to be further strengthened and developed
Great video , I’m blessed to have witnessed McKenna ball since he become manager of Ipswich , it’s brilliant to watch , high energy excitement, I am very confident he will surprise a few next season , I completely agree with your views on where the team needs back up/improvement.
I don't think it will be a good idea to change ETH. He developed a team with his playing mentality. If another manager comes, he has to change the whole team structure again. Again, it will take one season to accustom a team with a new manager playing styles. So, ETH should give another season and give ETH 4/5 signing to see how he manage the team. It takes time for players to get accustomed to his system because some of his signings are bad and there are lots of injury issues. Under ETH many young players outshine in OT like Mainoo, Garnacho, Hojlund, and now Amad. He gives sustainability in the squad which is hard to see in other previous managers after Sir Alex.
Brilliant video. Gives me hope for next season in the Premiership 👏
That Amad shout is well informed
The only thing that I can contribute here is that the same was said about Vincent Kompany's Burnley a year ago... They were nailing it in the Championship, beating everyone handsomely, playing possession based football, sexy football etc... and when they came to the Prem League, they were the whipping boys... milking cows. The jump from the Championship to the PL is extremely high... too high for tiny clubs like Ipswich to survive...
Utterly absurd comment. Ipswich has a tremendous and illustrious history and is not a tiny club. It is the only club to have had a manager that went on to win England the World Cup - did you know that ? It also made the reputation of the late great Sir Bobby Robson.
Tiny club?
@@paddycable1723you have a great history. So do Burnley. I would love ipswich to stay up. But they are a tiny club in what matters now. Funding and size of crowd.
They are way better than Burnley
Interesting analysis. McKenna has many tricks and is still learning.
Now i get it. Mckenna was the man behind those long balls from the centre backs.
The united team just cannot seem to press, the only thing missing
@@emopunkyyy that itself is quite a lot.
Awesome analysis, cant wait to get into my seat for our Premiership ride. Love that "will work in the premier league" I really believe we are going to shock the premiership snobs! - Oh and I need to add "Davis for England"
A good analysis of the team’s tactics. Yes Ipswich can stay up in the PR next season. Like you said the key to their success is keeping their loan players , and adding a few to bolster the defence and Sam morsey’s role .
Spot on, very well done
Great analysis bro
The PL is a different animal , it's going to be extremly difficult to survive . I think we are going to need at least 6 or 7 quality signings and the coach has got to fashion the new players quickly . I would expect us to finish anywhere in the bottom six tbh, having said that 17th would do for me in the next season .
Can you please make a video for possible transfers for Ipswich Town ?
Great analysis. Excited to see McKenna’s tactics in the Premier League. Maybe if EtH doesn’t work out we can have him in 2026.
Hiya Dave could you do an anaylis on Thomas Tuchel to Utd what is tactics and transfer targets would be.
I got a photo with you after the game. You called Martial lazy ahahha
Loved that analysis of ITFC
Hi Dave can you do a video on potential managers to replace Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton next season and they tactics?
great vid love mckenna, ive been saying the same thing. he would do great at United.
Pain as a Wycombe fan selling Al-Hamadi to Wimbledon 😢
From a PR season ticket holder. This analysis is spot on.
Does he use a double pivot,if so would Mount work in that double pivot?
Great breakdown of McKenna's tactics! Do you think he'll ever reach the level of a top 4 manager? BTW Was that Gattuso audio on purpose? 😂
The Gattuso audio just clicked when listening again!
Nope that slipped through post production checks 😅
Of course he'll reach that level and exceed it.
Brilliant video this
I could see some of Manchester United’s academy players being loaned to Ipswich. Maybe Harry Amass?
McKenna can be a future United manager but not right now. I want United to continue with ETH at least for another season, and likewise, want McKenna to get EPL experience before taking the big job
i want kieran mckenna to replace erik ten haag in the summer. most players already know him and hes done sucha great job he deserves a chance
Great analysis. I think you may have one thing wrong. Hutchinson played on the right, not the left
Hi Dave can you do something on Julien Lopetegui as new West Ham manager is tactics and potential signings
I hope he is good enough to be one of the best managers
If he keeps them in the premier league for next season he will be good
Remember when we were told it was just vibes under Ole (we could sure do with vibes now)?
*SHHHHH! don't give away the SECRET FORMULA*
You missed the importance of Hladky being good with his feet. Also the impact of multiple like for like substitutions around the 60 minute mark who provide extra energy. We scored a lot of late goals.
.... sounds like he's missed the basics then.
Morsy won’t miss games through fatigue or injury but suspension 😂
If he does well next season I would love for him to take over Man United after. Apparently he is a United fan ;)
give him 2 seasons at least to prove himself
Utd fans already vilified him, blaming him as one of the reasons why they were crap a 2 1/2 years ago. You don't deserve him
@@JP.708 never blamed him or Carrick. I actually wanted Carrick to stay till the end of 21-22 season instead of taking Rangnick as interim manager
When kmk joined ipswich we had like hundreds slagging him off from Utd I think he will be with us for a few seasons his love was to play in the premiership.
@@JP.708you're right. We don't deserve him. He's nowhere near qualified enough for a huge global club like Manchester United
Ipswich fan here and the change in our club with change of ownership and McKenna as head coach has been remarkable. We have quite a few loan players and players coming to the end of their contracts. We obviously need to invest in additions to the playing squad but it’s the balance of not doing a Nottingham Forrest and instead adding players who buy into our way and the dressing room.
Dipshits town are going down
Nathan Broadhead? He was not mentioned even though he was joint top scorer. Also effective subs were key.
I am Swedish Ipswich fan. Nathan surely one of my favs. Super sub! 👍👍
Kind of embarrassing that United fans were calling him clueless and calling for him to be sacked at United.. And probably worse is that apparently some of the United players didn't have any trust in him either.
People shud calm down about mckenna cause he still needs time 😂😂
He was part of the creators of McFred... that was a tragedy
Mourinho did the same with Lukaku and Zlatan...Nothing new. Benzema at madrid did too. This seems old
Amad isn’t going anywhere, unless United decide they need to cash out and sell him.
If Ipswich do well in the Prem under McKenna, you KNOW he us gonna be linked with the United job in a few years when the job is up for grabs again 😂
How long will it take you people to understand tactics are not the problem..
Very interesting
they will not hang on to this boss hes going to the top
I would love to pick up Davis at Utd. He’s old enough that he won’t block Amas’ development, but he’ll also be ridiculously cheap.
I think you are deluding yourself, if you think he will be cheap, let alone ridiculously so.
Reminder: we played more eyes-pleasing football under Ole than Ten Hag ever was. Now we know that both McKenna and Carrick arent as inept as the likes of Man United supporters made them to be. I think the main reason why we had such huge drop of performance in 21/22 was due to lack of quality reinforcement, can you imagine playing the same ol' McFred for 3 seasons straight? Yet it was what happened at that time.
You think the player want to play for mckenna? You can have the best high pressing tactician coach in the world but those player wont play high pressing for sure. They are built for counter attacking style from mourinho and ole reign. Get rid of the player first before the coach
The title of this video is very misleading
We are staying up
Overload a word not used by us oldies! 😂
You are all shyinh away to say it that McKenna is playing same Ole style. You guys don't just wanna acknowledge it cuz you feel Ole is not a good coach .
Mckenna at United?
All I care about is, can Marcelo Bielsa talk about Ipswich please
The funny thing is that they never win the league. Imagine they make Europe or the new Palace and finish the runner up of the second half, 12th
It would be more accurate to have Broadhead in that left-sided role not Hutchinson who alternated with Burns for that right-wing position most of the season.
true, but he played well at No 10 and Burns must start when fit
Reminiscent of how we used to kinda play under Ole as well, free flowing and quick transitions
😂
Think Hutchinson is the only loanee we need to resign. Think we can improve on all the rest
Good tactical breakdown. Only thing I would add is that Chelsea have signaled that Hutchinson will join them for preseason and will be assessed. He may be integrated into the squad, or sent on loan back to Ipswich or another club. If Sterling is sold, there’s a place for him in the team on the left. Seeing that this loan went well, Chelsea may be giving Ipswich another player if not Hutch
Chelsea have a recent history of not knowing what to do with their players.
@@jontalbot1 it is still Chelsea’s player.
Great, now everyone knows !! 😂
i hope they don't end up like burnley and respect premier league football
Thank you for this. Kompany was hyped up same way as these people are doing now and it didn't end well. When you realise the premier league is a different entity. Most championship tactics won't work in premier league take it or leave it. All what these guys are just doing is ignorance
@@CtdGgames01 they really can't play like this against teams above 13th place if they don't want to be completely overrun
@@RishiSharma-sf6eu exactly. It's easy to hype up a team when they do well in championship but premier league is different story.. for the past few years non I mean non of the promoted teams have done something excellent in the premier league. Probably first few games they play good and off for the rest of the season
@@CtdGgames01 they are both different
Hell naaaaahhh
How is brandon williams not getting into this side as a rb
Because he's not here anymore.
Short answer? Unavailable. Long answer: He disappeared in Dec and we've not seen him since. He's reportedly injured, but then rumours swirled about him getting arrested again and then he ended up in court for a similar, but different matter a few weeks ago. He was playing RB for us before that disappearance.
Tuanzebe has stepped in & been quite good at RB, along with Harry Clarke, but as has been said Brandon’s been awol
Brandon a great footballer just has some issues to leave behind (you can probably work it out) and he’ll be back in the game if he wants it
He showed real promise but performances became erratic - I suspect due to off-field stuff. He was particularly poor against QPR 0-0 - was subbed early and that was pretty much it. Shame.
