Total cost: $2,600
A-Pak Paving, based out of Haymarket, VA resurfaced the asphalt driveway of our home located in Sterling, VA on April 18, 2015. The crew seemed well organized, the equipment in good condition and the work was performed fairly quickly and efficiently. I was especially impressed by the crew's attention to detail, their machinery operating skills and their manual labor strength and endurance on this hot and humid day. They were also careful not to damage our siding and the plantings along our driveway. We are very pleased with the results! That said, this being our first experience with asphalt paving, what do you think of the job done by A-Pak Paving?
One of the best comments:
I recently watched you're video about the installation and sealcoating of you're asphalt driveway. Just thought I'd reach out to you with some friendly input. I've been in the asphalt pavement business for over 10 years so I've got a bit of knowledge. Firstly the reason the asphalt is so coarse is because it appears to be a material referred to as 3TS. A lot of contractors will use this mix because it saves them money. Normally for a new driveway installation or a dig out and repave you would start with a compacted and finely graded stone base and then you would use an asphalt binder for the initial base on top of the stone. The binder is an asphalt comprised of larger stones and ends up being extremely coarse, this layer should be applied at a minimum of 2". After the binder is laid and compacted with a roller then the final layer of extremely fine asphalt should be applied on top of it at 1 1/2 to 2" and then rolled again. Instead of doing this a lot of contractors opt to install 3TS asphalt which is a mix of large and small stone which they do for 2 reasons. First instead of having to do 2 steps they can do one step using the same material for the whole job and second because instead of giving you a 4" driveway they can normally cheat the homeowner and lay down 2-3" of blacktop and line their pockets. As for the sealcoating of the driveway the best tip I can give you is to squeegee the sealcoat on in a giant U shape to ensure even coverage and to make sure you let sealer flow over the sides of the driveway because the first spots to usually give out are the unsealed edges. Hope this helps!

  • I am a asphalt worker from Michigan, There is many problems with this work, 1. The but joint at the road is to narrow making the bump up over the curb to high. 2. no tack was applied to the old asphalt, with out the tack the new asphalt and old asphalt will move differently and the new surface will end up peeling up. 3. The mix used has to large aggregate in it judging by the video, it is probably a binder mix , not a surface mix 4. The mix appears to be cold meaning it wont bind together has well.

  • Excellent work, great attention to detail, very good price. Thanks for sharing and giving the company a well done. Asphalt is a combination of 3 sizes small rocks with pitch, an unusable remnant of oil processing. All asphalt will shrink. You can apply a surface coating after a couple years to make it nice and black again and minimize shrinking and cracking. Asphalt that is removed is recycled into new asphalt, unlike concrete.

  • On observation, I have a few thoughts and concerns. 1) The original asphalt at the top end looked somewhat level with the garage floor. 2) These guys cut out/remove about three feet across the top and then fill in with new asphalt to the floor level. 3) They add what appears to be 2" to 4" of fresh asphalt to the entire driveway and thus raising the asphalt at the top peek to be higher than the garage floor. That would seem to cause a grade/slope towards the garage and thus with heavy rains could cause water to pool at the garage door or even leak into the garage. 4) I did not see the contractor heat up to prepare for the new asphalt to bind to and neither did I see them use a hot asphalt liquid binder. With those thoughts and observations, I would suspect that the new asphalt will begin cracking and breaking away within a relatively very short time.

  • I've been a heavy equipment operator for 22 years and worked in asphalt for the last 7 of them. Kevin in the description is mostly on target. They did pretty nice job. It is nice to have 2 layers if you can, but you can get away with one in a small private driveway like yours. It is not going to see a lot of truck traffic, you aren't going to park a tank on it. It is fine. You can't tell how long they waited between the 2 layers at the end. If it wasn't at least a few hours, you really didn't get 2 layers. It's going to cool together as one layer which is not what you want but it's fine for a private driveway. I would have liked to see them put some tack down on the part they didn't tare out so the new stuff sticks to it a little better. The size of the roller was fine for the job, I would have like to have heard his vibrators coming on for at least one pass all the way across for better compaction.

    • I noticed they need to stay off for 5 days, I remember driving on freshly surfaced country roads growing up, are those made differently to allow immediate use?

      @themonkeyhand@themonkeyhand7 жыл бұрын
    • No. What they mean is don't park on it for 5 days. An asphalt roller works like a rolling pin. Spreading and stretching the asphalt into place. Driving your car on it has a similar but much lesser effect on it. You aren't helping much but as long as it has cooled and been compacted enough that you don't sink in it, you aren't hurting it. Parking is every different. You aren't smoothing and stretching, you are sitting in one spot smashing it. You can ruin that smooth surface and maybe leave indentations where your tires were

    • and to be completely fair to them Herminio, he may have just not filmed that part or maybe cut it when he edited because he didn't know it was any different than the static rolling

  • You guys work your butts off. I guess you have to to make a living doing asphalt driveway paving all year round. I have a great deal of respect for those that do physical labor every day. Those work boot attachments your crew uses to get up close to the home and garage door apron look like they work pretty well for compaction. :-) Never saw those before.

  • Roll/vibrate those hand joints you raked almost immediately just pinching them in, don’t step those in. Turn the burners on and let it heat up before taking off, the screed finally got hot 3/4 of the way through the driveway and tightened up the mat, no tack could make it slip where they turn into the driveway. We all do it a little differently though, finish looked good.

  • Great video. I video taped the excavation and back filling of our driveway and now this spring going to have it paved. I watched your video to get an idea of what to expect. Good job and thanks for sharing. Is the drive still in good shape? the reason I ask is because like you they will be paving over some old asphalt and I was wondering how that holds up. Thanks for sharing. -John

    • It's pretty standard practice where I'm at, my company and a few other bigger ones here will use them once in awhile, using them where they were on the edge of the driveway we would do, tamping with the shoes will help keep the heat in the asphalt until the roller hits it
