A-Pak Paving Resurfaces Our Asphalt Driveway
Total cost: $2,600
A-Pak Paving, based out of Haymarket, VA resurfaced the asphalt driveway of our home located in Sterling, VA on April 18, 2015. The crew seemed well organized, the equipment in good condition and the work was performed fairly quickly and efficiently. I was especially impressed by the crew's attention to detail, their machinery operating skills and their manual labor strength and endurance on this hot and humid day. They were also careful not to damage our siding and the plantings along our driveway. We are very pleased with the results! That said, this being our first experience with asphalt paving, what do you think of the job done by A-Pak Paving?
One of the best comments:
I recently watched you're video about the installation and sealcoating of you're asphalt driveway. Just thought I'd reach out to you with some friendly input. I've been in the asphalt pavement business for over 10 years so I've got a bit of knowledge. Firstly the reason the asphalt is so coarse is because it appears to be a material referred to as 3TS. A lot of contractors will use this mix because it saves them money. Normally for a new driveway installation or a dig out and repave you would start with a compacted and finely graded stone base and then you would use an asphalt binder for the initial base on top of the stone. The binder is an asphalt comprised of larger stones and ends up being extremely coarse, this layer should be applied at a minimum of 2". After the binder is laid and compacted with a roller then the final layer of extremely fine asphalt should be applied on top of it at 1 1/2 to 2" and then rolled again. Instead of doing this a lot of contractors opt to install 3TS asphalt which is a mix of large and small stone which they do for 2 reasons. First instead of having to do 2 steps they can do one step using the same material for the whole job and second because instead of giving you a 4" driveway they can normally cheat the homeowner and lay down 2-3" of blacktop and line their pockets. As for the sealcoating of the driveway the best tip I can give you is to squeegee the sealcoat on in a giant U shape to ensure even coverage and to make sure you let sealer flow over the sides of the driveway because the first spots to usually give out are the unsealed edges. Hope this helps!
Why am I at home watching this..?! And yet it’s fascinating!!
Satisfaction to watch, hell in real life. I worked with driveways by us with Billy.
Awesome job! Looks great!
Looks great. Nice job. I am sure the Homeowner was Very Happy.
I am a asphalt worker from Michigan, There is many problems with this work, 1. The but joint at the road is to narrow making the bump up over the curb to high. 2. no tack was applied to the old asphalt, with out the tack the new asphalt and old asphalt will move differently and the new surface will end up peeling up. 3. The mix used has to large aggregate in it judging by the video, it is probably a binder mix , not a surface mix 4. The mix appears to be cold meaning it wont bind together has well.
Bingo on all counts!
Not to mention how long it seemed to take before they rolled it..
I pave over here in ny and i am damn near in tears watching this. It is so bad
Also looks like a lip at the garage, nothing like rain on the garage floor!
Homeowner probably went with the cheapest bid. Also the fact they’re doing asphalt work in sneakers is a dead giveaway these guys are a joke.
Always good to see a man put in some honest money in his pocket the hard way
muito bem feito! caprichado! congratulations!
What a good job you are doing today and tomorrow at work
At first I thought that cannot be good, but it ends in perfection 😎👍

Nowhere near perfection. Homeowner would’ve been better off leaving it alone.

double steel finally makes an appearance at 5:40. this was so interesting to watch considering i'm in the industry. I was wondering what the hell i was watching for the first 5 minutes though.
That was painful to watch. They did way more hand work then necessary. And why did that guy compact it with his feet. They did it all the hard way

Thanks for putting this up. I'm getting a new drive this spring, and I looked at all the alternatives. Yours looks great. You solidified my decision to go asphalt. Where I live, concrete would crack during the winters, and pavers or brick would have cost me close to 10k. These guys knew what they were doing and did a great job. It looks great.
If you see a company doing it like this look somewhere else. Evrything they just did was horrible
@@outragedgamer1288 lol how that? Mostly praise here from experienced people.
What a fantastic transformation! A-Pak Paving really did a remarkable job resurfacing your asphalt driveway. It's evident that they take pride in their work, from the organization of their crew to their attention to detail. Your driveway looks brand new, and it's clear that they put in the effort to ensure both quality and durability. Somewhere out there there's a dad admiring his new driveway on a Sunday in a pair of sketchers.
It looks pretty porous to me. But so did mine when it was laid. I wasn't happy with my edges as they looked a little ragged, but I can see the same thing in this video. Compaction while hot is the key.
If done right your supposed to use a rake to tap the edges as you go, then whack the edges, when done right you get a consistent straight edge
I was in the asphalt business for 35 years. They actually did a great job with the edges the way they compacted it. Once the dirt birm was raked back up to the edges it will look awesome.
I thought the crew from Deliverance had come to lay your driveway.
Coming at you from London Ontario Canada, Great looking ethics and quality
very satisfying
Just had mine done. Very similar to yours except I double wided it from single 2 car lane to a double wide onto virgin lawn, enough for 4 cars total if needed. my driveway is also is lil rough. But still not as rough as yours. I would say 20% less rough. My total cost was $2200.

When you SAW them removing it by hand. What does your age have to do with laughing at their extra work?
Excellent work, great attention to detail, very good price. Thanks for sharing and giving the company a well done. Asphalt is a combination of 3 sizes small rocks with pitch, an unusable remnant of oil processing. All asphalt will shrink. You can apply a surface coating after a couple years to make it nice and black again and minimize shrinking and cracking. Asphalt that is removed is recycled into new asphalt, unlike concrete.
for a moment i thought that guy was going to compact the whole thing with those boot things lol
LOL
Ithink it was more to smooth the surface ratter than compacting XD

Weird shape.
I work in the industry and i think the methods employed were very labour intensive. An excavator could do the job of digging out and compacting some areas also a vib plate would have been handie.

Good day everyone your work looks amazing. I’m working for a town in Saskatchewan and I have potash to fix town roads. Could you tell me what product you recommend for us to use? The material I use currently doesn’t get hard.
On observation, I have a few thoughts and concerns. 1) The original asphalt at the top end looked somewhat level with the garage floor. 2) These guys cut out/remove about three feet across the top and then fill in with new asphalt to the floor level. 3) They add what appears to be 2" to 4" of fresh asphalt to the entire driveway and thus raising the asphalt at the top peek to be higher than the garage floor. That would seem to cause a grade/slope towards the garage and thus with heavy rains could cause water to pool at the garage door or even leak into the garage. 4) I did not see the contractor heat up to prepare for the new asphalt to bind to and neither did I see them use a hot asphalt liquid binder. With those thoughts and observations, I would suspect that the new asphalt will begin cracking and breaking away within a relatively very short time.
Cheap prick shouldve payed for it then 👍
Looks like homeowner went with the cheapest bid.
i do asphalt videos too! :)
I'm not sure what my life has become to be watching this
+Fergus Allan I was thinking the exact same thing. I need to read books or something.
Hahaha took words right out of my mouth
+Fergus Allan me 3, why did I just watch this? I wonder why they took the lightest guy on the crew and gave him the "shoe tamper" job. Should that not go to the heaviest guy?
+Fergus Allan It's a slow decline. Just embrace it.

Good job! Big up from Sweden, mates!
Excellent clean up also
I wasn't there, but it looks like cold mix. Always use tack! Way too much coarse aggregate in that mix.
Great looking finished product, but I too noticed large stone in mix and lack of tack.
Magnifico trabalho, parabéns!!!👏🇧🇷
i do asphalt videos too! :)
They used the old asphalt for the base after removing bad spots thats fine and standard operating procedure unless the homeowner wanted to pay for a complete tear out and start from scratch not necessary on that one! I did not see any tac coat applied to help bond the hot asphalt to the base however maybe they did . Nice job men!
Great job!
This kills me to watch. I work in highway maintenance on a main trunk road through Scotland doing all types of roadworks and especially resurfacing.. can't believe how bad they did this.
Indeed. What a ripoff!
The bobcat.should have.had a teeth bucket
Seems like a well oiled team. very professional. A pleasure to see that much dedication at work.
Looks great
In the uk we install concrete edging to give the tarmac/ashfault a neat edged finish. You should do same in America.
It is not specific to a country. The customer is given a choice an benefits of what they want to do.
I love that the guy who looks as if he is the elder statesman on the crew grabs hold of the slabs being torn up and tosses them into the bucket.
They have a bobcat and pull it up by hand
I'm shocked they didn't shovel from the truck into the paver lol. They made a day of it I guess
+Steve Vlietstra i wondered why they didn't do it in 2 pulls instead of making the noob shovel in 2 foot all the way down the drive. also why not use bobcst to pick up old asphalt, its what we do. also why not dump truck directly into hopper. thats what it is designed for
+Kuntry72 or pull a half a pass then a full
yeahh, I can't brain it...
What a bunch of dildos
Was surprised more of the original surface not removed and that there was now border edging added
Guys knew their trade, nice job
I've been a heavy equipment operator for 22 years and worked in asphalt for the last 7 of them. Kevin in the description is mostly on target. They did pretty nice job. It is nice to have 2 layers if you can, but you can get away with one in a small private driveway like yours. It is not going to see a lot of truck traffic, you aren't going to park a tank on it. It is fine. You can't tell how long they waited between the 2 layers at the end. If it wasn't at least a few hours, you really didn't get 2 layers. It's going to cool together as one layer which is not what you want but it's fine for a private driveway. I would have liked to see them put some tack down on the part they didn't tare out so the new stuff sticks to it a little better. The size of the roller was fine for the job, I would have like to have heard his vibrators coming on for at least one pass all the way across for better compaction.
you are completely dead on... and with out the tack that resurface isn't going to last
I noticed they need to stay off for 5 days, I remember driving on freshly surfaced country roads growing up, are those made differently to allow immediate use?
No. What they mean is don't park on it for 5 days. An asphalt roller works like a rolling pin. Spreading and stretching the asphalt into place. Driving your car on it has a similar but much lesser effect on it. You aren't helping much but as long as it has cooled and been compacted enough that you don't sink in it, you aren't hurting it. Parking is every different. You aren't smoothing and stretching, you are sitting in one spot smashing it. You can ruin that smooth surface and maybe leave indentations where your tires were
I agree tack and a bit more compaction bit non the less looks good
and to be completely fair to them Herminio, he may have just not filmed that part or maybe cut it when he edited because he didn't know it was any different than the static rolling
You guys work your butts off. I guess you have to to make a living doing asphalt driveway paving all year round. I have a great deal of respect for those that do physical labor every day. Those work boot attachments your crew uses to get up close to the home and garage door apron look like they work pretty well for compaction. :-) Never saw those before.

Roll/vibrate those hand joints you raked almost immediately just pinching them in, don’t step those in. Turn the burners on and let it heat up before taking off, the screed finally got hot 3/4 of the way through the driveway and tightened up the mat, no tack could make it slip where they turn into the driveway. We all do it a little differently though, finish looked good.
Great video. I video taped the excavation and back filling of our driveway and now this spring going to have it paved. I watched your video to get an idea of what to expect. Good job and thanks for sharing. Is the drive still in good shape? the reason I ask is because like you they will be paving over some old asphalt and I was wondering how that holds up. Only very seasoned experts use them
@@guymiller7795 always salt and pepper your experts 🤣
It's pretty standard practice where I'm at, my company and a few other bigger ones here will use them once in awhile, using them where they were on the edge of the driveway we would do, tamping with the shoes will help keep the heat in the asphalt until the roller hits it
Yes Tac coat should be used but its a straight driveway and doubt any large vehicles will be turning on it so I'm sure it'll be fine and won't break up.
that actually a really good work for a drive way what i mean is that this is the "expensive" way to make it, but they can't help it if they had already asphalte in it.
Great Job !
