Why Does Luxembourg Exist?
Why does the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg exist?
States like Luxembourg were the norm in Europe for hundreds of years but come the French Revolution and the advent of industrialization, tiny monarchical fiefdoms quickly fell out of fashion.
But Luxembourg survived to the present day - outlasting expansionists from all directions. Napoleonic France, the United Netherlands, revolutionary Belgium, and the Kingdom of Prussia all failed to incorporate Luxembourg in the long term. Defying the trends of their time, Luxembourgers asserted their own identity.

Hi from Lëtzebuerg🇱🇺
I'm so glad that youtube recommended your channel about 1 year and a half ago. Just wanted to say that I love your work!
Nice video
Looking forwards to Luxemburg being forced by Belgium to rename itself to East Luxemburg (North Macedonia and province of Macedonia pun)
and Moldova as West Moldavia :D
Luxembourg only exists because the Dutch king was grand duke pf Luxembourg. The Luxembourgish people wanted to join Belgium
First of all "Netherlands" should be "Northern Netherlands" ;)
@imwinningthisone7613 Well, and Belgium, South Netherlands, only exists because the great powers wanted it so, else Benelux was still the Netherlands. It is all about perspective. The big powers had a tactic that none of the other big powers had to become stronger, so the smaller nations were their toys. That is also why Europe has quite some countries and small countries too.
Interesting. Thanks. 🙌
nice video James
Hey thanks!
So Hungary isn’t the only country surrounded by its former borders… I am top comment
Hungolians like drama
Hun, Hungolians? 🧐
Because that's what happens when an opresive states wishes to stay back in the dark ages in modern times
@@rca4788 In the 19th century and pre WW1 Hungary's progressive attitude was the second in Europe, only shadowed by the Germans. Many modern invention came from that period from Hungarians. You should learn more real history, instead of listening to Western propaganda of today.
@@dantetre The apony laws , not giving rights to nonhungarians , forcing the Hungarian language in any aspect of social life , if that's progresive attitude then I m the emperor of china.
wonderful explanation!
Glad you think so!
Hey, great video! You need background music tho. Every time you take time to breathe, the silence is deafening.
From where I live (NL) Luxemburg is closer than Amsterdam. Been camping in Vianden, very nice surroundings as Castle.
New viewer here. You have a very interesting accent.

Luxembourgish is still intelligible to Germans near the Luxembourg border

Well, most of it IS now in Belgium. As the homonymous province.
4:36 77% can understand or Speak Luxembourgish, French is understood and spoken by 98% people it's safe to say Français is the Lingua Franca
98% of people can speak French cause we learn it in school, the only reason a higher percentage of people speak French is because of immigration into Luxembourg, and whilst French is used as the lingua franca in some communes, English is used in others, yet most still function with Luxembourgish at the helm.
Well yes, however the assumption that people who live there are predominently french spesking is wrong. This has to do with the fact people commute to work here and get by with only french. This inflates numbers of french speakers. Additionally everyone who went to school in luxembourg understands french, whereas commuters don't understand luxembourgish most of the time. Is french common? yes is it the language of the people? NO
8:11 I need this scene to be a movie

I like Luxembourgish it is a fun germanic language it reminds me of Limburgish another language that is neither Dutch nor German
@@GwainSagaFanChannel Depends on what you mean by german. One the one hand german can mean standard german, on the other hand it can mean continental west germanic.

as a dutchie i think that the south netherlands (belgium) is shite (friendly banter nutin srs). I do have respect for Luxembourg tho. The belgians left in a war supported by france and Luxembourg just left because there wasnt a king. Its like the american revolution compared to canada's independence
Tbh luxemburgish is more of a political reason to be its one language then for linguistic reasons. As a german I refuse to see it as a language like dutch. There is basically no difference between luxemburgish and the trevirian dialect. I mean by this definition you could make any dialect a language.
And any language a dialect
I refuse to see German as anything else than a dialect of Luxembourgish
