Linus has been teasing a micro-LED display for his new house that would have cost $100,000's and required a comical amount of power and cooling. To convince him otherwise, today we demo Epson's latest $5000 projector that promises to compete with projectors multiple times the price, the LS-12000.

Espon projectors have never been a really good value you can also buy native 4K projectors which epson mostly does not make. In practice you won't care about black levels too much because epson dynamic contrast is really good

    • Reminds me of when I was an apprentice electrician for an electrical construction company years ago. Anytime there wasn't enough work for everybody, the boss would send the extra guys to work on his house. He wanted to be able to pay everyone for full time, even when business was slow. He was a good guy. His house was big, but by no means a mansion. Maybe 3,500 - 5,000 square feet. I think he spent a lot of time just thinking up shit for us to do to his house. He had 3 big electrical panels, plus a backup panel for his backup generator. He built a shed in the backyard with a 200 Amp service panel in it (200A service is what most new single family homes have here in the US). The shed had an overhead garage door. His front hallway had a chandelier with a motor to lower it to the ground for cleaning. The attic had lights and power receptacles throughout the whole thing. He had ethernet and HDMI cables going to each room. Speaker systems throughout the house. Camera system. He had outdoor storage sheds with water-tight lighting and power receptacles. Outdoor ground lights going along paths around the whole house. Undercabinet lighting everywhere. Intercom systems. Central vacuum. It was insane.

I game on it all the time. We also bought 6 big, comfy theatre chairs(full recliner). The room has 2.1 hdmi splitter, my 4k movie/tv collection has been ripped, and now I have one project left, and that’s making everything on my media pc accessible by an android tablet (which isn’t a huge job, just haven’t gotten to it yet, the room is new).

  • Just be ready for the brightness to drop, and the colour to change over time. We've got Epson laser projectors at work, and it's quite noticeable - especially if you've got a new one next to it to compare to.

    @keithduthie@keithduthie2 жыл бұрын
    • Which models? And what kind of usage? And is it running at max brightness? Something isn't right if they're newer. You should be getting 10-15 thousand hours with maybe a 20-25% brightness drop. It's then supposed to drop off more quickly as it hits 20,000 hours. Something like 50% brightness at that point.

      @ryankramer@ryankramer2 жыл бұрын
    • Fairly heavy use, probably not at max brightness (but I won't guarantee someone didn't set it up stupidly), and it's most noticeable with the oldest ones we have (probably EB-L1755UNL, unless those ones are an older model). It's mostly annoying because we have a pair side by side in a couple of rooms, which means that you can't necessarily just replace _one_ if it has a fault. Especially with the colour shifting over time.

      @keithduthie@keithduthie2 жыл бұрын
    • Big difference between models though, although both laser with 3LCD there is a big difference in brightness (15000 vs 2700 lm) and application. Plus the L1755 has mad Color calibration functions built-in with camera assistance.

    • Exactly. If you are just throwing up a projector on a room(or outside) temporarily then all those features help get you a decent picture quick but for a dedicated theater room it would serve you well to do the math and find the correct spot. Ideally you want to never use the keystone adjustment options and a minimal amount of zoom to zero in the picture to the screen It’s also not just pixel loss or brightness loss. Keystone correction also requires image processing by the projector which means it increase input lag. Not a big deal for watching movies but if you are gaming on the projector is can be noticeable

    @vinzzbe@vinzzbe2 жыл бұрын
  • This new Epson really is pretty groundbreaking, the tech is fancy and has been around in the higher end enthusiast and commercial space for a while now, but the price point is where it shines. This is the first projector of its class, that truly encompasses everything (aside from 3D and tonemapping support, which is a shame on the latter but not a deal breaker) at a price point that challenges not only other projectors, specifically laser projectors and the ultra high end of the remaining lamp projector lineups, but also the elevated premium lineup of TVs. Projectors are never going to overtake TVs purely because it's an enthusiast product, you have to put a lot more time, effort and research into a projector comparative to a relatively simple TV market (it's not simple, but for the majority of consumers and premium purchasers, it's greatly simplified by what's on the shelf and what looks best at the time, unfortunately a lot of consumers just don't put much research into their purchases). But this might be the start of at least somewhat of an increased shift, or perhaps just a consolidation, of the existing Projector Market to better serve consumers. The downsides of a projector are starting the thin out, the primary reasons consumers don't buy into them is a mixture of complexity and price, Projectors today compared to 10 years ago on both fronts have greatly improved. Will be interesting to see where the market is in the next 10 years, especially as more of these market leading features become commonplace at genuinely affordable* prices (affordable for the enthusiast market, ofc these projectors will never be at a price point where the typical $500 TV purchaser will have use of them, there's just not a large enough economy of scale in the projector market to make that happen).
