Yes. Unfortunately the imperial family forced the prince to not chose the woman he loved as his wife therefore she became a side consort (it was a slightly higher rank that a simple concubine however it was still a sad situation for the lovers). Also the fact that the legal wife herself wasn't in love with the prince and was chosen randomly by him it makes the situation even more sad for all 3 people (the prince, the legal wife and the side consort).

Sure her father had an official position in court and it give their family a certain status in high society but it was still not strong enough. And another reason why the imperial family was against it's because the old empress hated her family. Female lead Ning had a strong personality and didn't allow the empress to walk all over her and from there the old empress hated the Jiang family. And since the side consort it's from Jiang family you can imagine the rest.
