This makes me feel better. I directed my first film at film school couple weeks ago and I was so nervous. Even though everyone tells me I’m good at it and love directing, I have doubts. Hearing that Spielberg does too makes me feel better. I think it’s part of being a creative.

8:01 Spielberg saw the future. Independent filmmaking is making a big comeback, budgets for studio films are becoming exponential and ludicrous. Honestly, its not hard to imagine these big movie studios becoming obsolete in the next decade or so, as streaming services grow more and more accessible.
Hell, even in the early 90's the independent scene came into the mainstream. You had Tarantino with Reservoir Dogs, Rodriguez with El Mariachi, and Soderbergh with Sex, Lies, and Videotape. The little guy will always have a chance. The method is simple. Make damn good movies, and people will watch, spread the word, and start your career.

I never said my favourite film was a Spielberg film, in fact, none of my top 5 are even Spielberg films. This is based purely on Longevity in the industry, influence, success and awards.
E.T. was such a touching movie. When it came out my little son was only about 8 months old, He sat in my lap all three times we went to see it and never made a sound because he was so immersed in the movie, can't tell you how wonderful and amazing your movies are.
E.T. was the highest grossing film of all time then, and the next year he released the new highest grossing film of all time, Jurassic Park. That's an honor him and James Cameron share, having the 2 highest grossing films of all time at the same time.
One thing that astonishes me most every time I see a Spielberg interview is how nice and calm this man is. With his warm and comforting voice, if you didn‘t know who he was you would take him for your nice Uncle Steven who is a teacher in your local high school and whom you could aks to watch over your kids for the weekend. The kids would love it, and you would have no doubt that they are in perfect hands. But knowing that he is the most successful movie director in history, you can at the same time perfectly imagine that Spielberg is a top professional and can kick some a*s if need be. Really interesting person.
Insightful interview. Spielberg is a master filmmaker. The number of genres he's worked successfully within is amazing, really. There aren't many who come close to this standard.

Steven in his mind doesn't make art. He makes life. He projects our lives on screen and all our experiences and fantasies are visualized along with incredible storytelling and character development. Seeing it on screen makes it come alive in ways that are familiar but also unique and curious. This is why Spielberg has been so amazing in his career and has been one of the greatest contributors to not only film but to humanity.

The world won't have the same magic when Spielberg passes on.
To be honest, his movies really haven't had the same magic really since the turn of the century. To me, Saving Private Ryan was his last truly great film. I'm not saying he hasn't put out quality pictures, but they have become movies that could have been made by any director. I personally like his movies that depict historical events like Bridge of Spies than his fantasy tales (BFG was a snoozefest). Lincoln was overrated and a HUGE disappointment, and don't get me started on that Indiana Jones movie. It should have stopped after Last Crusade.
He predicted exactly what would happen to Hollywood. We need a creative revolution in Africa and the film industry in Nigeria

This is 3 years after I visited Universal on that same tour train thing as a wide eyed 14 year old kid from London dreaming of growing up and being like Spielberg. If I’d seen him like these people did at 4:10 just strolling by and saying hello as we passed by I think I would have thought I was dreaming.

I have this segment on video...theres about 5 min edited out...."Hook" was nearly finished...so, he was already working on "Jurassic Park" with "Schindler's List" a year away....he never stops making films....
How things have changed. A lot of the younger people (teens, young adults) don't even know his name but they are into all the movies that exist because their directors were inspired by his and George Lucas's work. "Ready Player One" would be one of the biggest hits if it would have come out in 1992.

SeaBass SeaBass cool fact about his involvement with back to the future as a producer it was Robert Zemeckis who directed it and wrote it along with Bob Gale but anyway Spielberg was the only one in Hollywood who believed in it nobody wanted to make it and he saw the potential and quality of the script and he convinced universal studios to buy it and green light the movie and thus the movie was born
What is so great about Spielberg is that his movies have a mass and Universal appeal. That is the main reason he should be considered one of the greatest. It is so easy to take him for granted but his films stand out even though they are full-on entertainment. People who think art solely constitutes to making intellectually complex films that appeal to a selected few and others as popcorn entertainment are off the mark. Spielberg has that magic to make art but disguise that with something that engages with anyone worldwide. That should never be overlooked.

Spielberg as of the date of this comment has six films on the National Film Registry as a director (Jaws, Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan) four of them were released before this interview. Art therefore can be riding on a bike with ET, or watching Indy being chased by a huge boulder. Also it should be pointed out that sometimes trying to make a piece of art can be damaging in itself. Look no further than The Lion King and Pocahontas. Pocahontas was the prestige pic and The Lion King was the risk. The risk paid off

@@adnamahad5196 He's definitely made great movies, but he's become just another director/producer. I think his last truly great film was Saving Private Ryan. Since then they've been mostly...meh. I think Spielberg is a great director but so is Martin Scorsese, and Ridley Scott, and James Cameron. Plus let's not forget the directors who inspired Spielberg like Frank Capra, and Cecile B. Demille and Alfred Hitchcock. Without them, there never would have been a Steven Spielberg.

In the old times they would get a great production with a great director, actors and script and complement with some technology. Today it is 80% technology with a lot of bullshit and a horrible production, direction and scrip writing in most of the movies. People seem to forget about the quality.
