Al Pacino Can't Relax At Boat Party | Donnie Brasco (1997) | Now Playing
The incredible thing about watching this movie is watching and feeling for Lefty, and never once even thinking of Michael Corleone.
This scene sums up the whole movie perfectly. For all his 26 hits, Lefty is - and will always be - just a ‘Button Guy’. Always the Bridesmaid never the Bride. Whereas Donnie rises to the direct detriment of Lefty without even trying. Did you notice how when Sonny Black introduced Donnie to Trafficante he referred to him as “A friend of ours” and not “A friend of mine”? Donnie effectively got made by Sonny Black on that boat trip. Plus even when Donnie tried to stay loyal to Lefty, Sonny Black simply stated “You belong to me (i.e. and no longer Lefty) now.” And the atmospheric music brilliantly adds to the sense of sadness, that for all Lefty was or wanted to be, he was ultimately just a loser hitman who had to continually ponce off of Donnie as he barely owned the shirt on his back.
And why is that? Because he doesn't make enough money? Seems like you understand the movie better than me, I only saw it once two decades ago.
@@Zodroo_Tint He didn't. He was a weak earner. There's dues every week and he was smacking parking meters to try to raise the cash. He was desperate and aging out of the game. He didn't have real solid hustles that were turn key and profitable like smuggling cigarettes or shaking down labor unions or any of the back Gambino styled cons.
Agreed he was just a loser killer.
@@Zodroo_TintIn reality, Lefty was a degenerate gambler. He was a enforcer forever but due to his addiction and his debts, he only got made in the late 70's.
@@jvinicius_ also in reality it was actually Sonny Black who paid for Donnie being an agent. They sort of mixed the two characters together to make Lefty more tragic in the movie but in real life Lefty apparently believed it when it came out who Donnie was, whereas Sonny didn’t want to believe it and was the one who got whacked over it. The scene where Lefty leaves all his belongings at the end even actually happened with Sonny, not Lefty.
When he said, "Just so you know," sounded just like Tony Montana.
I was thinking the exact same thing! Even though he plays a powerful character here (and in many other films) in that moment, it's hard to imagine him sitting down sulking in the boat compared to the defiant Tony Montana character when you hear that voice!
Go no further Frank
Pacino is great in this scene, I can’t even look at him.
Such a great film with compelling character. Al Pacino played this one beautifully
That "King Court" match box was Sonny Black's way of telling Lefty he knows about the nightclub they wanted to keep secret from him! I finally realized what it meant....
Well I really don’t no what lefty was thinking Sonny was a captain pretty much his boss the fact that lefty try too keep that from him could of got him killed
Yeah but I wonder how Sonny black found out about kings court I don’t even think it explains it in the movie smh .
wow, cant anything past you
@@pugsly4489 He is a Sharp one .. lol
With all the movies Pacino has been in, in my opinion, this was his best performance.
When he said "go to the BOW", I stood up and started going
Lmao

Let’s give kudos to Johnny Depp and Al Pacino for their outstanding performances. They became their characters; without any phoniness. This is a must-watch film. 🎥
I think I would go insane standing on a boat in the Florida sun, wearing a suit while listening to Blondie. Might as well be the Sahara in a fur coat, also listening to Blondie.
People in the 70s really knew how to party, I wish I was on that boat. Today everyone would just be staring at their phone doing nothing. I'm just a love machine!🕺
I was on a beach In Florida 30 years ago, everyone talking, eating drinking and laughing even some playing poker…..and swimming… I was on a beach In Florida last week…….I seen introverts whom in 20 years will need neck braces all hunched over trying to OUT-Instagram each other on those phones….. I’ll be on a beach in Florida in 30 years….not a cellular to be seen everyone will have brain implants to multiplex each other 5 feet away….
.....maybe at your parties.....
This was the 80s
u sound like a dude who never left his mothers basement in his life, and never been on a party in his life
@@davidkruse4030 This takes place in 1978. You probably wouldn't be seeing guys wearing leisure suits and dancing to disco at yacht party in the 80s.
Some of his best work in this role.
"Just so you Know" 🤣
Joe Pistone cameo at the end there
Start too, thats him doing the introductions
Mob guy behind Traficante in the hat.
I knew it was him when I heard his voice.
One has to remember that the real-life Lefty was only recently made a soldier by the time he met Joseph Pistone aka Donnie Brasco. Despite his long record as a "button man," he was a compulsive gambler who had large debts and this resulted in a delay of "opening the books." One of the conditions of being made in the Mafia was that one does not owe anyone large amounts of money.
That's the real Donnie Brasco behind Lefty at 0:49.
Wow, didn't know that.
Former FBI agent Joseph Pistone aka Donnie Brasco
Loool, I knew he seemed familiar, but never recognized it was him))
I’m not sure it is he looks taller
Lefty gave me advice on my tropical fishes diseases he had a great deal of knowledge on breeding fish and was a good guy , he loved his fish tanks
Wow! AP did a great job acting I actually felt sorry for him
Me too. So sad.
There is no actor in the history of Hollywood _ that can play a gangster better than mr. Al Pacino.
Joe Pesci
James gandolfini
Pacino in one movie can play a Don and another movie can play about as low of a made guy as you can get.
Robert Deniro..
Love Ya Al a true Master talent and Humanity ❤️
Al Pacino is just such an awesome actor...
one of my favorite movies
Michael Madsen was a great Sonny Black. I wouldn't want to be within ten blocks of a guy like that.
I GOTTA ANSWER!
Reservoir Dogs, Donnie Brasco and Kill Bill Volume 2 are the absolute peaks of Madsen's acting career.
Frankly, I think most of the credit for Madsen's performance in Reservoir Dogs goes the the director. That one shockingly brutal scene he was in is sort of a Tarantino signature.@@joemckim1183

The real Donnie Brasco was an extra in that scene, he was the guy in the white hat and shirt.
Correct..The man directly behind traficante when lefty first meets traficante..good eye

people who don't know acting, will never appreciate the nuance of Al Pacino in this role... amazing amazing work... that guy is probably the best of all time, better than Daniel day lewis
Pacino pulled Scent of a woman, Carlito's way, Heat and Donnie Brasco in how? 5 years? What a beast
One of a few, if not the only, roles I respect him in after his great 1970's run, before he started being parody Al Pacino. That "Just so you know..." was so perfect. 3:08 A poor, dumb, hurting shmuck.
@@sgt.thundercok4704 not sure why he gets called a parody. I can't think of a single actor who can't be accused of parodying themselves simply for getting older and inability to switch souls to another body. he parodied himself once in jack and Jill, and that was an actual parody, but the guy is always fun and captivating.

2:33 i have always loved the way the girl dances and picks her leg on cue. Very beautiful 💃
Conveniently moving that guy's hand off her butt in the process. Smooth.
Me too. Some smoke show extras in this scene.
What makes this great is that Joe was such a great undercover agent that they believed his backstory that he was indeed from Florida. Hence why he was given the responsibility in Florida.
The best Al Pacino films are Serpico Scarface Carlito's Way and Heat and The Irishman and Godfather 1 and Godfather 2
Acting aside fun fact All the top mob actors are beloved in most establishments and according to Bruno Kirby (RIP) who played Clemenza in GF2 they are given free food at delis and restaurants
3:06 It has that "Watch your back? Better than watching your front!" vibe about it.

He was a big boss in real life just as powerful as anyone in New York they say he was involved in the jfk assassination him an the New Orleans boss
"Go to da BOWWW"
Wow watched it yesterday for probably the 30th time great movie and cast. Sonny Red just looked evil.
We got to make our own move 😮
What acting by Pacino, forget about it
What the hell made Lefty think that a big boss like Trafficante would just deal and talk with him Lefty was just a soldier which bosses don’t even talk too so he was mad for nothing
Bosses talk to all made men he wasn’t going to respect him as much as a captain but lefty was known through all the burrows 😆
0:18 Fun fact : The "Left Hand" is an FBI boat that was used in another federal sting before the Donnie Brasco operation, and it ended up on the cover of Newsweek because of a leak 😂😂 Right after that boat party, Lefty and Pistone were eating a bit in Miami, and Lefty noticed that cover of Newsweek and confronted Pistone who eventually managed to BS his way out of it, so the bosses were never informed, but that was a close one. 0:47 and that's the real Joe Pistone just behind Al Pacino.
I think lefty knew beat that point but couldn’t prove it
Well, this is in the movie. There is a scene when he (Lefty) confronts him (Pistone).
When your idea at work gets stolen.
hearing that you belong to me now is like Your over here now.
As a former crook I would rather do my own thing the mafia was basically like paying to be a crook with so called protection that could probably end up more dangerous than being on your own

Anybody notice the gas prices at the marina?
The real Donnie Brasco was in this scene.
Nice little clip that showcases why this was such a disappointing movie. To get it made Pacino’s star power was needed. Knowing the story Pacino naturally wanted the role of Sonny Black. In the book Sonny is far more important than Lefty. But the studio argued that Pacino just wasn’t believable as Sonny. Eventually Pacino agrees to take the role of Lefty….. in exchange for a greater plot focus on Lefty. A Lefty cast as the Mob’s version of Willy Loman. The book makes clear what sympathy Agent Pistone has is for the fate of Sonny, not Lefty.
I remember from reading the book, that was indeed the case. I noticed when I saw the film how they showed Pistone bonding with Lefty, instead of Sonny. Still, it was a solid film. Pistone accomplished something that was amazing.
@@Clonetrooper1139 But the really impressive feat is getting to Sonny’s level. That’s basically the point of the entire enterprise. And to emphasize how they want the audience to focus on the Brasco-Lefty relationship and not Sonny, Madsen’s Sonny is portrayed as a jerk not worth our time. In truth not only is Sonny 15-20 IQ points smarter than Lefty he’s also more interesting and given the context of the mob life, thoughtful and sensitive. Readers wonder if Sonny spent some time before going willingly to *his* doom caring for his pigeons.
Lefty is a much bigger role in this movie, why would he play Sonny just because he's a higher ranked member? Pacino has already played a Mafia Don in 3 movies so him playing a top tier mafia guy isn't in doubt, he proves he can also play one of the lower knockaround type of guys.
Because Lefty wasn't the guy that bonded with the FBI agent it was Sonny Black. Sonny Black is also the one that got whacked because of it, but I agree with you that Pacino was fantastic in a different role for him
@@donaldshotts4429 OH I didn't know the real story was that much different.
Santo is my great uncle. A good man. May he rest in peace.
One of the dumbest facts of this movie is they didnt change the name of the ship... watched this scene with total disdain.
Fogettabowit. Sit at the bow. Pacino guided Donnie. He did not actually make him. He became misguided in the end. To forget about it means opinions are thrown to the side. It is actually, in a way, pragmatism. I could see Pacino's character in a place where he desires to leave the life. So Donnie actually set Pacino up. If he succeeded he would become a free man.
Thy treated donnie like that girl you pass around. Look at that, he broke leftys heart. Your with me now honey
This scene feels so pathetic and sad
Sad? How? Because a known hitman got his massive ego checked?
Good movie but the score made me feel like I was watching Matilda
😂. Got to appreciate the classics. I'm sure if Scorsese directed this movie the score would have been amazing.
You belong We belong They belong
One of the few parts, after 1980 or so, that I think Pacino actually acts, instead of playing that same kinda guy he did in so many.
He’s still a button man for the mob haha, not far away from “the same kinda guy”. You could say it’s the typecast he’s known for with the twist of being low on the totem pole. But still agree, he’s actually acting and really well in this movie, you believe he’s the character instead of just Al Pacino on screen playing X or Y that’s ultimately less important than it being Al Pacino.
Blows my mind that the real Donnie Brasco (Joe Pistone) was in this scene (guy in the white polo shirt and tan fedora).
The mob was never going to touch him the fbi made it clear if they did they would take the gloves off an fuck them up foreal
The problem with Lefty is that he kissed ass to the big Boss. The big boss could feel it and lost respect for him. You remind me of Mickey Mantell come on now.
💫💫💫💫💫💫💫
Do you like turtles ?
Am i wrong in thinking Sonny introduces Donnie incorrectly by saying "he's a friend of ours." Donnie was never made therefor the intro is incorrect. Thoughts?
I think he effectively made Donnie in that scene. It was no mistake. A guy like Sonny Black would never make a gaffe like that. Especially to an old Don like Santo Trafficante.
I get what you are saying but he would have never done this in real life. Sonny cannot make someone on a whim (there is a lot of procedures involved before a ceremony happens) and you would never intro someone as a made guy to a boss especially
@@Clonetrooper1139You think wrong.

Terrible score here
This is one of my favorite movies but, in scene after scene, the score is excruciatingly bad. For instance, in one of the film's final scenes, when Donnie and Lefty are dispatched to do a hit on a boat (but the FBI shows up first), the score is just profoundly awful.
Dirty Rat!
This whole scene is just so out of touch with reality.. From the mean streets of 1970's NYC to an oversized yacht in sunny Florida.. An 85 year old man in a hot-tub with girls young enough to be his great granddaughters.. Somebody in that gang should've known this was not reality but they were living like a bunch of teenagers on spring break.. Lefty getting crushed when he realized it all had nothing to do with him was kind of sad though, he was the only gangster who was given a dose of reality that day..
Not of friend of ours. He wasn’t made. Should have been a friend of mine. A good movie but not a lot of actual events.
