Who hasn't heard of the PLM line? This line, which is more than famous in France, put into service between 1847 and 1855, connects the three largest cities, namely Paris, Lyon and Marseille. It is still called the "Imperial Artery", it was the main line of the mythical Le Mistral train, and was used in 1954 to set the first rail speed record.
863 km long, it is electrified at 1500 volts DC, and is complimented by the high-speed line in its entirety. Today, there is no longer a train linking Paris to Marseille directly via this historic route.
It is between Marseille and Lyon along the Rhone Valley that we will cover the route in this new video. On this beautiful summer day, you can admire the beauty of this line bordering the left bank of the Rhône, after leaving the beautiful city of Marseille, and crossing the city of the popes.

  • The Main line! I hope u can make a cabride via Dijon from Lyon to Paris or the beautiful line Lyon-Geneva. i saw a lot of nuclear plants close to Rodano river. Line crosses all places full of history: Avignon, Orange, Valence and Vienne. There's also Grezan-Givors line on the right side of Rodano, a freight line only, now reopened to passenger trains on the other side of the river. Should be interesting seeing a cabride. Thank u

  • I'm astonished to learn that this route is still electrified at 1500v DC; I thought all major lines in France had been converted to 25kV AC many years ago. It seems odd that such an important (and long) route should still be working under such an old-fashioned electrical system as the DC.

    • Nope a standard Intercity train.160kph is the standard speed in many line in France. Some sections are at 200kph and from 1964.

  • Merci bien de la tres belle video qui me rappelle les voyages de ma jeunesse. Maintenant, pour aller a Marseille on est oblige de prendre le TGV qui suit un tout autre parcours. Dommage poour toutes ces gares fermees, est-ce que la SNCF ne pourrait pas en rouvrir quelques unes?

  • Encore un très beau parcours en France. La Team France veut pas venir en Auvergne a Clermont-Ferrand. Je leur prête volontiers ma cabine pour filmer des lignes en sursis comme Clermont-Ferrand/Le Puy en Velay ou Clermont/Montluçon....

  • "L'imperiale" de la PLM....la PLM qui n'aimait pas l'électricité....Alors que PO et midi électrifiaient dès les années 20,PLM ne le sera qu'a partir des années 50. Pourtant dès le début des années 30 tout était prêt pour le faire ,sauf l'avis de la compagnie. Et en plus! la ligne est passée a 2 doigts d'être en Monophasé (25kV). Pourtant elle ne faisait pas souvent les choses a moitié ,par exemple le doublement de l'impériale sur deux troncons. De Villeneuve-st-George a Montereau (la branche Melun et la branche Corbeil Essonnes Melun du RER D et son pendant sur la R)et Lyon-Avignon,la ligne est doublée,une rive droite et une rive gauche.

    • Initialement, cela servait pour les TGV Paris-Marseille avant que la LGV Méditerranée soit construite. Aujourd'hui; sur les sections non circulées par les TGV, tout est mis au vert clignotant, car les TER ne sont pas aptes à rouler à 200 km/h.

  • Even if there is a passenger train between Lyon and Marseille on this "classic" line, I'm not sure anybody would really want to ride it given the OuiGo TGV service that links Paris, Lyon and Marseille.

  • Nice but rail France infraftructure it looks very run down example stations, closed stations, over grown sidings, & closed lines they should take a good look at Swiss rail.😞
