Unpacking is a lo fi Australian puzzle game that tells the story of our character through the items she unpacks at various stages of her life.
It is available through Steam and is currently on Xbox Game Pass.

  • the main character in this game is a disabled lgbt jewish woman and they also make sure to note that her partner at the end is asian with her rice cooker, dumpling steamers and what appears to be traditional red and gold chinese items in their room, and her friend form uni is a muslim woman. so much hidden representation in such a beautiful and emotional game.

  • One little detail that I loved about the game is that our character starts out packing really haphazardly. Some things needing to be brought into another room after being unpacked. But the way her girlfriend packs is neat and efficient. When they move in together in the new house, our character's boxes are a lot less chaotic, probably due to her girlfriend's either influence, or supervision lmao

  • The baby hasn't been born yet as of the unpacking of the final house -- if you finish the unpacking in the nursery, the caption will indicate that she and her partner are 'looking forward to meeting' the baby. We can be sure that it's one or the other of them having the baby (rather than, say, adopting) by the baby books, one of which is clearly 'What to Expect When You're Expecting,' which is all about the effects of pregnancy and how to cope with them. The miniatures and a painting in the roommate apartment indicate the characters she and her roommates have in their RPG campaign, including the protagonist's bard and a beetle-riding warrior. The Muslim roommate's archer also has a headscarf. One of the roommates (probably the man, given his beetle-riding character) is evidently raising a stick insect at the time she moves in, and by the time she moves into her boyfriend's place, she has a beetle of her own. This survives to her return to her family home, but by the time she has her own apartment, it is gone and she has a painting of a beetle with a halo over it, indicating it has probably died by then. The Muslim roommate appears to be a cosplayer, given the incomplete Sailor Venus costume on a dress form in the living room, and the dummy heads elsewhere, one of which has a wig. The protagonist's girlfriend appears to have a passion for gardening, bringing a selection of tabletop houseplants (mostly succulents) with her, along with some potting soil and other gardening tools. She also has an award of some sort of her own, so she's accomplished in her own right.

  • The game manages to accomplish a pretty complex story in such a simple way. Her art and characters for her book going back for years as she developed them, her gaining new interests from her roommates (ie the stag beetle she has afterwards), the progression of her medical issues shown through the medication, cane, and brace. You can see her being proud of her Jewish culture as a child, having it hidden away for a few years, and then being reembraced when she moves in on her own. And the simple yet emotional design of the boyfriend’s apartment, you as the player genuinely struggling to find space for your items, her colorful and fun possessions clashing with his very sleek and simple apartment, her having no room for her art supplies and having to work at the kitchen or couch for her art, and the sadness you feel when you realize the ONLY place you can fit your diploma is hidden away under the bed or in the closet. It hits so many points so well and in such a gorgeous and simple manner, genuinely one of my favorite games to date.

  • I love all the tiny details the game provides, but maaannnnnn, the sinking feeling I got in my chest when I realized there was NOWHERE to put the diploma other than to stuff it under the bed in the boyfriend's apartment. And as someone who keeps my collection of canes in the umbrella stand, I initially put her cane there as a sort of 'haha, me' moment, and considering how persnickety the game can be about where some things are or aren't allowed to go, I had the most unattractive laugh when it turned out the umbrella stand was, in fact, where the cane was supposed to go. I agree with what a couple other people have said about her getting hurt while rock climbing. The game makes it pretty clear that when she finds a hobby, she takes it with both hands and holds onto it, so for her to have what seems to be a back injury and for rock climbing to be the only hobby to conspicuously disappear seems like too big of a coincidence.

All through the story she has cheap, plastic hangers that don’t match and actively clash with the bf’s who has an expensive wooden set. You don’t deal with her clothes in the parent’s house, but when she moves into her own apartment you can see she actually took some of his! And by the end she has gotten rid of the plastic ones and invested in wooden ones of her own :) Edit: Upon further inspection she also took one of his kitchen towels and the little metal trinket he had on his nightstand

Just like the character in the game, I went to uni, broke up with my boyfriend, started a relationship with my now girlfriend and developed long term health issues (Fibromyalgia) - Over time my own house has seen more pills, a cane and a wrist brace just like the game. • A theory my brother and I has as we played through was that the first room wasn't a new house for the family, but the sisters moving in with the grandparents after the loss of their parents. The sewing room just felt 'grandparent-ish' for my brother and I. Though we suspected the cane was not due to an injury the MC suffered, but rather was on hand for visiting grandparents. The theory my brother and I had was very off the mark and likely wrong, but it was still a special experience to come to that point together as we played.

  • I personally believe the MC not just visited the UK but actually lives there. You can pick it up throughout the story with smaller hints, the London Bus could be a souvenir from a trip to the capital. The fact the other mementos are European seem to indicate that she at least lives in the continent, unless she’s taking expensive global trips. The use of ‘Uni’ for the student accommodation instead of the more American ‘College’ is also a subtle hint. Plus, the prominence of not only a kettle but an electric one being used shows that she is most likely from the UK, as Americans tend to (shudder) heat water up in a microwave or use a stove kettle as their power supply is weaker and so electric kettles are less effective at heating up water. Obviously this could also suggest she lives in a European country instead, but i’m not as familiar with them so can only see the hints towards a British MC

    @alysecat812@alysecat8122 жыл бұрын
    • We say Uni in Australia as well and we have electric kettles. The power point in the student dorm room is also the same as Australia. Europe is a pretty popular travel destination for us, particularly London. Plus the game was produced in conjunction with the Queensland Government and the creative lead has said it was all based in Brisbane.

      @EvenBadWolvesGaming@EvenBadWolvesGaming2 жыл бұрын
    • tbh as an American, electric kettles are not as *un*common as some in the UK might believe, especially among younger folks. The discrepancy mostly has to do with the fact that we drink far less tea (excluding myself here; I'm East Asian and have a water boiler with 24/7 hot water✌️). Regardless of geography, I can't imagine a character with non-electric coffee gadgets like a French press resorting to the barbarism of a microwave, so a kettle makes sense.

  • Considering how the pain medication shows up mainly after she moves back into her parents house, I kind of wonder if that's the reason why they broke up? I mean judging by how she has to hide her degree, and the stark contrast between her weights and his much larger ones, or her small toothbrush vs his big electric one, it's pretty apparent that it's a metaphor for how he most likely made her feel small. So all things considered, it seems in character for him to dump her after she presumably suffered a rock climbing injury that left her disabled. I imagine that her suffering the injury meant that she needed more support to cope with her condition, and he probably viewed her as too "high maintenance" because of it, and kicked her out. Alternatively, and this one is more of a stretch. Maybe instead of dumping her for it, he ended up cheating on her once she got the injury, because in her mind she was less attractive or something because of it. And then when she found out, he threw her out the house. My only evidence for that one being the fact that the pin goes directly through his face if you try to hang the picture of her and her ex up on the corkboard, suggesting it was a bad breakup.

  • The signs of chronic pain/disability are interesting. Of course disabilities can remain dormant and appear later in adulthood but as someone who also works in food service I think it’s also possible that it’s an injury from her days as a barista. Standing for long hours (you have to be full time to make any semblance of a living wage plus picking up overtime), lifting heavy boxes incorrectly, not reminding yourself to check your posture, suffering a fall on the job, all of those things can lead to chronic pain even within just a few years.

I hope the add more chapters one day maybe of them decorating their son/daughter's room or getting a family pet and having to put that stuff somewhere or getting a slightly bigger house with four bedrooms and seeing them retire together to a nice cottage that would be really cute. I loved the MCs career developing over the course of the story. • This game is the only game so far to make me cry, the good times, the bad times, the Greatest times, Unpacking is the only game I’ve ever played to make me cry. The way the pig plushie comes full circle, from the MC as a child to the MC, and her Parter’s child. The way it shows how time flies and not to take it for granted, to the underlying messages of declining health and abusive relationship (with the MC’s ex boyfriend) and possible resentment towards her family for not accepting her for who she is as there’s no new family photos after the MC starts dating someone of the same gender. The way she still kept the dog poster hidden as if she thought it childish and would be embarrassed if her friends saw it (that’s my theory for why it’s in a cupboard at least). The way our most cherished belongings can be seen as childish, stupid or humiliating as kids, when “friends” see them. I know I may be reading way too much into this but no matter what this game is one of my undisputed favorite pieces of art ever curated.

Like it felt like deep down he didn’t want her there. Or it was a way of controlling her life in a small way, idk if that’s a bit much but dude. Her friends made her feel welcomed even tho the place was crowded it wasn’t impossible to find space and it felt like a home. The fancy apartment feels like styles are clashing, nothing matches, and they don’t have much in common. Then the next level where you move back home i burst into tears, bc even tho I was upset and I kinda knew their relationship wouldn’t last it still hurt. Bc I still had hope that somehow it could work, I didn’t want her heart to be broken. I had the photos all hung on the cork board but the one with her bf was red. When I hid it away in the dresser I got jumpscared by the completion sound.

I was a kid in the 90's, was a bit of a tomboy but now slightly more feminine, I've always made art, I went to UNI for an animation degree, I suffer health issues and need a wrist brace, I had a bad relationship (a few actually) that didn't work out, I'm a bit of a nerd, and my art/animation career is lifting off the ground. It makes me cry to play this game because it feels so close to my heart. And the comfort of moving back into your childhood home in the middle while you figure stuff out hit me hard. I also really appreciate the representation of her having a girlfriend and starting a family with her. I find it really sweet that so many people can play this and feel comfort from it. I really want to play more story lines and I hope the developers make more! I'd love to help make it haha

  • When the main character moves into their first partners house, there is alternative dialogue when you finish unpacking. “Feels so serious moving into his place!”

  • I’ve been watching gameplay of this game for a while now, but only played it myself for the first time about a week ago. I’m a disabled, jewish, female, lesbian, artist, with two parents and a sister, with an a sentimental side for my belongings, who loves to travel. This was the most representation of myself I’ve ever seen in a video hame, and we don’t even see the protag except in a still image of her back in the end.

  • Honestly, the moment I found out she was bi I shouted "heck yeah!" It felt so nice to be included in media presentation, and as an bi Asian myself I really loved seeing girls from different cultures falling in love and staying together

    • Also the moment I saw there were ZERO condiments, only coffee and protein powder in her ex's place, I knew they weren't gonna last. Dating someone pretentious who doesn't cook and doesn't know how to take care of their partner is never a good decision

    • @@bashtar I just knew from how crammed and alienating the apartment was that they wouldn't be happy together. It's amazing how such subtle queues generated an idea in my mind. Isn't art just neat?

  • this game is not in my wheelhouse at all but it was surprisingly therapeutic and really satisfying to meticulously organize every detail and watch a replay at the end. i wasn't quite understanding the story but this video sums it up great. i like how much of a story this game tells with hardly any words.

  • I love finding all the tiny details in this game - from the stitched-up pig to the dish towel stolen from the ex boyfriend to the mixed box companies (from past moves of the main character and her partner) for the final move to the new house. so much effort was put into maintaining these storylines!

  • I am pretty sure that the Walkie talkies that appeared when the main character’s gf moved in was supposed to be a cute couples thing so they can message each over it at any time. Also I think the gf’s career is writing as they most likely made the book together. I might be wrong but this is just how I saw it as.

    @lauravient4077@lauravient4077 Жыл бұрын
    • I like the theory that they wrote the book together but if this was the case I would have liked there to be more signs of this - the poster for the book only has the main character on it and the office only has one the one desk and chair.

  • I love this game. I totally relate to the character, being lgbt, into art, being nerdy and also struggling with chronic illness. It’s so clever how they managed to fit in so much information with unpacking :)

  • I just played through this yesterday. I didn't realized then that the MC was disabled. Makes sense why soccer and rock climbing disappeared from her life. I remember when I was unpacking in the Boyfriend's house, getting increasingly annoyed at the character, having to fit the MX into his space and annoyed at how little if it we are actually given. Nowhere near enough space for the MC to be herself.

    • Wait- I'm just having the realization people have bathroom mirrors that aren't cabinets- Both the ones in my house are so I just don't think about it. It is an easy place to keep medicine and stuff though!
