Dr Armon Tamatea is a clinical psychologist and senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Waikato, New Zealand.
Previously a senior research advisor for the Department of Corrections where he worked extensively in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of violent, sexual and high-risk psychopathic offenders. His current research interests include psychopathy, gang communities, criminal justice and indigenous peoples, and institutional violence in prisons.

It makes me sad to see how many people don't have a proper grasp on the concept of psychopathy and it's meaning on society. Psychopathy is a genetic predisposition, which is a likely outcome of evolution, an evolutionary disorder caused by the violence inherent in human society. Not all violence is caused by psychopaths, but violence does create the need for such psychopathic traits to emerge for a means to survive under these harsh conditions. Just like not all people are good and not all are bad, not all psychopaths are deranged lunatics who just want to murder all day. Some live "as normal as they can" lives, trying to adapt to their environment while keeping their own sense of moral standards. If you dare to say that all "bad" people are psychopaths, and you manage to isolate all psychopaths from society, and you still find murderers, rapists, and other horrors of society among you, whom is left to blame? I do not condone pulling the trigger on someone who MIGHT do something bad because of his genes, but it shouldn't be left unsupervised either, with proper guidance, such traits can be harnessed for the betterment of society itself, if people only stopped trying to blame others for the horrors of the world.
But is also Environmental and social factors too not just genetics.
Indeed, though the whole subject becomes complex, when you factor sociopathy, and how not all psychopaths have all psychopathic tendencies, or how sociopaths may show some psychopathic tendencies at a different level and so. I think what makes the whole subject so complex is that the situation that leads to a certain psychological disorder varies wildly among so many different people and social situations, causing diverging evolutionary paths and survival mechanisms.

You are right: there are also narcissists, sociopaths, anti socially disorderd people. It is not all psychopaths. And eventhough you are right about them not all being evilminded.... but the ARE damaging in many ways. I lived with many people who were to some degree psychopathic or they scored enough to be a fully blown psychopath. None of them was evilminded, yet horribly damaging to others !!!
Psychopathy is just freedom from the constraints of feeling that would prevent entertaining the thought to kill someone.. You would need to be a sadist or terribly damaged person to actually do it. Psychopaths for the most part, have a concept of morality and ethics like everyone else. It’s just that when you combine psychopathy with, say sadism, you get an individual with no leash and a desire to do harm.. That’s dangerous. Separately, the two can exist fairly well in society...
I was diagnosed with ASPD awhile ago....And when I opened up about it, many people were fine with it until they looked it up. Suddenly, people I had known for years didn't trust me. It was like the label suddenly, in their mind, mutated me into a monster that they didn't recognize. Fuckin labels.... ....I never hurt anybody, im not in jail, I'm not a criminal....I'm a stay at home father of two. That label, however, likely just made you feel a tinge of worry when I said 'stay at home father' and thats a painful thing I get from all sides.
KandaPanda I admire your bravery and honesty, but judging from the overwhelming majority of comments here alone, pray you stay safe and well because of the hive or group mind and mob mentality which typically sees the majority in-group seek to scapegoat, persecute and even physically harm those they perceive as "other" or "out-group". One commentator goes as far as conflating "Jimmy Saville" or the well-known consensually-determined archetypal predatory paedophile and alleged necrophiliac. I'm aware that the ICD-10, commonly used in Britain and Europe as an alternative to the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV, now V or in its 5th edition, and makes no delineation between "asocial, antisocial, psychopathic and sociopathic" to cite a few of the approximate dozen conditions it classifies and labels beneath the same disorder. Having studied "Atypical Psychology" at postgraduate level as part of Social Psychology, and now in my early 50s, I'm much more aware of psychology's history and origins, its raison d'être being that of compliance, conformity and obedience, the less well-known child experimentation which directly followed on from the early experiments on rats, dogs and monkeys, as well as its other academic purpose being to validate and give credibility to psychiatry. Both pseudo-sciences are premised on man being nothing more than a stimulus-response animal devoid of a soul or conscience, deeply ironic given its utilisation of the Greek "psyche" meaning "spirit" and "iatros" meaning "physician/healer" therefore a psychiatrist transliterates meaning "doctor of the soul". It's highly improbable any two practitioners of so subjective a philosophy would ever agree on any diagnostic label, and these are used to serve what is today a multibillion dollar transnational pharmaceutical industrial and continually expanding psychopharmaceutical service industry of clinicians, therapists, nurses, auxiliaries, care assistants, and so forth, and its sister conglomerate with many ties to the petroleum and armaments or military-industrial complex, "Big Pharma", so I've a feeling you don't need reminding your "diagnosis" was originally one clinician's personal, highly subjective judgement which in all likelihood bears little if any relation to you as a father, parent, individual human being, man, son, brother or uncle if applicable, and so on, and you as a unique member of a community and society. I feel so upset if not angry reading you narrate the way your friends turned their backs on you. I hope you've sorted the wheat from the chaff and have made better social relationships.I almost wrote "felt sorry for you" in all honesty, but feel your personal strength, integrity and resilience between the lines you wrote. Clearly, such betrayal and abandonment ought make any rational, feeling person wonder who precisely is allegedly "devoid of empathy and conscience" or is truly messed-up after hearing what you say. You are, after all, the same person as before you were given this "label" let alone confided this with those you'd thought to be "friends". So. When it comes to reactions : It is because ASPD belongs to the Cluster B !.....of personality disorders, which are incredibly complex due to their Narcissistic traits. Cluster A's are not in any better position when it comes to reactions of others, as the matter of fact they face the harshest stigmas (specially Schizophrenia diagnosed individuals, who are known as aggressive.. but during hallucinations only.!..) .....Cluster B's are known as either aggressive - overtly abusive (ASPD's and BPD's), ....or passive aggressive - covertly abusive (NPD's and HPD's.) ....What "Passive Aggressive" means when it comes to Dramatic and Erratic Cluster B disorders in particular : ...Is being psychologically manipulative and/or destructive in variety of ways! ...All of them are lacking remorse!... + Their Conscience is impaired! ..They often, purposely, seek empathy from others... Excuse and/or Blame others, for their behaviors!..............Confusing oneself for an Introvert ? Purposely or obliviously ?!? It does not matter!!.............................Your problem is not "Labels"....your problem Is having specific Traits, and having AT LEAST.. 1 number too many of those traits....which got you on the list of Clusters considered : Extreme!...

We're not just talking about "feelings". If the psychopath doesn't understand the actions that those feelings will generate, then disaster may ensue. No, the successful psychopath must care about those feelings, and manipulate them to do her bidding.
Not really, soldiers, law enforcement and intelligence agencies need reliable, dependable people with a strong sense of duty. Psychopaths are self centered mavericks who take risks and put others who serve along side them at unnecessary risk. When you have a grandiose image of yourself, you are not fit to serve.

The problem with psychopaths in the military or police, is that they wouldn’t give two cents if their brothers are hurt, they’d just leave you there for example. As for the police, you need people with emotions, to be able to understand the people they are supposed to help. The only job in the police I see them being useful, is as an interrogator.
"Normal social" people would let me die just because they don't like me, so who is my enemy? 1% of the dudes who just have fun playing or 98,99,9% of the people who say "You aren't normal and you don't have friends and family so your life don't matter."
That's not necessarily true, they may save you because that's what they are expected to do to continue the status quo. It's more likely they would save you to get something from you later. It's also something to note, that if you put a person, even a psychopath in a position where they are engaged (violent fighter, soldier etc, somewhere their natural impulses are celebrated) they will generally follow the rules, not because they are being told to, but because they enjoy what's happening so why upset the apple cart. People forget that even psychopaths can learn to pick their battles and learn to somewhat direct and control their impulses. Remember, the crazy people we see as criminals are the ones who GET CAUGHT because they failed to maintain control.
What a lot of people don't realize is besides not all psychopaths being violent, not all psychopaths are even ambitious. My mother and I have given this issue a lot of thought due to some immediate family members. One recent example of what might be considered a "functional" psychopath, in my mind, was the character Sameen in the final season of PERSON OF INTEREST.

I was married to a psychopath who, not only took no responsibility for his actions, but had no regard for the massively hurtful implications for what he did to everyone everywhere he went. Talking about 'what psychopaths do' without linking each and everyone of those actions to the implications/destructive outcomes is a very narrow minded way to address this. 'Being free of societal expectations' ? I have watched people's lives destroyed by the actions of a psychopath whose so-called 'freedom from societal expectations' has caused widespread destruction. Freedom is the wrong term to use here. Are they 'free' to do whatever they want despite societal expectations?
Was this a clinically diagnosed psychopath or of your own conclusion? I ask because of a very distinct contradiction of psychopathy you stated in that your ex wouldn’t take responsibility. A psychopath will always acknowledge what they’ve done regardless of the harm it causes others. All decisions are rationalized and believed. Too often people equate harm to psychopathy when more commonly they mean a type of sociopath. I do hope things are better for you now.

Psychopaths exist in our society not because they are “useful” but simply because there is an evolutionary opening available for those who can skilfully exploit others for their own gain. The reason it’s not a majority is that the advantages of that behaviour are balanced out by the disadvantages of being able to form close social bonds as a member of a highly social species like humans.

They are not inherently bad people but the lack of empathy makes them have less reason not to take advantage of others where neurotypicals rather look for a different solution.
The big issue with that is they occupy a lot of positions of power, though majority stay behind the curtains, they just wait for the opportunity. Besides violent crimes there are a lot of crimes in law enforcement, healthcare, politics, charities etc. usually they hold central position with access to most crucial resources, technically they do not need permission to hurt others. I’m not saying we absolutely do not need psychopaths, but we need to construct our system that way that it will be less likely for them to abuse the system and others. We have to take into consideration mental differences before we entrust something to someone.
This argument is very flawed. I tried to understand his ideas but still not convinced. The manipulation of psychopath is real. What good is there to have people doing whatever they want, while causing misery to others for no reason? How can we want a society like that?
it depends on the individual psychopaths are one in ten people. but its a scale its the morale and ethical codes of individuals and there goals that make them who they are. for instance one can be a physco but highly value rules and laws in that case he or she is not likely to brake those laws. however, if a situation of violence out side the rules of law present themself ( ie active gunman) outside from trained professionals ( law enforcement) the first one to react in a aggressive manner is like to have some psychopathic traits as they have less of a morale barrier to overcome when it comes to using force to get their way. ( thier way being not getting shot)
and then the question remains..; how do they relate to others, their family and so forth... u will usually find some one in their circle who is being used by them.. There always is !

Psychopaths are more likely to pick moral options than neurotypicals because they are thinking about everything abstractly and coldly. usually this is why when they are talking to people they seem quite nice.

This is a real hard one to swallow. Sure, I can see that in certain positions that the unbridled behavioral manifestations of a psychopath are "useful" and who's instrumental approaches are even admiral, but aren't these the same people that do not have even the capacity to want to protect say, a baby? Or a child. I really don't care how "useful" a person could be, or how effective they would be in certain positions, if they have no empathy for another human being by design, I don't want them here! Period. If this valuable and effective psychopath somehow loses their position for which they can find satisfaction with, do we have any guarantees what road they will take in perusing the next satisfying target? What, or Who will that be? Another trait of a psychopath appears to be the tendency to use up the person or position they are in, and when there is nothing left of that, to target up something else. In other words, they do not find satisfaction in one thing, they get bored and look for "another pursuit". This to me is what makes them extremely dangerous. Perhaps they have some role in society, but perhaps our role is to remove them from that role when we discover what they really are and what they would be capable of doing given the opportunity. I would create a "psychopath island" and let them all target and preditoriorize each other.

If a sociopath saw someone get murdered on the street would he keep walking without batting an eye. Humans still try to protect each other, even if it's just self-righteously prove himself as a glorious hero. Or just a good person. Actually, what is interesting, is it is the corporate and government entities that all lack the subjective ability to be held responsible to regard us as the emotional, psycho-socio beings that humans are, for the objective nature that entities are set up as, controlled and operated as, and governed by according to the definitions and duties undertaken in their own articles of incorporation and by-laws.
However I do believe we have to figure a way to prevent and somehow address these individuals for change. Otherwise we will continue to see a long trail of victims they leave behind.

Sometimes I don't know what to think or feel I'd like to be normal up to a certain extent I want to be able to understand people I don't know I feel plain, it's nice knowing I'm a psychopath for my own understating and knowledge. Psychopathy is not a mental illness (i saw a commenter referring to it this way), it's a hard-wired way of life. Psychopaths may fit into societal structures if it suits them, but this is nothing but a mask they put on. The underlying predatory and/or parasitic framework, i.e. the way in which he/she views others remains. To say that we need intra-species predators in our societies is akin to suggesting that every human needs a malignant tumor. They don't care to get along with others. Interactions are always based on a selfish need. Normal humans have two-way interactions, it's a give and take. A hard-wired sense of morality, of feeling guilty when you did wrong. To psychopaths, this way of thinking is a weakness to be exploited. The world is run by the a pyramid structure of their making and has been for eons. We don't need more of that ilk in our societies, we need to weed them out. Maybe not until we are capable of listening to the thoughts of others will the we understand that the veil of language is their primary tool of manipulation. They are the malignant cancer of earth, the organism we are part of. They proliferate by deception and mimicry. To promote or to rationalize psychopathy is to help in the metastasization of this malignancy. For millennia, this ilk has been manipulating us into looking at their exploitation as a form of superiority. It's time to pull back the curtain and call a spade a spade. No contact with these malignant cancers is the only way to not become infected. Spot them and remove them from your life permanently. Trust your gut and your intellect. Think independently. Don't be swayed by titles. The vast, vast majority of psychopaths are not violent. When interactions occur and people 'give and take' the only reason they give is to take. Psychopaths give and take as well, they just recognize that all interaction is for personal benefit. Selfishness is not an inherently bad thing.

And yes it is often so but those who use others and who aren't psychopaths have the ability to learn from their behavior. We are all psychopaths to a certain degree. After all, we did evolve in a very competitive and harsh environment. But the future we are building doesnt require those traits and we better figure what humans will evolve to now that we can actually control our journey.

It's the narcissists and the sociopaths we should worry about. Many of those who aren't aware of themselves having a disorder hold a lot of responibility jobwise while they actually show certain handicaps one of them lacking the capabiltiy of calculating complex consequenses of decisions in a social sphere. Every disorder or mental illness are all adaptions to fit into specific environments. Just like ptsd is a reaction to dealing with a very dangerous or highly stressful environment. Its how your mind best programs itself for survival. Its actually the sign of a healthy adaptable mind, not a weak or broken one. The problem comes in when they return back to the original environment, but arent driven to reset their mind for it. Sociopaths & psychopaths are the same, theyre adaptions and survival enhancing tools. You can draw a line between psychopath and sociopath, as sociopaths are more likely to use aggression to get what they want. I've dealt with them and they're more narcissistic. And annoying. Being a psychopath doesn't necessarily make someone more prone to commit crimes or anything. It just means they're physically unable to empathize or get anxiety like the general population.

Another is that when they are creative they can make AMAZING things for all of human kind. They aren't afraid of taking risks when it comes to failure. They try, try, and try again until they get the outcome they want. So yes, I believe they are horrible for human relationships and love but good for the material/leadership world. Then, you have to think about it...🤔 What if there are 2 types of humans? Like, different breeds. What I mean is, take a chickadee and a hawk, two very different species. Or a Rottweiler and a golden retriever. They are the same but very different. What if humans are the same and we just don't know it? What if psychopaths, sociopaths, and narcissists (cluster b) are an entirely different species all together and we just don't know it? It’s no fault of theirs that there synapses don’t create this chemical or that chemical. It’s like being upset with someone who is depressed because their depressed. And he is quite anxious throughout his entire talk, although that may just be how he is convincing you of his authenticity. I will say he did say a few things that made me think he was a psychopath as well. Most of that can be written off his long career and understanding of psychopaths though. I think inclusion is key , often feeling on the outside for so long can be exhausting.

Psychopaths do feel and even understand concepts like empathy, guilt, shame, and integrity. They just may not react or internalize them as others do. You may say that taking life in any capacity is bad; whereas a psychopath will have rationalized the reason for doing so, in the sense that it was the only option at the time. Saying it’s wrong while they watch militaries and police officers get away with it contradicts the statement allowing for open perspective on the issue. You must first correct the actions of society before imposing punishments on defectors to the “norms.” A psychopath wouldn’t agree with racism as thinking less of someone because of the color of their skin is ludicrous; but they would exploit others racism to manipulate outcomes (e.g. Dahmer, Gacy). Their harms only continued at those rates due to the failures in society. Your view only allows for them to be criminals or dangerous individuals. I assure you, many of them work in public service, are philanthropists, advocates and activists, and become exceeding successful; thanks to your inability to see them as human. Society grows and changes, why wouldn’t you assume psychopaths do too.

They struggle to incorporate context-relevance into decisions or adapt to context change, they don't dwell on multiple ways of doing things that are equally valid and don't gravitate towards imagining or embracing many possibilities. They apply simple rules without rigorous evaluation of appropriateness. They are "open" to deciding whatever perspective they can manage to take is "the only option at the time".
