  • _Primer_ is, for me, THE best sci-fi movie ever made... The concept and plot/story are SO solidly brilliant (with side-plot details tweaked), that for me it transcends even the best-of-all-time sci-fi films, in the strength of its idea and storyline, _despite_ its extremely low budget, poor production values, and relatively poor/flat (though well-attempted) acting. I _so pray_ for the day that it's remade, PROPERLY. I would love to see Nolan do it, perhaps! And also: WOW - I had NO idea that the guy who wrote Primer, also wrote f'ing Sunshine...!! Incredible. My second-favorite sci-fi of all time has gotta be The Martian. The story is a compellingly real-world/real-science "impossible" human challenge, and actually absent any real bad-guy role; the opponent/antagonist was solely the infinite pressure on him to logically surrender to his (and his situation's) hopelessness - he had to maintain hope and vigor, despite being marooned on fucking _Mars._ An amazing experience and extremely rewatchable, for me - and perfectly conceived and written... and produced and directed, etc.

  • Finally a list I can totally agree with. The Fountain is brilliant and I stumbled upon it years ago. It had such an impact on me I actually find it very hard to watch as it really hits me that hard emotionally. Between the story, the acting and the visual effect I get completely pulled in. It becomes hard to shift back into reality afterwards. Midnight Special was another happy accident and highly worth watching. It was not at all what I was expecting and I am glad for it. Idiocracy is more like a documentary sent back in time 500 years to warn people about the dangers of staying on the current path and was done perfectly. I've lost count of how many times I've seen it and every time I notice something else that I missed previously. I (sadly?) use this movie to judge people. If they tell me they "don't get it" I know so much more about them than if I had asked them any other question. Dredd...there is nothing else to add here other than it is just amazing. Blows me away every time and it was done perfectly. Very disturbing at times but it is all necessary and none of that over-the-top sci-fi tech nonsense. Down and dirty, grit in your teeth reality and very plausible. Sunshine...another hard to watch movie at times but well worth it. Brings up many difficult thoughts and feelings and often it is hard to be introspective. It shows us aspects of ourselves we might not want to see. Under the skin was...creepy, and it changed my outlook on a few things. Might be a bad thing but I look at people differently and try to find hidden motives. Not everyone is as they appear on the surface. You have to look, well, under the skin to see the real "them". Moon was a VERY slow start but well worth hanging around for. Upgrade is a must see. If anything it did a great job at showcasing the dangers of just giving in to technology and how it is leading to the loss of our humanity. Much more than a simple action film. Very powerful underlying messages if you're willing to look and pay attention.

  • "Upgrade" was MUCH better than I was expecting the first time I saw it. It had heart and action and very good effects, and the acting was spot on... and the plot had nuance and twists without straying too far from a tried and true revenge story. Best movie ever? No, but it's better than most by a wide margin, and the people who made it earned my respect. 8.5/10

  • Looks like a few others have mentioned it, but Coherence is a killer science fiction. There's no aliens, space travel or robots - no special effects of any kind, really. It's set in present day, and the set of almost the entire movie is one completely ordinary house. They start seeing dopplegangers of themselves and spend the rest of the film trying to figure out what is happening until one character takes adantage of it in the last act. It's quiet, clever, smart, well-written and cast with all unknowns. It ranks with Moon as a mindbender, and pulls off a lot with very little.

The effects are eye-popping, but they do not overshadow a very good, romantic original story. I LOVE a *good* time travel movie, and I trust your judgement, so I paused your video and ordered Predestination. I am very much looking forward to it. The Fountain reminds me of Slaughterhouse Five, which I didn't like overall, but enjoyed the sci-fi scenes so much that I cut them into a separate 10-minute short. Spektral - Netflix mix of sci-fi and supernatural, but in an action movie. Surprisingly good. I am Mother - Netflix straight up good sci-fi film Children of Men - Incredible big-concept film, brilliantly directed. Packs an emotional punch. Source Code - Loved this. I don't think it got the praise it deserved. 2. Indie films easy to miss by definitely worthy of this list: Repeat - Fantastic sci-fi indie movie with great acting, emotional heft and a brilliant twist. Another Earth - Emotional slow-paced, but so worth staying to the end. The Sound of my Voice - Low budget sci-fi time-travel film. Not what you expect, but will have you hooked to the end. • I do watch Sunshine on occasion. It also features an admittedly overused track, Adagio in D Minor, but it's still powerful if you immerse yourself in it. Definitely heard of Turbo Kid, and I'm pretty sure I watched it? Not 100% certain on that though. The Fountain was a bit of a slow burn film, as I recall. Definitely felt a bit enamoured with its own visuals. I think it was better than Cloud Atlas though, which was a somewhat similar film. I'm not sure, it has been years since I've seen either, and to be frank I wasn't especially keen on either. Saw Moon as well, though I don't remember the specifics of how it turned out, I do recall that I saw it coming, which probably spoiled it a bit for me?

  • Great list! I confirmed I'm a sci-fi sucker, cause I've watched all of them. Except for Under The Skin, that one slipped under my radar, so thank you! One movie I can recommend is Prospect (2018) with Pedro Pascal. I though it had great visuals/production design for an indie movie! You just earned a new subscriber 😊

    • Under the Skin is excellent, and such a different take on alien visitation. It's worthwhile reading Michel Faber's novel too, the source material, it fills in some of the back story regarding the aliens that you don't get to understand from the film.

  • Pretty good list. However, the most underrated sci-fi film, not just of this century, but of all time, is Cloud Atlas. It is an achingly beautiful film with flawless acting, directing, cinematography, music, everything, and it has never gotten one one-hundredth of the respect it deserves. It also happens to be the finest film made by the Wachowski siblings. Yes, even superior to their masterpiece The Matrix.
