We decided to compare the performance between these two bikes that have a HUGE difference in pricing and the results shocked us! Matty Cranmer did 5 different tricks on each of these bikes and to our surprise he rode the much cheaper bike better than his own custom bike! This just goes to prove that the technology and quality of modern day BMX bikes has come a long way!

Just because it’s what he wanted doesn’t mean it’s what best suits his style
As someone who was stuck riding a 21” but needed a 20.75 it may feel better in the air and ramps but on street it’s a world better riding a smaller frame if you aren’t 6’ or above
After watching this video, I think I need a bigger frame, I'm about 5'5 and I ride a 20.5 top tube but I feel so cramped for some reason. I've always felt like I needed a bigger frame but every website says 20.5 is what I need so I wasn't too sure, but after seeing matt do better on a bigger frame despite it not being his frame of choice, to me confirms I need a bigger frame.
Couldn’t have said it better brother😊
@@emanthegman9511go for a 20.75 I have some homies who are closer to that height and that’s what they ride and like I wish I could recommend it but I’m 6’5 so it’s a 21” plus for me😂😂
@@emanthegman9511 the more you know right ?? watching this video and reading the comments I'm realizing why my 5'10" ass cant get the bars around on my 20.25" top tube bmx lol good excuse for a new frame I guess !!! big thanks to scotty and matty for this video and info haha
Chromoly frame, fork, and handlebar plus double-walled rims with sealed bearings in the hubs and 2 piece chromoly cranks for this price. Mongoose is doing it proper!
This is all standard on every bmx bike. Some frames are high tensile steel but just about anything you buy will be chromoly.
@@neonnerd1364 you can get frames with the front triangle Chromoly and the back end hi tensile steel a friend had one and bent the backend from ice pick stalls allways look at the specs of the frame before buy it
@neonnerd1364 not for this price nerd. (Jk only cause ur name u picked) A buddy paid 600 for a WTP that only had top tube and down tube 4130. The rest hi-ten and it snapped. Subrosa charges over 600, I think 675 for this type of complete. Cult charges almost 600 and single wall in the front as well. Kink and Sunday are the only ones that do bikes this cheap but they are single wall rims in front with non sealed bearings. My point being, mongoose is doing it properly for the price. You can't beat it
@@scottbradford4130 i’ve been riding Bmx since 1985. I used to work in the BMX Shop I’m 44 still riding Bmx now I’ve seen it evolve over the years and I’m not a nerd.
@pauljames4510 lol wasn't talking to you dude. Notice the username in front of the reply
It'd be cool to see Matty ride the L100 more to see how it holds up to aggressive riding over time. Maybe trim the bars to make it more homey.
This would be excellent to see
Nah leave as is
Good point. Stress test that thing
Yes, stress it without intentionally destroying it.
I'd be interested to see what would happen if Matty tried tricks with the complete first. I wonder if Matty did another try on his custom if it would have been cleaner than his previous try. Regardless a great video and I am impressed with the complete!
i believe so he already landed the trick before switching bikes but regardless dude has skill and theyre great bikes
that would only be fair if he got a week or so to get used to that complete
Great video, guys. I bought my latest bike complete but ended up changing the things I wasn’t comfortable with. It’s easy to rack up a lot of money doing that. It’s nice to see an “out of the box” bike perform this well
The pop on that flair on the L100 was insane, I feel like he could flair smaller quarters on that bike
I think the frame dimensions might have been better for him 🤔 maybe that frame suits him better. See if the mongoose team can hook him up with some options. Or try putting his bits on that frame to see if it feels like home. I'm interested to see if this gets followed up on and it'd be cool to see a video about the mongoose team making stuff 😀 proper legends
Maybe the longer top tube is better for Matty? looks well proportioned on him
Every bmx should add 2" to top tube, subtract 2" from stem, and shorten rear end 2". Thank me after you start the first profitable bmx company in the 21st century.
Honestly I think I need a bigger frame too, I've always felt cramped on my current frame
i’m glad you guys made this video i’ve always wanted to see a complete bmx vs a custom bmx
No surprise Matty's a beast, but it's good to see "they" are offering good quality bike for reasonable prices for entry level kids or adults that just want to go easy and try to relive the past.
21” TT and the uncut Bars, give you a more stable roomier and more comfortable feeling bike. It makes bar spins a little harder but everything else feel smoother. Also the big spongy tires help dampen the impact through the bars, however maybe just jump up to like a 2.2 tire and bigger frame. Really think Matt might look even more comfortable and smooth with that setup.
I did the same change on my Kink Whip XL, changed the tires for Eclat Mirages and it made a world of difference
Really interesting video, BMX completes have come on so much now. My first three completes was Haro in the early 2000’s but it just shows how far and affordable manufacturing a bike has become yet also scary that a “complete” is just as good and as strong as a custom built BMX. As for Matty, I think you need to up to a 21” TT, the back ends are so short now it makes up for the rest of the geometry! The bars on the complete remind me of the Fly Bikes bars but Thinner tyres and that thing would be dialed!
Great video!! I think the big difference for him is that the top tube is a little longer. It changes the body position, as well as creating a different throw( leverage)
The weight in itself helps the rotation.. It's an even match to his tech riding.. sometimes lighter is not better..
Especially with big jumps, a heavier bike gives you more controlle and makes things automatic smoother, but lighter bikes may give you more opportunities for more dynamic tricks. At least that‘s how it feels to me
Dope video Scott and Matt
I reckon matty is liking the feeling of the little bit more headtube angle. It's a great feeling for flowy riders.
somehow i missed this video. i have the mongoose L100. and i am blown away with it. i have rode it in many of my videos this last spring and summer. it rules.
looks like matty needs a longer tt
nice vid guys! is matty gonna be doing another racing vid soon?
The difference always being the parts package that comes on stock bikes. Usually cheaper hubs, wheels, unsealed bearings, partial Chromoly tubing instead of full in the frame, etc. You can for sure get a great stock bike nowadays especially depending on how much you want to dish out as alot you premium parts at added cost of course.
I love my L100! Matty switching to Mongoose is what sold me on getting it, besides the price.
Great video!!
This is one crazy video. Awesome experiment!
Could be the 21" top tube? Matty is an AWESOME RIDER!! Great video!
I’d like to see y’all do a review of a 22” bmx bike Get y’all’s thoughts and input on it
The kink in those front bars is what made all the difference 😂
My first bike as an adult, after 20 years off of bikes was an L100. I updated the stem, but otherwise, it's been a dream. I'm really a mountain bike guy, but make sure to get on the 'goose at least a couple times a month.
Man, I love you guys. The last time I whatch you was in 2015 i guess.
I would like to see Matty do a track stand challenge on different bikes, then do the same challenge/bikes challenge for others
Awesome vidddd!
I am a MTB’er and I have wanted to get into BMX a little, been thinking about the l100 but have been hesitant, at least now i know that when i do decide to pull the trigger i can be comfortable in knowing that it will suit me for my entry skill level.
Buy a used ride off Vital, don't support these Walmart sellouts
@AndyDandy123 do you actually know anything about bmx?
It seems all the styley riders run longer top tubes, bigger bars too. Matt definitely looked way steezier on the 21". I know once I started riding a longer front end, they kept getting longer, each new frame I got. Would of liked to see Matt crank a turndown or lookback over that hip on the L100.
the entirety of scotty's dialogue sounds like hes announcing it at xgames
The length and wider bars added control. It made it easier to center himself.
Great video Scotty and Matty.. took my kids to a wheels skate park.. ANY SCHOOL/ CLASSES THAT YOU TEACH FOR KIDS to learn BmX? Mention on next video
yo scotty, just bought my first bmx bike today!!! been watching your channel religiously for 7 years! since i was like 12!! crazy man. was cool at the bike shop today, the guy who sold me the bmx bike also really digs your YT. Your impact on the BMX community is outstanding. Thanks for everything once again
Great video! Really like the bars that come one the l100. I've got a cult devotion complete atm, definitely best frame I've ever rode.
He should be on that Scotty Cranmer titanium finish bro. don't forget the Cory B in all black that's nice
Long tip tubes and short backends you spin so nicely. It’s smooth and steezy… Matty should get a 21.25 top tube bike and get the smallest possible rear end. This makes the back end twitchy for tech tricks but in the air it’s smooth. I have run that style frame as long as I can remember, they are so much more fun to ride. When you are over the back it’s twitchy and over the front it flows, so you can do all your tech stuff without issues but you don’t lose out on airs. Plus there is so much more room for tricks
I bet the longer back end helped Matty on that flair. It was SOOOOOOOOOOOO SMOOTH.
I don't ride BMX but I do ride freestyle unicycle. Scott in this video sounds like a AM radio talk show host
Matty - spec the custom with the complete bike geometry. 21tt 13cs etc 🚴♂️great vid thx 🙏
Doing the moves always on the Mongoose second means he has already practiced the move on his own custom so maybe he felt more confident/prepared. Great video!
Does it make difference between left and right side sprocket
Normal people: Stock bike Cranmers: Complete bike
Snagged my L100 used for $100... All it needed was a bit of maintenance and it's great.
Not been to the Channel in a Minute being Honest.. Sorry Scott n matt n everyone else But Geeeeezelaweeezepapacheese got to Commend these 2 Brothers - complete Gangstas of the BMX trueeeee class in their Professional demeanour but all heart for everything ❤. I'm 48 and 6'3 300lbs.... I love the stability of Mongoose. Always been a favorite of mine. Calm down people.... I'm loosing weight since riding again. LOL! Really like that Legion! Maybe in my future. Great video guys!
The L500 is a great bike for bigger riders and not much more than the L100 in cost.
@@modelcitizen394 I will look into it for sure.
Back to back flare was so good.
Probably the slightly slacker headtube and longer chainstays were more stable for bigger tricks. Where as the shorter frame is good for street and tech tricks. The top tube length might have some effect but most likely the geo is the reason bigger tricks looked smoother
0:42 giving joe dirt firework scene vibes lol
The big soft wheels helped immensely on the flair. Soft big squishy wheels allowing for a less intense pop resulting with less stiffness
i definity pick l100 cause you know im used of long chainstay and its durable it hold up to advanced tricks keep it up
Bros got mad skills but still got the nerves. Only human! I love how he's questioning his BMX existence after landing everything easier on the new bike 😂 "I gotta talk to the design team" lol
I’ve been saying it for years that Matty has one of the prettiest flairs in the game. Which is why I always laugh when he and Scotty say he has trouble with them!
Matty should def consider riding a 21"tt he looked really comfortable on that legion
BMX bikes came a long long way I still have my original bike when I was a kid a Haro Shredder and I tried to ride it a few days ago with my son and the whole time I was thinking, How did I ride this thing as a kid and do tricks on it. It's unbelievable how far BMX has come and the prices. If I remember I think my dad told me that my bike was around $800 - $900 at the time insane to what we have now.
Great idea for a comparisson. And its always better to find the own way. Some Pros know what they need and customize it for their needs. I don't like the 100 PSI tires. So I know that it will be more comfort with less PSI. But I am far away from the shown skills. I am to old to learn that, but I love riding my BMXs. 20" is killer on all Pumptracks. Have good times riding bikes. All the best ❤
That flair 😂 thats doing Matts head in now - thinking he may Need to redesign a new Frame😂❤
i got my new mongoose L100 for 300 on amazon because it was last years color. but same rimes. tires. cranks. frame. mine listed for 500 but i paid 300 and it is the best trick bike i ever owned and i have owned many high end bikes.
I have Mongoose L500 is that good? Thicker tyres compared to that L100 and the weight is very light that i can lift it with one finger.
well..honestly there is nothing on paper that says a custom bike should or could be better than a built bike. Its like buying a bike and changing seats. The seat wont make you a better rider really lol..In most cases its the rider, not the bike..
Man as a rider in my younger days myself found the longer frame was always comfortable and easy to spin and move I had the Garry fisher special blue with clouds was the best thing I ever rode till got stolen
my thoughts are the longer frame/ wheel base would allow the bike to swing better. More weight that gets thrown around. Heavier to get going but once in rotation it goes.
Great vid.
i have the L500 (only major difference is that it has a Freeccoaster while the L100 has cassette) 2020 model and I am loving the bike. I am no where near as good as Matty but this solidifies my choice from 3years ago! (Not that I had doubts lol)
Love my L100. Especially swapping a few parts out. New pedals, 100psi tires, and a half-link made it feel like a way better bike.
@@lane2376 my l500 came with half link chains but it burst on me while riding over a hill… don’t even try to imagine the pain experienced… I have changed them out to Shadow Supreme and they have been legendary since
@@iStiflock I went with the regular Shadow interlock for now, but that mushy saggy feeling while pedaling is gone. Mine came with 65psi 2.25s that I swapped for S&M Speedball 2.4s and speed is no longer an issue. Felt like I had to dig to go fast enough for anything before
That’s why I run 21.3… It’s so flowy and nice in the air. If you can get a short backend it’s good in manuals
I would imagine that doing the trick on the custom right before doing it on the complete is some good practice and affects the results. Maybe next time try complete first. Still, it's incredible how good that complete is for the price, and only 2 pounds different! I wonder how different the long term reliability is
I would love to see another musical bikes vid that was so cool
I've been looking at buying a complete for dirt and trails. My park bike is full custom and I love it but I could flow trails better with a bit longer bike and most the completes out there are pretty awesome. Especially above the $450 price
I have expensive bikes and also the L100, and the L100 is a legit bike, and can handle anything you can throw at it.
Matty needs the same geometry as the L1 for his sig frame!! lol
Those bars look cool.
Part of the bias in this experiment is always using the same bike for the first attempt. The second attempt will always come with more confidence than the first, on any bike.
Yes exactly. He needs to alternate which bike he tries the trick with first to have any chance of gaining any insight.
It's hard to explain, but I sometimes switch back and forth between first person shooter games and almost every time I do I get better mechanically even tho games are all different.. but then it fades. Something about the switch makes you more aware or less prepared in a way.
id say getting the practice attempts on his bike prepared him for the L100 so maybe do another where he switches witch bike he uses first for each trick he does
I think Matty needs to start riding a 21 top tube
That complete is actually a crazy good deal considering it’s all moly and had sealed bearings W for mongoose
its top tube length, look at his feet when he misses his pedals on his bike after the whips, his feet naturally went to where the complete bike would be
I have a complete different brand cro mo front triangle, in 3 years I've broken cranks and bars. 3 pegs and no brakes it's 26.4 lbs. I put on demolition momentum tires unaware of the weight and a 28 tooth sprocket. Every time i look at a replacement its heavier or doesn't ride the way i like
I think the reason the complete bike was easier is because he got to warm up on his custom bike
I always thought Matty looks crowded on his normal bike not that it affects his ability! However, with that being said he looks more comfortable on the longer frame! I have done that plenty of times figured out what i thought i preferred actually didn’t work in my favor!
I think Matty is gonna start running a longer top tube now 😂
the legion would be a good trail bike! longer top tube and mellow headtube angle, longer back end. 👌🔥
We gotta have a matty bike check I see u riding gsport and odyssey wheels new parts can u do a detailed one
I think the reason is that if you do 3 tries on your own bike that is try 1-3 and then if you hop on a bike you're not used to it really is try 4 on a slightly different bike.
It the overall weigh to bike and tire size. Try swing a soda can from a string and try swing a empty one.
It’s like this for almost everything now. Like I play guitar and before you really had to spend money to get a good guitar but now days you can get some really really god stuff for cheap
How tall is he? Im 5'11" and i run my bmx bike big. I have 9" tall bars, top load stem, uncut forktube on a set of pitchforks, running the BTM at 21.25"-.5" cant remember but it gives me so much room, you are more at ease when your riding and not so cramped. Also my bars are 30" wide and my crank arms are 180mm with 30t-8t gearing
Like the man said in "Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift", " It ain't the ride, it's the rider."
I personally believe the difference between Custom and Complete is comfort and consistency, If something works well for you and allows you to be consistent at the trick skillset you have made for yourself, then why change it? But as far as a complete bike goes, that L100 suits Matty to the ground. If he ever needs a back up, he knows where to look.
Sometimes the dimensions of a bike suit a rider better but it's not what the rider wants so maybe in this case Matty needs to swap his parts onto that frame and see how he feels riding those dimensons
I feel that he was rotating better because the tires on the complete had a bit of give to them if you watch when he rotated you can see them slightly fold acting like an elastic when he spins
The L100. Is amazing
I remember a few times where I could land a trick on a friend's bike but not on mine. Some set-ups just make certain tricks a bit easier to land. So if you are struggling on a trick next time try it on someone else's bike and see what changes!
All you proved is that top tube size is one of the most important factors for BMX sizing...
For at least 6 years if not longer Marty’s been riding the same geometry. The C2 frame wizard frame and the la familia frame are really close in geometry. He broke out big on tall order probably from having a longer back end. He should prototype a trails style frame geo and see what happens
The extra cost of the custom is on the increased quality of some of the parts. Everything in life has a point in which the minimal increase in quality comes with an exponential increase in cost. In the end, a rider that goes to a skatepark or does dirt jump trust his life on his bike and this is why we all try to invest as much as possible in our machines.
The green one looks like a Brant Moore complete bike..... LoL
i’ve been looking for bmx pad could you tell me what knee pad matty had on
