I've owned my SLK since 1998 and the phone is not original. The original phone was an analog model that can no longer be used (I recycled mine in 2007 when the FCC turned off the analog system). It was a small, stick style removable so you could carry it with you. It was able to be plugged in and placed in a cradle in the center console, where it would recharge (don't remember a separate charger available for it). It could then used as a speakerphone, through the audio system, using the dash control panel or, because it wasn't against the law yet, you could hold it to your ear (like the corded phones of the day). The original factory phone required an 18 inch, flexible exterior antenna that was placed on the driver's side rear panel. It had a 3 watt transmit amplifier that allowed you to connect with just about any analog cell tower within the visible horizon (3 watts at cell phone frequencies can hit the moon - most phones have under 0.1 watts for transmitting). But, since she looks younger than the car, it's not surprising that she doesn't know about the analog phone.
