I'd recommend looking into Viktor Kubal.
Thank you for spotlighting a much forgotten and misaligned director and animator to those who just forgot about him. Cheers!
animators are so expressive
Such a shame there aren’t many modern rereleases of Trnka’s work. I’d kill for some of these on Blu-ray, let alone 4K
the czech national film archive sometimes makes remasters, those seem however to mainly be accessible for licensing to institutions
I'm always mesmerized by animation and animatirs across the globe, from mexico to Russia there's always something out there to catch my eye. Thank you for showcasing the creative world of animation.
Have you heard of "Sandmännchen," a German television show for children that started in 1959 till 1989? Jiří Trnka's stop motion puppets reminded of the "Sandmännchen." During the division of Germany into East and West both had their respective East and West Sandmännchen, which was geared towards the predominant political and economical culture of the two territories. Besides that the Sandmännchen was a nice TV bedtime show. I had included a link to IMDb in the comment I wrote before this one, but it got deleted or recognized as spam by KZhead. But you can find images and videos on the internet. Cheers!
I adore Trnka’s work. I got to see a number of his films in theaters 6 years ago or so and immediately fell in love. The Cybernetic Grandma in particular blew my mind with its aesthetic and tone. It very much reminds me of another of my favorite films, Red Desert by Antonioni. Just a brilliant filmmaker.
Super, video. I super seen forgoten animators and their handmade animations.
-Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka je jeho nejlepšáí dílo za mě, viděl jsem to tak tisíckrát a má to legendání dabing -The fate of a good soldier Švejk is his best work for me, I've seen it a thousand times and it has a legendary dubbing
This channel is a gift from god
Though I've had exposure to Trnka, many titles here were new to me, and I didn't realize he had made cel animation as well. His films are full of charm, and adumbrate how animation at its best is meant for audiences of all ages, and is not exclusive to children's entertainment. Eastern Europe as a whole has such a rich heritage of animation. Some other countries that would be deservedly profiled could include Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria.
I’m definitely getting to those countries eventually!
Art has many forms wich even includes film, animation, music, poetry and photographes
Desperately need an episode about Kihachiro Kawamoto and Tadahito Mochinaga
Thanks for the recommendations! Two other directors I'd add are Jan Švankmajer and Karel Zeman
Pretty good pronunciation of Jiří Trnka
I have a mixed relationship to his work. He is a great inspiration for me as an animator, i'd say the most important of czech animators for me and i absolutely love his illustrations and character design. But when i was a kid i had a VCR with some fairytales on it and The hand and Cybernetic grandma were shorts playing at the beginning of the tape. I didn't know how to skip them because i was too little so i had to watch them multiple times and basically got traumatized :D the hand was my sleep paralysis demon since like 2 years old for a long time and it came almost every night and choked me.. and the grandma was a teriffying memory and i was scared of old people for a while. I watched the film when i was 15 again i got ill for a week from it. So.. it's not a style very good for children i'd say:D but as an adult i like it very much.
i just love your channel man, i've learned so much about animation from you
Glad to hear it!
Omg was waiting for this one i love trnka !!
Great video!
I'd really like it if you tackled the work of French animator Paul Grimault. He is best known for The King and the Mockingbird, a movie that was a cornerstone of inspiration for Miyazaki, but he also made a number of short animated films thru-out his career, which started in a style that emulated Disney but became progressively more personal (and a lot darker) as the years went by.
Excited to check his stuff out, thanks!
12:36 You know, I think that pictures that doubled as record players were a thing! My parents told me about post cards that did that.
Amazing!! make a video about the slovak animator Viktor Kubal too!
the swedish animatior and director Per Åhlin
You should do a video discussing Latvian Animation.
Video idea: Evolution of Mexican Animation, or Mexican cinema in general!
