  • Love Black Cod! We call them Butterfish in Hawaii but they aren’t from there. It’s always used in Lau Lau, a traditional Hawaiian dish steamed in Ti leaf wraps with pork. Now in Seattle I see Black Cod in the fish markets everywhere. Really expensive but I’ve splurged a few times and cooked it on the grill. Super fatty and buttery, it works great on the grill. The best way I’ve had it was smoked. My god that’s good! I’ve never seen a live fish and wasn’t sure how they were caught or where. Down deep. Great job catching some and reeling them in by hand. That’s exhausting! The few times I’ve fished that deep in Hawaii, we cheated using electric reels, but there’s no way to reel in 20 pound Opaka’paka from 600 feet by hand so… Great fishing trip Taku and welcome back to the States. 🤙🏼🍻

  • Looks like a fun trip! First fish was a North Pacific hake, a common West Coast species caught in a variety of depths, and a predator of young salmon. The others look like the juvenile black cod we regularly catch up here in Washington in 300-500’ over banks and gravel plateaus while targeting halibut. We have plenty of bigger black cod in deeper canyons from around 600-1500’ but they’re mostly caught by commercial fishers and anglers with electric reels. For sure the most delicious West Coast bottomfish.

    • Not the same Hake we get in South Africa but that one looks exactly the same but just a bit darker. Not for grilling, batter fry is the best

    • correct and in CA our adult black cod are more like 2-3000 feet deep. Pretty much all the rec caught black cod, electrics or otherwise, are juveniles 1-3lbs. Hake is super weird and pasty but like the other guy said they fry up great for tacos. That crunchy fry batter with the fluffy fish inside is perfect.

  • I love deep dropping. My favorite trips were on the Viking Fleet out of Montauk, NY. Golden and Blueline Tilefish, Wreckfish, Barrelfish, Cod, Pollock, Cusk and other bottom dwellers plus a shot at Tuna. all fishing was done at the Canyons to the East and to the South of Montauk. Depths ranged from 400' to 1200'. My choice of gear was an Avet JX 2 speed spooled with 50'. Good times and great eating.

  • Wonderful trip & food prep! Here in South Africa we have a fish called Hake which looks pretty much like the 'other' fish you caught. We mostly batter it and fry it - though the flesh seems to be more tighter/firmer than the 'Hake' you caught. It is a lovely tasting fish though! Till the next one!!
