We’re starting off 2023 with a bang by bringing you a brand new “5 Levels” lesson. This time, Ayla is breaking down the iconic Dire Straits song “Sultans of Swing.” This song is considered by many guitarists to be quite challenging, which unfortunately makes it inaccessible to a lot of players. In this video, you’ll learn to play it at five varying difficulty levels, so no matter where your skills are at, you’ll be able to strum along!

About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only playing for two years, her first KZhead video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

    • Given that she ate that pick, I'm a little disturbed as to where she found it. I guess if you want to stick with finger-less, maybe something from Fleetwood Mac would be an interesting choice. I've been for some time moving towards playing purely finger based. If you aren't looking to play covers, and don't need to emulate specific sounds, I'd argue that playing with your fingers is more likely to lead to a unique sound and style, and it'll discourage you from doing all the standard pick based cliches. Though, if you really want to go all in, you can pretty much do anything. Andy, who has done pedal demos forever for one web site or another, and who currently seems to have his own (AndyDemos) is a great example of someone who plays finger-style but who can pretty much emulate all of the usual pick based techniques.

    • Love the editing. Super cute and fun. Good video. Your 5 levels videos always inspire me to take on songs I would usually avoid because they are too challenging... I would love to see some kiss songs but I don't know if you could pull 5 levels out of any of em lol.

  • I don´t know what to say. I haven´t learned anything new since years. My guitars hanging on the wall, a constant reminder of what I wanted sometime in my past but stopped doing, and never really understood why. And this song has been on my learning list always. And your video, just so well done, made pick up my guitar today and I practiced for like 30 minutes. And for the first time since years it was fun. You did this. I don´t know how, but you did this. Thank you.

    • Keep playing! I try to tell myself that when the stresses of everyday life takes the better of me, cos when you're playing and enjoying it, that's when you feel great. Either trying playing something that you never really put your mind into gripping fully before, or just playing something easy and sing to it for the first time. Can be equally satisfying. Life doesn't last forever and just to be able and have the skill to play the guitar is a blessing one should cherish.

  • Even after playing this song live for almost 20 years, this video was an informative delight, and beautifully explained. I'm surprised you didn't do the "twiddly bit at the end," as Mark describes it, since it's the most iconic signature lick of the whole song-but then again, every guitarist at Level 5 (me included) already knows how to do it. The wonderful filler licks you break down at 10:04 and 10:59 are the ones people forget, and they're the ones I never really figured out until I saw you nail them so precisely here. Thanks for taking the time to share your insights and beautiful playing. Putting aside all the "levels," I don't think there's any level of skill at which people would stop learning from you. If anything, the better they are, the more your teaching has to offer.

Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite artists, and this is one of my favorite songs. I've known how to play the chord progression for years, but I've never looked into adding the licks and fills that really give the song personality. This video breaks down some of the more recognizable passages and does so in a way that seems very accessible. I can't wait to try this out! You've got a new subscriber here. • Mark is like John Mayer. He makes me depressed when I attempt to really dig deep into his playing. No one can sound like Mark.

  • The fact that you have all your clothes on and let your talent do the talking is very respectful to me. I won’t subscribe to some channels because people think they have to show skin to get subs.
