Thank you for your service First Lieutenant Joe Dart
I'm glad some organization is conserving the endangered Vulfs
You guys are no strangers to paying homage to the greats, so I propose a new track inspired by Deodato's "Tahiti Hut." I know you've got the chops to give it that signature Vulfpeck spin while keeping the essence of Deodato's masterpiece. Imagine the irresistible blend of your tight rhythm section, punchy horns, and infectious melodies with tropical vibes. It's a match made in funk heaven. So, what do you say? Can we look forward to a Vulfpeck x Deodato-inspired jam? I have no doubt that you'll knock it out of the park and leave us all dancing in our living rooms. Keep on groovin'.
Dean Town is nuts. I might have to check your course out now
Wiil Smith briging back "slap in general" killed me lmao 😂😂
that moment needed laugh track sample imho
that sounded natural 😂
Okay I'm glad that didn't get overlooked LMAO!
I LOL'ed a full 2 seconds before Jack.
Lol that’s so good bro
Joe doesn’t hold his bass - it waits for him.
Speaking of which, what's that bass stand called? And where could I find one.
It might be a modified mic stand they have for famous flyers
@@albaal7035 That's not a bass stand - it's a pole that keeps the floor down. Otherwise the ground would get too high
Ya. It seems to float in the air
I saw one kinda like that used by quite famous polish bassist Mirosław Stępień - he told me one time about this stand (used for fretless when he played in one song on bass and... accordion) was... a percusion stand and this fretless (any Wiesław Długosz 5string) has threaded hole in body... just maybe the most solid bass-stand in the world 😅
Wow I had no idea Joe played bass
Anyone can play bass. 😂
@@The_Funky_Horn of course they can with the new Joe Dart Teaches Slap Bass course!
Are you fakkin kidding me, mate? He's so good at it. All he needs now is a band.
i mean i think i'm one of the few persons who knew he plays bass, but i didn't know he speaks
@@The_Funky_Hornwhat?
“Chad was always light on the drums”
Yeah light on drums the way rick james was light on the coke
"Dainty"
I love how Jack is the biggest cheerleader of all hia bandmates.
All he wants to do is show off
Thats quality leadership right there;)
@@McDoinky i would show off joe dart if he was in my band too bro what
In his own words he is the number one number two guy.
Jack is the man, every single time he interjected with a question, the following explanation from Joe shed a ton of light on what was going on. What an absolute legend!
he's the biggest cheerleader for his bandmates
I actually think Jack's slap tone is better than Joe's!
I know we're all here for the free Joe Dart groove lessons, but I gotta say, seeing Jack get so locked in with what Joe is saying and playing makes me realize how seriously Jack takes learning music/respects Joe as a bass player (ofc). Love to see that side of him.
Every musician... - and any human wanting to claim himself as musican - should think like this about other bandmates... Music band should be - a complex and beautifull hebrew word - „EHAD”, „ONE”, united (not exactly means „uniformited”), being interested, communicative and understandable about each other. This is an essence of bandview of many world-famous musicians and bassists :)
...OR... He's trying to sell a Vulfpeck educational course... BUT, I like your reasoning better!! :)👍
@@WillyFranklinOnBass normally I’m inclined to agree, but when I think about Jack selling something, it’s always couched in so much irony and meme material - “No more government subsidies for active basses!” is prime Stratton marketing, but this Jack feels like the genuine music maker and not the figurehead of Vulf. Joe, on the other hand, totally has his marketing cardigan on though (in the best way!).
I'm not a bass player. But I tell you...if Jack Stratton brought out a 7 part series on how he mixes...I'd fork over $250 no worries.
@@Asp0321 I really did their stuff!! Very cool!! :)
The sly “Will Smith brought back slap in general” quip was gold
I never knew the bass floats like that. Freaking cool.
If I spend $3,000 on a Music Man Joe Dart bass, that fucker better float!
it comes with many hours of practice on the joe dart bass
@@jj_verona every bass will be able to do this once there no more government subsidies for active basses
The bass can do anything Joe commands it to do.
That's what the pickups are for
dont forget neck movement back and forth is also important in learning Joe Dart bass technique 🙂
*Fig. 1a:* -->😗 😗
Full Quagmire
The drummer from Vulf Conservatory is pretty good. You guys should consider hiring him full-time for the band.
Where was this fifteen years ago when I needed it the most? New musicians are so lucky.
Agreed
This is no excuse 😂
@@digitalrudimentor no I had to self teach myself because I lived in a rural area. All I could do as a teen was beg my dad to take me to the music store and hopefully get to ask a bass player how he's playing like that. Aside from that we only had books and pictures online. The point is musicians now have a place like youtube to learn and grow from instead of having to travel to the nearest city hoping to learn from some strangers in a Baileys Bros. To make a negative comment says a lot about yourself. Musicians should be positive and curious. Not cynical and bitter.
@@moustachio334 I never could afford instruments even tho I knew music was what I loved. I'm 30 and finally able afford things that make me happy and the first thing I did was buy a truck, the second was buying a bass and buying lessons online. I feel fortunate to have started at a time where so many resources are available but it hurts to know at my age there are tons of guys with decades of experience playing music.
@@annihilation777 don't feel bad because it's in the bass inside that counts
Waiting for the section on “Groove Related Neck Injuries”
I do appreciate the love shown to Victor--the man's influence cannot be overstated!
Jack and Joe have been playing together for so long but Joe still impresses the fuck out of Jack
The idea of Will Smith bring back slap bass in the modern context is hilarious
From what it looks like on the website, there could be more courses coming soon! I'm excited to see Woody teach jazz piano, Jack teach mixing, and Theo teach songwriting.
wow I'd be interested in those!
I mean, while I appreciate the talk and the look at Joe's bass playing, this is less of a "lesson" and more of a "look at me jam and fuck around and be better at bass than you'll ever be" while kind of saying, "you can learn this too, look up Marcus Miller/Wooten/all these other great bassists and then practice." Not helpful.
I think it’s more of a lecture than a tutorial. Useful in the right context.
@@felleroerdere3351 This is just a small excerpt from the course, so take it with a grain of salt. This is also not intended for anyone new to bass playing, which is why it's a "300 level" course. I find this kind of lecture very helpful, it's not just "look at me".
Welp, my theories have been confirmed
I get that this is supposed to be a lecture-type video, but I would really have liked to see close-ups of the techniques, and it might be better to have two or three cameras cutting back and forth between bassist and drummer? Thanks for putting this out there though for aspiring bassists!
Yeah, great content but leaving the camera on a tripod for a super wide shot ain't it.
great first round. i think the buddy commentary works. for the second edition, would be good to incorporate that second camera with the hand close-ups. filling in with the verbal descriptions is good, but even cutting to a blurry vulfpeck extreme closeup would be more helpful.
Agreed.
7:30 - "time spend... slapping" (...) "when I was in the highschool it was all that I wanted to do", precious, indeed
That was completely wonderful thank you Joe , Jack and the Vulf Crew your all awesome =)
I was learning the Cory wong bassfill, and the the vid dropped lol. Love you Joe you inspired me to start playing bass. Love from Denmark.
How far did you get with it? This is an excellent lesson kzhead.info/sun/qLuqgcari4R3ooU/bejne.html
@@joninawhitecoat that is the exact lesson I use. I've gotten so far that I can play it slowly
@@kesse_1204 Same here, It's a challenge that one. All the best.
Oh my god I thought it was just a sick bass lesson series but it's Joe and Jack riffing the entire way? Just bought it.
$250....
This isn't a course, its two awesome dudes having fun playing and talking about bass. Either way I'm here for it.
Well people are paying for it, so hopefully the full version feels like a course.
It’s like this for seven modules. Still cool, but more like a hang than a course.
Shoutout to Chuck Rainey's use of the partition, another element along with Bernard Purdie's robust resume that made the Aja album a success
I'm so stoked for this!!
Louis Johnson deserves a shout out here
Thanks for making this single shot, no edits. 👍
Epic. So fun and light hearted. Love these dudes. Come to Virginia. Thanks 😎
I'm a huge fan of "Time Spent Slapping" by Joe Dart. Thanks Joe!
I love how musicians inspire musicians. Flea inspired Joe. John inspires me. Joe inspires us all. Its magical
Great stuff. Hoping they consider shooting some close ups in the future. The wide shot with the empty podium in full view is great, but yeah, some variety would be nice.
For sure. That is what students NEED in instructional videos. I am surprised that they don't have it in these.
My thoughts exactly, I wanna zoom in and see this in high def slo mo
@@AIP404 Yes, I see that now, and glad that they posted this video to help us see what the content is like.
Love you so much Joe, a greatest inspiration to all the bassman's in the world
Ok! I was skeptical at first but take my money Joe! This is 🔥
This was the first thing I saw from Vulfpeck. I took up Bass right after and got to meet Joe at the Olllam last year :)
it's mesmerizing to watch Joe slap for this long
Those quick hammer-ons are sooo cool!
I don't play bass - this is just fun to watch
Excellent.
These are all things that just come with time spent slapping. Hahaha understatement of the year. Joe you are a funk god, thanks for this video.
so glad you shouted out peg, i love stealy dan
great stuff. Joe is a badass for sure. All you guys in Vulf are pretty damn awesome IMHO. Keep it up you amazing music nerds!! (and I mean that in the best possible way)
This is great, to see them unedited.
jack looookin fly AF. Joe lookin good ofc. Like the flatwounds on the Joe Dart 2 bass.
I don't think i've heard Flea do the doodly doodly haha. Good lesson, loved it, and that Jack was asking questions.
Ghost notes are EVERYTHING when slapping.
i like to do double thumb and the rebound of the string. It depends on what feels easier and sounds better in the context for me
I love that bass stand
Joe you're awesome for sharing your knowledge, Jack you're like something better than a muse or Ricky Ricardo.
This is the most aesthetic LOOKING lecture I've ever seen. Sounds good, too.
Gotta love how chill this is.
This is the bass equivalent of how to draw an owl . :)
welp you gotta practice to get good at anything
@@giocoso4576 Wise words .
For the love of god, do more of these videos.
Leaving behind all the jokes, this is PURE GOLD.
It's a fun party trick how jack can go from looking mid 30s to early 20s with some simple hair rearrangement.
Okay, I have never studied music before, and in all my years of playing, I never really intended to take lessons. This small video just changed my mind. Now I wanna enroll in a music school just so I can properly understand all the references thrown around in yours, Joe. Thanks a lot for this!
there was barely any music theory lingo thrown around at all. how many years have you played that you never picked up on these terms?
You should defintely use those 250 dollars to have real classes with a teacher that can pinpoint your mistakes and help you. Supporting vulf is cool and all, but if you think a bunch of youtube videos are going to teach you bass you are wrong, even if Joe is an amazing player.
@@LMaia14 I think its the opposite, don't spend any money at all. you can become quite proficient on an instrument just watching free youtube videos and practicing, learning songs, etc. there are even enough free resources to learn actual theory and sight reading if you are motivated enough. considering the OP has apparently never heard of a triplet across multiple years of playing though, I don't think they will be very good at learning regardless of the method of teaching.
This is better than anything I learned in music school. You don’t need it, we have KZhead now
@@auto1nfanticid3 As Victor wrote in his book “I can’t teach you anything. I can only SHOW you.”
ah it's so nice chatting with you guys
Once again, I would listen to this man play bass all day
yup, learned slap on flea and higher ground also walking on down the road and a lot of stuff off of BSSM. Also claypool and my name is mud etc
This guy is on another level, makes it look so easy.
Don’t forget about Paul Turner when he plays “Canned Heat” live in Verona. One of my favorite Slap grooves.
If there ever was a Movie about Boz Scaggs, Joe Dart should play the leading role and using this same outfit , hair and shades.
I thought the same thing.
@@johnmurrensmagicalworldofb7705 Now we start campaign for such a movie. Backed up by Vulfenthal Goldwyn Mayer 21 century movies Inc.
Low low low looooooooooooowwwwwdowwwn
Joe Punches bass playing in the nuts. Awseome bassist!
This is my favorite video ever
God I remember discovering the Somebody elses guy bass line and learning RHCP covers on David Caraccio's youtube channel back in the day. That shit was good times.
FAWKIN' LEGENDARY TUTORIAL FROM THE VULF VAULT! 🎶🐻🙌
Jack being impressed by Joe's playing has to be a big highlight, I love it
Nearly went in to ‘My Name Is Mud’ in the triplets bit 😆. My slap style has evolved to be somewhere between Claypool and Squarepusher. It allows you to essentially do a style of ‘picking’ with the thumb and forefinger and do linear runs really cleanly. Well done for getting a WS slap joke in there 😂.
Primus Vulfpeck crossover????
I was thinking Claypool as well.
@@BigStinky69 Yes! ‘My Name Is Dean’ ? 😆
@@DanRyton tommy the cat cover would be sick
Could you imagine what Nate Smith would do with Mud?
okay but Jack just like lovingly gazing at joe and supporting his boi
I love how they always sneak in the chuck Rainey quote 🤣🤣
SKY MALL! the slap in that vulf tune is next level
The color coordination going on here is top notch, welcome to brown town where the sound is as thick as a big brown mound 🎉
"slappin' da base, momma" - paul ruud in I love you man :D
This is very nice 🙏🏾
really digging jacks new hairdo/sideburns, very groovy
Espetacular! Obrigado!
Jack is the ultimate super fan for Joe, he even went so far as to play in his band
thanks Joe.
Hell Yeah, Mr. DART on the EAD&G.
I like seeing the demo. Course looks interesting might get it❤
Enjoy. I went through it over a couple of days to check it out. It very much stays in this format and feels a bit more like and interview with a bass in the room. No closeups or tabs or anything like that. So if you have a good ear and can easily see what’s going on from the angles in this demo, you should get something out of it.
@@alexkidd4144 yeah looks more like a seminar than a lesson
I love this bass holder 😄
We need the Woody Goss school of composition at the Vulf Conservatory plz.
This is very cool & illuminating as well! By the way Stratton's triplet example reminds me a MarKingish approach that he doubles up in his typical flashing & unique slap tecnique.
A moment of appreciation for the Professor Dart fit
Joe, firstly, will there be a Joe Dart Signature Cardigan? Secondly, did you ever come across the Alexis Sklarevsky video from the 80s? a classic! Thanks for the encouragement to not fear the slap!
I like that they have it on a stand.
2023 and this might be the first video on youtube where the dialogue isn't mixed 9000db louder than the music THANK YOU
I’ve always used the slap pluck pluck for triplets, it’s the only way I learnt. I do the slap hammer on slap pluck for higher ground. Man I’m rusty as hell these days though. All that aside, I’m loving the cardigan Joe.
Les Claypool uses the hammer on technique Jack mentioned a lot. Look at him play my name is mud live.
Also American Life
Yeah!!!! Thanks for the slap Will !!!
Jack's Bill O'Reilly reference at 10:18 Really cracks me up "We'll do it Live!"
Man that partition reference got me chucklin, sounds like we've all been swimming in the same steely Dan KZhead algorithm soup
Joe is a national treasure.
I never was a very prolific slap bass player. I've even started using a pick occasionally, which I'd have considered almost a heresy a few years ago. Nowadays I play slap bass very rarely, but when I do, it's more effective.
This is a fun video. There were some good slap moments in 80s pop. Duran Duran has a few songs with a bit of it. Tears For Fears has a slap solo on "Shout."
I dig the single take
Chuck throwin' up that partition. Those who know, know.
Donald and Walter found out.
The Bass really goes but i just keep getting distracted by all the volume knobs
The slap hammer-on sound being personified around 7:30 is more Les Claypool than Victor
