00:00 Introduction
Here at the Gentleman’s Gazette, we’re in favor of any idea that reignites men’s interest in fine menswear. Suits are rarely required these days, but now they are provenance of men who WANT to wear them.
Several new brands have appeared in the last two decades to cater to this growing group of men, so today we’re going to take a look at Suitsupply.
01:07 History of Suitsupply
What Does Suitsupply Offer?
Suit Supply offers a range of suits, separates, shirts, knitwear, overcoats, luggage, and accessories, but suiting is (appropriately for the brand’s name) the core of what they do. That being said, Suit Supply’s mantra is “don’t fit in, find your own perfect fit.”
04:00 OTR (Off-the-Rack) Suits
04:27 Custom (Limited)
04:53 MTM (Made to Measure)
07:23 Suitsupply Construction
Overall, Raphael found that the workmanship level on Suitsupply suits is very high for an off the rack garment. All the seams are straight, everything is thought through, and it’s a nicely sewn jacket. Unlike many traditional brands in this price range, Suitsupply suits don’t feel stiff, and the fabrics are nice brand names, and they also feel good.

Our Suitsupply Experience and Verdict on Their Suits
11:54 Raphael’s Review
16:35 Preston’s Review
29:18 Is a suit from Suitsupply worth it?
Preston:
Not at this time. Neither of us would have been even remotely satisfied with a true off-the-rack suit ordered sight unseen online as neither of us has body types that fit into Suitsupply’s idealized mold.
Raphael:
Well, they have their fit guarantee for their custom program, and even when something comes from the factory already adjusted, and it still doesn’t fit you, they’ll alter it in store for free or included.
We wanted to film a video to get the full experience, and we did get that, so it was okay in my mind paying for that.
In general, I think it’s nice to have a large network of stores so you can actually see the things in person. Competitive brands in that price range are probably something like Spier & Mackay.

  • I'm from the Netherlands: and so is Suit Supply. The "Jort" line is named after and inspired by Jort Kelder; who is a well known journalist: presenter of historical programs and etiquette authority in the Netherlands. He's credited with bringing the Italian sartorial tradition to the Netherlands in the late 1990's (which beforehand relied heavily on the German school of tailoring). This explains the lack of canvas and shoulder dimples of the Jort line.

    @TJCleyn@TJCleyn Жыл бұрын
  • Really appreciate this review! I'm not sure that it's entirely fair to say that SuitSupply isn't worth it overall. Both Raphael and Preston seem to have body types that are a more difficult fit regardless of the store. I have 2 suits from SuitSupply, and I think that they're totally worth it with the in-store alterations; however, I totally see how they might not be worth it for anyone who can't get a good-enough fit. Still love the review and keep up the great work!

    @PhilmFreak@PhilmFreak3 жыл бұрын
    • This video is just bad. Suit Supply offers "Custom Made" to match every body type and has a lot of value for the price. There is no comparable brand which offers the same quality in the same pricing range.

      @LiquidIEx@LiquidIEx2 жыл бұрын
    • @@LiquidIEx No it is a good video - They are an EXTREMELY knowledgeable client and that is not the demo of SS. Most people that shop from SS don't know anything about suits and are recent graduates looking for something different from men's warehouse. I was the number 2 seller in the world at SS and handled the MTM in Soho NY. If they came in when I worked there I would have been the one to work with them, as I was the most knowledgeable but I truly would have turned them away because I know I wouldn't have been able to live up to their expectations. HOWEVER, since SS is so big some sales associates would have just made the sale walked away because the thing they get wrong in the video is they can not return the suit once it is altered. Great video though and respect them.

    • Where would you have referred them to?

      @sayoshinakamario@sayoshinakamario2 жыл бұрын
    • @@DennisxDaring Excellent point - our gentlemen hosts are not the market segment this enterprise aims for. It seems to me rather aimed at the man who'd otherwise buy an altogether actually "cheap" OTR suit at a Big Box store, to ease him into something more customized and more stylish with better material.

      @chedelirio6984@chedelirio6984 Жыл бұрын
    • Good comment Philip about one thing I enjoy with our hosts -- the various gentlemen are not "model" types and that, first, reminds us we do not need to be models to look good, and second, brings up any limitations of the product line styles and fit. TBF this type of business model just cannot function providing a continuum of every possible conceivable variation -- Suitsupply apparently does quite well for the vast majority of people but outliers are, well, outliers.

  • I worked in mens wear and the collar pleat is a removal option for when a guys shoulder blades are protruding from his back so much that it bunches the fabric between his shoulders making it look like he has pleats under his collar. You remove fabric down the center seam but dont touch the collar to flatten the back. Good for football players and body builders.

  • Suitsupply definitely caters to a specific build with their "off the rack" offerings. I'm 5'9 165lbs with a slim but athletic build and have been extremely hit or miss with their different suit cuts. Generally, it seems that their suits(any cut) fit best for men with broad shoulders, a slim waist, and long arms. However, after purchasing a suit using their MTM process, I found the fit to be much better.

  • Raphael, I really like your content. This video is the first video of yours I don't really agree with. In my opinion, Suitsupply is a truly outstanding brand even in comparison to traditional brands like Burberry. I have blazers from both brands and really like the Suitsupply one as much, or maybe even more than the one from Burberry. I see your argument with the fit issues, and I also see that I can't really relate to that, because I have a more slim and athletic figure. On the other hand I thing that for many men, suitsupply is a great brand overall. Update: Just tested Zegna blazer and while the fit was a little better on me, the fabric of the Suitsupply is a little better in my opinion. I would probably give a slight notch to the Zegna jacket, but I still do enjoy the Suitsupply blazer.

I wouldn't buy a suit with such a bad collar gap, not for that amount of money. I am mystified how modern jackets never seem to fit well in the collar. I have 10-15 years old inexpensive jackets that show ZERO collar gap when I move, even to fairly extreme positions. I guess it has to be with sleeve and back fullness, as you say.

  • So I just received a second hand Havana style Suit Supply navy blazer and I have to admit I kind of love it. It’s half lined with a tight summer weave and though the fit may not be 100% perfect it’s still really good. I’m 5’2” and 130-135 lbs and the 36S jacket is very spot on. For $80 it was hard to go wrong.

  • Preston, thanks for this. I am a similar build to you (175cm and roughly 59kg) and take 36-38 jacket with 28-30 waist. So, I have some of the same issues as you, particularly with the big drop and excess fabric. I prefer my suits to fit slimmer because anything regular cut usually looks like I’m wearing a tent. It’s nice to see a guy of a similar physique to me and with similar issues! It’s not just me. I guess it proves men, as well as women, come in all shapes and sizes!

You are my newly discovered KZhead favorites. And now, as summer ends, you've encouraged me to shop and check out your clothing store and accessories. Many thanks and belated Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary. Very sorry I missed at the time, but just now discovering your channel long after the event.

  • I’ve done both S+Ms and SSs made to measure programs. I ended up returning my SS and got another from S+M. I don’t have any experience with bespoke but for the few brands I’ve tried MTM, S+M has been the best by far. I haven’t gotten anything besides OTR since Tim left but I also love their OTR stuff. I have a tobacco linen suit, full canvas double breasted navy blazer in VBC hopsack with brass buttons and a full canvas Harris tweed sport coat from them. The only thing I regret is not getting the tweed coat longer as the fabric is spongy which makes it a bit shorter than my others.

  • I have been a suit supply customer for 8 years. I work in the city of London and rotate between 3 suits a week. I can testify the quality, style, service, and price for London standards are extremely good. They set the bar for an "off the peg" suit shop to have an in house taylor. The quality of the material is superior and if you take proper care will last you long. I have wide shoulders and a big build, I disagree about the euro slim fit thing. The cut of their suits cater for a broad audience. I would recommend suit supply to anyone.

  • Definitely want a GG take on Spier and Mackay, seen quite a few others promoting them. You've helped me make up my mind on SS vs Peter Manning for my next suit, thanks! BTW I own that exact pair of Fort Belvedere socks that Preston's wearing. A year out, and they're still the best dress socks I've ever owned.

  • I worked at Suitsupply, the collar pleat is the pleat that may show itself below the colar of your jacket. Sometimes the ipad calls it 'square back neck' as well. It's pretty embarrassing that no one in the store knew it!

  • Firstly I loved the video - particular shout outs to the editing and Raphael's outfit breakdown. I've shopped with Suit Supply before (three off-the-racksuits, one pair of chinos, one pair smart wool trousers). Here are my thoughts: Suits: As you guys eluded to, Suit Supply only cater to a particular body type. Fortunately, I fit that mold (or at least did pre pandemic!). So the fit was great with only trouser length and tapering adjustments needed. I found the quality of the suit to be really good. Much better than TM Lewin or Charles Tyrwhitt where I used to shop before. I liked the in-store tailoring element. I found it odd that you couldn't mix and match trousers and jackets sizes like you can at other stores. Smart trousers: Great, no complaints. Fit with no adjustments needed. Chinos: Fit was fine but quality was really poor. Fabric felt plasticy and lots of threads coming loose after a few wears. So my personal review is mixed. If you fit their body profile then I think the suits are good quality for the price. But that's a big if! BD

  • Thank you, gentlemen, for this in-depth review of suit supply. Living in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, I am fortunate enough to live close to a location in Canada. Also, I'm lucky enough to have the body type that works with OTR garments. But, after watching your video, and trusting your experience, I am still leaning toward an Oliver Wicks MTM suit. 🙂

  • Great review and I love your guys' work! I think one of the things that you didn't address is that stores like Suitsupply cater to people that... maybe have suit shopping anxiety. It clearly takes a lot of time and experience to know how to suit to the level that you guys do, and I suspect that there are a lot of men that want to look modern and good in a suit, but would really appreciate an "expert" working on their fit with them that can stand around and tell them the most important things they'll need to know. No fit will match something that's made for and tailored just for you, and I suspect we're still years or decades away from having anything that can have mix-and-match agnosticism on a level where every fabric can be used with every option. But, custom suiting requires more money and knowing a lot more about suiting. Similarly, buying off the rack in a department store or Men's Warehouse or whatever probably doesn't match the level of options and fit that something like Suitsupply and its competitors aim for. So all the businesses like Suitsupply that have sprung up in the last few years fills a niche that I think is very beneficial for a lot of people. For me, it breaks down like this: Thrift Stores: When cost is the main concern (can apply to those that also need to purchase multiple suits) Off-the-Rack: Want more options than thrifting, and probably more modern looks for cheaper than custom fitting (should still have alterations done) Options-to-Fit (which is what I'm calling businesses like Suitsupply): Willing to pay more for better options and a better fit, but is unconcerned or not interested in investing time in learning hwo to suit perfectly or maybe doesn't want to spend more money for bespoke suiting. Custom Suiting: This is where you want to be if you "want to get it perfect," or if you have a job that depends on looking as good as possible (e.g. a lawyer, actor, executive, etc.)
