To celebrate Closer To Truth's partnership with this year's HowtheLightGetsIn Hay festival, CTT host Robert Lawrence Kuhn and IAI founder Hilary Lawson sat down for a conversation to explore the festival's theme of "Dangers, Desires, and Destiny". In this conversation, they discuss nationalism, tribalism, artificial intelligence, social media, consciousness, and answer questions submitted by viewers.
Hilary Lawson is a philosopher and award-winning broadcaster who founded@TheInstituteOfArtAndIdeas to bring philosophy and intellectual ideas into public discourse. He is also the Editorial Director of HowTheLightGetsIn, the world's largest ideas and music festival. The next festival takes place in Hay-on-Wye from the 24-27 May. The event will convene world-leading thinkers and award winners including Roger Penrose, Tim Maudlin, Lisa Randall, Peter Singer, and Donald Hoffman. A remedy to online echo-chambers, the festival unites speakers across disciplines to chart tangible solutions to the crises of our era.
As long-standing partners of the festival, Closer to Truth is offering an exclusive 30% off festival tickets with code CTT30. Check out the full program and get your discounted tickets here: shorturl.at/drxN8

  • One month before i had commented that AI is marketing hype and there cannot be artificial intelligence. Intelligence is always live . I feel so happy that Hilary lawson too expresed the very similar views. After watching Hilary speaking so clearly , i can very well say that both Robert Lawrence and Hilary Lawson are greatest personalities of scientific intelligence.

  • A practical minded guest. Simple answer, "NO," AI will not become conscious. If you keep having guests like this, you most likely will come closer to truth.

    • The persons who set an avatar with their selfies and use their real names are never the ones who speak from the heart and are far more concerned with their repute than the truth. I question why you want to see my face and know of my existential name. Do you also want to know about my story, what I fight for, and how the government has stalking programs to track people like me? I bet you don't even care, nor would you ever confront any form of governmental corruption. Psy ops, stalking, mk ultra, is happening worldwide. And here you are, clueless about life in every way, wanting to see my face and know my name.

    • I think anonymity is an important aspect of privacy. People should feel free to express their opinions without fear of retribution.

  • Nationalism exploits tribal instincts. But nation is a very bad approximation of a tribe. In our species individuals tended to gather in groups where everybody knew everybody. Maybe that is where we should return.

  • Great point about the origins of nationalism. Equally dangerous is the human desire to accumulate wealth in whatever form it may be. Hunter gatherers are unlikely to have been able to indulged in much wealth accumulation but with the start of agriculture and sedantarism , wealth accumulation seems to have grown exponentially ever since. Nowdays, we claim that money is the root of evil and it most certainly looks this way. Capitalism has probably peaked and we are all in a very dangerous world because money has been left to rule like a dictator.

    • I heard a lot of negativity against wealth accumulation, but never heard any logical explanation of why it's bad or even how could you do without it. Somebody has to control the economy, somebody has to decide how to build new factories and expand production. You can't do it without somebody taking control over portion of the economy. Money is a tool of exchange between members of production, saying that money is the root of evil is like saying that production, or work or the economy itself is the root of evil. You could remove money and propose a different way of exchange, but it will be basically a different tool to achieve the same result.

  • Consciousness came into existence through a wave function based on the universe and many different vibrating particles compressing time. Awareness emerged from consciousness by combining vibrating energy coming from inside each particle quantum space. For example quantum space is like a second backup generator which is similar to space the bigger generator they are living within. My point is. It's all about vibrating particles and how each of them have space that moves around energy on a plunk level through vibrations and at the same time this quantum space keeps the particle body line up with the universe wave function which is very important for shaping them into many different intelligent entities. I think intelligent robots are gaining awareness every time they improve because on a microscopic and quantum level robots consists of particles with quantum space which is also lined up with the universe wave function.

  • You cannot build a supercomputer like human brain . The human brain is about Three pounds. Supercomputer weights thousands of pounds and supercomputer needs about 200 degrees below normal. Human brain needs around 97 degrees. How can supercomputer get cool down to about 97 degrees?

  • nationalism? tribalism? "Are we taking the common word 'fatherland' for such a grave cause that one people seeks to annihilate the other?" -Erasmus (1517) Ernest Gellner's "Nations and Nationalism" (1983) identifies Nationalism as a medieval development far from tribalism, subsequntly E. J. Hobsbawm (1990), Colin Kidd (1999) and John E Joseph (2004) seem to confirm
